    Thanks to my work I met and hung out with quite rich people from noble families but surprisingly they were much simpler than I thought and even for a gala party, despite being obviously very elegant they were never exaggerated.
    Instead they stood out much more for their refined and kind ways towards everyone.

    I find that thrift stores are the best place to find high quality items for cheap prices. If you can't afford a tailor, UA-cam is perfect for teaching yourself how to do basic sewing. This method is not only good for the environment and for your wallet, but you learn a new skill for life as well. I have done this myself for a long time and it is still so vastly rewarding doing this compared to buying something straight off the shelf you can barely afford.

      This is wonderful advice! Sewing machines can also be found at thrift stores or Habitat for Humanity. They won’t have all of the bells and whistles of a new high end machine but those are unnecessary for basic repairs and making simple garments.

      @reefprayerresin 2 місяці тому

      @@Spamyamam - Yes some are, but gee you can get a lot of bargains! Recently I came across some brand new, obviously linen, ladies shirts, 5 of each colour, in the front of a charity store. The brand name had been cut off, so I looked for the size inside the left side seam. Then I saw ‘Italian linen’ in the label! They were $18 each, and I bought two, the girlfriend I was with, bought two, and when my sister in law saw mine, she wanted one. We all live in different towns, so we won’t be running into each other wearing the same shirts. I worked in a charity shop company for 17 years, and many brand names are donated, often with the tags still on. A $799 Lisa Ho dress came in, still with the tag on. It sold for $60. It’s a case of looking through the stock for the gem.

    You’re spot on. I grew up in a small New England town amongst very old money. Household name products family money. No one would have known if you saw these people on the street. We all dressed the same which pretty much consisted of LLBean and Izod. Some of my friends houses were superbly decorated and may have had more than a station wagon in their garage. We knew they were “well off “ but not necessarily “better off”.
    I think a sharp haircut, a healthy weight and grooming go a long way. I hate wearing labels. I had a couple expensive purses and would take the tags off. I never understood why you’d pay premium prices for shoes or purses and them do free advertising for them. Right?

    I don’t want to look rich, but I do want to look sophisticated and chic. In addition to buying good quality and getting a great fit, I think simple cuts and just restraint in general, helps a lot to get this look. As do focusing on classic styles, solid-color neutrals or basic colors (navy and light blue, many greens, red, burgundy, pinks) vs. trendy colors like neons, and classic prints (dots, stripes checks/plaids) rather than big trendy ones, do, too. I’m starting to consider some animal prints near-classics, also, if in natural colors and realistic scales. I think buying basics, rather than only statement items, is key, too. I noticed that many women who say they have nothing to wear often have huge wardrobes of all statement pieces, none of which can be worn together, and most of which are just too memorable. How many times would one want to wear a trendy one-shoulder, cutout, fringed-skirt neon orange dress?

    • @ANNAREID29
      @ANNAREID29  Рік тому +12

      @@dumebiamaechi6419 Classics are clothes that you can wear for years because they don't go in or out of style, like a solid-color v-neck sweater that is regular hip length and a traditional fit. Not too tight, not oversized, either. A straight knee-length skirt. Straight-leg trousers. All of these in standard neutral colors. A statement item is flashy. Trendy or a fad, with eye-catching features, like the orange fringed dress that the op mentioned. It's something memorable that people won't forget, or that goes out of style in a season.

    This is how ladies USED to look from the middle class. It was about manners, a calm polite presentation and classic clothes just a few quality pieces. This is how I was taught to dress. When I was a university administrator in the 80s to 2000 it came naturally for me and I was comfortable....Ralph Lauren and Tahari were my favorite designers Lord and Taylor and SAks were my go to stores for work wear. For party wear I went to Neimans for my clothing, evening bags, shoes...hundreds of dollars for shoes then on sale BUT the four pair I eventually had, I bought one pair a year, looked gorgeous on me 20 years later and my daughter now uses them for parties and they STILL are fashionable and very special. Silks, fine gauge wool,cashmere, linen were fabrics I bought. My color came from silk scarves I collected in Europe some Hermes but a few copies of Impressionist paintings from a tiny village above Nice, St. Paul de Vence. I STILL have and wear these...some are 70 yrs old from my mother in the 50s, others are from the 60s and 70s when I was in my 20s.

One never knows if your sincere compliment may have changed someones life when they were at a very low place. Clothes that are well fitting, drapes well, feels wonderful against our skin, that are quietly beautiful and not overly revealing will make anyone look and feel wealthy. Thanks for your video. Vacation...Bar Harbor, Marthas Vineyard is LESS exclusive than it once was, for being too well known for example, Southern Pines, N.C., Hobe Sound, FL. Sea Island, Ga., to name just a few.....the LESS well known the better. The old wealth shuns the limelight and anywhere celebrities show up, ruins it for them ala Martha's Vineyard. Most don't WANT to be known at all.
      One such woman the elderly granddaughter of an i dustrialist gave me over a million dollars in the 90s for a college building for my classes, just because she liked me, simply because I was active on several community service boards of organizations she approved of and donated to. She repeatedly bought all new equipment for my computer lab over the years in that building...she wanted zero recognition and eschewed publicity. We underplayed her donations at her behest, as did the YWCA I was president of for a new pool and facility, the Hospice I was president of for our first residential facility etc. THAT is how old money behaves. WHY did she like me? Well mainly because I. KNEW how she wanted to be treated having had two elderly aunts just like her. I didn't lobby her, fawn over her or make a show of myself or of her. She wanted her prIvacy protected so she WOULDNT BE HOUNDED by every community organization. i undertood this, while many others didnt. She wanted to divest herself for good causes she believed in, before her death having no descendents. She drove a late model simple car. She wore fine quality but simple clothing in quiet colors, flats and loafers except to formal events, DROVE HERSELF, had an expensive, but simple "cottage" on Sea Island, and NEVER name dropped, though I met many well known industrialists with winter homes where she lived through, her who also made donations quietly. THIS is how old money behaves and looks. Simple, quiet, low key,

    I heard Malcolm X say “you have to act you already got it if you want it!”. Your video here almost resonates with that. And I agree…rich & wealthy are two different things!!! Being a walking label doesn’t prove anything other than you’re really not used to having the “finer things” as it relates to a wardrobe. It makes me think people who do these types of things think they have overly impress others to get attention. Everything you stated here is ABSOLUTELY TRUE 🙌🏽🙌🏽! I would love to see you do a video on wealthy versus rich because there are plenty of people who have money & no taste…those are the worst 😳!

    Enjoyed this video. A good reminder to me on certain points. Am really interested lately in classic styling. Maybe you could do a video specifically on accessorizing for the traditional woman and include specifics like the traditional black dress umbrella and various ways to use/wear scarves when putting together a look - in your hair and on your body. Thanks and keep the videos coming.

    Being fashionista doesn't need to buy expensive clothes, shoes and accessories to look good and be trendy. What is important is that you know how you carry yourself to look classy and sophisticated.

    A great tutorial to find the look you are yourself looking for in what can be a noisy and "salesy" world! We see and notice mostly the wild styles of those in the entertainment industry, from influencers and the companies who want to sell the most product possible by getting us to buy and buy. Those styles get our attention and are doing their job for those wearing them. For the rest of us it can be a distraction from finding a style we would really like to have for ourselves. Understated elegance is a great look. It's one thing that helps me find calm in this busy world. Thanks, Anna, for giving step by step guidance to find a simple path to get there, or get back there, as well as great resources to find those perfect pieces.
