- Can destiny be changed? Today I share a traditional Irish tale that says YES - but only when we tell the story in a new way. We are all storytellers, narrating our lives and histories, and we have an amazing opportunity to shape them in joyful, empowering, loving ways.
My questions for you this week:
1. What is an old story you would like to change?
2. What would become possible if you changed it?
Thank you in advance for what you share. I honestly think we have the wisest, most loving community on the internet. I'm truly grateful for you!

The stories you tell us are so beautiful. And yeah, these stories serve us to think and rethink our history of life, encouraging us to deal better with our lives. Kate, thanks always for telling us these very special and magical tales.
I love the compassionate ending of the old man and the scholar!❤. The wheel changed everything! The destiny was reversed. Divine intervention was predestined.😊. I loved this story. The possibilities are infinite. Thank you for joy when you speak.🎉
Dear Avanlee, thank you for your kindness and wisdom. You understand so well!
I love the idea of re-writing stories for a happier ending.
I'm so glad!
What came to my mind was, what goes around, comes around❤
Good one - yes!
😊
You have such a gentle voice I love listening to you tell stories. Thank you so much for giving us your kindness
Your words touch my heart. Thank you so much! ❤
Grace, Kate's voice is so sweet and kind! I also love listening to her! I could/ can hear these magical tales told by her. Indeed, Kate is really talented!
You made me smile and remember. When I was a little girl, I would change the ending of many traditional stories so that witches would repent and be forgiven, wolves would be saved and loved and everyone lived happily ever after. "No, no!" I would tell my mother, "This is the story." Thank you Kate, for your lovely channel. And as a former academic myself, I am amazed that you have survived with your soul intact.
Oh, that's so lovely: "This is the story." You've held that magic wand for years! Those redeemed witches and beloved wolves point to a world we can create today if we choose. Thank you so much for your kind words and for using your magic to tell stories where everyone wins. ❤
Oh, I love this, for all the reasons you mentioned. When I think of an old story I'd like to change, I consider my childhood. It was challenging and difficult, and for a very long time I carried THAT telling with me, and it gave me a weight to carry that was too much. I have been re-crafting my story, focusing on the strength, resilience, and sweetness that have been my lifelong companions. Is it a re-telling or a transfiguration? Or maybe a transformation? I love being able to make a happy ending.
love your stories and the kitties
Thank you so much!
Thank you Kate, beautiful story. Reminds me of my father’s stories beside the open hearth fire in rural Ireland in the late 50s and early 60s before I emigrated to Canada, God Bless.
🇨🇦. Have you read the book by Tom Phelan called, 'We Were Rich and We Didn't Know it' ? Highly recommend to anyone who hasn't read it and who loves Ireland. 🇮🇪 💚
Sean, how marvelous for you to have those memories, and the great treasure of a storytelling father. Thank you for sharing this here and for your blessing. I send mine to you ❤
🍃I am the one who thanks you, Kate.
You have chosen a beautiful story to tell... Perhaps in it, given the twists and turns of life, by choosing kind characters, there is hope, if the person riding the wheel comes across stones on the way... Evil characters scare, cloud the view of the landscape and the perception of what is beneath our feet... If someone falls, someone will have to come to help. The wheel cannot move alone...🌱
Beautifully said: "the wheel cannot move alone." You are so right: we are in this together. Thank you for your wisdom, my friend, and so glad to have you here with us!
Dear Kate..........I love your storys and I can,t hear enough of them-................I was a teacher in a Kindergarden and I ofte create stories for the kids.....................my favorite story is about Reaghan,an old wise owl which lives in an old abbey,Durrow Abbey near Tullamoreand this wise owl have her knowledge from generations of her family...................I create this stories for the kids when I see a problem between the kids and so I could help them.............and I miss my kids now .....................but my stories never dies.................I wrote them down.........
If I could change a story in my life ohhhhhhhhhhh that is not possible.............so,I would say good bye........Blessings and Greetings from Daggy,Kiel,Germany☘☘☘
Dearest Daggy, I am not at all surprised to learn that you are a teacher AND a storyteller. How lucky those kids were to have you to tell them wonderful tales! I'm always glad to "see" you here and I send you many, many blessings, too!
The story surprised me and I like this version much better. 😊 I am part of a story that I am working to change right now by going back to school for my Master's Degree. ❤
WOW, Bridget!!! I'm excited for you and cheering you on. Keep us posted here so we can congratulate you!
👍
Such a simple fix make our world a better place.
Yes. We can do this!
I really enjoyed this... I was expecting someone during the story to be mean and turn the person away, but all were kind and welcoming and that made it even better! I also loved your kitty running down the stairs! Thank you for your lovely, soothing voice and wonderful Irish storytelling!
I'm so glad you liked it. I'm with you - I MUCH prefer stories of kindness and welcome. And thank you for enjoying my sweet and wild little kittens! :)
Thank you for sharing a story about a story! I got the warm fuzzies and find so much value in this idea of retelling with renewed purpose.
I'm so glad. What a wonderful way to describe it - "retelling with renewed purpose." Thank you!
@katechadbournebard 💕💚
I like listening to your stories. Reminds me of when I was young. My mother read me the story of Heidi. One chapter a night. I’m still at 80 years old am so grateful to her. Thanks for your stories ❤
That makes me so happy to hear: thank you! My mother read "The Hobbit" to me and my brother and I remember those evenings as among the happiest of my childhood. We are always hungry for stories and the warmth of sitting together, imagining. You are blessed to have had such a wonderful mother. ❤
I read Heidi too when I was little. The grandfather captured my imagination asa kind man.
💚💚🧚💚💫🧚♀️✨️💃🙏
I was entranced! I love Irish stories as I remember sitting listening to the grown ups talk like that! As I am descended from WB Yeates in reality I used to write poetry but haven't these past years. I was a listener and could listen for hours to many Irish stories and you have brought it all back. I'd love a CD of all of these I really would. Thank you Kate for the wonderful warmth you bring to each video! ✨️💐
Dear Lady Blanche, I am so excited to be in touch with a descendant of WB Yeats! How amazing and thank you for telling me. I'm delighted to think of you as a girl listening to the grownups telling stories; so many storytellers started that way. I am going to take your excellent suggestion to heart about making a recording of these tales. Thank you for your wonderful enthusiasm and encouragement. It truly is a gift to me. ❤
@katechadbournebard It's a pleasure Kate! I just love all things Irish although I live in England my heart is in Ireland. I come from a great lineage and I treasure that! 💐✨️
I listen to you and it changes how I view my day. Thank you.
Well said and I agree
I'm honored by your words and very grateful, Gregory. So glad to have you here with us!
Thank you for telling that wonderful story. Your commentary was so enlightening!
You're very welcome! That story is one of my favorites.
You describe this story as having grace. I love it. May we all experience a state of grace sometimes in our busy lives. And listening to your stories Kate, does just that!
Thank you 💚
You've made my week and given me a gift of grace. Thank you so much!
Thanks to you Kate❤, stories told under goodness light construct structures and paths in our minds that helps us to build the world a better place. And this is poowerfull. Truly creative❤
Yolanda, my friend, I'm so grateful to you for seeing the power in this idea. I know you are already telling stories of kindness and love because you tell them here. Thank you!
I don’t know if you’re a Catholic but I am and I wish all of us were as understanding as you!
You are so kind, Ellen. Thank you!
Today is Imbolc, and I feel I was guided to this story by the light of Brigid; she knew that I have been working my way through an old story with much difficulty, and needed a friend. Thank you for the inspiration. ❤️
I am so honored to be a part of your journey. Every blessing to you and all my thanks for visiting me here!
Lovely to be in touch again! You are my Irish fairy, dying to learn from you,for my roots are in Clane Kildare but Daddy during 2nd W.W. joined the R.A.F and married in Italy and there I have been stuck although every summer we were travelling all around Erin cause we suffered so much being abroad.

What an amazing point! I´m German and we do have very many (Brothers Grimm) Stories that paint a black and white picture. It totally changes the stories and messages when one beginns to change the story. I love that !! Thank you Kate for this wonderful inspiration !
Thank you! Here's to stories that shine with all the colors, all the nuances, all the beauties and shades of truth. ❤
The wheel's tilt went from vertical to horizontal, from up and down to round and round.
That's a brilliant reading. Love it!
I loved this story and I love that it was full of grace. It is a great reminder of stories in our own lives that we can change for the better. You have a great gift. 💚🍀
Thank you so much! I’m delighted that this tale reminded you of the power we have to tell our stories in a more empowering way. ☘️
I love the idea of a happier ending :-)
Me, too. Always!
Thanks. Lovely.
Thank you too!
What a lovely start to this day, to hear this story and your reflections. It calls to mind one of my favorite Carrie Newcomer songs ("Writing A Better Story") which I think I'll listen to again while painting my kitchen and thinking of stories~
Thank you for that - can't wait to listen, too!
Thank you Kate! I like the reminder of charity with graciousness.
So glad it rang for you!
Wonderful & helpful. ❤ Reminds me of my Irish American father who taught me how (& why) to change my dreams. Both reminders that we have agency in our own minds & attitudes. Thank you!
Oh, that's marvelous. What a wonderful dad you have - a wise man. Yes to our agency and remembering to use it to create happier endings. ❤
Mer Cait, I think you’re a mind reader! Yes, I have an old story that needs a rewrite! What an exceptional idea! I was searching for grace just this morning, go raibh maith agat, now I’m closer to finding it. You’re brilliant!
Go raibh maith agat a chara! Your message makes me so happy, and I absolutely love those moments of perfect divine timing. Here's to writing some new stories! ❤
At a time when I and so many are changing our stories and wanting new versions this is welcome and assuring.🙏🏽📚❤
I’m so glad and thank you for telling me ☘️
Dear kate,
Listining to your Storys always gives me warm shivers, it always means it Touches something deep inside of me

And god is never judging
So the kindness of the characters makes this Story so beautiful
Thank so much You dear Kate
I love what you say and agree with you with all my heart! Kindness makes every story beautiful. Thank you, my friend!
Lovely story!! I like a positive ending as well. Needed much more these days!😉
Hello, my friend! So glad you liked it and YES to happy endings ❤
I’ve been rewriting my stories.
That's brilliant, Cindy. Well done!
I _loved_ this story! Stories of kindness, fellowship and "paying it forward" are my favorites. I think this is the way Heaven is, and certainly, this is the way we should treat one another in this world.
Oh, that's my favorite sentence of the day: "I think is the way Heaven is." Thank you for that, and yes - let's make Heaven right here with kindness.
I grew up the oldest of 7 so I had a built in audience for my storytelling. Because I left home at 17, I always felt my story was about becoming a wanderer and choosing adventure over staying close to family. I recently changed that image when I learned from an astrologer that it is my nature to carry my home in my heart. I love exploring and making new friends. I would never have been happy to stay in one place.
That’s so powerful. What a freeing and kind re-imagining of your story! Thank you for your marvelous example!
I love being told a story! Wonderful, thank you Kate. 💚
It's my pleasure, and especially to share stories with people like you! ❤
What a lovely story! And wouldn't it be wonderful if we all could be like that with one another? Making sure everyone has a home, and friends? Thank you, Kate. I have indeed been laboring under an old story, and lately doing my best to unearth all of it, and find out how I can change it. You may have given me a key here--take one aspect...a character, or an idea, or anything else. Thank you! ❤
I am so happy to think this idea might help you loosen up the grip of an old story that doesn’t let you live as freely or joyfully as you can. Thank you for telling me and wishing you lightness and enjoyment in this story shaping. Always glad to see you, robincrow! ❤️
@@katechadbournebard Go raibh maith agat. 🙂
This was wonderful
Thank you! ❤
I had a friend long ago and he told stories over and over but was always making a new point I learned to be patient and listen
Very wise!
Love this perspective! Such a great story❤️♾️❤️ Reasons I love oral tradition & storytelling, the dynamic vibrancy of a tale's evolution.
Yes, rewriting the story!
Thank you so much, Cynthia. It's exciting to see that you truly get it! ☘️
This story seems familiar to me. I love this version. There are a few stories that have haunted me. One is The Little Match Girl - a failure to make a critical leap of development due to having no caring/connected adult around. The other I don't recall much, but it's one of those captive stories (Bluebeard, Rumpelstiltskin, etc.) and the little girl has to empty the ocean by the spoonful into a bucket or/while being condemned to peeling potatoes for the king forever. (I'm probably mixing two tales together, but that's the memory.) Both of these are about helplessness and lack of agency. They've scared me since I was little. Often helpful animals help out with impossible tasks. Maybe a new ending would incorporate something with that. One other tale that really gets me is The Erl King. That is the predicament of growing up whole vs having your soul stolen. Chills.
Chills, indeed. Like you, I was transfixed by "The Little Match Girl" and how dreadfully unfair and unkind it seemed. Now I don't want to tolerate such a story. I want to write a new story in which we - you and me and all of us - NOTICE and HELP. Thank you for your thoughts here which are helpful and spark me, too.
70 y love your story telling.
Thank you so much! ❤️
Listening to you in this and other of your videos inspires me and reminds me of my grandmother, who was a kind and good storyteller (I have passed down her wonderful telling of the story of Epaminondas and His Auntie to my children and, someday, will tell a version to my grandchildren), and other gifted storytellers from my past. Thank you for the gift of your knowledge, wisdom, humor and hope. I love and plan to try this idea of transforming an old, limiting story into a new tale of warmth, friendship and maybe something more lifegiving.
You are carrying on a beautiful tradition, and I'm so glad you are sharing it with your children and grandchildren. The fabulous thing is that story listeners in time often become storytellers - and the world needs more of us. Also delighted to know that you are going to transform one of your own stories into one that you like better. Thank you for telling me and for your very generous words!
Thank you do much I really do enjoy listening to you.
Thank you so much. You are kind to tell me! ❤️
What a sweet and charming human spirit. Love that wink at the end. K
Yay - love wins! The BEST ❤
Love 💕
Thank you for this story, Kate, I love everything you say about it, the many good lessons in it.
I'm reminded of a story from a teen center where I once volunteered. The kids had tough stories in thrir lives. A group of them met regularly, and created new, happy endings to that changed everything. What a wise bunch they were; what hopeful, strong hearts.
"Hopeful, strong hearts" - what a marvelous and truthful way to describe these young ones. That will stay with me. I so appreciate you for encouraging them and me. Thank you, dear Judy!
@katechadbournebard ❤️
❤️
Strange to say, the story has me wondering about the farmer's son, and with great sadness.
...that he would be persuaded by his wife to betray his father in that way. To render the father homeless. When it maybe was the son who had lost his 'home' in himself
...a kaleidoscope of a tale! Thank you Kate.
Well said: "a kaleidoscope of a tale!" I love that and agree with you and I also love your way of reading "homelessness" as a quality of the soul. You have keen ears to notice that one break in the strands of kindness. Imagine if we could re-tell that part, too. There's a hundred ways it could go. We could heal this story even more.
What a wonderful story, Kate, especially with the changes you mentioned. 💚In terms of re-imagining my own story I'd say it happened quite dramatically when, at a crossroads of sorts, I wondered what my life would look like if I did not remain in the family/social system ('orbit') I grew up in -- that was more than 30 years ago now and, as Mr. Frost has said, it made all the difference ❤
That's a powerful and brave choice to make and I know for sure that it has led to a powerful and brave life story - and goodness for all lucky enough to know you. Thank you, dear Artist. ❤
My thanks to you for all the beautiful lessons you share. Your tale was a welcome gift this day. Your light is shining brightly!!!
It warms my heart to hear that. Thank you so much for your loving words that are a wonderful gift to me. ❤
Beautiful story; thank you so much for sharing! ❤
You are so welcome!
Thanks a million!
You are so welcome! ❤️
I love your stories and wisdom
Thank you so much!
Wonderful story!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! ☘️
❤
I very much dislike the idea the idea that someone suffers even if some would say it is karma. To gloat about another's bad karma brings the like to the gloater. Wealth is only a tool that can be used for good. It is also more fragile than some may think as it can be lost. I worked with a woman years ago who looked down on a new lady in town for not having a car. This hurt me inside. Many years later the one who judged the new lady found herself in the same position. That hurt me, too. My hope was that she remembered. She ultimately prevailed and moved on to better things. That made me happy. We have to be careful about judging as not a one of us is exempt from misfortune, or folly.
You are so right, my friend. How many times have I been wrong, misguided, or foolish? Too many to count. I don't like stories that "stick it to" anyone. I appreciate your sensitivity to this unkindness very much. The world is better for your tenderness. ❤
👊🏽❤️🙏🏽
I vaguely remember my Nair (grandmother) and my daddy telling this story, but it was much like the other version of the boastful haughty man. I like this version. It makes me look at the ego self and the spiritual self within where the ego beats up the mind with thoughts of pride or degradation of self, and the spiritual self has to remember to invite that ego in to sit a spell and be kind , to work together and realize that together always has a much better outcome. I think that is why we feel stuck. pulling ourself against itself. I know that sounds a bit schizophrenic...hahaha.
I think it sounds wise! It also sounds compassionate and freeing, and I absolutely love your reflection "together has a much better outcome." Thank you so much for your comment!
