  • A behind-the-scenes view of what it's like as an artist working on a solo exhibition. I created 8 new watercolour paintings for my first ever solo, "Flood" at Haven Gallery. The exhibition has already opened, so you can check out the body of work over on my website. #brbchasingdreams

EPISODE TWO!! The show has opened already, but I still want to share with you guys the behind-the-scenes of it all. It was a huge chapter in my life, being both a highlight and also one of the most intense periods. It's taken a while to edit all the footage since coming back home from the US, but I finally figured a direction for these studio/vlog style videos and I hope you guys enjoy it. I'm already working on episode 3, which will come out next week :)

Your art and the detail of your painting are breathtaking.. I also love the way you put your shading in your watercolor piece, I get with what you said about water color aesthetic and how if you want to have so many control why not just use alcrylic or copic.. but I think water color controled shade have different vibe with other media, and have their own charm.. in my personal preference loose watercolor thecnique are kinda mainstream lol so its okay if you have your own style in doing watercolor and not using watercolor aesthetic.. your painting are still amazing either way, thank you for sharing the video

Completly agree with this comment. The fact that you use watercolor this way makes your art unique! You get textures and vibes that i havent seen before. If i had to give it an explanation, i would say that its the flowness or softness of watercolour mixed with your controlled style that makes your works a calm and safe place to look at.

At 4:21 I was at the edge of my seat there saying "yeah! please please please! don't rip the paper, be smooth...." /holds breath...and phew, yay! Well done, beautiful. At 8:06 I just had faith it would be ok. I know it's easier to blend with oil, but this is just gorgeous work with the skin shading and I appreciate seeing it done with watercolor. Entertaining vlog, wishing you the best with your show.

I guess every artist must feel differently about watercolours, as I'm someone who has always used coloured pencils and oil paints asI' able to get that precision and control, i always stayed away from watercolours, until recently, where i wished to challenge myself to get that control with watercolours to produce a piece like all my outcomes and after a few goes i think i mastered it pretty well :)
that being said, i LOVE your more recent outcomes, they're just so stunning!!

When I remove rubber fluid ….. I have previously pour some of that liquid in a small bowl and let it dry. When dry I roll it some so I can handle it and use it to lift it off the paper. I don’t like the rubber block that is sold to do that. I believe that my method results in a softer removal.

Stunning work! How does one manage to get a solo exposition? I know more of the 'online' part - just curious how that part of the art industry work (plus, had now idea those are still a thing nowadays - what a lovely surprise!). Congrats on that, it's no small feat! Regarding the point you made about being more and more controlled and 'what the point of watercolor' as opposed to other medium - well, I guess it's more a matter of what drew you to watercolor over other mediums in the first place. For many it's - as you say - that watercolor 'effect' and 'feel', the flow, looseness and 'happy accidents' and if that's what you love about it, by all means, go back to that. For me it was always the softness, how the colors just blended seamlessly into one another, smoothly and softly, but are still vibrant and just glow. I just always disliked the hard edges and an overworked appearance. haven't seen another medium manage to do that, especially not acrylics or oils - the just don't have that softness or glow and transparency. I think pastels are the closest, but they too are not easy to use (definitely for details), and the dust and messiness aren't something I'm fond of. Their blending ability and softness are unparalleled, but the have more of matt feel to them in general, and to get the piece to glow is not an easy task (plus, how fun is it to watch watercolor go wet in wet?!) Bottom line, I personally don't see anything wrong with developing your skills and experimenting with other styles and new directions especially if you enjoy it and like the results you're getting. If don't - that's something else altogether. But I personally, don't think you should limit ourselves, or change the way we do things, just because we think that that's how it's supposed to be done. I love how experience helps us discover new ways of doing things, and we should celebrate that. We should go with flow (pun intended Haha!) and just let our talent lead they way - and you're way is gorgeous so far!! But that's just my two cents, hope you don't mind me chiming it with them 😊 Oh! and by the way - What white did you use for highlights? Ink? Gouache?

There is nothing wrong with using controlled techniques with watercolor - or any technique on any medium. Just look at Stephen Scott Young, Paul McCormack and Mary Whyte - all watercolorists who employ very realistic and tight painting techniques. It is all about the vision you have, laying it down on paper and getting it across to the audience. Cheers!

Trying to figure out why but I just can't so: Why are you using an oblique nib holder for linework?

i've been painting with the lukas watercolours for a while now (12 colors), that used to be my mom's. Now, I'm thinking about buying the koh i noor set with 24 colors. Any advice on that?

Hey! Are you going to make any of these available as prints? I just tried to buy the 'Inner Stream' one from the Haven Gallery website but unfortunately they are sold out :( I'm so bummed that I missed out! It would be amazing if you made it available again!
Please consider, thank you so much and can't see what else you create in the future! :) Congrats on your solo exhibition!

Do you not have a dryer? I’m sure you do. I’m so impatient I would be able to wait 😅 I actually just a nail heater from jamberry (you can see it in some of my videos.) it's a heater so it dries more than pushes around. Plus it's small and compact, in case any one is looking for something.

With the controlling the art aspect, like you said with feeling like you lose the purpose, maybe try gouache! It’s a much better medium to feel the need to control! I love gouache and I feel like maybe you would too💝
