I used your recipe last year at Christmas it was so good I wound up making two so I'm back watching again preparing to make it again for Christmas I'm 61 years old and have been making red velvet cakes for 40 years but yours is the best easiest recipe I've ever used! Thanks!
I can't even tell you how many red velvet recipes I've tried that just did not taste anything like red velvet. This recipe is perfect, tastes just as good as a red velvet cake at a bakery. I've been searching and searching for the right red velvet cake recipe and this is it! Thank you!!
This is the BEST red velvet cake and icing recipe I’ve tried, and I’ve tried MANY!!! I have baked this only twice so far, but it will now ALWAYS be my FIRST choice whenever I am in the mood to bake a cake. Delicious, super moist, just the right texture, and the icing is the PERFECT consistency and sweetness level. Thank you so much Alexus, you have permanently ENDED my search for the best red velvet cake on earth since it just can’t get any better than this. Super easy instructions, very FAST cake.
This recipe was excellent. I tried the Preppy Kitchen recipe of John Kennel and it was awful and dense. This one was moist and soft. Highly recommend anyone who’s making a red velvet cake to make this. And it’s so easy, doesn’t need a Stan mixer or creaming butter nonsense. Simply and delicious. I used regular all purpose flour, and vinegar + milk instead of butter milk, and added the additional vinegar as she did and it turned out fine. Thank you Alexus.
I Just LOVE you. You do not GATEKEEP ANYTHING lol I've been baking for about a year and the comment you made about letting your cakes sit in the freezer for about an hour because it will make it easier to coat was the best tip I could receive yet! I normally would let my cakes cool then coat them but I can tell this will be a method I will use from here on out!
First time making a red velvet cake, never cared for them, now I'm HOOKED! This cake is AWESOM. I also piped frosting for the first time, cake was too pretty to cut, but I did. This recipe is a KEEPER. I love your style. Thank-you.
Girrrrrl! Lemme tell you something. This recipe right here is the truth. I’ve tried quite a few red velvets so far but this one right here is amazing. Super moist and it doesn’t crumble like the rest I’ve tested. This is a true red velvet! This is the recipe I’ll be making from now on! No other red velvet compares to this recipe.
@@monicarichardson2086 it happens lol! Sometimes mine will come out too runny. Cream cheese frosting is tricky sometimes especially if you are in a hot, humid area. I live in MS and it’s always hot here. So sometimes my frosting doesn’t do well even in my house
Made these today for Christmas Eve, since my toddler “4” wanted to bake cupcakes and my 12 year old daughter said “these cupcakes are so good and soft I can’t even describe the taste because their so good” I’m glad I went on with your recipe.
I made this and I LOVED it and got tons of compliments on it. On top of that it is super easy to make. At first I was skeptical, never added the sugar to the flour before but hands down, this was the best.

I had to circle back to this video and say a few words … I made it for Christmas and this is by far the most moist recipe I have tried I’ve made a lot of red velvet cakes but this will always be my go to recipe
I make red velvet cakes at Christmas for family & friends for Christmas gifts. I have used the same recipe for 40 years & mine is almost exactly as yours, but mine only calls for 1 cup buttermilk. I just want to be sure you use 2 (two) cups buttermilk. I wasted a lot of ingredients once using an online recipe with a typo. I love your frosting technique! It looks WONDERFUL!! I usually use nuts in my frosting, but I'm going to leave out the nuts & pipe it on. I may sprinkle some chopped nuts on top. I will start making my layers in November & freeze them & take them out as I need them. I already have my boxes that they'll be in & wrapped with beautiful ribbons & bows.
Mary is your recipe from the years of 1969 to 1972 time? I made for years this favorite recipe of a Red Velvet Cake and as without thinking family would misplace it, they did. It's been lost to me now for decades and I've always searched trying to find the version that was popular in Southern states in the winter of 1971. I know it took a full glass bottle of red food coloring ( 3 T. I believe that equaled to being). I believe it was 3 T. cocoa powder as well, 3 eggs. The eggs may have been only 2. 1½ cup of Wesson Oil and all the normal rest of the ingredients. If you or anyone reading my text has this particular recipe, I would dearly love to have it.
I'm in the UK so can anyone advise what flour I can use please as we either have Self Raising flour(we use to make sponge cakes) or Plain flour (for a heavier cake I believe you would call coffee cake and think its classed as All Purpose flour your side.
Mary, does your recipe call for a certain brand of cooking oil? A name brand one? I had my recipe from Dec. of 1971. As it was, my mom had it, and I never got it back. I have tried to find this same exact one. It's lost to me. I hope you might have it. Thank you for your time.
@Melissa A Melissa, the recipe I had from 1971, called for Self Rising, too, I believe. If not, at any rate, it is what was used. It was the best cake ever! Also, I believe Cake Flour is a lighter weight flour for making cakes. You are right in that Plain Flour is indeed All-Purpose Flour. Self Rising has the baking powder already in it. I can't remember if baking soda is in it, too or not.
I made this cake this past weekend and my family loved it. In fact they thought I had bought the icing. I didn't know whether to be insulted or elated. Lol. Thank you so much, for this great recipe.
