A Walk Through a Finnish Swamp (filmed in June)

- Hi guys! I want to show you a little of the nature around here, so when I visited this swamp in the summer, I filmed it to share with you. Sometimes wild orchids can be found in such places, and I went there to film them but I didn't find any. But it was a beautiful walk nevertheless. :) More info bellow!
There are many different kinds of wetlands in Finland. Fens, mires, swamps, forested and non-forested peatlands, bogs, shallow marine waters and freshwater lakes. The one we will visit in this video is a combination of forested swamp and sedge mire. I filmed this in June 2016. The plants with the white cotton-like things moving with the wind in the beginning of the video are eriophorum scheuchzeri, a species of flowering plant of the sedge family known as Scheuchzer's cottongrass and white cottongrass.
This is just magical - so lush and leafy.

Hi Pam, and sorry for taking so long to reply. Yes, I have some live sphagnum moss in a plastic container, but I got it from the backyard of a friend. The one that grows in that swamp looks bigger than the one I have, but I can't collect from there, because it's a protected area. You live in a country that I can only dream of. Low population density, vast nature, and beautiful landscapes. And I can put up with a dark, long winter :D Sure, every country has its pros and cons, but I am really into Scandinavia, and this video yet again shows me why.
Thank you for the wonderful comment! Sometimes specially because of the long winter, I forget to think about the positive aspects of living here. You are right, every country has pros and cons. The nature is beautiful here, and the winter is beautiful, but it's so long sometimes. I can keep the orchids outdoors only from June to August, and then soon it's too cold. What a beautiful place, thank you for sharing Andrea! There are lots of swamps similar to this one here in Canada but they are not as accessible as this one , I should do some videos too when I go in my vacations.
Thanks, Corina! I think most of the swamps here aren't as accessible as this one. This one is small, and I like that there are those wooden walkways. It's a very nice place. I would love if you would make videos of the Canadian nature when you can. :) Have a great weekend!
Such a peacefull place... beatifull to see and to listen :) wetlands are so important for biodiversity but they are commonly underrated by the big public.

Thank you, Alberto! We have lots of wetlands in Finland, and they are beautiful, though as you said they are usually underrated. :) Unfortunately many swamps end up drained, and explored for the peat. They are very important, though. This one in the video is protected. :) Have a great weekend!
Quite the contrasting to the -20 C day we are experiencing in Eastern Canada! It was like a 7 minute vacation down south for me! Loved hearing all those wonderful songbirds in the background. Those ducks were not shy. Thanks for sharing a bit of Swedish swamps. You are right in that it looks like the perfect terrestrial orchid environment!
Thank you! Actually it's a Finnish swamp, but the Swedish nature is very similar and probably there are identical places there too. :) I filmed it last summer, in June. It was a very warm summer day. The winter here in Finland is very similar to the weather you have in Canada, and we had very cold days here too. Now the Spring is starting, and the snow has melted. I hope it will get warmer now, but sometimes when we least expect, it can snow again. The ducks there at the swamp are used to get food from people, so they always come close to see if they will get something. :) Thanks for your comment, and I'm sorry it took me this long to reply. It must be nice to visit a Florida swamp, except we don't have alligators here :) The nature is beautiful there in Florida, and it must be so nice to grow the orchids outdoors. I was thinking here, watching the snow yesterday (which melted away, fortunately), that it's such a short time when I can keep the plants outdoors. Mostly from June to the end of August, depending on the weather. Orchids grow and bloom better in warmer weathers. But I enjoy growing them indoors anyway too. :) Have a great day, John!
