8:31 i too love Armada. I think it's really really good and underrated, and I love the 'shoot first, move second' as that's so different to normal wargames. Plus the capital ships v Fighters is f antastic!

@Babes & Board Games You really think so? I feel that Forbidden Stars is relatively straightforward and elegant, considering the type of game. Combat can be a bit slow but found it quite lean otherwise. Never played Starcraft but have actually heard it being described as a bit bloated and fiddly. Definitely a cool IP though.
@Babes & Board Games Ah, I thought there was a fair bit of difference between the two in terms of the orders and technologies so didn't realise they were so similar. It is a real shame that FFG lost the licence and that the expansion had to be canned. However I think FB is still an excellent game in its own right. The factions are all very varied but still very well-balanced. In terms of the planned expansion I'd love access to new factions, but would be against adding more players. I wouldn't ever want to play over 4 due to excessive downtime. In fact I think 3 is the ideal player count. Maybe it's different for StarCraft though.
@@tabletopcloset8992 The game isn't incomplete at all, that's silly. It just doesn't play up to six. No need to play with that number of players anyway. FS is an amazing game, and one of the best ever.
I love Conquest of Nerath. A couple of house rules we use: (1) You can have unlimited numbers of footmen, but the other units are “locked” to the number that comes with the game. (2) You can take footmen into dungeons with the heroes.
completely agree with your take on Dr. Sleep (unless you are being sarcastic). Saw it in a good theater with amazing sound (heartbeats). Thought the end was a little cheesy but i went in not expecting it to have the Kubrickian slow tormenting feel that I love. having separated it from the shining and judging it on its own i loved it!
I really did enjoy it quite a bit. Kubrick is my favorite filmmaker, so I was skeptical that this would be good. It blew me away. Best SK adaptation since The Shining, IMO.
The Discriminating Gamer yep never been better than Kubrick, Lyndon is rediculous. Most sk adapts are cheesier than chuck e. IT was a train wreck. Talk about the wrong director.
Conquest of Nerath doesn't get enough love. I bought it years ago on a whim as my FLGS had stacks of them overstocked and on sale at massive discount. Was not disappointed in the least.
Great list. Have you played Battletech? One of the venerable sci-fi game systems that has stood the test of time, and it as simple (big, stompy mechs) or as complicated (BSM plus infantry, tanks, hovercraft, ships, aircraft, orbital craft, and tons of environmental rules, which can all be added modularly as you wish). Great stuff.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer It is experiencing a bit of a resurgence currently. They have a great new starter box out (Battletech: A Game of Armored Combat) which might be worth a review. There is also a Kickstarter wrapping up which will see a tremendous amount of new material and great new sculpts of Mechs in a staggered release over the next year or two. I've watched everything you've done, and it seems right up your alley.
Cthulhu Wars has been on my radar since I got back into gaming year-and-a-half ago when I retired. Been adding lots of games to my collection mostly Avalon Hill games that I never got decades ago. Been picking up a few that I sold when I needed money. I have not bought too many brand new war games. Maybe 6 or 7. Mostly Compass Games n a couple of GMT. But mostly I have war games of one type or another. I have picked up wingspan, A.&A.& Zombies, forbidden island and horrified. "Man cannot only live by PZKW IV's." there's a couple on your list then I'm going to have to add to my I think I want list, so Thank You. And if I may input a game, I really like A.H. Amoeba Wars. And as always thank you thank you thank you.
Space Empires the board game is based on the 4X series of computer games and specifically Space Empires 4, as the art is the same for ships and such. I love Space Empires 4 Gold, I've had it for years.
There are similarities of course beyond the art but the PC game is much too complex for a1:1 translation to a board game. It would take forever and the PC game already tends to be super long! I only played the board game once and it didn't take all that long to complete.
Wow I have not played any of these but would really like to. Almost bought your #1. Wish I had. Among other issues I have I like more games than I dislike, so I could never be a reviewer. My list 1) Mage Knight, 2) Earth Reborn (Scenario Auto Generating System & a ton of terrain tiles so the make your own scenairios make you own scenarios are uninitiated), 3) Warhammer 40k: Forbidden Stars ( Only Problem is the due to split of companies no expansions for other factions but still a good game with what is there), 4) Warhammer 40k: Horus Heresy (GMT this game is a Blast), 5) Level 7 (Omega Protocol) (Really unique Mechanic of what you due or don't determines what the Aliens can do) 5) Sky Galleons of Mars ( Love this game which is Wooden Ships & Iron Men set in on Mars in 1889 with Space Ship combat. Love the Theme straight out if Jules Verne). 6) Warhammer 40k: Conquest (GMT LCG love this game I think there are 9 factions that all play differently). 7) Core Worlds, 8) Star Fleet Battles), Battle Tech, 9) Golem Arcana (Like this game becasue it was unique using an App and beautifully painted minis) 10) Summoner Wars Master Set). I know I will get heat for this but I have a few Beer & Pretzel Guilty Pleasure honorable mentions. 1) Battle Beyond Space (A shoot'em up and I have a blast playing it), 2) Battue ( Ever time you play the board can be different. Another game I have a Blast playing), 3) Godzilla: Kaiju World Wars (This game I like due to the fact I loved Godzilla as a Kid. I like the painted minis, the 3d Buildings that once destroyed filp 1 over and its rubble, I like were 2 players have combat by showing defense & offensive cards lining them up for a result unique and you can Nuke the City). I do not want to recommend any of my games people have different taste and a lot of my games have poor reviews. But I enjoy them what can I say.

Somehow area control games dont feel like a war games to me. Maybe i have got so used to tactical miniatures games that area control games dont feel so immersive from the war side.
@@ProfOfHifi Recall wargames cover a range of scales, from tactical to operational and strategic. Tactical wargames are but one subset. Area Control games share some similarities to strategic-level wargames. These appeal to me, in part because of my love for strategic level wargames.
Going to go play Armada this weekend for the third time with my flying Potato and the Profundity. And I will agree, I do have problems turtling in games and so I lost badly at Cthulhu Wars.
There was a time Battlelore second edition was my only fantastical tactical miniatures game. I didnt like how little it got support from FFG and i felt they went on wrong direcgion with the few expansions the game got. So i sold Battlelore 2nd edition. I then backed from Kickstarter 3 games: Mythic Battles: Pantheon, The Edge: Dawnfall and Godtear. Nowadays i have a lot more this type of games. I love them even if the large two player games are difficult for me to get on the table. So i have to give a credit to Battlelore 2nd edition which started that type of game for me.

I don't think I'd classify Starship Samurai, Blood Rage, or Battle Beyond Space as wargames. I realize its a fine line, and we may all have our own criteria, but they feel more Euro-y to me.
Another great list - was really interested in your choices (and asides, like Armada vs. X-Wing). It pains me that Conquest of Nerath, Cthulhu Wars, and Battle of the Five Armies are all available only if you have an arm and a leg to spare. I also loved your term “fantastical” for this list - and was smirking at all of the grumbling I saw about terminology in the comments. I never understand why gamers get so hung up on semantics.
I like the song Sin at the end of the video but cannot find the song on iTunes. There is only one album by Rev Mayhem that I see and Sin is not on it. Does anyone know how I can get that song?

Couple of things.... 1. I Love the Shining! For those who get the movie, it’s one of the best!! 2. Conquest of Narrath. Always wanted this, but no o e to really play with. Wish it was Solo. 3. Got me interested in Cthulhu Wars! 4. I was NOT disturbed while watching the vid 😜

Cthulhu Wars was so weak to me. I love the theme, as I have read all of Lovecraft's work, so I really wanted to play it. This is also my favorite genre of board game, so I was hyped. What a let down. The combat is boring. You spend the whole game just running away because there aren't enough hits on the dice. Build up armies, both roll tons of dice......to have one army just move to the next area. Silly. Chaos in the Old World(#1), Forbidden Stars, War of the Ring, The Battle of Five Armies, Assault of the Giants, Blood Rage, Cyclades, Kemet, and Cry Havoc are all way better games than CW.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer Definitely. There are things I liked about it, just the combat felt very anticlimactic and an afterthought. I love asymmetrical powers, but a few of the other games I listed do that and have way cooler combat systems.
I've got some ideas! I'm actually working with Academy Games right now on a game, but it is a negotiation game. Maybe once that's up and running I can look at other projects.

Curious as to why you are including sci-fi picks in a "fantastical wargames" list. I consider there to be a distinctive difference in what is fantasy vs. Sci-fi
It's "Fantastical" which I use as a catch all for anything that is not "Historical."
Have you tried, "Eclipse"? My favorite 4X space conquest game.

Rick Smith I have. I really enjoy it, but I don’t consider it a wargame. It’s far too Euro, but has elements of Ameritrash.

1. I Love the Shining! For those who get the movie, it’s one of the best!!
2. Conquest of Narrath. Always wanted this, but no o e to really play with. Wish it was Solo.
3. Got me interested in Cthulhu Wars!

Thsts funny i find the civ aspect of ascendancy weak. I find it more od a diplomatic game more than anything else. With combat secondary

Cthulhu Wars was so weak to me. I love the theme, as I have read all of Lovecraft's work, so I really wanted to play it. This is also my favorite genre of board game, so I was hyped. What a let down. The combat is boring. You spend the whole game just running away because there aren't enough hits on the dice. Build up armies, both roll tons of dice......to have one army just move to the next area. Silly. Chaos in the Old World(#1), Forbidden Stars, War of the Ring, The Battle of Five Armies, Assault of the Giants, Blood Rage, Cyclades, Kemet, and Cry Havoc are all way better games than CW.

@@TheDiscriminatingGamer Definitely. There are things I liked about it, just the combat felt very anticlimactic and an afterthought. I love asymmetrical powers, but a few of the other games I listed do that and have way cooler combat systems.

I've got some ideas! I'm actually working with Academy Games right now on a game, but it is a negotiation game. Maybe once that's up and running I can look at other projects.
