Considering the racism in online fandoms over the past decade+, it's not surprising either. I mean, we all love the same shows, creators & characters. I've always wanted to properly cosplay and not only is there like one black character on my cosplay list cause there are barely any to begin with, but seeing black cosplayers incorporate black hairstyles into their versions of characters makes me wanna do it to cause they look so cool with them. Now though I'm gonna have this doubt in the back of my mind when I should be feeling at my most confident that there's gonna be that one person who's gonna try and ruin it for me (or if I try post a TikTok in cosplay and risk being called a literal monkey if it gets enough traction/reaches the wrong crowd). Racism and anti-blackness is global so finding it at conventions where white nerds are the majority is no shock to me but that doesn’t make it any less disappointing to see. And there was this one black gal who was Belle from Beauty and the beast. She had the most amazing, accurate dress that she had put almost a hundred hours into sewing herself and she had even relaxed her hair for the first time so she could do the same hairstyle. It was so glamorous and she looked beautiful. And the dude doing the interview complimented her and she said, “Thank you! You are the first person to tell me that. Everyone else just says I’m too dark to be Belle or that I should’ve done Tiana, but I identify more with Belle since she’s a nerd too.” It’s been 8 years since I saw that, but it basically took all the excitement from wanting to cosplay away.
