One of the best songs you've reacted to in this marathon. Love this band.
Props for doing some indie guys!
Def some punk elements to this. Karen O's live performances were notoriously wild. Simple - yup. Repetitive - yup. Fun - hell yes.
Great analysis as always 👍
One of the best shows I've ever been to was Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
I think you mean
Simple- Yeah
Repetitive- Yeah
Fun- Yeah!
TIME FOR AN INDIE ROCK MARATHON.
Some indie bands to check out:
- Nick Cave & the Badseeds
- Girls vs Boys
- Pixies
The MOTHAFUCKIN DECEMBERISTS!!!
Elliot Smith or Modest Mouse would be cool too.
YYY has a lot of fluidity and variety of style, so trust me when i say... you look deeper and you're gonna see some stuff that would surprise you. disco, gospel, folk, techno, ballads, etc... they really run the gamut. each song is different, each album is different.
Karen O has the best female rock voice of the century. She makes any song sound good.
Cristina Scabbia isn’t too shabby either! Lol (Lacuna Coil)
Sorry I think that honour goes to Bjork.
It's good, but got to go with Skin.
so true
Bjork
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs have some EXCELLENT songs. And I'm really happy you dipped into this genre. There's A LOT of good music to discover. I recommend some polls on indie rock.
And yes that's basically what indie rock means. It tends to be more underground and alternative. But stylistically it can mean a lot. And this band definitely got very big, but maintained that indie style
Ryan pretty much nailed the 'indie' rock live vibe at the end. Little club, little stage, on top of the audience, people just sweating and jumping about, one with the band, not genuflecting on big stars up on the stage.
'Indie' rock is really both things George said: on the most technical level it is simply 'independant' music, not published by 'major' labels... but by its very nature the music that ends up on those independant labels is that which is interesting, creative, perhaps niche appeal, but that doesn't necesarily have enough commercial potential for a major label to make money with, but has an audience somewhere. Of course, some bands rise 'out' of the indie scene to have mass appeal and sell a lot or records... Radiohead for example, who you reacted to, though it's generally in terms of long term success rather than massive short term sales.
The Smiths would be an interesting indie band for you guys to cover. They are the quintessential indie band, and are a huge band in a below the surface way. Their singer, Morrissey is considered one of the great lyricists and is an iconic frontman. Song choice: without any question, 'How Soon is Now'.
I had the absolute privilege of seeing them live in 2007 in downtown Dallas Texas and it’s a night I will never forget. Karen O is an absolute legend. She literally ran up and down that stage for an 90 minutes nonstop. I’ll never forget her “cape” and the spectacular show the band gave that night. I have yet to experience any live concert like it. ‘Kiss, kiss’ / ‘Rockers to swallow’ / ‘black tongue’ tracks are lit af 🫠🤯
You pretty much nailed it. Yyy's at their rawest. That whole album is flawless. I've seen them 3 times live, and they never dissappoint. Karen O is the queen. They like to close their encores with this song. A great closer.
They have become more polished over the years, but you definitely can't pigeon hole them. Maps, Gold Lion, Phenomena, Zero, Despair, Spittin off the edge of the World...all great different sounding songs.
I’m a hip hop fan but this album was one of the first rock albums I listened to
Just wanna say, you picked a dang good album to start your rock-n-roll journey on ^_^
If you want to do more Yeah Yeah Yeahs I'd really recommend "Sacrilege" of their last album Mosquito, amazing song that really shows how far they came as a band.
Other really good ones are Heads will roll and Zero.
yes to all of these
And warrior. Sacrilege and warrior are my two top picks
I would add “Rich”, which is my personal favorite.
Did not think you guys would like this that much, that's awesome! I will tell you that I was dancing at when the DJ played this and when the intro hit, everybody instantly stopped dancing and looked at each other like "oh, shit" and when the song kicked in, the dance floor exploded. It was amazing. And your assessment of the band's origin is spot on.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs, particularly their debut album Fever To Tell, are a super important part of the post-punk revival/indie rock scene in the early 2000s. some other great songs from this album you guys should check out: Y Control, Rich, & of course their most popular song, Maps.
*PLEASE* do a 2000s indie rock marathon! specifically the post-punk revival bands like Interpol, The Strokes, Bloc Party, Two Door Cinema Club, Foals, The Killers, Death From Above 1979 etc. would love to see an indie rock marathon in general, as there are many different flavors. but the post-punk revival stuff is just really fun, danceable rock music.
There are a handful of songs, in my life, that stopped me in my tracks. This is one of them. I couldn't believe the orgasmic noises she was screaming or the disco funk groove on the track. I bought the album the first chance I got!!!
100%
one of my fav bands ever i just love their energy its always a good time. Karen O is unbelievable and shes been a crush of mine since my teens!
Hoping for more from the indie rock resurgence from the 2000's. Interpol, The Walkmen, Stellastar, The National, etc.
Yes! "The Rat" by The Walkmen, please!
Definitely, although my favorite indie rock is from the 90s: Built To Spill, Modest Mouse, Pixies, Elliott Smith, Archers of Loaf, PJ Harvey, The Breeders, Neutral Milk Hotel, Dinosaur Jr, Pavement, etc etc
Very fun song. I don't really listen to indie rock, but it has a charm that no other genre has.
Imagining the other band members just standing playing in the back while KO is bouncing off the walls is insanely accurate
Yeah Yeah Yeahs are one of the finest rock bands of the 00’s, and Karen O might be the decade’s best frontperson. She’s electric on stage. Her vocal range is stunning-she nails the punk rock vibe but can just as easily switch to soft and vulnerable. She’s one of a kind.
Other YYY’s songs I’d recommend:
Y Control
Black Tongue
Heads Will Roll
I love that Ryan thinks "Indie cinema" = The Human Centipede
"Heads will roll "is my favorite.I think you guys will like
Glad you were into this song, YYYs are a great band!!!! It would be interesting to see your reaction to a song with a different vibe, like Maps - which is also very raw (emotionally).
indie rock also often is the antithesis to more progressive stuff. They are more repetitive and raw on purpose. Maybe similar to bebop and cool jazz. Also i think most indie bands prefer their fans to be dancing on their concert more than them being impressed by the technical virtuosity (which doesn't mean, the cant play. Nick zinner is a crazy good rhythm guitarist and composer)
Amazing times were had dancing/rocking out at indie rock shows in the early 00s!!
My dear friend's son is in that band :) Which makes me feel old.
Karen O's rendition of Zeppelin's The Immigrant Song is decent. Mixed by Trent Reznor for the soundtrack of the film The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
I recommend - The Rapture, The Kills, Archers of Loaf and (last but not least) Husker Du.
Love how you described the sound as something you would need to “see in your face”. Live setting etc.. you nailed the feel of their sound and the whole point of the delivery.
Give The Gits a try...."Second Skin" or "Whirlwind" off of their Seafish Louisville release... Seattle band that tragically had their career cut way too short. Mia Zapata (RIP) had a strong voice and wrote some really great lyrics!
You guys are killing it with this marathon, hitting some genre that hasn't seen the sun in a bit.
I know Yeah Yeah Yeahs are “technically” indie rock but I think of them as being post-punk or garage rock first. This band has a lot of swagger and hipness, whereas I usually think of indie bands as being nerdier and more unassuming. But I guess those genre lines got blurred in the early 00s when this stuff started getting played on mainstream radio and MTV.
You guys have no idea how fun they are live… especially when you’re close in the pit 😁
Loved it. Thanks guys!
Y Control is an amazing song by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Fun band.. one of my faves. I love the energy.
Looooved this song back in 2003. Just an awesome raw straight ahead rock song. Glad you guys dug it!
love yalls channel and def down for more yeah yeah yeahs reactions. i do love them!!
This song has ATTITUDE! Good review.
You two would love the collaboration Karen O & Danger Mouse. The album Lux Prima is a gem. One of my fave albums of the last few years.
I lived in LA when this came out and this is really part of my LA soundtrack. Fever to tell is a great record.
Karen o did the soundtrack to the movie “where the wild things are”. . . It is so beautiful.
Women who rock suggestion: Warpaint. Phenomenal band, especially their live performances.
Warpaint are great
Maps is a great song to look at too. I saw them years ago in Melbourne. Just a great band.
Yes! Used to rock around the house with my girls to this album!
y'all have no idea how happy i am when i saw that you guys reacted to the YYYs..... and my favorite song of theirs too. they're by no means "underground" but they really are an underrated band. the true definition of underrated for me tbh - they're well-known but they don't get nearly enough credit as much as they should. they inspired a lot of pop songs with their song "maps"
Couple years ago there was a concert that was in honor of Lou Reed and Karen oh along with Nick Zimmer did a song called “vicious” which was one of Lou Reed songs. Search that she did a fantastic job singing that song.
Maps tho. I mean, I could step up on my usual Decemberists soap box, but since we’re on Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Maps is the one for Indie. It had mainstream appeal, but it’s so different than the typical stuff that was being produced in the early 00s. It’s somehow mainstream and not.
"Maps" was a huuuge hur for them. Its slower and more somber but still really rockin. Just not fast.
"Dragon Queen" from It's Blitz is a GREAT deep cut for them. I'm SO GLAD you all listened to Yeah 3X! This band came out with some new stuff recently after YEARS of waiting I'm here for it! Thanks for posting.
Wow I would have never expected you to do this song, and what a great reaction to it. Love you guys
It was done at least a year ago... It's weird it's showing up like it's a recent video 🤔
Karen O is a great front woman and you guys should definitely react to other songs by Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Do SPIRITBOX!
Female fronted band with an amazing vocalist, Courtney LaPlante.
Try Bleach Box, Blessed Be, Belcarra, Holy Roller or The Mara Effect Live.
Spiritbox are great. Whole package.
great band - good to see them appreciated!
Their style is definitely more punk-esque. So transitions or surprises arent really a big part of the genre. Its more about the vibe and the attitude and aggression. Punk was always just about not giving any fucks and just going for raw emotion.
Suggestions for other parts:
-No Doubt - Just A Girl
-Paramore - Ignorance (or any song tbh)
-The Cranberries - any song (Zombie is the best pick but you prob heard that one)
-Florence + The Machine - Dog Days Are Over
For another female punk vibe, check out Bikini Kill. Revolutionary riot girl band and influenced music in tremendous ways, both as a band and personally. Example: The drummer (Tobi Vail) dated Kurt Cobain and she wore Teen Spirit deodorant. The singer (Kathleen Hanna) wrote, "Kurt smells like teen spirit" on Cobain's bedroom wall. He apparently found inspiration there 🙂
Entire album is 🔥🔥🔥
Fever To Tell is one of my favorite albums of all time.
Yoooo y'all should check out The Shins and the lead singer's stuff with Danger Mouse under the Broken Bells name. Broken Bells has a new album coming in Oct.
Karen O also teamed up with Danger Mouse on their Lux Prima album
This is my favorite band of the last 20 years
I totally agree. I like Yeah yeah yeahs, and London Grammar... still waiting on more artists that are good enough since 1999.
Did a double take when I saw this post. Not surprised it has relatively few views here but definitely this band deserves more reactions.
YEAH YEAH YEAAAAAH
Yeah it’s punk!!
Yo… David Pajo was also the guitarist in the legendary band Slint. Please check them out!
this album is so good, glad you did this song
The Indie Well Is Deep & Rich. More, More, More 🎉 And Live- Most Of These Songs Move The Crowd. They’re Danceable.
She's unbelievable live, check out David Letterman, he had them on many times. She's one of kind.
Bjork: If you are looking for female artist to react to, you should listen to Bjork.
You guys absolutely have to hear Song For The Dead by Queens of the Stone Age. One of the coolest intros ever composed. The whole song is amazing though. Really cool grooves and rhythms and the drums are insane.
Nova Twins - Taxi. Female vocalist/guitarist and female bass and they both rock!
I love yeah yeah yeahs. There’s just not enough groups like them. I love a female lead like Karen O. This isn’t my fav song by them, Warrior is my all time fav, followed by sacrilege. Also another group with a female lead, Metric has some great songs. My fav are Gold, Guns, Girls, also Monster Hospital & succexy. Those are my top 3 metric songs. They’re more like a less punk, more electronic YYY’s.
+1 for Gold, Guns, Girls by Metric
This song is an explosion of sex and rock and roll. Love it.
Karen O did a great cover of Led Zeppelin s Immigrant Song for the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo movie!
Love Yeah Yeah Yeahs! Karen O rocks. Please do some Band-Maid :)
Y Control would have been my pick for first song from Yeah Yeah Yeah's, but still, great band.
My jam! Love a good jam song!!
7th street Entry which is part of First Ave(Princes home base) would be perfect venue for them
This was a fun song to listen to!
"Skeletons" by Yeah Yeah Yeahs is phenomenal. It's slower and I feel much more emotion from it, especially in her voice.
ERRA
Gungrave
Snowblood
House of Glass
Nigh to Silence
if you need another woman who rocks, you need to check out Concrete Blonde - Heal It Up or their song Bloodletting. Johnette Napolitano is one of the most under rated singers ever. Then check out the version of Everybody Knows
You guys mentioned David Pajo... now you gotta do Slint "Good Morning, Captain". His first band and hugely influential. The album Spiderland gets 10/10 from lots of people and deservedly so.
Thanks for reacting to this 🫶🏽
This isn’t really indie rock. It’s punk rock. YYYs later did more pop rock but in their early days it was punk. Fever To Tell is extraordinary, partly because Karen O wasn’t trying to spare her voice, she was throwing it everywhere. After this she toned down vocals, understandably. But I do love her reckless voice in this and the EP before this. Nothing like it.
You should check out their song maps
Yeah, dudes. Small bar, lots of energy from the band and the crowd, and lots of booze. Good Times.
Their live performance of 'Down Boy' on Letterman years ago is a really good performance.
I have their live at the Filmore SF DVD and this is a standout somg amongst many others
Omg!!! I love this fucken song and band!!!! Chow chow chow chow chow chow!!!!!
Love YYYs, Love Karen O,
& my heart & soul will always dance to the
I N D I E genre 💚Shoegazer Dreampop💚
New album this month & will be on tour soon! Saw them 4 times live so far, totally recommend seeing KAREN O up there, doing her thing
Yes! Yes! Yesssss!!
You guys need to watch live footage of the band. Karen O is wild and endearing at the same time. Yeah Yeah Yeahs definitely have punk influences, but they have "dancey" type songs, too.
A song I think you guys would read enjoy is Heavy by Collective Soul. Nasty guitar riffs and drums
Smashing pumpkins- Hummer
This whole album is really good. I personally hadn't heard anything like it at the time and then backtracked to Sonic Youth and Swans and stuff like that which influenced them.
You're not wrong to "feel" punk. You can never get through the punk gatekeepers, but a lot of non-punk bands have a punk sensibility, and "yeah yeah yeahs" are definitely in that category.
Gotta do Maps by them if you haven’t already! It’s a different vibe but one of their big ones
This whole album is fuego
This album is one of my favorites of the last 30 years
Man this whole album is so good
I think this song is amazing. The guitar is fire, the orgasmic vocals are fire, the drums are fire.. this is 1:00 am on Friday night. This song is sex.
Indie Rock: Throwing Muses, Magnapop, JawBox, Tracy Bonham, The Sounds, and 90’s alternative Veruca Salt!
Don't forget Ruby, Lea Andreone, and Poe.
@@BuccWylde poe- angry johhhhny, oh and concrete blonde, boss hog, whale-hobo humpin slobo babe! PJ Harvey
I recommend In Evil Hour - 2050. Great punk band with an amazing female singer. From Yorkshire I believe. 👌
