Beer with syrup is very common in Berlin (called "Berliner Weiße", either green with woodruff syrup or red with raspberry) and there is good reason to have it this way as the beer they are using for this is otherwise undrinkable.

Also, I don't want to be that person, but...Foie Gras is a product of animal cruelty and the EU has been trying hard to ban it for that reason. The French got around it by declaring it a cultural world heritage thing :(

Yep, the EU will get rid of all regional specialties…that’s the plan. No more meat for anyone, either. That’s cruel too, after all. Where does it end? Well, it’s not cruel to force inject people with poison against their will, clearly. The humans will be enslaved….and the geese will rule over us. Sounds like a plan.

For hundreds of years there has been a dispute about which side the border region should belong to.
But today, where the borders remain untouched, the rich culture of the border regions is evident.
Today, the border regions connect more than they separate.

French-German viewer here :) I'm glad you liked Colmar, what makes France so interesting is the diversity of its regional cultures (architecture, languages etc) Sadly it's also what has been silenced by the central authorities for centuries. Even now, France is still being condemned by European courts for not promoting regional languages (most of them are sadly dying out). Anyway, nice video as always !

@@MyMerryMessyGermanLife The Amish language is mainly a Palatine dialect, because the majority came from the Palatinate. But also many Alsatians (which is south of the Palatinate) were among them, because both states (the Palatinate belonged to Bavaria) and France were Catholic and they could not practice their faith properly.
By the way, many non-religious emigrants also came from this area (also from Switzerland), so that in Pennsylvania and in East Texas mainly this dialect was spoken.

I was in Colmar back in 1983. We went into some restaurant and the people at the next table ordered "choucroute", the Alsasian variation of a German "Sauerkrautplatte". Well, I had seen it on the menu but I had not travelled all the way from the Baltic coast to France to eat a more or less archtypical German dish. Then it was brought to their table. It was a mountain of pickled cabbage buried under an avalanche of smoked sausages and smoked pork. The smell was much finer than the one that I had grown up with. And then the amount of it! I got the impression that Alsatian cousine must be a mix of French refinement and German overeating. What a happy country 🙂

Side note: Well, in Colmar, like all over the Alsace region, most of the people speak German as well. They speak a German dialect called "Alemannic", which is spoken in Baden-Württemberg (beside Swabian), some parts in Austria and also known as "Swiss German". Guess why Germany is called "Allemagne" in French?
...one evening, after hiking in Alsace, we went to a pub/restaurant in a small village. I was the only guy in our party who can't speak French. So I struggled reading the French menu :-). I was asking the waitress: "Do you speak German?". And she said: "No!". ...so, I ordered the only dish I understood on the menu: Cordon bleu - haha!.
After having dinner, the waitress came back and asked: "Häts g'schmeckt?" (Alemannic for "hat es geschmeckt"? - "Was everything ok/tasty?". So, don't ask in Alsace if they can speak German. Ask them if they can speak Alsatian or Alemannic.
Another example: I was kart driving in Alsace. At a break, I was at the bar at the track. Suddenly the telephone rings: The guy at the bar picked up the telephone and asking us: "Does anyone here speak French?" (No joke! Really!). - Because he was German. Meaning: It's not essential for survival in Alsace to speak French. You can "survive" with German. 🙂
Btw: I have a lot of French working colleges from the Alsace in my company. They say: The older generation speaks German. That's their everyday language. The current generation speaks German as well. But the young generation didn't. The Alsatian dialect is slowly being lost..... Most of them do unterstand German (at least Alsatian), but their everyday language is French. That's what my working colleges are complaining about. Because if their German would be better, they could look for a job in Germany and Switzerland as well. So, there job offers are limited to France.

It's very sad that's there is less and less children who want to learn German at first foreign language and even at second one ! You're obliged to learn 2 foreign language from 6 form to 10, after a small part give up the second language.
I'm from the part of Alsace which stay french, aka Belfort, still close to Germany and closer to the German speaking Swiss. I'm 62 and when I was at school, there was 50% German first foreign language and now you could have secondary school without German at first language ! As second language, Spanish is most choose ! It's really stupid as a lot of people will work in Swiss or Germany !

The problems Germany made for itself when it came to Alsace-Lorraine in the 1871-1918/9 period was based on the fact that it had some 25 German states after the war with Austria that formed the North and the Southern German Federation. The German princes negotiated with each other and the Prussians about their future and finally agreed to unite without giving up too much of their sovereignty while the war against France dragged on in the winter of 1870 to January 1871. Traffic, commerce, roads, railways, armed forces (except for the navy), and even currency(!!) remained issues of the individual states. Only foreign relations, the appointment of the cancellor, command of forces in wartime plus other minor rights and duties fell into the hands of the "Kaiser". Lawmaking like criminal law, civil law, telegraph and mail services came under the legislative power of the all-German parliament in Berlin. All that was carefully put to paper in the new all-German constitution. But then when the war was finally over much later than the Proclamation of the "Reich" on January 18th, 1871, national pride demanded for a last, decisive victory against Louis XIVth (who had been dead for over 150 years) and that meant that Alsace and Lorraine should become German again. Problem #1: The people there did not want that to happen. Problem #2: Alsace and Lorraine had been none of the German states who had decided for that union. They neither were a dukedom or kingdom like Hesse or Bavaria, nor were they a republic like the cities of Hamburg, Bremen and Lübeck. As a consequence they were formed into something called "Reichsland" and they got a government that was appointed above them. They were (mis)treated like a colony.

I would like to remark that "Flammkuchen" is the original Alsatian Word and was translated into French as tarte flambée. You might not have noticed it but the Alsatian dialect is a German dialect and the main reason that many young people do not speak it anymore is because it was not allowed in school to use it so over time it faded away, although in the country side it is still spoken to some extent.

the older folks in rather rural area speak this German dialects and they do it with a typical Allemanic /Alsatian accent. The younger folks often can speak German, too - but they often do it with a French accent. That shows that the younger generations don't speak Alsatian at home anymore, but rather learn German in school as a foreign language.

I love "L'Alsace" for more than one reason. First and foremost I had my very first paragliding experience there, a tandem flight (at a mountain called "Ballon d'Alsace, for US distance standards very close to the spring of Mosel River.)
Secondly, I spent the 16 best years of my life in Freiburg /Brsg. and from there I made many trips to Alsace. And last but not least, some of my ancestors come from there and from Lorraine Region. I really enjoyed the enthusiasm with wich your boys explore castles, and I caught myself murmuring some answers to what they said as if I had been with you 😉

I have been to Colmar for a short trip and now I want to go back. Your videos are truly inspiring.
About the fountains, they have probably been turned off for the season. If the water freezes in winter, they could be damaged. (At least this happens to fountains in Germany).
The dough for the tarte flambée is different from the pizza dough, as you don't use yeast to make it. That is why it is crispier.
    Have a nice Sunday.

Hi Sara, as mostly on Sunday morning, also today, I watched your new video. Totally relaxed but also curious and interested in your holiday trip and your experiencies, made in Colmar. And as always, your video was great and I appreciate your wonderful clips.
But today, I had a special moment (which I never had before in this way), while watching your videos: Feeling or coming out deep of my mind, at minute 30:00 , I became aware, how suitable or matching (which is the right term?) your background music is to your pictures/video. That`s great and that`s fantastic 👍.

Whenever our two sons (then ages ten and twelve) had a school holiday we would vacation throughout Europe. On one of the All Saints Day breaks we traveled to Alsace, which is the perfect time to visit this beautiful region. (The vineyard’s leaves are changing color, and yet the amazing flower boxes are still in bloom.) Just like the McFalls we also visited Haut Koenigsberg. Our boys could not believe the long, long drive up to the top of the mountain and of course loved every minute of exploring such a fabulous castle!❤

Alt-Schuss or Altbier-Schuss is an Alt beer mixed with malt beer, depending on the region. Alt-Schuss is a refreshing summer drink and the dark sister of Alster (short for Alsterwasser) or Radler.
or: Altbier punch /Altbier-Bowle. The Altbier-Bowle was invented in and around Düsseldorf. Fruits such as peaches or strawberries with a little fruit juice are filled with Altbier and result in a punch with a piquant taste.
    Or Altbier with raspberry syrup.
You should try this if they like beer with syrup

Super interesting to see where you go as a family, very impressive and even nicer is that you also try the respective local cuisine and that completely unbiased. And of course France is a true culinary paradise. So far I've been able to visit Paris and the coast in the northwest, unfortunately this part isn't there yet, but unfortunately I haven't made it to Freiburg either. I hope it works out in the years to come. The history in Europe is just very long, with many twists and turns in terms of territorial claims, hence the very rarely straight borders with some curiosities where borders then run through a house. Another nice highlight of your video. Warm greetings!!

A very rare privilege when you look at the world's children & their families. I hope that you do ensure that your lovely children know that such a home, such comforts & fun are special & not the norm, even in North America, not just so called 3rd world, from where we get most of the minerals which drive our modern world & create great suffering to people there for our benefits. Just look at Chile for instance & the mines devastating their land. Even greedy behaviors like washing clothing after only a single wearing is criminal against the groundwater system that prevents others from even drinking water.

As I understand it, overhanging was not only for tax evasion. At that time, wooden beams were used. They may sag under load. The support is at the point of the main wall. If it is not at the end of the beam, then the weight of the first floor masonry bends the beam in the opposite direction than the weight of the furniture in the room. Without this solution, columns would have to be used for larger spans.

Dear family, if you ever return to Alsace, why not visit the small town of Kaysersberg. It is not far from Colmar and its most famous son was Albert Schweitzer, who was born there in 1875. Ludwig Philipp Albert Schweitzer was a Franco-German doctor, Philosopher, Protestant theologian, organist, musicologist and pacifist. He is considered one of the most important thinkers of the 20th century. Schweitzer, the "jungle doctor", founded a hospital in Lambaréné in Gabon in central Africa. In 1953 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 1952, which he received in 1954. The wineries in this area make excellent red and white wines and a cremant that is in no way inferior to champagne but is significantly cheaper.
    Greetings from northern Germany

From what you shared, Colmar is a wonderful town! It was like stepping back in time. I like escargot, too. I had my first taste of them in a long-gone restaurant, "Le Pastis" in White Plains, NY. I was a community college student in the 1970s, and thought, "Snails? Eeewww!" But a fellow student, who had them before, reassured me they are like clams or oysters and are so garlicky good. She was right! I'd like to try flammkuchen, too. I'm impressed with the knowledge, joy and enthusiasm your sons showed at the castle. I really loved touring the castle with you all!
BTW - The French jazz style music reminded me of Django Reinhardt's music. And I also liked the medieval style music for the castle.

He's part of the Alsacian minority, and grew up speaking Elsässisch (Alsacian), which is similar to old german dialect at home. His grandparents spoke Alsacian as their primary langauge but were forbidden from speaking it in school, where they were forced to learn French. If your kids like castles, there is a lot to see in alsace and a lot of great stories that go with the castles. My prefered one are Fleckenstein, Andlau, Ortenau, Holandsbourg, St Ulrich/Rappolstein and Ferette
And for the food, if you visit alsace in the summer and if you go on the top of the Vosges, stop in a ferme auberge and try the "repas marcaire", great meal.
