I just love that your parents were so dedicated to reading these stories to you!! I am the only real “reader” in my family, so I love seeing that it was so ingrained in your family💜 I am desperately needing to get into my Jane Austen era, that’s a 2025 goal for sure!
I am in my "Trying new Genres" Era. I've had different eras through the years as well, but now being in my 40's, I've been pretty well stuck in only the ones I know for sure I'll like, which are Classics, Horror, Fantasy, and Sci-Fi. This year I set a goal of trying more Contemporary, Mystery, Popular pics etc. I've done well so far, had a lot of hits, and a lot of misses (lots of dnf's). But I have realized I've been missing out on so many great authors/genres, it's opened up so many doors! Well, gotta get reading, so many books, so little time!! (Btw, you guys are sister goals, get a sister who looks at you the way Kristen and Maddie look at each other!)
Nice! What are some you’ve especially enjoyed? Any commonalities in terms of prose, plot, or characters that you’ve realized you really like now that you’ve been trying new genres?
This is so cool. Branching out into other genres definitely takes patience, but it's worth it as you find what's for you in that genre. Variety really keeps us out of the slumps!
@@samrisna5890 I've liked a lot more of contemporary, then I thought I would, historical fiction as well. One Author that I wouldn't have normally picked up and have liked all 4 I've read from her, is Lisa Jewell. I was just looking through the books I've read this year and it's so random lol. Daphne Du Maurier as well has been a great find, I've read 2 books by her so far, and really enjoyed her writing style. The biggest common factor I think, is just good writing, and a plot that makes sense and isn't full of holes!
Ahh love you both and your content! I so enjoyed the discussion of the different eras because I too have realized there’s some books that I loved as a young reader that are very different from what I would prefer to read now, but they’re all still so important to me! Currently I’m in my ~Exploration era ~ I would say, just figuring out what I like to read as an adult picking reading up as a hobby again last year. My favorite books this year have been Fourth Wing and Bride 🖤
This was a brilliant idea! I am definitely coming into my fantasy era, but I read most genres apart from crime and horror. A fave from another era is the surrender experiment by Michael Singer.
I love this format! The books I read during my childhood really shaped who I am. Going through each era feels almost too personal to share so thanks for talking about it! As a kid I would find an author I liked and demolish their bibliography. I went through an Anne Rice phase, James Patterson phase, Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, Twilight, Hunger Games. One of the authors I fell in love with as a kid and to this day is one of my favorite fantasy authors is Patricia A McKillip, shes know for her Riddle Master trilogy, but my favorites are her standalones. I just get lost in her beautiful poetic writing. Anyways, it almost feels like the most vivid memories of my childhood are of the books I read, which might not be a good thing...
Books really coincide with memories and times of our lives. It's so interesting how a book can have significance because of when you read it. Sounds like you've had quite a journey with many eras yourself!
My historical fiction rec for you is The Flight Girls by Noelle Salazar. Fantastic read, I couldn't put it down! I read One Dark Window at the beginning of the year based on your recommendation and I have trusted you guys/your taste ever since. My TBR is full of your fantasy reads and I cannot keep up lol
I am in my historical fiction era. Wolf Hall, Pillars of the Earth (everyone should read this), Lonesome Dove (everyone should read this too), Shogun, Bernard Cornwall's The Saxon Chronicles, Conn Iggulden's Conqueror series, Musashi, Gates of Fire. I can't stop reading them, they're like fantasy books without the magic. Although I've hit the point in life where I'll read almost anything and I just have genre phases, the era of true freedom.
Totally in my Epic era but am intentionally sprinkling in other genre’s and pallet cleaners in to break up the Epics, which makes me appreciate them even more
I feel like I’m in my I’m so depressed I act like it’s my birthday every day era….. Prob need to slow down the purchasing of things I can’t use now! I love that advice and will be looking into those reflection books and then buy them 😂
I swear the Hobbit has been bonding generations of readers since it was published! My grandpa read it to my dad as a kid. Then my dad read it to me, and last year I read that same copy from my childhood to my son.
I’m in a Brandon Sanderson era, I feel like 2024 was MY year of Sanderson 🤣 and a favourite from YA era is The Cruel Prince by Holly Black. Anything Elfhame just hits for me.
I have gotten picky with my adult Romantasy reads, as I find the best ones are YA and I’m not in that era right now. I still read them when I need something less dense but I’m also much more so craving epic series right now. I dabble in lit fic, historic fic, and even a tiny bit of non fic but Fanatsy and SciFi have forever and always been my home. I don’t think there were many millennial teen readers who weren’t apart of the dystopian YA monopoly (and yes I am excited about the next Hunger Games prequel Sunrise on the Reaping). Definitely a lot of overlap with our childhood/middle school reading eras. Harry Potter was probably 65% of my personality
@@Krisandmads The Count of Monte Cristo is a fun one! There’s definitely parts where you can tell it was a serialized story, but the pace is overall pretty good, and the fact that it’s sort of Dumas exploring his feelings about how Napoleon and his regime treated his father gives it such a fascinating subtext!
I started my romantic fantasy era about a year ago (still here) but M dipping my toe into epic fantasy. I’ve never read The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit - should I read those before diving too deep into epic fantasy?
Lord of the Rings is classic fantasy, so it definitely has a different feel and style than modern fantasy. If you're just dipping your toe in, I would recommend something like The Rage of Dragons, The Will of the Many, or Mistborn. See if you like epic fantasy, and then maybe go back to the classics if you really love it.
This was great! But not gonna lie, I'm a little disappointed there was no Taylor Swift involved 🫶 I feel like I was in some of the same eras as you guys maybe around the same times even though I'm probably about 15 years older, whatever that says about me. Late Bloomer! 🤷♀️ I'm so excited for the new Hunger Games book, though!
My eras line up very similarly to both of yours except I went down a rabbit hole of paleo books and came out the other end reading anything about paleo veganism before going back to meat. 🤣

What an amazing goal for 2025! Jane Austen is amazing. Still our favorite romcom writer to this day.
The best is when you get to the place where all the genres blend and you just read everything!
Mmmm sounds perfect!

Great questions! We want to know too!

What a fun era! Exploration is always a great discovery phase!
For Historical Fiction Guy Gavriel Kay's books are my rec. You can never go wrong with him. I recommend you start with Lions Of Alrassan
Amazing!! Thanks for the rec!
I feel like I’ve had a very similar journey and I just love all your recommendations ❤
Gotta love the journey right haha
This is probably the most iconic video you’ve made 🔥 we love you in all your eras
Thanks so much! We had a great time making it!
This was a brilliant idea!

Oh! Need to check that one out!!
Loved this video so much! Love when you guys do video form book content! I see and share so many book tastes in each of you❤❤
Thanks so much for the support and feedback! We are easing into the longer format and having a great time!
Obsessed with this video! Thanks for sharing
So glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!!

I love this! I had some very specific eras in my reading too. I wish we had some dark romance notes from both of you 😅
Natalie! The dark romance era was a VERY short era, with not much to recommend, except MANACLED!!!!
Loved hearing about your journey!! Mine has a lot of similarities. You both have impeccable taste! 🤌🏼
Thank you so much! It's been such a ride. Can't wait to see where it leads next.
Rn I’m in a dark academia era! Loving it so much. My last era was romantasy and a favorite was the shepherd king duology 😍
Dark academia is such a fun rabbit hole omg. And Romantasy is such a fun era.
My favorite book will always be Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. But, I am now obsessed with Travis Baldree. I love this crazy, cozy world!!
Both so elite! Outlander and travis baldree!
Aww an Abraham Hicks girly in the wild 😂❤ I loved my law of attraction, manifestation era!
It's honestly such a good era! Loved every minute of it.
I LOVE this idea and would love to recreate it!! such iconic picks and lots of my favorites in here too
Yay! Feel free to recreate! We love seeing people's reading journeys!

For sure referring back to this comments because I feel like historic fiction era is coming for us!!!

This is an amazing strategy!
If you want a fantastic Sci Fi series, I highly recommend the Expanse series
Both of us loved this show but have added it to our tbrs! Thank you!
I have just entered my Realm of the Elderlings era and I know it will be taking over my life!!
It's a hazard. Once you start you really can't stop!
I’d love a video on books classic or not, that your parents had you read or you would have your kids read
We can definitely do this!

Awe my dad read the Hobbit to us when we were little as well!!
This is so classic! How can you not become a fantasy reader when The Hobbit is part of your childhood?
I swear the Hobbit has been bonding generations of readers since it was published! My grandpa read it to my dad as a kid. Then my dad read it to me, and last year I read that same copy from my childhood to my son.

Age definitely plays a big role in the eras. Dystopian was like a right of passage for us millenials right?!
Omg i looooove this!!
Thank you! We had fun going back down memory lane.
I love my nonfiction books!!! No shame! Fiction let’s me escape and nonfiction helps me challenge myself
Love this balance!
What an interesting journey! Is there any type of book or specific book that you want to read eventually, but it just hasn’t been the right era yet?
I would love to eventually read some of the longer classics like Crime and Punishment and The Count of Monte Cristo!

Not yet! Very excited for it. Maybe it will be the series of 2025 for us!

Would you say the Hobbit/Lord of the Rings holds up as an adult? I’ve never read them but wonder if I need to!!
We read them before 20 years old so we are going to reread as adults next month with our Patreon! We will keep you all posted!
I’m in comic and manga era.
We are itching to get into this era! A friend convinced us to get the first Saga book, and we are so excited to get into it!
@ That’s on my list. I’m reading something else by the same writer.
Love how your parents read to you, out of curiosity do either of you read around to your kids?
Yes, we both do!

The health and diet books are a canon event and right of passage for sure.
