  • Brought this 1984 Porsche 944 into the shop for some minor repairs. This car is a factory sunroof delete model with sport seats and staggered fuchs wheels. I will be changing the belts and water pump. In this video will be investigating some steering issues and a small coolant leak before tearing everything down.

    Excellent project! You should do more of these ‘project’ car videos with a final video showing the ‘Before’ and ‘After’.

      Will do! I have three cars here at the shop that will be painted. Two are restos while one is a 924 Carrera GT-S tribute that needs the body re-worked! Just going to be a while before the videos are out but we're working as fast as possible to get them done! Thanks!

      Thanks! Yeah I've heard quite a few people say they've had their original head gasket leak in the same spot. So it must be a fairly common issue!

    Hello edreas,where did you get your knowledge about 944?love your channel😎

      Thanks! I bought my first one 20 years ago and started working on it. The car needed everything so I had to restore everything. It even had a blown engine so I tore it apart and later turbocharged it. So not a lot that I didn’t learn from that experience.

    Great videos. Thank you. How much would you charge for an engine rebuild?

    • @edredas
      @edredas  5 років тому

      Thanks! It depends on the level of work that you'd want. A simple rebuild with just new bearings, rings, and gaskets would probably only cost around $3k including labor. However on a complete rebuild where everything is being replaced the parts alone cost about $3k so when you factor in cleaning the block and having the parts re-plated it, etcetera it can quickly climb to about $5k or more. I hope that helps!

      @@edredas thank you. I would love to hire you to help me replace my clutch someday. I'm from Wisconsin but maybe we could figure something out. What state are you located? If I came there and we did the work together, what would you charge for your services? I want to learn how to do this work and you are so knowledgeable of the 944.

    • @edredas
      @edredas  5 років тому +2

      I'm in North Carolina, not too far from Charlotte. I'd probably give you a good deal on doing the clutch. Normally, I charge about $1200 but if you help I might do it for $500. Thanks!

      @@edredas That would be amazing. Garages up here are starting at $2700 for that job. I'll be in touch... Thank you.

    edredas, why do you swap out the 5R oil cooler for the 6R? Is the 6R that much better or does it fix a problem?

    • @edredas
      @edredas  5 років тому

      It fixes an issue. In the factory workshop manual it states to discard the 5R housing and replace it with the 6R which can be shimmed. Perhaps to prevent seal failure. That said I don’t believe you can even get reseal kits for the 5R housing. I hope that helps!

    i need to replace the rear main seal in my 87 944 , Do you think it's easier to pull the motor out or drop the trans., torque tube ect. ?

    • @edredas
      @edredas  5 років тому +1

      Ouch, neither one is a particularly fun job... but its probably quicker and easier to pull the trans than the engine. Just be sure to have a trans jack. If you don't then it won't be easy at all... I hope that helps!

    Great video, thanks. I just ordered a tee shirt! I do have a question completely off topic but my headlights have a very annoying habit of cycling open and closed every time I turn them off. it just started a couple of weeks ago. I am wondering where the home switch is? I assume there is some kind of switch that shuts off the headlight motor in the down position? Any help would be appreciated, I have a Hanyes manual which is completely worthless, lol. Thanks again for the videos!!

    • @edredas
      @edredas  7 років тому

      Hey Thanks! It sounds like the relay on the side of your headlamp motor is bad. If you pull back the boot that is on the left side of the motor you should see it. Its a common relay that would be in stock at your local parts store for about $5. You might try replacing that first and see if it help!

    hey edredas, have you resealed a 944 oil cooler? Im about to reseal my 83's but not sure if it is worth removing my header. looking for your opinion to see if you actually get alot of room by removing the header. thanks and great video as always!

    • @edredas
      @edredas  7 років тому

      Hi, Kyle! Yep, I have re-sealed dozens and even have two videos on resealing them! One video is just some information on resealing and the other is the actual removal then installation. That said, I don't believe it's possible to remove the oil cooler without at least unbolting the headers from the head. Even then you can't get it out to reseal it without completely removing the headers or removing the water pump, like I plan to do with this car. I hope that helps!

      Sounds good! I'll be doing the belts and water pump on this car then documenting the processes thoroughly. Hopefully those videos will be up soon, but if you run into any issues, feel free to ask any questions!

    Removing the cam gear not necessary unless seal is leaking. Save yourself the time

    • @edredas

      It doesn't take but a second to remove the bolt so why not remove it? I always replace the cam seal, collar, onion skin, and the bolt itself when working on engines.
