When my kids were younger we invented lyrics (mostly 'schoolboy' rude) to accompany that opening tune and used to sing them on long car journeys . Very sad to lose the legend.
This sound along with Steve's cheery positive voice used to give me a huge lift at 2pm on a hard working day. Thank you. Thank you Steve Wright and your big show. 🙏
I'm only 22 but every day when my mum would collect me from school she would have had Steve Wright in the Afternoon on in the car on the drive home so I grew up in part listening to him and this theme song was ingrained in my head. RIP to a legendary broadcaster
It's a weird thing isn't? I'm also 22 and I can recall those school runs or driving to see relatives. As a child Steve and his show was like this exciting 3hr journey with bells and whistles, great music, interesting facts and some awesome guests. A part of our childhood. A voice always there Monday to Friday..simply to entertain. It's funny how a radio show can do that to you.
I’m from America and I tune in to his show via TuneIn App, and I am going to miss him when I get news about his death via Sounds of the 80s. Even if it won’t be the same without him, I hope Sunday Love Songs will still be around with his successor. RIP Steve, I’ll listen to you in the Great Radio Station in the sky when I pass.
You got me through my O’grades in 1980 on Radio 1. With Mr Angry and the posse. When you were on you never felt alone. On holidays, on the beach, or when I was trucking and everywhere else. Married kids almost grown up, no radio presenter is or was like you, this generation don’t understand but you were unique, unequalled to any other radio presenter. Your children should be proud of you. Creator of the radio zoo format.
I think being axed from his show was so cruel to a man who was legendary I think it must of crushed his heart and killed him . I loved his show and his tunes were always the best xxx RIP Steve . As always the people pipe up when it's too late 😢
What the BBC did to Steve was a disgrace. Though he put on a brave face, they took away his reason to exist, his public. This is a man thats touched half the population with his wit, professionalism and humour. I cant listen to Radio 2 anymore, its so sad, spent over half my life listening and being entertained by him.Whatever was going on in your life,Steve always made you laugh and smile, Life will never quite be the same. RIP Steve, weve truly lost our "Old Friend". Tata for now.
I discovered Steve Wright in about 2004 and he would brighten up my afternoons when I was delivery driving for 11 hours. What fabulous energetic opening music. RIP.
May I offer my condolences from Ireland to Steve's family and friends. I first encountered his show in 1998 when I had a job that involved driving a lot through England, Scotland and Wales. He was a witty, entertaining and constant radio companion during those years - and for all the years since, though I don't do the driving anymore.
When that iconic sig tune played you knew you were in for a good laugh and some great tunes. The "serious jockin'" slot on a Friday was a must-hear. Though not to everyone's taste it was a testamant to the man's understanding of how even the silliest of radio broadcasting gets people listening; just like that other master of the art - Kenny Everett. I stuck with him through all of the 25+ years since and even emailed the BBC to complain when they cancelled "The Big Show" RIP Steve - you will live for ever in the annals of British broadcasting.
God Bless you Steve. Thank you for the joy you brought to millions. Steve Weight in the afternoon was an institution. Whenever doing jobs it had to be on. It was the law!! Love the show. Maybe it’s because I’m of a certain age but all the greats that have been part of my informative years are sadly passing away.
This always takes me back to being picked up from school by my mum in the late 90s and very early 2000s. Steve Wright was part of our childhood. He always will be and he’ll always be a legend! Rest easy Steve! X
RIP Steve totally professional and the a light has gone out today. Radio will never be the same. Thanks for keeping company on those many afternoons out on my deliveries.
Best jingle ever. Amazing how a radio DJ is there with you every day for years and feels like part of your life. British radio is special and unlike what you get abroad. What a talent. RIP
RIP to the best radio DJ that ever lived. Now in my 40’s, steve wright has been present on the radio my whole life and I can remember his voice from a very early age. So sad rest easy silly boy Serious Resting no G (if you know you know)
RIP Steve Wright. Radio soundtrack and sense of humour soundtrack to my teenage years. A very sad loss indeed. Thanks for everything, Steve. You’ll be much missed. Your shows got me through some tohgh times.
Gutted! This has genuinely knocked me for six. A voice I’ve listened to for many many years, in the afternoons and on Sundays. He made you feel part of the gang and family RIP Steve 😢
A very sad news. Heard it on the radio on my way to work and felt quite sad all day long. Steve Wright was a household name on radio over many years and I remember driving listening to him as soon as the unique Steve Wright show music started playing (Steve Wright in the afternoon). He made my day because back then in 2002 while on the road, I was working as a trade plate car delivery driver and used to drive cars very many miles away from London to all over the UK and the Steve Wright show kept me going on these long journeys. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. I really hope that the Steve Wright afternoon show theme music back in the days will be played at his funeral. May his soul rest in peace🙏
We will ALWAYS love you Steve! You ARE radio!!! I was bought up listening to u. It will never be same. Truly truly missed!! I shed a tear 4u Steve god bless you
I will feel heartbreak every time I listen to Steve's jingle. I grew up with him as a constant. People come and go, but this man was a legend. God I miss you Steve.
In my deepest darkest times through 2020 and 2021 I felt like the radio was my only friend. Whenever I heard this music at 2pm I felt genuine relief and a bit of weight lifted. I've got someone familiar talking to me for the next three hours and making me smile. Your voice was a comfort, and you were a friend when I was at my lowest. Thank you.
My absolute Hero DJ,from listening on the way home from work in the van with my Dad, Radio 1 with Sid The Manager to so many characters, amazing show & later on Steve Wright in the Afternoon on Radio 2, The Best, Glad I got to see him work on The Radio 1 Roadshow on Wish tower slopes in Eastbourne back in the Day,- A pure cut above the rest.RIP 🙏 Will be so so missed by everybody.
Who ever sacked the greatest broadcaster in living memory needs to be named and shamed. Steve Wright was as much part of the British tapestry as Eastenders, Coronation St, The Beatles, Bowie, George Michael, Frank Bruno, Kate Bush, The Rolling Stones, The Queen, Seb Coe, Torvil and Dean, Freddie Mercury, Shirley Bassey, Amy Winehouse etc etc, His passing has brought great sadness, he was literally the soundtrack to our daily lives. RIP Steve x
Thank you for all the laughs and good times in the afternoons over the last 40 plus years on the BBC. It's been a pleasure tuning in every day and hearing your unique brand of humor and wit. Your show has definitely been a staple in my daily routine. I heard you're taking a break from the show and it's not your choice, and I wanted to express my disappointment and my support for you. I know it's hard to be away from something you love and I wish the circumstances were different. I know you are continuing to present Sunday Love Songs but looking forward to your return to daytime radio sir, whenever that might be!
God bless Steve Wright , RIP Steve " absolutely wonderful talented atmospheric broadcaster,, so good, he was there in background as your friend and colleague,,
Steve Wright one of the finest Radio 2 DJs going. the funny thing is my Steve Wright in the afternoon clock has stopped thank you Steve Wright for those brilliant shows you did on Radio 1 and 2 RIP
Steve Wright was the accompaniment to so many days driving for work. Tim Smith, Janey Lee Grace, factoids and oldies. When radio 2 was the solo travellers friend😢
When steve wright played his final record radio gaga, it waz never gonna be the same radio 2 took a legend from us, I haven't listen to radio 2 since then mon/Fri 2 o'clock loved putting my radio on hearing Steve wright witty,😅 music he played absolutely brilliant, there never be a legend like him, Rip steve thank you for the music laughter and just being you ❤😢😢
Just so saddened by this awful news. I was raised listening to Steve by my mum and dad, I'm genuinely devastated, all love to his family, friends and fellow fans.
So sorry to hear the news of his passing having listened to him for over 40 years at work in the car when I was a rep back in the radio one days RIP 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Can’t get used to Steve wright not being on in the afternoon whether it be Radio 1 or Radio 2 after 40+ years of being on BBC Radio his absence has left a Chasm of entertainment. Sunday mornings is at least one bright spark on Radio 2
We just lost a legend in broadcasting. RIP to one of the very best.
Can't quite believe it tbh, voice of my teen years right there.
THE best!
Proper DJ
Hear hear
When my kids were younger we invented lyrics (mostly 'schoolboy' rude) to accompany that opening tune and used to sing them on long car journeys . Very sad to lose the legend.
Loved listening to his show at work , so entertaining.
As a HGV driver, this was the pinnacle of radio 2, serious jockin’ 🤙🏻
It was and now it will never return as Steve RIP is early gone.
This sound along with Steve's cheery positive voice used to give me a huge lift at 2pm on a hard working day. Thank you. Thank you Steve Wright and your big show. 🙏
This theme tune and Steves voice made you feel better as soon as you heard them, He was a natural broadcaster and will be sadly missed.
Miss hearing this theme at 2 each weekday as well as the non stop oldies. The whole production of the show was like nothing else.
Britain's greatest DJ ever will be so sadly missed RIP Steve you brought us great radio for so many years.
Don't forget Kenny Everett.
Yes of course cuddly Ken, met him once at Capital in the old days of Capital when they were at Euston Tower 🥳👍

I'm 45 but very similar memories from when he did Radio 1.
Still processing it... Wow... Steve, you will always be playing everywhere 😢
Many people like me grew up listening to Steve Wright, makes him a legend, R.I.P
Petition for this to be played at the start of every Radio 2 show for a week in memory of Steve Wright.
Not just a week, just leave it there…in fact let’s just repeat Steve’s shows starting 23 years ago
Fantastic idea!!!!!! Im in!!!
devastated they got rid of the Sunday love song jingle when Michael Ball took over - there should be a petition to get it back !!!!
God bless Steve, thank you for all the afternoons keeping me going throughout the day 😢
