A week earlier than this race, Neil Bonnett, Bobby Allison and Dave Marcis finished 1-2-3 in the Goodyear NASCAR 500 (km...or 310 mi) at the Calder Park Thunderdome in Melbourne, Australia (Bonnett beat Allison by 0.86 seconds after 280 laps). It was the first NASCAR race held outside of North America. The Thunderdome (which cost $54 million Australian to build from 1984-87) was modeled after the Charlotte Motor Speedway, though a bit shorter at 1.119 mi but with the same 24° banking in the turns. NASCAR's averaged around 140+ mph on the Aussie speedway. It was the first NASCAR-style track built outside of North America

At the 250 mark, Bob Jenkins mentions that 3 of the top five, AK, Lake Speed and Sterling Marlin haven't won a race. Lake Speed would win a few weeks later at Darlington, and AK would win at Phoenix in 1988. Marlin had to wait until 1994.
man, i was so upset every year from the late 80s into the early 90s watching king pettys decline. he was wrecking out from the back half of the races regularly and it sucked to watch sometimes
