Stacey, please don’t be sorry for sharing your emotions. Too many would rather walk by, ignore, or pretend everything is okay. Being willing to share this and be vulnerable with an emotion that so many of us share is welcomed, loved, and appreciated. Our government is failing the veterans, and the public in general is as well. It’s gutting and heartbreaking. Thank you. ❤

Being veteran, and I have heard this same comment from many other vets, and that is, when someone thanks us for or service, for a long time it was awkward and I didn't quite know what to say. Thanks just felt wrong. It took me a while before I came up with a honest reply and I would say to them, "IT WAS MY HONOR:. I feel it really was, but recently UI heard a newer and better reply, which is, "YOU WERE WORTH IT." Best line ever!

@TheDirge69 I don't agree. When our government spends over a trillion dollars per year on defense, they have the ability to wipe out this problem. But many of our politicians would rather play political games and they don't care who gets hurt in the process. Just look at how long it took for the burn pit victims just to get medical treatment. And even when it finally passed, some of the politicians had to be shamed into passing the bill.

My wife played mom and dad more times than I care to think about. Having people at home that are willing to do what is needed is something that doesn’t get enough credit. @@JacobMoore-tk7wt Thank you for your service, brother. My medical history was well documented while in service. I was also told that I was too broken to re-up but not broken enough to kick out on a medical discharge. I could not even go in to the reserves. There was an incident in boot camp that fractured my ankles. I was dropped from training and put in to MRP for a month and then PCP. So, I got to spend an extra month and a half in boot camp. I was also sent in to the gas chamber 6 times in one day and the last two times without my gas mask. That tore up my sinus which I had to have surgery on a couple of years later but while I was still in service. There was another incident where I fell about 15 feet flat on my back and which I had to be extracted. Now I have my spine fused in two places. There are a couple of other things that I have but this is long enough. No pitty party, though I would not pay $0.25 to do it all over again but I would not take a millions dollars for the experiences.

Born in 1977, joined in 2001, served overseas 2007-2011, working desk duty since, busted ankle, knee, shoulder, back messed up at lower back, between shoulder blades and upper neck, yet I´m one of the lucky ones, got home, have a job and just medicate myself with alcohol, coffee and cigarettes, mind is messed up and sleep is nightmarishly limited to 2--3 hrs at a time yet must be achieved to keep the voices away, hence the copious amounts of alcohol to fall asleep. I served 1997-2003.
But I can't even be near alcohol. Have to avoid it entirely (even avoiding restaurants where it is served). I have zero control when it's there. Some deep seeded need to eliminate as much brain activity as possible or something.
Haven't managed to kick the cigs or coffee, though. I find sleeping more than a couple of hours at a time to be nearly impossible as well, but instead of alcohol to block out enough to get at least a bit of rest, I have now gone the thc route. Seems to numb me up better with far fewer consequences and no risk of repeat alcohol poisoning.

I know this song very well as I'm a fan of the band, but your reaction brought me to tears because we both come from Military families. I resent the way our veterans are treated and have been treated for way longer than this video depicts. It makes you realize what's important to the elites and what isn't. This had been going on way before Vietnam ever started and only got worse. That lyric tells the story and a lot more....So when we have discussions about pride for our country....veterans that have seen hell first hand, and don't know how to forget it....need to be put first in line for help when they get home. Not people crossing the border with a hand out saying my country won't afford me a free living...

This song never fails to hit home and the music does a fantastic job of grabbing your heart. Ivan Moody is an excellent and powerful singer indeed. I love the way he can quite literally sing a roar that expresses pain, anger and anguish. What I always take from this song is the reality that our soldiers are citizens who feel a calling to serve their country only for our greedy politicians to misuse that calling to duty. Our soldiers believe they are meant to protect their home country, but are sent into unjust conflicts. They are shoved through wars that we don't belong in or should have started, fighting and dying for causes We The People did not vote for. They come home broken in body and spirit or in a box, having lost brothers and seen carnage and inflicted death and pain upon others and in the end they don't feel like heros because there was never a truly justified cause to believe in to begin with. They come home asking themselves "what the hell did we go do all that for?" and the only answer they can find is that our politicians told them to. My dad is a 75yo Vietnam War veteran and he still talks and fights in his sleep, sometimes to the point that I wake him so he can start over in his rest. Our soldiers' duty and sacrifices are abused and misused for the greed of career politicians who have lost touch with the people and the righteousness of their office duties. A bit of a rant here I know, but this song always reminds me that our soldiers come back feeling like they were "on the wrong side of heaven and the righteous side of hell" because we have been going to wars without a passion for a justified cause. Men do terrible things in war and if they cannot feel that they had a cause to believe in to attach the violence to and justify it then it will destroy them internally. A man's conscience is a powerful thing. It will lead him to do amazing things or tear him apart for doing terrible things.

I have a lot of veterans in my family and when I saw this for the first time my son was in the Marine Corps, struggling with some stuff and it was right when all of the events unfolded in Kabul. I lost so much weight from stress and worrying. Hadn't seen him in almost 2yrs at that point but I knew they were being briefed and on stand by for deployment. I cried for months praying I would never have the military show up at my door with horrifying news. Please don't apologize for getting emotional. We can do so much better for our veterans and I love and respect this band for bringing attention to these issues and their long term support of our service men and women. God bless you honey and all of our active and non active duty military. 🙏

Veterans deserve our deepest support and appreciation. They have volunteered to go and serve us and our country so we civilians don’t have to. I come from a family full of veterans from WWII to Vietnam and the Gulf War. I never served myself due to physical injuries sustained as a teenager. But I have family who have had serious struggles dealing with things that they had to do and things they witnessed. Luckily they had our family to support them and carry them through but not all veterans are so lucky. Thank you to all of you who have put your lives on the line for me and my family. Yours and your family’s sacrifices are much appreciated and you are loved more than you know.

i've also got very emotional watching this...
my mother's late husband was a soldier in the Belgian army. And there's a song that will always be engraved in my mom's memory, the one from when he left for ex-Yugoslavia, this song created to say goodbye to them and perhaps forever was Conquest of Paradise by Vangelis. we heard it at my goddaughter's school party and she fell apart at the first note.
All that to say, don't apologize for showing those tears, it happens to everyone, especially with lyrics that are sometimes very hard to take.
    Thank you.

Thank you for celebrating memorial day, most people misunderstand the day. Memorial day is to remember the military members who fought and died in action. they paid the price of freedom and some didn't come home. we remember therm. veterans day is the day to thank a veteran for their service. they put in time in the military and served and came home. some vets have seen some stuff that they carry with them for the rest of their life. armed forces day, is a day to thank the active duty that is serving now.

I appreciate your emotional reflection on the song and the information presented from the video. As a Veteran who served in combat I ask that you reflect on this as well: Every military member; active, retired, disabled, etc. has a different experience and are affected differently. That goes for anyone that takes part in any organization. we all have our own stories. Some have stronger bonds than others. The stronger bonds I had were lost in combat. Therefore, I tend to be a little bitter about what I did and the way Society treats us, I often prefer not to mention my service because there's a severe lack of understanding and genuine appreciation. At the same time it's not the average Americans fault as they have not seen what I've seen, nor had to do what I did, and to be humble many more service members did so much more than myself, my contributions were very little, even in the short time I was overseas. I am grateful for the small pension I receive for my disability as I know so many more fellow veterans unjustly receive far less help than what I have been given. As it goes for so many of us, My wife will never know what I went through, nor will my children. It is difficult to talk about not so much for myself but more for the sake of not wanting them to know the pain and loss. I prefer them to see me as a loving father and husband that is here for them every day rather than a survivor that is lucky to be alive. There is more to me than the 8 years I served. That was only a part of my life, I want you to know the rest of it. I wish everyone the best. Thank you.

I went to war the first time 20 years and 2 months ago. I was sent to Baghdad. Ten days after arriving, I was blown up by a car bomb. I don't regret serving. 25 years after he got out of the military, my best friend, whom I met on an Air Force base in 1978, took his own life. Something was fractured inside him during his time in uniform and the cracks kept extending and wideneing and then ... snap. I had no idea he was in trouble (we had stayed in touch all through the years) and, even as his "brother", I can't avoid thinking I failed him. Myself, I'm being treated for relatively minor (but still real) mental health issues, and it's the best call I've ever made. We drink juice and take aspirin when we catch cold, we go to the ER when we break a bone, but we think mental health troubles only happen to the weak, or that we'll just get better on our own. Every US veteran has access to VA healthcare, including mental health. I used to think it was only for retirees, but anyone who served 4 years and was honorably discharged qualifies for VA care. Thanks, Stacey, for watching the video and not hiding your tears. I've seen the video many times for the last 5-6 years and it breaks me down a little every time. If you are reading this comment and are a veteran and you think you could maybe use just a little help, it's there for you. It's "money on the table" and you earned it.

Hi Stacy. I Want to thank you for reacting to this song and bringing the issues of homeless vets to the masses. Unfortunately, I have recently found myself on the verge of becoming one of these stats that were talked about. I will be discharged from an advanced care facility after having surgery on a foot to save it from infection. I am still unable to walk, yet will be tossed out by the insurance on the 7th of July with no real support structure to help me. Living off grid in the middle of the Arizona desert in the 110+ degree heat is quite challenging enough, but to have to do it without being able to get around easily is going to be beyond a challenge. I am at the end of my rope and I am watching the light at the end of the tunnel fade. I am not wanting to become a statistic, yet feel that before too long, I will. Thank you for listening. It has helped to talk with someone. Even someone I do not even know. Have a great day.

15 year Navy Seabee veteran OIF/OEF, this song hits me hard every time. I've lost more brothers and sisters after we got home then while in theater. The lyrics really speak to veterans, understand that we commit felonies on behalf of the US government. We take lives, we destroy, but we also build and save lives. So yes, we are on the wrong side of Heaven and the righteous side of hell. We came home with promises and cheering crowds, but the moment we need help, we are ignored. Heaven and Hell again, and it's not getting any better. I was facing homelessness, reached out to a so called veteran's group called Mount Carmel, I did everything they asked immediately and they drug their feet to the point they couldn't afford to help me. Long story short, I needed $900 to pay rent, by the end of it all, I was $5k in the hole all because they kept stringing me on. I know that's anecdotal but it's just one example of how we are treated after honorably serving our country with our lives, risking the relationships of our families, and complete uncertainty for an entire deployment. And people wonder why we choose to end it. Now, all that being said, thank you for covering this song and bringing light to this issue.
