People born in the 1960s and 1970s will have spent their apprenticeships and training on the job listening to him on radio one and getting through a miserable job on a miserable site in miserable weather ,then transferring to radio 2 and his afternoon show getting the whole workforce through the day. Then sunday love songs would get us through washing and cleaning the kichen. For getting me through life , i salute you.
You're so right, a quiet, reliable legend, a best cousin, guy at work (who we had a fond crush on in the 80's). A hell of an impact on our lives leaving genuine grief.
Youngsters today will never understand how big Radio 1 was back in the 70's, 80's and early 90's. The DJ's used to present Top Of The pops aswell as presenting on the radio. Such magical times and Steve was right at the very heart of it. His afternoon show on Radio 1 was amazing, that era of radio was incredible. RIP Steve
I grew up listening to Steve Wright in the Afternoon on Radio 1, then on Radio 2. He was the best with his posse and banter. I am truly shocked and saddened to hear he had passed away.
I remember listening to Steve Wright on the Radio in the early 1980s. He was wonderful. We used to have the radio on at work when I worked in the dole office in Manchester…. the back office! There was a team of about 40 of us and we would all laugh at Mr Angry yelling down the phone and all the cast of characters. Steve Wright had a beautiful voice and great energy. I am 60 years old and I bet a lot of people of my “vintage” will be very sad and feeling very nostalgic after hearing of Steve’s sudden passing. R.I.P Sir and thank you for the happy memories x
Steve got me through lockdown driving long lonely hours in my van, not being able to see my children family and friends, I looked forward to his show every day. Rest in peace Steve and thank you for everything. And shame on the bbc for axing his show.
I stopped listening to radio 1 when Mayo left the breakfast show... after listening to various commercial radio stations I went to radio 2... became a big fan of Wogan...Ken and Steve again.... really appreciated him during lockdown.....it really is like a member of my family has died
One of my favourite memories of him was on Sunday love songs when Alan Clarke from the Hollies sent a request in asking for ‘The air that I breathe’ for his wife on their anniversary 😁
BBC knew Steve was a workaholic radio man and still they chopped him down to two , two hour shows SLS and POTP 😢 Even though I'm sure he was told in good time, it can't have been easy to just stop on that last Serious Jockin ❤ loved him
They've been inundated with messages of love for Steve Wright....but no mention of messages of hate for Helen Thomas & her fellow management "woke-ers" at the BBC who treat him like shit.
What a bunch of Hypocrites, any bbc show should be banned or at least shamed into NOT paying these false tributes to Steve. The way that cow sacked him and made sure he kept his mouth shut by offering the carrot of letting him keep the couple of hours on Sunday and this never materialising digital stuff they promised is sickening. If they held Steve in such high esteem why sack him? Especially to replace him by someone whose only qualifications are box ticking from the gay box. Oh and no dig at Gary Davies here, another quality legend from the old radio 1 stable (before woke corruption)
@@davidchamberlain5425 With Steve’s longevity it could certainly be argued I guess. One thing is certain however, radio will be proper with his absence.
WHY DID ANY OF THE GREATS GET TAKEN OFF THE AIR WHEN NOW WE SEE A 20% DECLINE IN RADIO 2 LISTENERS ????? CAN I HAVE THE 100k PLUS A YEAR JOB BECAUSE I CAN COCK IT UP JUST AS QUICK !!!
And then the bbc gave Scott mils his slot?? really? i always switch over at 2pm now. i can think of much more better DJ's, Gary Davis would of been perfect
Steve was such a great guy and professional. Sadly not qualities shared by these horrendous, talenteless and tasteless one show presenters... Both utterly awful and need taken off air and unemployed
BBC One Show producer pre-interview wokery instructions...''Don't mention any of Steve's characters from his Radio 1 days, it might upset our singular minority viewers, especially the hairdresser, social worker, angry, mad, fish filleter & Mick Jagger fans...'' 😉
@ritch195 Exactly. I’ve never really seen the problem. In any job younger people have to come in and replace the old people eventually. It gave Steve Wright the opportunity to retire for a few years before he died which is a good thing not a bad thing.
I worked in a mobile phone workshop in the 90's, Radio 2 and the Steve Wright show was on every afternoon, I noticed it was produced to a formula, pretty much rigid, with never an opportunity missed to read out " dear Steve love the show " and of course it was 'the Big Show??' I found it contrived, repetitive, and irritating, how it continued for so long was a mystery to me.....he was a nice bloke, and he was very popular, its a shame he died, but was his programme that good?
You can’t please everyone but i bet Steve pleased 99.99% of the radio 2 listeners unlike the so full of themselves so called entertainers on radio 2 these days thank goodness for greatest hits radio.
The general consensus outweighs your opinion which like arse holes everyone has got one, funny thing is why didn't you listen to something else while you were doing your interesting job,

Totally right I started listening to him when I was 17, painting new houses back in 1980!
A legend with no scandals.👍❤
You sir are 100% bang on . Thank you for your comment 👍🏻👍🏻

Nice words, also Gary Davies, one of the best too 👍
But I hope we don’t lose Gary too soon too.
Gary Davis should replace Zoe Ball!

I would like to ask Elvis to take care of our Steve Wright.
So he's not lonely tonite?
Gary Davies is a bit of a Steve Wright to me, great radio back then to work away to

Steve Wright referred to Gary Davis as the Omar Sharif of Manchester.

He didn't mean much to the bbc they got rid of him. Wogan gone. Ken Bruce left. But they kept Jeremy Vine🙄
Vine's the best weekday presenter now on Radio 2.
