I remember arriving in beautiful Santorinni Island in May 1975 as a young traveller when there was no mass tourism. With backpack on my back I walked (no buses in those days) to Kamari beach where there were only a few trees at the edge of the beach. Behind the beach there were only vineyards that I now see in your video that have been replaced with dozens of tourist accommodations and restaurants and umbrellas on the beach. I slept on that beach in my sleeping bag and enjoyed that scene for several days with other similar backpacker travellers. I have those memories etched in my mind for always along with dozens of similar experiences before mass tourism changed the art of cheap $1 a day travels. I continue to enjoy your travel videos showing how travelling has become. I too travelled through Lebanon (April 1975-four days after the civil war started there) and Syria and Jordan.
How was Lebanon then? Had the violence started? What was your overall impression?
@@forcetranquille2778 yes the violence had just started four days before I arrived. I remember hitch-hiking to the south of Lebanon to Tyre and I was picked up by local people who were very good to me and hospitable. They took me to their house and fed me and advised me to return to Beirut to avoid getting caught up in it. They took me to a place where their two uncles were shot and showed me the blood which was still on the street. As a result I did hitch-hike back to Beirut and instead of hitch-hiking all the way north to Tripoli to view the Crusader ruins etc I took a quick flight to Larnaca in Cyprus where I stayed in a Greek Orthodox monastery for a couple of days. I was the only foreigner there and once again the story continues! Travelling in those days without internet, GPS, and even without Lonely Planet Guides, just word of mouth exchanges was totally different but nevertheless very adventurous and rewarding with amazing experiences as I travelled overland from Europe (after having spent three years hitch-hiking all over Europe and North Africa) back to Australia through Greece, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Iran, Pakistan, India, Nepal and Thailand, each country being different and leaving indelible impressions on my mind which I still mostly remember to this day as I approach seventy one years old. I wouldn't swap those many years of travels, and all the subsequent travels for anything.
tourism is cancer
It has turned into a very dangerous place now..full of Romanians pick pocketing etc. People being mugged is a daily thing now...shame...i wont return.

I visited Santorini in 2002, on a 4 day cruise from Athens, which stopped at 1
or 2 Greek Islands a day! When we arrived, at sea level, we could either take
the funicular up to town level, ride a donkey or simply walk the hundreds of steps!
I walked in 100 degree heat & went from the island's end to the other by bus! Gorgeous!

Most Greek beaches around Greece are not black and pebbly. Santorini is different because the volcanic rock formation

There are many reasons why the small Greek island of Santorini is so popular as a holiday destination, with its stunning turquoise waters and picturesque villages, great activities including wine-tasting, authentic Greek cuisine, regular boat excursions due to its ideal location for island hopping.
as a greek and also i have visited plenty of aegean islands , I would suggest to anyone to visit santorini for 2 -3 days maximum,beacause of the too much touristic attractions - not realistic culture " .I would suggest to visit naxos , milos or amorgos or even beter koufonisia for better beaches . But, santorini provides the iconic volcano view and the volcanic beaches ..so it depends on what are you looking for

Off season is definitely the best time, I was there end of October one year and got better deals and less crowded
Couldn't agree with you more. I was there a couple of weeks ago. Although the blue and white buildings are stunning, this didn't compensate for the fact it is very touristy. It also gets quite crowded in the narrow streets once the cruise ships dock. There are some nice restaurants though and the service in the one we went too was excellent.

The “bit in the middle” is the volcano. I’ve walked it and it’s an incredible experience. The guide told me to put my hand over a hole in the rock….hot is an understatement!!!

If you guys had more time. The ferries from island to island is nice and not expensive. You can take the ferries at Piraeus port by train from Athens. I did the Cyclades islands.

Epic drone shots! We loved our stay in Fira. We actually stayed just on the other side of the cable car, where you were. The town Akrotiri is the ancient discovered city, well worth a visit, but I’m sure you are far away on your journey now. Excellent video guys, Santorini is a must visit! ~Cara 😊

I remember a white sandy small beach on Patmos, near the campsite! There is a special bach with lots of colored stones in another place, I think it was on Rhodos!
@9:26 it reminded me a bit of the views from the Mafolie Hotel in St. Thomas when I visited back in 2018. It’s obviously not the magnitude of Santorini but being up on the hills looking out to the Islands, it’s very similar. Santorini look absolutely breathtaking, bring your walking shoes for sure lol. I was there as a cruise ship stop, we had to disembark onto tenders since it gets too shallow for ships to dock. WOW the waves were rough! Visiting the island was magical, you could feel it in the air...the history and the beauty. Yes everything was expensive, but it was a tour so most was covered. I would have LOVED to stay there for a couple nights! The view that you two would have appreciated is the one we had from our cruise ship. The buildings perched on the top and sides of the cliffs was nothing less than fantasy!! :-)))

Usually, vacationers go to Santorini late in the summer before Sept. ends. the weather is not blazing hot anymore. With the fresh cool breeze, the water at the beach is also cool to refresh your tired body from walking up and down the villages. In the island of Rhodes, there’s Elli beach you can check and the medieval walled city. Nice video you got in Santorini. Yes, drone shots made a difference in exploring the island. Kamari is beautiful, I had a wonderful experience there, went to Thira few times but definitely enjoyed staying near the beach and great restaurants 🫶🏻
