Bad link?
Sitting in the deer stand watching your old vids. You come a long ways since the early years.
Thanks buddy
Brother can't wait to see the rest of this big guy sawn up.
wow..that log sure is a big ol boy.nice cutting Sir.great video.thanks for sharing it with us.🙏🍀👌👍💪
Hey Joseph thanks for watching!
What a cliff hanger! Great log. I always enjoy your soundtrack too. Got my vote
thanks for Voting! I appreciate the help,
I find it relaxing watching the mill - nice work..
thank you, actually it is also relaxing to operate! Thanks for watching!
Always love getting some huge timber on my old wood mizer. 36in diameter, 16ft long dougfir is a lot of fun as well.
massive white oak Nathan, I'll be watching for part 2 of that log sawing. keep up the good work and be safe!!
Thanks should have it on here by tomorrow thanks
i like the way you made that log workable by taking off small sections and squaring it off so you can mange it a lot easier .. it takes a little bit more time .. but the results will be worth it .. can't wait to see the end product ..
Looking good there. No problem turning that mountain of a log....lol have a great weekend Elliot
you too Robert,
0:38, I hope he chooses to quarter-saw - cut eh log in half with that major heart crack levelled -- the bottom half can be quarter-sawn, do what you want with the top, actually, cut two slabs out of the centre if you prefer. a --- quarter turn --Push that broad diameter cut ( then a - so cut some small flats as well through these steps on the high-side)
That's a big honking log. Probably over 4,000 lbs. I look forward to part 2. Voted... again for the umpteenth time. :)
thanks buddy I appreciate the help!
nice White Oak, another great video, well done,
thanks!
nice work on the white oak Nathan....Just voted... good luck
thanks Vinny, appreciate the help,
Massive log!!! Bigger may be nicer but not always easier...thumbs up and voted
thanks Jack, appreciate the vote!!
wow, that's cool. Gonna buy me a saw mill and try to do some smaller work. LOL
Nice shirt on your helper. I have the same one! :) Voted...check!
Thanks Ray! appreciate the help!!
I had a place just out of West Plains, Missouri. In the back yard were 5 walnut trees that averaged a little over 50 inches in diameter. When I found out we were leaving, I wanted them harvested. She insisted that they be left. I caved. So much for a silly thing like retirement.
Wow that is some big walnut!!
Man, you gotta love the big ones that come with a fair bit of pucker factor! I had a 32" x 15' Red Oak not too long back that I had to use the clamp with a choker to "help" the loading arms lift it onto the mill lol.
yeah I was surprised this one lifted so easily, the loader on our mills is ridiculous,
Out of the Woods yeah it is. Anything more than about 3000lbs and the hydraulics like to try to give out
Well ya got a good stock of Oak shims going !!!!!
looks like that log will produce lots of fine or better grade of 1/4. sawn lumber........ looks good !!!!!!
I quarter sawed a black oak log about that size a couple of years ago on my LT40. It's been air drying ever since. I was looking at it just today thinking its time get it in a kiln to finish it off so I can make something out of it. Looking forward to seeing how this log turns out.
black oak, I have never sawed that before, similar to Red I assume?
Out of the Woods black oak I like red oak in that it tools much the same. The sap wood is very white and the hart wood is golden to coffee brown. I'll get some pictures to you.
I loved quarter and riff sawing white oak on my LT-40 mill. Some of the White oaks we cut ( dead stand, gypsy moth killed them) were 6 and 7 foot four foot off the ground. We had to blow them apart to get them on the mill. I sharpened my own blades and always backed the rake and set off to saw straighter, a little slower but no thick and thin lumber.
what kind of sharpener did you use? thanks for watching,
I had the woodmizer sharpener
Thank you.
Nice one brother
Thanks buddy!
That's almost enough to make me drive down to Tennessee ..
head this way, need help stacking!
Beautiful wood out of that white oak
thanks Scott!
That was a beast indeed!!! We have a few logs that we have been saving that are close to that but have not tackled them yet.... we are looking forward to watching you open this one up!!! Thanks for sharing!!
thanks for watching,
I feel like I've seen that log before!
Nice log
thanks Jim,
Hold on, gotta vote...k, voted !
appreciate it!
Not a problem ! You're Welcome ! I wish you had a 30 second video everyday, just as a reminder, but...
might do that the final week of the contest, it ends april 4,
That’s a beast no doubt, what do you use for the lubricant? I took a couple logs one time to a guy I know and we used his dads mill, we kept squinting diesel fuel on the blade for lube but the blade kept popping off so I’m thinking we shouldn’t have done that, or we didn’t have it tight enough.
I use water, and sometimes in the cold months I add windshield washer fluid, the kind that doesn't freeze,
They started with diesel and use water as a lube. You mighthavehad a loose blade or heavy slabs can vause a lot of drag.
Thank you for sharing. The hydraulics save you a lot of work.
they sure do, would be a longer day without them!
What size blade are you using? That looked like 1.5 inch in the video. Beautiful log.
Yep with a 7 degree hook.
good video my friend and i voted
thanks Gene, i appreciate the help!
Have you sawn any Sycamor logs? If so whats the wood look like? I have access to a tree thats down.
to date no I have not, but soon I will, I got a good size one this week,
That's a big log. That oak sure is heavy. Stay tuned for the next episode...
thanks Matt, have a good one buddy,
5 gallon bucket size sure is more productive. I cut a 30" + hickory, quarter sawn yesterday.
Where did you find that hat/what is the style of that hat called? I love it!
Most folks start on the little end of a log .But you have big slabs to move that way.About how long was that oak log??? I have saw mill man that has a LT 40. Has been sawing about 35 plus years and dose one heck nice job. Its hard working a mill all by your self off bearing and putting logs on mill to saw then moveing the boards to the stack makes for a long day LATER
that timber was around 10.5 feet, i usually also put the small end facing me but with the large end having to be worked down to fit in the mizer I have found the best practice on those logs is to do the opposite, thanks for watching,
Whittle Whittle whittle. Very nice my friend
thanks Scott, I am pretty sure your saw could have went through that one,
Out of the Woods yes sir but u got them fancy hydrolics... all I got is me and my cant hook LOL once I set them big boys down that's where there sawed lol slabs no rolling them for me...
👍
White oak at that diameter weighs around 300 pounds per foot. Nice log!
TriState Forestry Service Nice little nugget of information 👍🇺🇸
If you will trim the end of the log before you put it on the mill your blades will last longer and you will get a much better cut. I also believe it stops a lot of the stress cracking in the gullet of the blade.
good tip, I will look into that Todd, thank you,
Great video
great video,
Thanks!!
I picked up 3 large white oak logs about the size you're milling last night. I'm new to wood working. I was thinking about having them all milled 1/4 sawn into 2" boards. I want to make a kitchen table top (or two), a bar top, shelves, cutting boards, and make other small projects. Do you suggest 1/4 sawing all 3 logs into 2" boards?? I've had some people say go 1", but like I said. I'm new to wood working and I'm trying to get advice from people who have more experience. 3 of the logs are 10-12' long and I have 4 other smaller logs 4' long. The big logs range from 24" in diameter up to 32". The smaller 4' logs are about 18" in diameter.
Derrick Burtle you can always resaw the 2 inch down to 1 inch. Kind of harder to go from 1 inch to 2 inch though.
danlott71 yeah, that’s true! Much easier to go from 2” to 1”.
I ran a lt 28 manual, biggest log was 32x36x14
Do you change saw blades for different species of tree?
Nope. I use 7 degree blades on every log.
Judging from the amount of saw dust on the ground that is about the second long you have cut.
at that location yes, been sawing for 10 years,
How come you don't use a debarker on the woodmizer? I know the dirt in the bark dulls my chains fast. Great video as always. I am always surprised by the amount of lumber from a big log!
I have one of the first lt35 saws they made. Mine isn’t made to fit a debarker. Sure wish it was
Out of the Woods thanks , Nathan have a good day.
I ran a wood-mizer for a couple years full time. I don't recommend a walk behind for full-time use as it is very monotonous and wears you out walking. If you're going to work full-time you need to sit down. Walk behind is great for occasional use but these mills cost enough occasional use is Hardy practical either.
I agree the cost is not realistic.I had a basic mill and it was alot of work.Idid build alot of out buildings.
Yeeeee - haaaaaa !!!! Time to make some toothpicks out of that big log !!!!
it will put someone to work, lots of effort needed on that one,
nice timber!
Thanks 🙏
6:15, it appears that you are aiming to get 4 true Q-sawn boards -- putting the heart cracks at 45 degrees
A monster of a piece of oak.. be safe.
will do, thanks for watching
How many inches in diameter was that log
36. Way over the max on my sawmill. Thanks for watching 👍
Otw undies at tee spring would be nice!
Thank goodness for hydraulics to turn that jumbo log!
indeed! thanks for watching!
The only guy I personally know who actually owned a Wood Mizer said the hydraulic log lifter was NOT OPTIONAL.
Nice Filson hat, if I’m not mistaken. I have the same one.
yes love that hat,
Looking to purchase this exact make/ model,, any advise? maybe a sales rep?
call Woodmizer in Indianapolis, ask for Duston Moore good guy,
if you can do video on the sycamore
Will do!
Getting pretty repeatative watch trimming the bark off. How's about some center pieces.
Now that you have a bigger mill, do you ever wish you had some of these logs back to do over?
Yes
Is that log heavy? It looks heavy. I wonder if that log is the heaviest log you ever had on that wood-mizer. Are you sure it's heavy? I wonder how heavy it is? Wow heavy.
that one was around 2500 if I remember right, the log will load up to 4k lbs,
ya shoulda asked me i have done a 40inch at butt white starting square ... every time you cut it gets narrower until you get to your cant
Nathan
Come on its almost 6am.
Where is part 2?
I want to see real quarter sawn come off that Woodmizer ( i know you did'nt rift cut it)..
Peace
uploading now, should be up by 11pm,
I bet it would saw better green? That log looks dry and old?
On the ground for about a year
So its hard. Your dawdust looked pretty fine.,Do you use a hardwood blade?
Yes. 7 degree double hard blade
Just wondering is that white oak? We have red oak mostly here in Maine. We have a few white oaks but they are rare r here.
Yes white oak
Nathan are ya gonna 1/4 saw it
yes we quarter sawed it today, will have the video out tomorrow, thanks for watching,
Out of the Woods I watch a lot of your videos man. I would shoot some video but nobody wants to see me milling cross ties and pallet cants
nothing wrong with that, you might be surprised!
Yes! I love quarter sawn white oak
I do.
Boy I could really get you cows out
Your drum beat at the end of the video is a neat trick. It sounds like sub sub sub sub scribe scribe scribe scribe... lol
Oak is areal sob to saw even it's set for a year or longer !
agreed
Great job, really turned out nice.
Thanks buddy
On commence par scier par le fin bout ! Tu parles d un scieur !
Should have that cut by 2020
NOTHING NEW HERE
I did something like this a month ago with plans from Woodglut.
AMATURE!
one day I will be like you, I will die trying,
@@OutoftheWoods0623 With practice, one day they might let you play with the real timbers.
I unsubscribed because you showed trimming it up then didn’t show the next day so I won’t waste my time not knowing if you will continue to do that
Good. Don’t come back
For gods sake! A swing blade Ecosaw would have milled that log in an hour from start to finish!
30 inches in dia? We don’t call them big logs until they are 72 inches plus in diameter!
That was like watching paint dry! Termites in that log died of old age waiting for you to saw it up! 😂😂
I wonder how you would ever cope with a truly big log?
A 6 ft diameter log would take you what? A week?
Time to give it away or get serious & upgrade to a swing blade mill, either eco saw or Lucas Mill.
No turning of the log, you turn the blade instead, it pivots thru 90 degrees around its gear box.
Seriously painful to watch.
Ian good to hear from you, glad you enjoyed this video, you are so funny and witty, wish I could be more like you, for now I am going to get back to watching paint dry which is my favorite hobby, you made my day, so kind ,
That's baby log, get real.
Sorry Joe. I will try to do better. I will get real now. Stay tuned.
you are an idiot Joe, nice last name, that is a huge log for a woodmizer his size, use your brain and get real! haha,
If the loader picks it up, its too small. Nice work.
Thanks joe!
