A mostly light or tactical list. I've not played or even looked at War Room due to cost! Great to see the list complete, always interesting, thanks.
Thank you. Much appreciated.
Such a great series of videos. Thanks for pulling them together, and for all of your content (Cody Carlson Ph.D. included!).
Thank you very much. That is very kind of you. Much appreciated.
Thanks!
Thank you very much, sir. Most kind!
My middle son joined the Marines in 2012, and over the next four years I anxiety-stress painted Tide of Iron along with lots and lots of other games. I also have everything for ToI. I have 8 of your top 10. Damn fine list if you ask me!🍺🍺
Tide of Iron is great. I don't have the patience to paint it however.... nor the talent.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer
Turns out painting is/was for me, a great stress reliever! I don't have the talent either, but I sure had the stress! Haven't painted a whole lot since 2016 after my son came home from the Marines. 🎗️💝
Tell your son I said Semper Fi dog!
@@rockhopper01
Roger that. I was Air Force (Security Forces) in Desert Shield/Storm, served side by side with Marines at Shaikh Isa Air Base. My son said even though I was an Air Force puke (😯lol), I was good to reply Semper Fi and I will deliver the message!🍺🍺
@@robertmoffitt1336 awesome, small world. I was an avionics tech for A-6E Intruders with VMA(AW)-332 1990-1993. Our sister squadrons from Cherry Point were at Shaikh-Isa, VMA-224 and -533. We did an extended WestPac to Japan and Philippines because they were out of the rotation due to the war.
Great list, Cody. I share many of your favorites. Axis & Allies also started my obsession with WWII. Black Swan is a newer game, but is a great block war game similar to Victory in Europe. War Room is an absolute masterpiece, and is also my favorite all time. Thanks for the video series!
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it.
Cody, nice 50 collection of WWII games. I am from the era of Avalon Hill's early days of war games. The original Axis and Allies was a memorable gateway board gaming hobby introduction game to my friends along with the original Diplomacy that presented a more social hook than the earlier Avalon Hill games. With the growth of GMT, Compass and Worthington Publishing along with many other publishers World War II is now well covered in various levels of detail, scale and game mechanics to meet the wants of any grognard. My collection features hundreds of WWII games... but my top three go to list is: 1). Avalon Hills 80's Card Game Series of "Up Front, Banzai and Desert War" for the thrill of personalized squad level combat... and the first CDG presented in a truly unique design. 2). The "Tide of Iron Series" for the whole package of visual impact, miniatures, card implementation and a mix of strategy and dice rolling luck... pure fun. 3). Worthington's "Struggle For Europe" featuring firm strategy built on a historical time stage along with the simplicity of play creating a fun and quick playing game of tense decisions. So many great WWII board games out there to play with other gamers but so far none have surpassed these three as my all-time favorites.
I haven't played your #1, but the other two are fantastic. If you like TOI, you might want to check out Company of Heroes. Thanks!
I love this list and the video entire series! Congrats on putting this together! Great job!
Thank you very much. Glad you liked it.
Amazing series. So many great titles. Thanks for taking the time to put this together!
Thank you sir, once again, for the great games!
I 2nd Cody, - thanks for the great games. :)
Cody, Being an older grognard, I have not played many of the games in your top 50. Most look to be from this century. Showing my age, my #1 WW2 game of all time is Up Front (and expansions) from Avalon Hill. I think it was way ahead of its time as a card-driven game that is both quick and replayable, had a good element of tension, but suffered from some clunky rules. War Room looks very cool and looks to be a lighter treatment of another favorite of mine: Advanced Third Reich (AH), now under GMT's A World at War. I find myself doing more solitaire gaming these days, at least when it comes to wargames, so I appreciated the solo and solo-compatible games on your list. I have Coral Sea Solitaire (Decision Games) on the way and have picked up Pacific War Solitaire (Worthington Games). Never could get into Axis & Allies -- seemed too game-y and unserious. Having softened over the years, I might dig it now. Keep up the great videos!
@@90rightangle2 Thank you very much. I appreciate your comments. I can see how AA may be too light for some gamers, but it was the game that made me fall in love either way gaming.
Cody, thanks for the fun and informative list of games. I really enjoyed learning what games you love. They were all great. And thanks in general for your channel. I look forward to your videos. I am sorry that we live in a world where you must make a disclaimer telling people to not make nasty comments because they do not like your choices. I wish people could be even a little mature about these things.
Nick Stasnopolis
Thank you, sir. It is what it is, but the fact of the matter is that for every one nasty comment I get, and usually get several dozen that are very positive.
Well, you were absolutely right to refer me to this video from your 4-year-old (previous) video on this. This list just hit me really well. I've been in the market for an A&A game, and I really appreciate the A&A games you listed (and WHY). I am astonished to hear Undaunted Normandy plays best as a 4-player game, which is too cool sounding. (I love 2-player and 4-player team games.) I'll have to do some thinking on the A&A games because the ones you mention appeal equally to me after you explained them, and there's even the North Africa one to consider. Thank you!
@@sojourner650 Happy to help. Glad you enjoyed it.
Great list, with some gems across the top 50. One WW2 game, which is a guilty pleasure of mine since my childhood is Escape from Colditz.
@@stevedebono3309 Thanks. I was less than impressed with Colditz when I played it. But to each their own.
I loved the entire list Cody! I'm going to have to check out your other channel because I have been fascinated with WWII since a child. My father and I used to watch to documentary series "The World at War" which is still incredibly good. It amazes me that after studying that horrific conflict for about 45 years, I still learn new things about a six year war.
Oh, keep the "dad jokes" coming!
Thanks a ton. Like you, I've been studying WWII all my life, and have graduate degrees in it, and I'm constantly learning new things.
frenchie here, bought war room since i saw you talking about it. Absolutely perfect game, miss to play it..thx for the discovery :) / pledged with imperial borders, cant wait it s so brilliant
Thank you! I love War Room and I'm really looking forward to Imperial Borders. I was just in France over the summer. Had a wonderful time. Great country.
I agree with you about the superlative quality of War Room. As for Memoir '44, I have printed the terrain in PLA on my 3D printer. We ran the game at a local con.
Now that sounds like a lot of fun.
A great and varied list. My number 1 is The chase of the Bismarck from Vuca Simulations. A double blind movement game that can run very long. On the downside it isn’t cheap.
@@gavinbateman2203 I’ve heard that one is good. Thanks.
I didn't realize you loved miniatures so much.
I played a lot of miniatures (flats actually) when I was a kid in the '60s, but usually just like old-school counters better. I do love the awesome board presence of the Heroes of Normandie series.
Honestly, I could take or leave the minis. The game is the thing.
Excellent top 50 list!
Thank you. I appreciate it.
Tough job, narrowing a top 10 list. For me, I too would have 'Axis & Allies 1940', 'Memoire 44' and 'War Room' on such a list. My tastes at a top 10 level, however, run more to the likes of 'Advanced European Theatre of Operations', 'Anzio', 'The Dark Summer', 'Nimitz', 'The Dark Valley', the updated 'Fortress Europa', 'Ostkrieg' and 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' (albeit, that last one is the Spanish Civil War, so in lieu of it, one of the other Europa titles). But I've enjoyed following your top 50 list. Thanks for doing what was obviously a lot of work.
Thank you. Much appreciated.
Alright, you have sold me on two with this. I had been waivering on "A&A: Pacific 1940", but that talk of naval battles early and often is all I needed to hear. (That, and that "Undaunted: Reinforcements" adds a team 4-player option, which I didnt know it had.)
Happy to help. Thanks!
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer And thank you for the series! It was much appreciated and well-timed.
Great list!!
Thank you!
I waited until now to make my nasty comment. So here it is!
Thanks for the list. Quite a few titles throughout all 50 that are new to me. WW2 hasn’t been my favorite gaming theme, but I’m looking at Undaunted Battle of Britain for sure.
Memoir 44 was huge with my kids. It was like playing army men with rules and we loved it.
That War Room looks awesome.
Thanks a ton. All of the Undaunted games are great, and Bob is really good. Hope you get a chance to play more of these games.
Thanks, still at an insanely good #7 not bad. Hope you enjoy 2nd edition Company of Heroes! Sooooooon! :)
Thank you! Really looking forward to second edition!
Great list: my list 1. Rise & decline of 3R (AH), 2. Memoir 44 series, 3. Combat Commander series, 4. Undaunted Normandy, 5. Dark Summer, 6. Midway (AH), 7. WWII Commander: battle of bulge., 8. Panzer Leader, 9. AAOC- Malta (AH), 10. Fighting Formations.
Thanks. I haven't played a lot of those, but they sound like fun.
who's this lucky guy Zack who gets all your games :):) thanks for your top 50 -- apreciate the axis and allies on the top 10 so much.
I've known Zac since High School, he's one of my best friends. I'm just bummed that he's in SLC and I'm in Boise. Wish we were closer and could play more games.
I knew it would be with war in it. Hence, war room. hehe. I agree with you, and you share very much the same life on A&A. I was born in 76. A&A was really my first massive game I played back in the 80s. I also am a ww2 fanatic, I wouldn't consider myself a historian because I never received higher education on history, but I have consumed a ton of ww2 content. Axis and Allies always gave that WW2 feel to near perfection. Excellent! Great video, man. I love it!
I was born in '76 too, but my big, formative game was Shogun (AKA Samurai Swords, AKA Ikusa).
Thank you very much. I, too, am a child of the mid-1970s, raised in the 80s. Thanks!
@joshyaks yep Shogun, American Fortress and A&A. lol
Nice list, Cody! The only thing about Tide of Iron that's a shame is that they never got to release anything for the Pacific Theater. Well, that and it's out of print now.
Yeah, some pacific battles would have been fun. I keep hoping someone will pick it up again. Not holding my breath.
Very cool Cody, I really enjoyed hearing about your list. I should try to figure out my top 50 some time. Making lists like this can be a lot of fun I think and as you're looking at your games and thinking about them it can even fire up your interest to pull them out and play them too. I enjoyed watching go over your list as you had some games that I hadn't heard of before but am now very interested in getting them.
One question comes to mind I'd like to ask if I may. You have both Axis & Allies: Europe 1940 and Axis & Allies: Pacific 1940 along with the Axis & Allies: Anniversary edition in the top 10 group of games. The Anniversary edition is a nice, big game that cover the world at war. The 1940 Europe and Pacific games are half of the war each but can be combined into a super-sized edition of Axis & Allies covering the whole war and is even bigger than the Anniversary edition. What is it about the Anniversary edition that you like more than the combined 1940s editions? Thanks!
I haven't played 1940 Global, but honestly it seems like a logistical nightmare combining the games. It may not be, but I just don't want to put up with it. Anniversary is just great out of the box. I like the scenarios, the national objectives, the strategic bombing, and more. Just really like Anniversary.
Great list. My favourites are Company of Heroes, Memoir 44, and of course Axis and Allies. I do have war room and am waiting to get it to the table. I still have my original Axis and Allies game, loath to give it up. I had once entertained thoughts of combining Axis and Allies theatre level with battle level of Memoir 44. The issue of course was the naval battles and how they would be done. At any rate, well done.
Thank you. I really appreciate it. We need a good light but meaty naval battle game, IMHO.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer Just wait for Undaunted: Bismarck ;)
Maybe if the Undaunted crew would take on a 3rd - co-designer lol
Love your channel
Thank you very much. Love your comment.
I have to get caught up on 50-11, so don’t know if you mentioned it in one of those.
But the A&A 1940 Europe & Pacific can be combined to play a Global game. Which is my brother and dad’s favorite way to play. It takes us while to get through and is a table hog, but always worth it. I haven’t played and Memoir ‘44 overlord (though I have played the base), but I imagine it enhances that game like global does for the A&A 1940s sets.
Been meaning to take a deeper look into the Undaunted series, but family doesn’t seem interested, so I find it hard to get (or even researching) games that won’t hit the table in the foreseeable future.
I haven't played the Global 1940 Game, and I fill like Anniversary scratches that itch for me. I hope you get a chance to play Undaunted at some point. They are truly amazing games.
Very interesting and well thought out list. I do not have that many WWII games. However, some of my favorites are (in no particular order) WWII (ETO and PTO) by SPI, Rise and Fall of The Third Reich, Empire of The Rising Sun, and Tide of Iron.

Love this channel and your PhD channel! Would love to be in your inner circle of friends you call for multi player games. Alas, there arent many WW2 board gamers near me. Curious that neither RAF nor Skies Above Britian made your top 50. One is considered a classic, the other is wildly popular and highly rated. Do you not consider the battle of Britian part of the primary worldwide nature of the war? Regardless, thanks for all your work!
I haven't played those games, but you'll recall that Undaunted: Battle of Britain is on the list, so the battle is represented here.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer that's right, it was. My mistake.
Great list Cody and I own 9 of your top 10! Buuuuttttt I was really (REALLY) surprised, that East and West Front from Columbia Games aren't even not within your top 50 (hope i didn't overseen them)! East Front is THE Block game for East Front Panzer pushers! West Front plays very different compared to East Front but I luv it too! Try them out!!!
I haven't played those titles. Maybe one day.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer Change 'Maybe one day' to 'as quickly as possible'! You will thank me!
Loved the top 10 mate. Out of curiosity do you rate using reinforcements with North Africa or does Normandy clearly win out?
O, and re you comment on your other vid of version 1. I was saying version 1 of the Anniversary tournament rules are ready to go. How can I get them to you? :)
I like the reinforcements with North Africa, but much prefer it with Normandy. I replied with the email address.
Quite the list. The gaming world is very different now from what it was in the 70s-80s when I was more involved. I do like to see that the designs are really creative.
I think board gaming in general has made tremendous strides, particularly since the 1990s. Like it or not, I think we gamers owe Catan a great deal in this regard.
Good list!
@@ChristopherEvansJaguarX305 Thanks.
I'm not surprised by the presence of Undaunted series and the A&A family in your final ten.
Gott in himmel, I've got WarRoom still sitting in the bunker after over a year. Can't get the space/time nor the quorum. Driving me blitz crazy.
I really hope you get to play it soon. War Room is just a fantastic experience. I need to get to the table again.
great selection of games Cody. I like all the ones you picked for the same reasons just haven't got to try war room yet
I hope you get to play War Room soon. It is fantastic! Thanks.
An very enjoyable list, glad to have some of the games but also a reminder of the games I have missed out on. But in boardgaming you cant catch em all
Very true. Thanks!

Sweet list man!!! Have to say I have a bunch of these. One game I love, not sure you ever played it, vut lots of fzn is Chase of the Bismarck from Vuca Simulations. But we seem to have a similar taste in games. I have bought a bunch of your reccomendations and you have never given a bad recommendation.
Thank you. I'm happy to have helped and I appreciate your support of the channel. Haven't played Bismarck but now I'm intrigued.
Vuca is a great wg publishing company. Top notch board and components. Chase of the Bismarck was delivered to me today!
@@Socialdogma
I love Bismarck. I don't have enough time these days between work and family activities (11 YO and 9 YO) but I really loved the pace and tension in Bismarck. The fear of the RN arial patrol finding the Germans and the frustration of somehow not finding the Germans as the RN. If you like these games that Cody talks about I promise you will enjoy Bismarck.
I have been very tempted to order a few others from Vuca. Donnerschlag and Traces of Hubris are 2 I am really think of ordering. But you are right, really great quality games from them.
These top 10 list are great. Do it for other subjects. Top 10 pirate games. Top 10 space games. Top 10 Star Wars games and so on.
Like this: ua-cam.com/video/KIt7qfP_Dk8/v-deo.html
Cody, as an Axis & Allies fan have you investigated Global War 1936 (version 4)? The scale of it is staggering - the (vinyl) board comes in three sizes - 3'x6', 4'x8' and 5'x10'. In fact if you search for images of the game on line you'll struggle to find one that does justice to the majesty of the table.
I don't think I've got a table for it. I've heard great things. Maybe somewhere down the line I'll look into it. Thanks.
Can't wait to get my copy of company of heros!
It's a great game! You're gonna love it.
"wife" : congrats !
Danke.
My copy of Undaunted has finally arrived. Hopefully going to have a game next week challenging my mate who thrashed me at A&A. It should be a level playing field seeing we are both new to Undaunted. I also like Undaunted is easy take some where with its manageable size unlike some of my bigger games and fear of losing pieces
Which Undaunted did you get? They are all great, but as the list illustrates, some are better than others.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer I got a deal Battle of Britain and Normandy (the one I plan to play first). I quite like the tiles don't take much space up. I've developed a dislike of oversized boards. My initial thoughts about Undaunted is its a well designed game
As someone who enjoys traditional hex & counter war games, as well as CDGs from the last 20 years, I do think A&A games are great fun! Anniversary is also my favorite. My friends love War Room but I do prefer more traditional A&A. You must have a competitive streak if you prefer A&A 2p! I have also come to that conclusion after getting frustrated with other’s style of play.
I love AA a lot, but War Room feels like the next evolutionary step of AA. I do prefer AA two player, however.
You need to download and read the rules to War of the Ring! Why? It uses a simple hidden movement system that could make A&A Pacific (and War Room) into something amazing.
Maybe there is something there. Thanks!
Best covers? Axis and Allies…. I love Memoir 44 but I always feel it could leave more space for strategy… theres no way to make a plan.
I much prefer the Overlord expansion to vanilla Memoir '44. More strategy in that one for sure.
I agree, it did not settle well with me at all. I would like to try it with the expansion but I traded it very quickly.
To each their own but my #1 would be Squad Leader.
@@ycplum7062 A lot of people like the one. Thanks.
Where did you purshased the sticks to move units on the map ?
War Room had an expansion box that had the staves in them.
Panzer Blitz by Avalon Hill and the original MB Axis & Allies were some of my first WW2 games
I've heard good things about Panzer Blitz. Thanks.
A lot of fun games in your top 50, I'm happy to play most of them. However, with a PhD in military history I'm surprised there aren't many 'traditional ConSims'.
I prefer games to simulations. I understand the utility of ConSims, and how important they are in gaming out real world scenarios. But when I play a game I just want to have fun. Thanks!
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer That's fair. They have their place and they do lack something in terms of pure fun.
Hi Cody when you talked about memoir 44 with the overload scenario you mentioned that you should have 2 copies of the game. Were you referring to copies of the base game or the expansion? I haven’t played memoir 44 yet. I’m very interested in playing the 8 player overlord scenario. I agree with you war room is my current favorite Ww2 game. I am lucky enough to have a large space to leave it set up when we play. Thank you. Mike LaCasse
@@michaellacasse9811 You can play it with just one copy of the base game and the expansion, but you’ll be used cardboard pieces for half your army units. Ideally, you’ll want two core game copies and one expansion. That’s what I did.
Axis &Allies got me into boardgames 40 years ago when i was in highschool.
It was such a different vibe then monopoly...
Yeah. For me, it took board gaming to the next level. I had never played anything like it before. Thanks!
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer same for me and i also bought all the variants like you, i really liked to play Europe and Pacific togheter.
Great list! I have purchased several games based on your recommendations. Could you do a list on top 25 WW I games?
I've done top ten WWI lists in the past. Maybe at some point I'll do a series like this on WWI. Thanks.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer and Napoleonics 👍
If Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition is your #2, why not link Europe and Pacific 1940 into Global 1940 and have a super-Anniversary Edition?
I've already got a global in anniversary. I like that Europe and Pacific are specific geographic areas.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer Thanks for your reply. Have you ever *tried* Global 1940, though?
@ I haven’t. I’ve heard it’s fun.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer I've played both. Global 1940 is to Anniversary what Anniversary is to 1942.
What would say is the ideal player count for A&A anniversary? I'd also be interested in what you consider to be the top 3 or 5 modern war or near future/future war games... any thoughts you could share?
Personally, I like Anniversary as a two player. I'm not a fan of the downtime between turns otherwise. I've played with four, and that went pretty well, though. You know, I've haven't played a ton of any near future war games, I'm struggling to think of one right now.
I have actually never played Axis and Allies… is it worth checking out if you haven’t played before? Isn’t it similar to Risk?
It's (slightly) heavier than risk. But it is a great light wargame.
A special award goes to the Undaunted series for getting so many women into wargaming!. In fact a lot of women seem to enjoy it more than their husbands.
It is a great game, and my wife really enjoys it. Whatever gets players to the table is a good thing. Thanks.
Give Larry Harris a blue ribbon! :-D
Ha! Indeed.
Hey Cody did you ever try Fields of Fire?
Nope. Fun?
Agree mostly except for Tired of Iran
Ha! Not your cup of tea?
@TheDiscriminatingGamer bad rules, largely not played any more.
man my fondest gaming memories go back to Axis&Allies.
I also really like Attack! (Atlantic + Pacific) from EagleGames. It has more like a "WW2 Sandbox" style to it where you can make your own scnarios or play for the whole world. If you haven't played it, you might like it.
I used to own Attack! but I never got it to the table. Thanks.
I was really into Tide of Iron when it came out. Memoir '44 was my gateway into wargames, but Tide of Iron had some good tactical movement that I really enjoyed. Eventually, it was replaced by Conflict of Heroes which I am surprised did not rank higher on your list. That is a top 5 WWII board game for me, easy. I do have an eye on Sniper Elite and Company of Heroes. Sniper Elite seemed fun, but that offboard movement mechanic really turned me off. Company of Heroes game board looks amazing and the minis are nice, but the plastic movement trays and 3D terrain turned me away from it.
It's too bad. Company of Heroes is fantastic, and Sniper Elite is a hidden movement game, so it is what it is. I love them both, however. If I played more Conflict of Heroes, it might have ranked higher. Thanks.
World in Flames. "Nuff said.
I tried to play a game of that with Ray, and we just couldn't get into it. The rules are not intuitive. If I had someone to teach me I might have liked it more. Thanks.
Tried and tried to love Company of Heroes, but it almost single handedly turned me off to Deterministic Combat. The damage phase is so lethal, and reinforcing takes so long that misplacing a unit by even 1 hex is often disasterous if not fatal. It creates an absurd amount of Analysis Paralysis that added at least an hour (if not more) to the game time since every move is so critical.
The models are exceptional by board game standards, and I love the RTS in a box feel, but there are way better combat systems out there imo.
That's too bad. It hasn't been my experience. I am not a fan of deterministic combat at all, but somehow I fell in love with this game. Thanks.
TY very much Cody!
It's funny because I played Axis & Allies a long time ago and forgot it but recently I found back a copy of A&A1942 2dE > Great one but the Map in Europe in not big enough for all the units (mostly the Germans) > So we dream of a big map for the 1942 edition or why not buy the new Anniversary edition?
Thanks!
The carrier issue could that not be fixed with rule change? or a home rule?
Possibly. I'm a bit of a rules purest, however.
@@douglaspearson4853
Personally, the carriers ability to "regenerate" it's fighter if it's lost every turn, for free too, is a pretty big deal.
How's the move going?
@@brykhousegames2189 All moved in. Thanks.
As an old Axis and Allies player, I was and still am on the edge of buying war room. I've read so many different reviews about it, and I like to command system, the scale and the fact, that you can play different scenarios. But the length, the kind how combat works (I want my Axis and Allies combat!) and the ugly tiles representing the troops (I want my minis!) and the huge amount of time killed it for me. I wished, there existed a game which has Axis and Allies miniatures and simple resources system, but added action cards/decks, Commanders Unit Upgrades etc. Sort of like TI4, but less diplomatic and time consuming.
I really like the tiles in War Room. Honestly, I could take or leave the minis. For me, the game's the thing. As for combat, it's really enjoyable once you learn it. It is a time hog, however, but really not much more than a full game of AA. Thanks.
Axis & Allies "anniversary edition" is number one!😊
It's a great game!
My copy of Warroom is collecting dust...someday...
I hope you get it to the table. It is a fantastic game!
