- A hands on first look at Panasonic's newly released FZ80D Superzoom camera. Many photo and video examples plus feature review, comparison to the prior model, tips suggestions, and bridge camera news and more!
Important point to note not mentioned in the video: It appears the FZ80D has stripped Wifi from this camera so if you need the WIFI feature, you will have to look elsewhere!
Should you decide to buy the camera, using the link below helps my channel a bit by giving me a small commission, yet doesn't cost you anything. Thank you for your support.

I like my FZ300 because it is fully weather sealed.
Also bright f2.8 throughout the 28-600mm range.

Kudos to Panasonic for keeping the category alive. Will be interesting to see if Nikon keeps at least one superzoom bridge camera alive before the end of the year (and the Euro Union USB-C deadline). And of course the Sony RX10IV...
I had the fz80. Loved it except for one thing: no weather seal. I used it for nature stuff and in the end it died due to dust invasion. wish the new fz80d had been weather sealed. i am now using sony rx10 iv.
This video was dope and fun. Thank you🖤
Thanks !!
Please don't forget the FZ-1000 II, I still use it and I love it's 1" sensor among anything else it offers
Hi there, thanks for that. Yes i did look at and review the FZ2500 which is very similar as you know in a comparison to the RX10IV. I may one day get to the FZ1000ii if they don't discontinue it lol
I have an FZ40 that is a lot of fun. Maybe I’ll upgrade to an FZ60 or FZ200 at some point. Idk about the FZ80 or FZ300. I really like the smaller size of the older FZ cameras.
Fantastic video! I dont have any camera currently and looking for a Bridge. I'm thinking to buy this for now(surprisingly fair priced in EU), but hoping for an FZ300 refresh. Originally i was looking for an used FZ300, but even if i found one, it's in the same price range as a new FZ80D. Insane.
Thanks for the compliment! I agree on the FZ300, No word yet on an update to that model but we can only hope!
The FZ80 scores for higher resolution and double the zoom, in-camera focus stacking for macro, and the zoom assist. The FZ300 scores for the bright F2.8 throughout the zoom range, manual focus lever, manual focus assist, eye detect sensor, fully articulating screen, more custom control buttons, and the better build quality and weather-sealing.
So from a wildlife/birding perspective, and for the in-camera focus stacking for macro, the FZ80 has the upper hand. For almost anything else, with zoom up to 600 mm equivalent, the FZ300 wins in my view.
Superb review. Really looking from a potential buyer point of view. Much appreciated.
Thank you !!
Their Monochrome mode is great!
Take more B&W shots when light sources are limited then.
😅
Great video! I have 2 Pentax bridge cameras, recently picked them up, both in mint condition for not even the price of one, the X-5 and the X-G1. Never used bridge cameras before, but have come to appreciated them a bit more. Are they perfect cameras? NO, but they are great grab and go cameras. My favorite is the X-5 it has a tilt back screen and a EVF, makes shooting a lot easier. Thanks for sharing!
Hey there. Wow, I never heard of those Pentax cameras. Now I'm going to have to research them. Thanks for the comment!
Would love to see you go birding with it at The Ramble. Interested to see how it will perform photographing birds in the dense tree canopies.
Not a bad idea ! I may do that Thanks for the suggestion
Great fair review! Thank goodness that the EVF is much improved because the screen visibility in sunny conditions appears to be worse than an iPhone 7 or just about any current Samsung mid range phone. I think the camera is more a marketing experiment to see how many people still want a superzoom vs a phone with only 2x or 3x zoom. To be honest the camera seems like a successful car model that is given a last facelift with a few new features like different shaped headlights & fancier wheel trims.😂
I like that analogy! yes it may be a kind of experiment to see how it sells. Let's see if Panasonic updates the FZ300. That will be interesting to see.
Sony should bring the RX10 V - I bought a used IV a couple of months ago - just had it on my side during my 4 week cycling tour (2000 km) - next to the IV I had my OM1 with me (with the 300F4 and the 1.4 TC). I used the RX10 IV 90% of the time. It was great for photographing and filming dozens of Bee Eaters remotely (on a tripod - controlled it with my iPhone from a distance). I took possibly around 15.000 pictures with it and hours of video during those 4 weeks. Hard to tell the difference between the OM1 pictures and the RX10 ones. It is a real powerhouse in a handy package, great for quality imaging on holidays. I would like to see better stabilization in a mark V and possibly better noise reduction (maybe AI-noise-reduction in camera? - come on Sony you can do it).
I hope Sony does do it...We are all getting tired waiting!
I also waiting for RX10V for thousand year.... or FZ1000iii with new censor, new tech auto focus, longer zoom range ...
Great video, some nice examples for the quality the camera can produce, one feature that would put me off this camera is the lack of WiFi to transfer images to mobile unlike the original camera, unless I'm mistaken 🤔
Hilarious "too much time on your hands" - I hear you brother and send regards from Germany again. I know that "problem". But the new technology is so enticing :)
Hello my friend from Germany. Was in Berlin some years ago. great fun town!--Haha yes, too much time has its plusses and minuses. Thanks for saying hello!
@@techtoremember8096 glad that you enjoyed Berlin. Nowadys, with many social problems, incl. drug dealers in public parks etc, your superzooms are more important than ever to see things safely from a distance:) in fact, I thus recorded some drug dealers with my FZ2000 for a film project. Btw, I plant to see NY sometime in the near future, only Spain and Italy are so nearby and so much fun to visit!
Just gonna watch for the zoom madness, but can't afford it myself. 🙂
I can see why they eliminated the EVF sensor and perhaps this is due to the fact the Touch LCD has NO cover. Your schnoz/nose will touch the LCD and change the AF area missing the shot. I preferred the Eye Sensor being Manual in this case with this device.
This camera has some super dope features for the kind of camera it really is. All the settings on this device are on my current rig the FZ1000II. The one thing this camera could do is a High Res Mode like that of the G9 series and stack 4 18MP photos on top of one another and get a super High Res photo.
Hey! I really like your videos. They are very well made with plenty of details, and 99% always answer a question I am thinking of. Just a thought, would you be willing to make a tripod video comparison? If not, I understand as you like to focus on the cameras themselves. I really like your style, so I figured I'd throw that out there. Anyways thanks for the hard work and great content!
Hi there. I really appreciate the compliment! Thanks so much I wish I had the time to do a tripod comparison because I do get asked about that quite often. To be honest, most of the time I am hand holding the camera but I know many people use a tripod so I really am not the expert in that area. There are so many different models depending on your budget. I can tell you Manfrotto (they used to be called Bogen) are known to make a high quality tripod and when I was in the video business most professionals used that brand. They have many different models for most any budget! Thanks again!
@@techtoremember8096 Thank you for the response I really appreciate it and also the tip. I just bought a brand new p1000 I don't know how I managed to find one but I did and so I am looking for a solid tripod. Again thanks!
Luckily, I got the FZ80 for 297 from Walmart/Adorama right before it was discontinued …and the FZ300 from Adorama , Open Box , for 350 odd, in January 24 . Price climbed since it was discontinued this year .Great buys …I reach for the FZ300 when I want to take a photo, but it’s nice to have a 60x zoom available. Strictly amateur .
Well, this camera nicely summarizes what's going on in the world, in so many different industries. No innovation, no risks taken, just selling the same old sh.t again for a higher price.
Yep! Similar to Apple bringing out the iPhone SE 2022 version.
I have a FZ72 and a FZ80, it would have been nice if the next in line would have a tilt screen.
Yes its too bad they didn't add that ---at least they did make some other improvements.
The EVF on the predecessor of this device was rubbish and the upgraded 2.36M dot, current on the FZ1000II, was a smart move.
Keeping the camera around $500 is good too and most people out there just want something to see wildlife far away and with this camera that is now achievable.
The Recompose button is super handy, the rolling shutter is pretty bad but expected at those distances. Panasonic should have dropped the focal to 50x with some more stabilization and a continuous F2.8, like the FZ300, would have been dope too. It looks like this device will be in addition to the Smartphones for reach but that's it. My phone took better photos than my previous FZ80 and the reach was handy but the battery drains fast in video.
It can be a very good video camera with its motorized long reach, good stabilization, and fast enough focussing. But the FZ300 is even better with a F2.8 aperture across the entire zoom range, flippy screen, and weather sealed . Too bad it is not going to be around anymore.
You're cool man. You do nice good clips man! Great work!
And I'm a really cynical asshole... (As in... I hate pretty much everyone and everything... Stanley Hudson (the office) 😤 style)
This should really tell you something!
Keep it up man!
That's one of the best comments ever! Haha Thanks so much.. I love Stanley Hudson ...great character. lol Thanks so much for the comment and cracking me up!
Very surprised that you did not say anything about my message! It is OK, many greetings to you.!
Sorry I must have missed it !! What was your message ?
Was hoping they would update the FZ300, oh well.
Still could !
I currently have the Nikon P950 which has a fantastic zoom but is so heavy to carry around so this might be just the thing to replace it with.
Yes this is way way smaller !
SO the RX10iv is coming to an end, and likely we will never see a 5, and the FZ300 as well. And again there will be no FZ400. How long before all superzooms are gone. I hope my 2017 Nikon B700 holds on for years to come, because it looks like trying to replace it is just getting tougher and tougher.
😲no Wi-Fi! Deal
breaker!🖐
Sony's rumor about being discontinued MIGHT be the sign that they're trying to get rid of the IV stock before launching the V or an IVb for the USB-C law
I like your content.
Thank you !
Nice video
Thanks !
The only downside is that the screen is not flipable , i home they release a refresh of the fz1000
Lets hope!
Pretty much this is a mobile spotting scope to post videos of subjects far away in 4K and for peeping Tom's lol😂😂
or private detectives!
Is the video and picture quality much much more more better than the old one? How about in low light?
It’s the same picture quality -same sensor
Nice video! Why is 60fps not possible with this type of camera in 4K?
To keep costs down, Panasonic limits it to 4k/30 You’d have to go to a more expensive bigger camera if you wanted 4k/60
@@techtoremember8096Perhaps it is not so easy to implement technically in such a camera. Action cameras, for example, already have 4K 60fps.
Yes for action cameras many people want to be able to slow down their footage in slow motion so 60fps is a benefit for that and for very rapid motion, 60fps will look better than 30. It certainly is technically possible to do it in a camera the size of the FZ80D, however I do think they want to make this camera as entry level and keep the cost down so adding that 60fps would require a faster processor, engine etc.
A quick question. I'm just about to buy a bridge camera. The choice is between Canon Powershot sx70 hs, Nikon Coolpix p950 or Panasonic Lumix DC-FZ80D. Which of these would you choose? Love your videos btw.
Hey, thanks for the compliment...Good question, I have reviewed them all ...but I think the Nikon is the best bet even though its the biggest and most expensive. It has the best image, best stabilization best viewfinder and screen. It also has the longest zoom of the 3 of them too. There are rumors that Nikon may be updating this line. I don't have any confirmation yet but there are some serious rumors at least about the P1000, so if they refresh the P1000, they could also do the same with the P950 possibly. But its speculation right now. I plan on releasing something about this as soon as I know.!
@@techtoremember8096 The Nikon is going to be my choice.Thank you very much for your answer. Have a lovely day.
@@techtoremember8096 If weight of the camera is a factor would Nikon still be your first choice.
Well, if I was going to lug the Nikon around all day lets say on a vacation, I dont think I would choose it. It is heavy for an all day carry type situation. So the other 2 cameras you mentioned I would choose the Canon SX70, I like the tilting screen which is pretty important!
My beloved FZ150 has just died. I'm looking for a replacement. The FZ80 was top on my list until I saw it has a fixed lcd. Show stopper. I can't find any that is as good as my FZ150 was. Any ideas?
Yes the fixed screen is a drag for sure. I would have recommended the FZ300 but that was just discontinued. If you can find one I love that camera. The RX10IV is a great camera, but now you're in a much more expensive price arena.
@@techtoremember8096 Thanks, the RX10iv is really heavy also.
Wait... did they seriously make a camera with a fixed screen and no eye-sensor? Somebody was saving money to achieve that crazy zoom...
They sure were !!
What about differences between the old model and new one in terms of image quality?
they are exactly the same with the same sensor. They only made a few changes to the new model--added the zoom assist, upgraded the viewfinder and rear screen and added USB-C charging.
@@techtoremember8096 So, the newer Venus engine (image processor) has not made any perceptible improvements? Or, does it have a newer Venus engine?
My understanding is that the fz80D does not have a newer engine of any kind over the original fz80 Just the changes to the displays, charging port, and zoom assist So you will get the exact same picture quality - unfortunately
@@techtoremember8096 Ok, thanks.
Wi-fi control?
No Panasonic dropped that feature
What's the news about the superzoom cameras?
Sony RX10IV rumor to be discontinued and Panasonic FZ300 IS discontinued.
Does the FZ80D have same firmware as FZ80? If not, can I use the FZ80D firmware in FZ80?
Hi, I would never recommend using firmware from a different camera. It could damage the camera. They are similar cameras but not the same.
I prefer no eye sensor as so many times it goes to the other option when you dont want it to
That’s true but most cameras that have sensors give you a choice to turn it on or off too
How does this compare to the Canon SX70HS?
similar in the zoom ratio... Canon has tiltable rear screen which is a big bonus . for me thats very important
This model vs fz2000 nowadays?
The FZ2000 or 2500 is a way more sophisticated camera. It actually has a 1" sensor so you'll get better results with it especially in lower light situations. Its twice the price though and is significantly bigger. Also the zoom on the FZ80D is much longer at 1200mm vs. 480 on the FZ2000.
Hey man, I just got the fz80D but I can’t seem to find the Wi-Fi mode. Do u know where I can find it or how u transferred ur photos and videos?
Hi it seems like they literally did NOT include wifi - really crazy -you’ll have to use the photos on the SD card to transfer
No Wi-Fi back to era 2000
For some weird reason they ditched Wifi from the FZ80D model (maybe D stands for “dumb move”?). They also ditched the Panorama button and screen mode, which is a real shame - I used to use that when visiting new places to get an overall feel for the place. It’s stilla good camera, just not as good as it used to be
I like that “dumb” can I use that quote ? Haha Yes it’s a stripped down camera A shame
Did you find the wifi connectivity with this camera?
Unfortunately it doesn’t look like it has it - for some odd reason they dropped it
It's still disappointing they couldn't even squeeze a slightly bigger sensor in, such as a 1/1.7, in 2024. And what happened to the news you were going to give us at the end???
I gave the rumors at the beginning of the video about the Rx10 and Fz 300- yes I know , it’s disappointing that the image quality hasn’t changed
Does it have wifi ?
No they dropped it
the question is : fz300 or fz80d , I'm really having a difficulty time deciding , any other candidates in the same budget i'm open for suggestions as long as it has decent zoom 60x or 50x
The FZ300 is a different beast altogether. The zoom is half as much but the aperture is constant at 2.8 which many people prefer. I do think the FZ300 yields somewhat better images than the FZ80 but if you really really need to go to 1200mm then the FZ80 is your camera.
I don’t know how come Panasonic people do this to the great FZ300 😡😡😡
Nikon canceled the P1000 because it proves the earth is flat.. love your videos
They are planning to release the P1000 II. Already registered.
@LetsDiscoverMauritius do you have any source where this is confirmed ?
@@techtoremember8096 On Nikon Rumors website. They even gave the registered serial number.
I see that ! Thanks so much
Man, what a shame. Ive owned a handful of FZ cameras and was hoping for a nice update. The video looks no better than any of the older FZ cameras in this price range. You have no stabilization in 4K video mode, thats why it looks so terrible. The wobbling jello is present even at shorter focal lengths which makes this unusable for anything really. I wouldn't even bother shooting home movies with it, my iPhone will get much better photo and video than this. There is no reason to have that much wobble on a tiny little sensor. I would just pay the extra for the FZ1000 or even the 2500. At least the video from those is a bit better and more stable.
You are right. They did nothing to improve the image quality or the wobbling from the stabilization. Still, if you are using it take photos, naturally you won't see the wobble. And yes, the video from those other 2 cameras are better but some people want the extreme reach of the 1200mm that only the FZ80 gives you.
This camera good for concert from tribune?
@@Channel-xx8qt no. The sensor is too small for low light like a concert.
Small size sensor camera. What size is this small sensor?
LUMIX did this to the GX85/9 bodies. Why a microphone jac?
Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
Sensor is 1/2.3”
It would be nice to get some specifications like size and weight quickly - I reject 95% of cameras on weight grounds. I still use and love an old Canon G5-X because of the F1.8 zoom lens and strong permanent EVF with eye-sensor and 350 gram weight
