Hahah Omg. The carving is beautiful too. I’m reading Agony and Ecstasy rn. Apparently, when he was 14 and working on his second marble, the Madonna relief.
Giovanni [Lorenzo’s son] approached Michelangelo in the Medici Garden where he has been just staring at the marble block for months-Some days from sunrise to sundown.
Giovanni invited him to a weekend hunting trip. To which Michelangelo replied; “Forgive me, but as you can see I am in the marble, and I cannot leave off."

I understand this. If one visualizes themselves building something long enough, eventually it's as if you've already done it. I build up custom bicycles. I know it's no real comparison, but when I bring home the project bike to be customized, I set it up where I can look at it for hours, days, months even. By the time I start work on it, I've already considered nearly every decision or answered every problem I may encounter.

      Isn’t it fully restored?

Yes but now it's kept at a safe, wider distance from the audience and there is a bullet proof glass protecting it.
It's good that the statue is safer than ever but it's a shame that it's quite far away so that seeing it isn't the same experience as before.
Seeing statues and painting up close (while still safe from harm) is a magical experience, expecially for art history students like me. I really hate the bastard that harmed this masterpiece, not only did he do an incredible damage but he also indirectly robbed the future generations (like me) of the possibility of having a better view and appreciation of the piece

I don’t think thats true. I think he would have been badly punished if he vandalized it. This was commissioned by a French cardinal in Rome. Cardinal jean de bilhere I believe was his last name.

I know where one of the originals is. It’s not a joke either. You can find me if you search hard enough and I’ll tell you. Alias is trill 👀.

Theologically speaking, this sculpture is blasphemous. It should be Christ holding her, a flawed human, a sinner in need of a savior.

In fact Mother Mary was conceived without sin (famously and theologically agreed upon)

Mother Mary was born without original sin , and in earth is the mother of Jesus. She was in pain and sorrow recieving her son dead .

What is blasphemous about a mother holding the body of her beloved son in grief? Even if she knew that he was the Son of God, he was also her child.
She had loved him and cared for him ever since he was born. Sinless or sinner (depending on your beleifs) she was still his mom and her heart was torn apart when she saw him die in the worst possible way; of course she'd want to hold him close one last time before burying him.
There's nothing wrong with this depiction of Mother Mary, it's both a depiction of motherly love (which is surely not a sin in God's eyes) and a metaphor for the grief of the Passion anticipating the rejoicing of the Easter Sunday (which is a concept every branch of Christianity can agree on I hope)

The translation into English is very pitiful.
