I headed out to Sea Otter Classic to take part in their gravel race. Featuring some of the finest champagne gravel I've ever ridden and an unwanted intrusion. Still had a good time - hard not to hear!

Juliet dropping folks on the climbs while filming and chatting along like no big deal! 🙂
I was thinking the same!! Fair play, Juliet! When I get a migraine, I have to curl up in a darkened room!
“I’m going suffer! It’s going to be fun!” We are truly strange people!😂
😂🤷♀️ it’s true
I'm a lucky person, I've only had a migraine attack twice in my life (I'm 68), but it's terrible. It started with light spots in my eyes. After a while I couldn't even read anything decently anymore. Afterwards I felt terribly nauseous and ended up with a terrible headache.
For people who are less fortunate than me and perhaps even experience this on a daily basis, my condolences and respect.
Juliet you are amazing.
Terribly sorry about the migraine, but, on a positive note, wanted to comment that you showed a lot of trail that I haven’t seen from others covering Sea Otter! You showed some really great looking stretches, in addition to shooting skill while riding!
Thanks!
Well done Juliet! I am glad that you were able to ride through the migraine.
At least it was a lovely day.
Well done Juliet!! Amazing what you (Juliet!!) can achieve with a splitting headache. I loved the scenery. Thanks for sharing 😘
You rock for finishing that with a migraine! Props from a fellow sufferer.
I went to Graduate school there in Monterey - these old Fort Ord gravel roads were my home course for 2 years!! Love it!
My migraines start with blurry shimmering vision, then brain pain or no pain......have found drinking water can help......
Another great video, cheers.
'Ull' east yorkshire.....
Yep, thats called a migraine aura.
I nearly skipped riding tonight, but you motivated me to get outside! Cheers Juliet! And screw migraines
That’s awesome ☺️ hope you had a great ride
I'm impressed that you work through your migraine.
I find that if I take an anti-inflammatory right at the start of the symptoms then maybe I won't have to stay curled up in a ball in a darkened room for a day. I might even be able to function as an almost normal human being, but I doubt I could complete a gravel race. Kudos to you for working through the pain. You have my sympathies. I hope the rest of the race went better.
Chapeau for not giving up .
Freshening up.
Thank you for such a cool, fun perspective of the race and event as a whole. Looks so fun!
I used to suffer with migraines so badly, I'd throw up and basically die for hours. Less frequent and less severe now, thankfully. Its that 1st hint of dodgy vision and you think, oh no. Total kudos for pushing through and finishing. 👍🏼👍🏼
Lovely stuff again. Chapeau!
I started geting migraines in my late teens (a VERY long time ago) and they always start with the dreaded 'aura'. I get them less frequently now and they are way less severe than the used to be. Tension/stress is my single biggest trigger but dehydration contibutes too I think. Two pink Migraleve fix it most times...🩷🩷
Looked like a terrific ride.
My wife struggles with migraines every month and it’s just so brutal! It’s so debilitating and there’s nothing I can do to alleviate the pain. Well done for carrying on. 👍
Brilliant how do you film this stuff wow. Impending migraine while passing a hella lot a people LOL. That was a beautiful course; gotta love California. Ok Juliet no self sabotage, keep the mental train on the positive side please. Congrats and lots of love and respect to you.
that's an impressive ride to do without a headache, let alone what you were going through. love the way you are catching people all the way too!!! I hope you recognise how well you did. 🙂
Fair play to you. I only get 1 or 2 a year but can’t do anything when I have a migraine. Much respect.
Sumatriptan for the migraine as soon as the distortion in your vision start. It works for me. Keep a Suatriptan in your repair kit.
good tip
I have only gotten a couple ocular migraines in my life. The last one I got was gravel riding a mile climb on one section that was really steep. I read that exercise and straining can set off the migraine. I never got a really bad headache...just saw the bright flashing blobs ..glad you were able to finish the race.
Great music choices!
I get "wibbles" on my peripheral vision, it's a sign I need to do something - luckily I've only ever had a few migranes in my life and the first I reemember I ended up with bad tunnel vision (maybe 10 yrs old). I think it's dehydration for me, which I'm hopeless at managing, it also causes me cramps far too often for something so easy to manage!!!
Damn, sorry to hear that. I’ve been advised to take some painkillers in my jersey pocket so I can nip it in the bud before it gets bad
Yep I know how you feel, I suffer from migraines and I also get the blur vision first before I get a migraine. My birthday today and guess what I got blurry eyes and a migraine while out riding. Soon as I feel it coming on I take an advil.
Chocolate and cheese set mine off so unfortunately I try staying away from those two delicious things 😢
Damn, that’s a shame. Happy Birthday tho!
Wow, that looked great! Well done ! Migraines are crappy so you did really well to get through that👏💪🚴♀️
great race.
😂 girl you crack me up.. ROCKSTAR!🤣🏆
Great job finishing! Way to power through.
Thanks! Didn’t want to go all that way and then bail
Awesome video! My first race ever, I was so annihilated by the end but it was so much fun. I loved ripping through the mist in the morning. Cheers!
wow cool race well done ☺
Well done 🤙🏼
You scare the hell out of me when you are doing no hands and filming on gravel, I’m shouting put your hands on the bars😂 it must be because I’m 50 now 🤦🏻♂️🤣
Love the way you were singing on the decent, looks like a great route.Sad you got a migrain😫
WoW! Did the start remind you of when you were racing fixie crits in Brookly, NY? Going out fast and hard!
Squiggly vision must have been scary! Glad you finished the race unscathed; proper slog it was!
Take the well deserved rest and look after yourself!
🙂🌝 =]
I know the feeling when your’e getting a migraine when racing. It’s the worst!!!!!
That first race face shot of you in the hurt box was hilarious
… when you said cold, I thought oh no, here we go again, ….AAA!… (Across Andes Agony).
But that start is so silly…. But what isn’t when to comes to the Divided States of Destruction! 🤭 I like how you manage to decent and film with a smile. Props for maintaining that migraine, as a sufferer too, it’s nice you got the upper hand. Now here my question… what’s truly possible with an in shape JE? Because you are capable of swinging a result, I suggest pick an event and let’s see you tackle it at full tilt. Just saying. Thank you for the share and my have we progressed in 12 months. Keep riding!
Great effort after getting a migraine. Love your never quit attitude. Although, I suppose either way you need to get back to the car so you need to keep cycling 🤣
Loved the video well done for not giving up. I noticed when you were getting the migraine that your left eyelid was drooping. Could that be significant?
Cette course a vraiment l'air chouette bien que difficile !
Just wanted to share that the vision problems and seeing floaters - I only had these when pregnant with gestational diabetes and high blood pressure.
Have you had checks for your blood sugars? Also blood pressure checks?
All that dust bet you really missed the mud 😂
I love your enthusiasm for the ride even when you're struggling. Go :) The worst day on a bike is still a pretty good day right? :)
I feel you! I'm a migraine sufferer as well. Hate it when the spots and wavy lines come.
Were you running Raddlers? They looked a little chunky for Riddlers.
Damn, sorry you get them too!
Yeah I was on Raddlers. My whole set up was a little much for this course. Could have done with something narrower and faster rolling
Thanks!
thanks so much!!
Looked a cracking effort despite the migraine coming on, how was your hydration do you think going into the race - long few days i guess and well jetlag never helps with that either! The course looked a really good, fun fast course! What tyre setup where you running out of interest? Safe travel's back!
I didn’t have the ideal prep but that wouldn’t really have been possible, without flying out much earlier in the week (which I couldn’t, as I have a family) and then missing out on some of the fun in California in the run up to the race. These days I’m less focused on results and more on the experience so no biggie.
I had 44c WTB Raddlers. In the end my set up was not quite right for this race. I was going to summarise this at the end but I didn’t get around to it
@@JulietElliottsChannel Yea it's so easy to get tied into results rather than what really matters, it's why i think i do alot more bikepacking these day's to remote locations and wildcamping. I think there will come a time when can't ride and it won't be the events entered that i remember so much as the days in nature and the journey there, that and family and friends. What i don't understand these day's is why a few drinks with friends feel's so much more worse on the saddle the day after, and why do floors feel harder (aka use to sleep on roll mat's, couldnt leave home without my thermorest these days)! The joy's of hitting the 40s lol! Great vlog, safe riding. As for tyres, yea but you know it could have rained, could have been a wetter course, its one of those - its getting crazy now the choices really and as you know its always a trade off between safety, speed, comfort and reliability - that said i think it's also crazy how there is a "gravel" component for everything nowadays (its almost like manufactures think they have reinvented the wheel when in the reality alot of us have been running gravel setup's with drops for years before the word gravel was even spun by marketing)
@@JulietElliottsChannel PS - I meant to say do you ever ride with aero bars? Seen a few of your vlogs now and never see them on your bike say on your Rwanda trip etc. I find even with a perfect bike fit they are invaluable for switching position and easing long/multi day/weeks fatigue when terrain permits. Literally wouldnt ride without them now and mention as see you have your forearms on your bars at one point in this.
Unbound next year then Juliet
You ever been investigated for a PFO, of told you have a heart murmur? I got loads of migraines, especially under exertion. Found out I had a hole in my heart (20% ish of adults have one). Hole closed, no more migraines
Q: Hmm, will Juliet ever learn?
A: Not in the foreseeable future.
Mine are triggered by eating chocolate doh. From a chocoholic
Oh no! Never heard of that!
@JulietElliottsChannel tis true Jules the most horrid migraine after chocolate, I love chocolate but its a NO NO
Hope the migraine is gone. That looked hard with the headaches at the same time. I get instant migraine from a couple of the gel and water additive brands. It’s taken a while to find a set that don’t trigger a headache.
no way, that's interesting. I heard from someone else they get one from chocolate. Aren't bodies/brains weird!
@@JulietElliottsChannel yes allergy stuff is strange. I am using trailwind no -flavour for the water and Torq yogurt gels. Much better than high5 for me which did give a headache and hot flush 🥵
Well done, for pressing on. I get them too. Mine is triggered, by flashing images, like light and shadow. I had to give up mountainbiking because of it, and only do gravelriding that is more in wide open spaces rather than forests. It is bloody awful seeing spots, and I normally vomit. Great going for finishing. Love your videos. Regards from Cape Town, SA
That’s exactly what triggers mine
Wow, don't know how you manage to ride with a migraine, i can barely function when i get one :S hats off
Well I was SUPER anxious when the visuals started as I've had some awful ones in the past where I couldn't do a single thing. Usually if I take an Ibuprofen straight away I can stop it happening but I didn't have any! I was just lucky that it didn't develop into a full-blown episode this time.
Low iron
Sugar bonk ?
Can’t have been, I had carbs in my drink and had been eating
I'm betting on sleep patterns being disrupted. That's what brings mine on. You did travel more than a few time zones.
Where are you
Monterey, California
California
Be glad you ditched your jacket.
