    I don't understand why people get so bent over his form or if he's out of breath. That isn't the point of the video. I could of sworn this was a video showing off what the sword can take and do. From what I've seen, Nodachi typically have hilt lengths of about 12-13" and blade length of around 4 ft, whereas Nagamaki have blades that are about 3 ft and hilts that are around 2 ft. The website states that this sword has a 34" blade and a 23" handle which means that it is almost a perfect match for the description of a Nagamaki, it must of simply been a naming mistake. But in the end names don't change the effectiveness of a blade, it's still a deadly weapon no matter what you call it.

    The proportions between the blade and tsuka (handle) would suggest that this is actually a nagamaki, as it’s around 50/50, a nodachi or odachi, if you prefer, has a blade that covers about 2/3 of the overall length.

    • @redfaux74
      @redfaux74 4 роки тому

      Not every Nodachi is identical. Not every Samurai sword was exactly the same length. If a sword is made for you specifically, it is tailor made for your strength, your height and your weight. There are thicker Samurai swords, thinner.... The same is true of the Nodachi. The only standard about it is the much longer handle and longer blade. Used against men on horseback (the horses specifically).

    • @tsgillespiejr

    • @superkaiocant
      @superkaiocant 4 роки тому +1

      @@redfaux74 Well nagamaki usually had a blade to hilt ratio of 1;1 but in some cases the hilt could be slightly longer than the blade, or the blade could be slightly longer than the hilt (much like the nagamaki in this video). Must I also note that nodachi/odachi were at least 3 shaku in blade length, which is 35 or maybe 36 inches, whereas the blade here is shorter than that. Sorry dude.

    Japanese martial arts, even the ones with swords, don't use the arms to cut, but the whole body, exactly like in many fighting sports like boxing, you must use your hips/guts (called "hara" in japanese) to have strength. So that demonstration by big muscled mustached guys is just far from a real nodachi style, not even talking about the quality of the sword that is more a nagamaki than a nodachi.

    • @heywhofrodat7552
      @heywhofrodat7552 9 років тому +10

      ***** it's not that we expect them to be japanese swords men. But I can tell you just from watching, their movements and leg positioning, they are not trained in a weapon style. And last lastly why is the blade so short? It's suppose to be 49 inches? Not 36 lol.

    • @heywhofrodat7552
      @heywhofrodat7552 9 років тому +3

    • @heywhofrodat7552

      @theguileraven7014 9 років тому +4

      ***** "Not all Nodachi are the same length. This model was inspired by a historical example. Go figure..."
      The blade has to be a certain length in order to be classified as a nodachi. 3 shaku or 35-36 inches is how long it needs to be. The historical example they worked off of is most likely a nagamaki and they just didn't know the difference. If the blade is roughly the same or only somewhat longer than a normal katana but with an extended hilt; it's called a nagamaki.

    That is the one factor I've wanted to see from cold steel. You can have a tough and sharp weapon but it does you no good if you can't wield it like an extension of your arm.

    I really enjoy your Pig cutting videos 💀 very entertaining! I own one of your Dragonfly O-tanto. Your O-tanto is the second sharpest sword I own. Second only to my Nihonto a 223 year old Shimizu Jinnoshin Nobutaka Samurai sword. I plan on buying a Chisa Katana from you very soon! Your Shinken blades are very sharp and extremely tough ! I know a lot of people talk shit about your videos and your swords but I love them both! Keep up the Great work guys! Look forward to seeing new videos in the future.

    I will continue to purchase CS products and will be ordering one of these Nodachis.
    Word of advise, if you are prone to thin skin, don't post videos on youtube or disable comments.
    Fact is, you won't always get possitive comments, learn to take these with a grain of salt. It is not a personal attack on you as a human being.

    This is a very good sword; I am a proud owner of one. Hanwei has discontinued their Odachi, maybe Cold Steel can step in and fill the gap and make a very long Odachi of their own (this model here is a Nagamaki).

    1:13, i realize you make a cut on a very large i assume tatami matts (Assumed because i am not sure what they are made of, and that's not the color I'm used to seeing, so i am not sure), I have experience with katanas, but i only use regular sized tatami matts. What is the off-chance a regular katana could do that 1080 or 1095 CS blade?

    yup its a nagamaki Japanese: (長巻, literally "long wrapping) the terminology gets lost since the koshirae ( fittings which includes the handle size etc) aren't strictly traditionally fashioned , but nevertheless ive used one of these and they are quality steel my friend ^^

    • @genghiskhan6809
      @genghiskhan6809 3 роки тому

      That and since the nagamaki evolved from the nodachi, early nagamaki can be hard to tell apart from nodachi.

    I bought one of these a couple years ago, aaaand the bottom of the handle broke. About the last 5 inches of the handle is hollow wood, the tang did not reach the bottom. Don't know how it broke. But now it's a giant katana. I like it much better this way.

    The whole sword is around 68 inches and the blade alone is usually around 49 inches. Katanas, on the other hand, average 35-40 inches or so in total length.

    Lynn, Robert and all of the rest of the guys featured in this video are martial artists. True technique can be seen in each of their swings. I dare anyone calling them "fat-asses" to say it to their face. They would fuck you up so fast you wouldn't know what happened until your mama woke you up in the hospital the next day to tell you. Not only that, but Cold Steel is an all American company that you should be proud to support.

    Ehh... nagamaki usually had a blade to hilt ratio of 1;1 but in some cases the hilt could be slightly longer than the blade, or the blade could be slightly longer than the hilt (much like the nagamaki in this video). Must I also note that nodachi/odachi were at least 3 shaku in blade length, which is 35 or maybe 36 inches, whereas the blade here is shorter than that. My apologies
