This Is the #1 SONG EVER by an AUSTRALIAN ACT...and IT's NOT WHO YOU THINK! | Professor of Rock

  • Coming up, it’s the most played song by an Australian act and if you took 100 guesses you get it wrong. It’s not a song from Men At Work or AC/DC or INXS, it’s by Little River Band that had many hits in the 70s and 80s on the American charts, but "Reminiscing" was their biggest... It went to #3 and since then it’s been played over 6 million times on American radio and the song was almost thrown away. As the band was recording it, they couldn’t get the arrangement right so they decided to nix it after trying to record it 2 separate times … today’s guest, the writer of the song, talked them into trying it just one more time and someone who wasn’t even in the band is the one who figured out how to make it work… It’s a great story and it’s coming up next on Professor of Rock.

It’s time for another edition of our series Revelations. Where artists and bands take us for a deep dive into their greatest songs and albums. Details about the recordings that you won’t find ANYWHERE else and that’s a fact. Today was have the story of the most-played song in radio history by an Australian artist. I MENTIONED some of the great artists from down under but I left one out. It’s a band that has had a lot of hits here in the States and is definitely the greatest Australian Yacht rock group. I’m talking about Little River Band and the classic 1978 classic hit Reminiscing. We have the co-founder, writer, and guitarist Graham Goble to tell us how he created it.
It was awarded the BMI award for 5 million plays and is now almost at 6 million plays. The song went to #3 on the Hot 100 and was actually named by John Lennon as one of his favorite songs. Graham tells us that the entire song lyrics and music fell out of him in minutes…. he was fantasizing and romanticizing what it would’ve been like to have a relationship with a girl he never got with and having a romance in the 30s when big bands were the rage…the song was created in short order but then almost didn’t get recorded because they couldn’t get the arrangement to work.
Also, Graham tells us that after writing this and many other Little River band Classics he and other original band members like singer Glenn Shorrock and Beeb Birtles haven’t been able to tour under the name because the band who uses the name currently who doesn’t have any original members controls it. How would you like to wake up one morning and see that everything you’d ever worked for and created was controlled by someone else? Get the full story next in our exclusive interview with Graham...
Thanks for watching! Leave us a comment about Graehm Goble and Reminiscing the Little River Band Classic hit. What are your memories? Little River is a small town just west of Melbourne. In the late 70s it was punching way above its weight, because not only did LRB name their band after the town, but a lot of Mad Max was shot around there. Fun fact.

Little River is actually a small creek / river that crosses the main highway that connects Melbourne to Geelong. The Little River rises in the Brisbane Ranges, near Staughton Vale and flows generally east through the Werribee Plain, joined by three minor tributaries, before reaching its mouth at Port Phillip, north of Beacon Point near the boundary between the City of Greater Geelong and the City of Wyndham.
And while there is a small town in the area called Little River ... the band's name is actually taken from an Exit Sign with the words Little River on it. So technically, the band is named after a sign rather than the town or the river itself.

My favorite Little River Band song is "Lady". After my divorce, when I drove down I-5 southwards from Fort Lewis, Washington to my next US Army post across the country, with all my belongings in my little Ford Pinto, "Lady" came on the radio. When the line in the lyrics, "A long time ago I had a lady to love," hit me like a ton of bricks. I had lost my love, and was wondering about what the future would hold for me. That song gave me hope that I would again find a lady to love. And I did! We lasted 35 years until cancer took her away. But she's still in my heart.

It was just after I passed through Tumwater on I-5 southbound. I was listening to KTAC in Tacoma, which was my favorite station at the time. This was back in 1979. KTAC is no longer in Tacoma, of course.

I hope you hold out hope, one day, for a joyous reunion (and more dances to Little River Band and "Reminiscing") in a realm to come. It may seem as though that day cannot come soon enough, and perhaps even that it will *never* come, but, come it will. I invite you to hold onto that hope.

"Reminiscing", along with so many other Little River Band gems, was a part of my youth. I enjoyed hearing it both on the radio and playing it on our stereo; we had an LRB his album on cassette. )My mother occasionally makes fun of me for how I mistook the name for "little rubber band".)
The part about how all of the founding LRB members have been shut out of their own name by the present lineup is at the forefront of my head. That was (more or less) the lineup I saw on tour with Chicago in 2000. The part about how their bass guitarist was covering all of Glenn's vocals did little to offset the politics of the band. That's about to become an even bigger issue for me; another UA-camr named Michael Noland recently shared that Chicago is about to go completely AI. Dating from the mid-2000s, there have only been three founding Chicago members in the lineup, pianist Robert Lamm, trumpet and flugelhorn player Lee Loughnane and trombone player James Pankow. Supposedly, even they are going to retire and leave Chicago performances up to AI. That's just as bad as the original Little River Band members being disallowed from using their own name or participating in the current lineup.

Thanks for the great interview with Graham Goble. Being an Aussie and in my 20’s during the 70’s listened to LRB a lot of course bought many of their records. Reminiscing came quite late in career but it truly is one of their best an worthy of every accolade it gets.
Glenn Shorrock is one of the most amazing and respected voices to come out of Australia during the 70’s. He was also big in the ‘60’s being in local bands like The Twilights so by the time LRB came along he was very much a seasoned performer. Graham and the rest of the band are just so talented.
I just wish we could still hear them today as I’m sure Graham would be still churning out songs from that great song writing ability he has.

Oh yeah, this was the first song that got me into LRB as a kid, because the chords changes (from the slow keyboard intro to the fast-pace song) I looped the beginning intro and made up this little song and recorded my voice over the intro (to keep the rhythm the same) and called it “Mamma Dears” ha ha. I Love the story behind this song and have heard previous interviews of Goble talk about it (and actually documented it in one of my chart shows I do at home) it’s a nice feel-good positive song. Had no idea it’s the most played song in American Radio, never hear their songs on radio over here in Canada. I'm glad your embracing the term "Yacht Rock" as they're a lot of people out there that really hate the term (and even one person now calling it Quality Rock) I don't care, I enjoy the term cause good music comes out of it

I remember watching Tom Hatten's "Family Film Festival" on KTLA in Los Angeles every Saturday afternoon featuring movies from the 30's and 40's. This was in the late 70's before cable. As Tom reached over to the projector and turned it on, the intro for "Reminiscing" would start. I have always loved that beautiful intro.

“Dancing in the Dark” is the track I hear in my head when “The Factory Dance” scene comes up in, “Footloose”.

I always saw one of the lines was we were “hand-in-hand in Miller.” Which made me think as an 11-year-old that they were drinking beer.

Great memory. We were lucky enough to see LRB and Boz, at MacMahn Stadium. The simpler times.

Love Little River Band. So many great memories. A real Aussie icon.
I really enjoyed the interview. Thank you. I found Graeham Goble's humility and restraint very refreshing. There are more than a few artists out there who should take note of what professionalism looks like.

As a kid growing up in the 70's, I loved this band. My parents were huge big band fans, along with Sinatra, Martin, Porter, and many others. To them, the words and melodies meant something that gave the songs life. So of course, I was a big band fan also. I also was into hard rock, then punk and alternative music in the 80's. Now I enjoy all music from classical to thrash, country to r&B and hip hop.
What I want to ask is why you've never done an episode on another Aussie band that was huge in the 70's and 80's? Air Supply?
