You always make me laugh, but on this special day, you brought a tear to my eye when you told the story of the gifting of a gratitude tree to England for their assistance in WWII. My 104 year old Dad who still lives by himself and does all his own cooking (Arnes, that's for you) fought in the Pacific in WWII. He and his six brothers were blessed to survive and all come home.

My father served in the South Pacific Theater in WWII in the United States Army Air Forces. Most of the time he was in Australia and surrounding areas and also spent time in the Philippines. I thought about him while watching Arne and Carlos on Sunday building the lighted Christmas star. My father would have enjoyed the video, then gone right out to get the supplies to build a star himself.

What a joy. Just lighting the tree on the first is beautiful. Well everything is beautiful. The tablecloth looks vintage and the stories are wonderful. The opportunity to slow down and enjoy the simple things. The quilting group I am a part of in the United States has been looking at and seeking Hygge. What a gift. Anyway, thank you Arne & Carlos. I look forward to experiencing advent in a different way this year.

My dad used to "modify" our tree because we always took one that was crowding another tree. This choice always meant it had sides that were not as lovely. My father would drill a hole in strategic places and insert a pine bow from our trimmings creating a lovely full tree for our house.

Thank you for sharing your memories of your Dad it reminded me of my Dad doing the same thing over sixty years ago. Along with that memory has come more memories of Christmas in the nineteen fifties. We would come home from midnight Mass the bare tree standing in the living room ready for Santa to decorate while we slept. When my younger sister and I woke up up we found a beautiful decorated tree that Santa decorated especially for us because he was a real busy man the presents from Santa were never wrapped he didn’t have time to do both. 🇨🇦💝👍💕🌹when I became old enough to doubt the existence of Santa Claus my parents told me the truth and asked me help them preserve the tradition for my younger sister I got the pleasure of feeling grown up and the memories of helping them decorate the tree for Alices delight

Beautiful setting and a wonderful story, what a way to begin the countdown. My brother and I would always go out with a saw and bring back the best tree we could drag home. They were never very pretty until we decorated it and then it was just magical. The tree would be beautiful and I never wanted to leave it. I never cared much about gifts but the tree was very special to me.

So pleased to be able to connect with you both every day in December. The tree to the UK every year is such a beautiful tradition. Nova Scotia chooses a huge evergreen tree every year to send to Boston Massachusetts. On December 6, 1917 (during World War I) there was a terrible explosion in the Halifax harbour when two ships (one carrying ammunition) collided. Boston sent help. The tree is sent every year to say thank you. The sharing of the trees is such a beautiful symbol. Your first ball on the tree is so fitting.

And this year will be the same - hopefully.

Your story about waiting until the last minute to get your Christmas tree made me remember the year that my father waited so long to get our tree that he couldn’t even find a corner tree. He came home with two trees that were so flawed that we strapped them together to use as a single Christmas tree!
I enjoyed your tree lighting, and the Christmas ball was beautiful. I don’t knit, but I certainly loved your ornament. Thank you for the Christmas cheer!

I love hearing about Norwegian Christmas traditions! As I listen, it seems that my family had some of the same traditions. I did not realize the influence of my Norwegian grandfather on my family. I passed the same ones on to my family, except that we no longer make fattigman. I’m a bit sad about that, because these and butter cookies were great childhood favorites! We do make butter cookies still, with the old family recipe! Perhaps I need to resurrect the fattigman recipe, which I still have! Thank you so much for sharing with us! They loved to give that poor lonely tree a home. As they grew up, we would wait for when the older ones would be home from college to even go look for a tree...insuring the sparse tree every year!

Growing up we lived in desert in California in a very small house and no room for a traditional Christmas tree so my grandparents in Washington state would mail a big box of green Christmas tree style branches
Our dad would shape them in style of a tree on a flat board. This was then stood up against the wall on a table and we would decorate it. These were always my favorite trees and the only ones I remember. I wish I had pictures.

And Carlos...thank you for breaking with tradition and putting up you tree early.X0. And be grateful you don't live with ME...I have 6 trees up and decorated. LOVE the Norwegian Spruce story, the story of finding your own trees, and the Grand flourish as you lit your Christmas Ball tree. Now to my needles.

❤️❤️❤️ we usually have 3 trees but they only go up on the 23rd. But not this year, traditions are made to be broken!! Hope all is well with you, can’t believe it’s just over 6 years since we met you. Where did all this time go??

I see more of you two now, than I do my own family, thanks for cheering me up and being committed to us. You are entertaining as well as sincere, which is a comforting combination 🤗🙏
I love how long your 5 minutes last, I do hope the Christmas tree ceremony still happens in Trafalgar Square.

Thanks for breaking with tradition to bring in a Christmas tree. Love hearing about the corner trees. I hope your tree won't get too dry. Stay safe.

I'm a little late in starting these podcasts. Our family has two birthdays during the first week of December that keeps me busy. I haven't started knitting the balls yet as I am finishing up knitting some hats for donations that are due by Friday, but it is enjoyable to knit while watching you two. I have to say that I find a deeper meaning in "you shouldn't judge a tree by its branches' and that really stood out for me. Thank you.

I loved that you said there could be no tree in the house before Christmas. My family always waited until the week of Christmas holiday, got our tree, and put it up with only the lights on but we were not allowed to light them. Then on Christmas eve Santa and his helpers came to trim the tree for a beautiful surprise on Christmas morning and for the twelve days of Christmas season. I so enjoy your podcasts. Wish I had started knitting long ago but am improving fairly quickly...

Love your spirits but worry about you not having electric teacup warmers and having to drink cold tea. Do they have electric cup warmers in Norway?
Also, I was hoping there was a “tour of your house” episode. Love seeing how people decorate.
      Love from Eagle, Idaho, USA❤️

I have so been looking forward to wrapping up my evening with this advent calendar! As always you never disappoint! I am a busy mom of 3 and caregiver for my husband who was wounded in the Iraq War...when the house is quiet and everyone is down for the evening is when i get to have a cup of tea and knit and catch up on podcasts. Yours is first on my list always. I was actually in London about a decade ago for during the lighting ceremony. What a beautiful tradition. Looking forward to more traditions and stories and knitting balls with you both.

I'm originally from Germany, living in Utah, and my parents still put up their tree on Christmas Eve. Love that tradition. Currently working on the first ball. Hopefully I can keep up with each day! 😊

Yeah 🎄 🥰 I love the Norwegian tree. Every year there's a programme about it on TV all about how it gets here and how it's chosen etc. I've seen it quite a few times, it is HUGE! My sister lives in London so she sees it every year. Ah so happy the first bauble is to commemerate that 🎄🎄 xx

I am a novice knitter and have not learned to knit with 4 needles yet, but I am going on this Christmas adventure with you two. I enjoy learning about your traditions and just being a part of your you tube life. One day I am going to learn to knit Christmas stockings. Thank you for inviting us in.

Thank you for doing these podcasts everyday. We really need to make the season extra special and filled with joy with everything we've had to go through this year. That's why I think it's ok to put the tree up early this year. I love the Christmas balls (baubles). I'm think I'm getting better at knitting them now too.

Oh my....I was so looking forward to this that I actually turned on the tv and UA-cam yesterday....sitting there, with the pattern on my lap...thinking it was December 1 already! 😊
But I had to wait another day. And now you’re here....amidst all these festive Christmas decorations....Bringing us enjoyment, ideas, stories and so much creativity and positivity.... You two make this world truly a little bit brighter! 🌟Thank you so much for doing this. Wishing you a joyous and Peaceful Season. Blessings from the Netherlands.
