Indiana Short Line Railroad Switching Customer, Indiana Eastern Railroad! Huge Okeana Trestle IERR

- Indiana Eastern Railroad. Railway Switching 2 customers at the end of the railroad branch line. This shortline railway only has 2 customers on the nearly 30 miles of main line track running from Cottage Grove, Indiana with the CSX connection down to Fernald, Ohio. Trains normally run railroad east to Fernald on Mondays and Thursdays. First they switch the interchange tracks on CSX. When on CSX they operate on 160.230 during switching and use 160.320 to talk to the dispatcher. After they get back on their own tracks they switch to 160.965 for the remainder of their trip. After switching the interchange and working their sidings, they cross over the railroad diamond in Cottage Grove and then head to their 2 customers at the end of the line nearly 30 miles away. This video shows the chase including the huge trestle at Okeana, Ohio ( that I always mispronounce ). It shows some of the switching including crossing the 3 track level crossing near the end of track. This line has heavy welded rail with excellent roadbed so trains move along pretty fast. It can be a little tricky to chase since some areas don't get internet. The locomotive is an EMD GP38-2 that was recently painted in this awesome livery. IERR also has an SD9 that I have filmed and they have another dead SD9 on a siding at their shop area. I filmed this on January 23, 2020 with a lifelong friend of mine. Nice addition of information on radio frequencies used by the crews. I remember when very few railfans knew about listening in on RR frequencies. Today it is common knowledge and programmable scanners are easy to find. Back in the later 1960s a friend and I saw a short article in "Trains" magazine about listening in to train talk and the range of frequencies assigned by the FCC to railroads. The article also mentioned something about crystal scanners and needing the correct crystal frequencies to operate the radio. That was the only info we could find. Only a couple stores even sold scanners in Baltimore. So, I made a trip to the FCC office at the Federal Bldg. downtown and dug through the public accessible frequency books to write down each frequency assigned to Baltimore area railroads. I gave those to my friend who called each RR to verify which of their assigned frequencies were actually active. Crystals weren't that cheap and we didn't want to blow a lot of money only to find the frequency to be dead. A couple RR people he talked to were reluctant to give out frequency information, but did so anyway when they realized we already knew them all and only needed verification of the active ones. We both bought a Bearcat crystal scanner and ordered the crystals. It was pretty cool to start hearing crews of the PRR, B&O, and WM talking about train movements.

Yes, I remember back in the 70s having to spend $5 per crystal and going to Radio Shack to get them. I bought the very first programmable pocket scanner back around 1980. It was the Bearcat 100. We use to buy books every year to look the frequencies up. Today they are all on the internet and easy to find. I have one pocket scanner that has all of the normal railroad frequencies programmed in it so if I don't know what frequency they are talking on I can use that radio to find it as soon as they say something and then program it into one of my favorite scanners. The price of scanners has come way down. I use to spend $600 on a pocket scanner and today you can buy a brand new el cheapo for only $30 that does the same stuff and more than the old ones. Just be careful in the hand full of states where it is illegal to have a scanner in your car without a license. Kentucky, New York, Florida, you have to watch those states. I am a licensed Tech Plus so I am covered but sometimes you can run into an officer who isn't aware of the laws. I could write a book on that.
Yes, I still have my Bearcat 100. I bought it about the same time you bought yours after the crystal scanner died on me. Unfortunately, where I live in MD now is too far from any active rail lines to pick up chatter. I only get to use it occasionally for police/fire or the weather channel. I did hear something years ago about certain states having laws concerning scanners in cars. Thanks for the reminder.
It's nice to see a short line take pride in their engines by painting them. I wish CCET would take the time to paint theirs.

I'm good if they are money strapped. Lets hope the new development at half acre rd. adds some more customers. It would even be nicer if they could add a spur line into GE on Jaybird Rd. In adams county. They could transport between evendale and peebles that way.

A shortline with pride.
This is what a short line should look and sound like. Great pride of ownership, incredible office and livery. Should make many other lines embarrassed to be on the tracks. Good stuff---pass it on to those who care.

Thats one nicely kept old school locomotive. It shows they have pride in their operation. Even though it is a shortline, hopefully companies will take notice in the shape of their equipment and operation and they can pick up some more customers on the line, it would be cool to see that train and the dead one back to life pulling longer mixed freight trains with boxcars, flats, gondolas.
I live here, I'm pretty sure they restored it. A few years ago, they have a red one as well.❤

The shortline I worked for had a hodgepodge, mix matched, mis guided and mislead batch of ex C&O GP7’s...still painted in their original paint, then we went with ex CSX and Chessie painted GP16’s and 38’s, to CN painted GP40-2’s..except for the 16’s, everything finally got painted to a nice scheme. Now we’ve moved into ex CN/Alstrom rebuild SD40-3’s and these now have a pristine paint job. Something the shortline can now be proud of.

I especially enjoyed this video, as I have seen the places shown here many times but have never actually seen a train running on this line. Nice to see, especially on that big trestle.
I use to live along the old C & O Indiana line where it ran through South Fairmount heading down into the railyards in Queensgate. It was sad to see the line get torn out and the trestles removed. Saw a lot of trains going to and from the cheviot yard.

That crossing in Peoria was on State Line Rd. You could stand on one side and be in Ohio and the other side would be Indiana. Nice video. 👍

The line is maintained well enough for the train to travel appox 30 mph. Long before the section into Cincinnati union terminal was removed, Amtrak used this to Chicago. The pace was set around 50-55 back then

Following the rail line on the map, there's an abandoned spur that leads to what is now a nature preserve. Quite a story behind that, the Fernald Preserve. Former uranium processing complex, one of the most comprehensive environmental cleanups ever done.
They had to ship all the contaminated soil out by train. Required over hauling the tracks for that. I wish I would have filmed it

Excellent video. Not a lot of time for map checks between segments! Had to jump in the vehicle and haul butt to the next crossing. Nice old Chevy Caprice parked at the end of the line.

This was the former C&O mainline from Cincinnati to Chicago, it now ends before
the Great Miami river “ old bridge columns still in the river “when intact this line went down through Bridgetown Cheviot and Price Hill . If you go to the Cincinnati Eastern railroad FB page , I’ve posted many pictures of how this line looked down through Bridgetown , Cheviot and Price Hill many years ago , this line was abandoned from Cincinnati to this point in 1979
The tall trestles through Price Hill were such a cool sight to see

@Tony Freeman I've always wondered what those High hoods look like on the inside is there only a seat on each side or behind the hood does it go all the way across like a like a wide cab except there's not the window all across it instead the high hood?

Nice action, I live about 5 miles from this location. you may know this already about the line. The north south run is what remains of the C&O that rain north thru boston,in continuing to richmond,in with the line ending there now. I believe the richmond depot may still be standing. there are still some switching yards on the south side of richmond by the recycling center. back in the day it also connected with the PRR just to the north of the C&O depot. it serviced a lot of industries back in the day. it continued north northwest to muncie,in and beyond. Cant remember when it was abandoned for sure,30 + years. cardinal greenway bike and walking now that still goes all the way from richmond to muncie. I have some footage of the SD9 that is sitting on the siding.

fun fact about this line You mentioned fernold Which was a nuclear power plant electric In cincinnati This track was built to get rid of the taint it dirt that was full of radiation . When the plant melted down

Wow I haven't seen one of those high nose locomotives in over 30 years. I didn't know some of those were still in service. Only thing I didn't like about those was you could only see one side of the track instead of a full panaramic view.

Paint looks great! The only thing I'd do differently is put green striping on the nose.
I like that they thoughtfully put a rotating orange light on their cab roof, hopefully it's in use when necessary. How many large railroads think to put something so simple on their own locomotives?

At fifteen minutes into the video I noticed something a little interesting about the top of the cab of that locomotive ,along with the old firecracker style VHF antennas is what looks like an 18 inch whip antenna with a grey band in the middle . Now those kind of antennas are usually for UHF radios , wonder why that's on a locomotive considering most railroad communications is VHF-high band in the 160 to 161 MHz band .
Their main frequency is 160.965. I don't think they use UHF except for the end of train device
@@JawTooth True ,but I've seen those kind of mobile whip antennas on vehicles that had radios in the 453 and 460 MHz band . Someone in one of the other comments suggested that locomotive might be equipped for radio control .
