I just received Fader Port 8. Truly a game-changer regarding workflow efficiency! Still learning it, but all of the various UA-cam videos that I studied prior to its arrival were very helpful. I have been using Studio One for decades with a Keyboard, Mouse, then Fader Port and Fader Port 2. I didn't use Fader Port too much as I have become so fast with the keyboard and mouse over the years. But Fader Port 8 is truly fantastic. I keep the single Fader Port plugged in as well and use it just on the Master. I'll probably will move it to my laptop studio,. but it is nice having them both. I highly recommend Fader Port 8 or 16 if applicable. You will wonder how you ever did without, and I am just getting into it.
yeah that "what would joe gilder do" merch gotta become a thing. i had so many mindblown moments im gonna watch this back and write them down. also mental note for myself: memorize keyboard shortcuts.
Hi joe, great stuff ! FYI, Logickeyboard has a keyboard made just for S! with all the mapping already done on it.... nothing to learn, the keys have written on them, what they do. thanks Joe, and the new videos look great.
Good stuff. Three things. 1. An additional speed option 2. A software bug. 3. A speed workflow. 1. One of my favorites is enable play start marker where it always starts at a point cou choose regardless of other options. This is the one I use when comping vocals, tuning vocals, or pocketing. Anything you move through the file from beginning to end (LtoR) but you want to restart often. Playback always starts where you drag a green triangle. 2. There is one terribly annoying bug. When using loop to selection, while recording vocals, you click on a region and it sets the loop. 👍 then you stop halfway through a take and it resets the end of the loop where you stop. I just selected the region to define the loop and it changes the end of the loop. It shouldn’t do that. 3. Sometimes I use a blank track and just create a blank region that includes the desired pre and post roll then use loop follows selection. Having pre and post roll pre defined in blank tracks makes it super fast. Typically I record vocals one verse or chorus at a time. In a complex song I have three or four blank tracks defining regions. If someone wants to dub chorus 2 I click on the region once to set the loop, keyboard number 1 to position play head to start of loop and zero (my key to start recording). I never use the pre and post roll function. I just define them with a region.
Hi Joe, I just returned to Studio One after 10 years of not recording anything. Getting reacquainted now and ran across two things related to your tips in this video. 1. Regarding "return to start on stop", I checked and it seems default out of the box is to not have that checked. Pressing the space bar just advances the play head as you demonstrated, much like hitting play and stop on a tape machine. But what I've found very cool and useful is using the transport buttons on my Faderport 8. Hit play to start playing. Hit stop once to stop and it holds there. Hit stop again and it returns to the previous start point. Hit stop yet again and it goes to the beginning of the song. I've gotten used to it and it's fast. 2. Also on the Faderport 8 is the control knob. If you press the Marker button, you can use the knob and arrows to very quickly go from marker to marker, both left and right. That's been a fast method to get around a song for me too. Gotta love that thing. -G
Regarding the 'Return to Start on Stop' feature; I like the default setting. You get the best of both worlds. Clicking stop makes the header stay in place like it's paused, but if you click stop again, the header goes back to where it started from. It's one extra click, but it works for me - doesn't work with the space bar though. Clicking stop a 3rd time returns it to the start of the whole song.
Great/helpful tips, but one of the aspects I liked the most was seeing what keys you assigned to the shortcuts. They seemed very logical to me, which makes them easier to remember :)
I highly recommend the Presonus Faderport Production Controller. You only need the basic single channel version to have most of these shortcuts at your fingertips without mapping the keyboard and remembering a whole bunch of key strokes. A few examples: RTZ (return to zero), marker forward, marker back, rewind, fast forward, play, stop, pause, loop, pan, scroll thru channels, edit undo, edit redo, etc.
The videos that you and Gregor put up for us are so very helpful and this is one of the best! Thanks to you guys and Presonus for making them available.
Thank you Joe! Great video! I followed your lead and bought a trackpad for my studio. How did I miss this most excellent piece of equipment! Game changer for sure. Thanks again.
Hey Joe, This was great. But what I would like is to see a tutorial on organizing and jumping around a session by channels rather than by event or timeline. IE VCA/folder spilling, window layouts a la Pro Tools, show and hide tracks by group or whatever. These make jumping around a large session while mixing much more efficient. But I haven't found much informative content on anything like this.
Unfortunately I’m having to downgrade my Studio One back to 6.2 as 6.5 is causing too many crashes. I haven’t changed or added anything since 6.2 only the 6.5 update. I can’t even open a song. I have checked the specs and my PC should run it with no problem so it has to be the update.
Yikes! This certainly isn't what we like to hear. Can you please reach out to support? They'll be more than happy to dig into the issue! You can do this here: my.presonus.com
Can you please tell me if it is possible to set free movement on the project by clicking on the mouse wheel (as in cubase) ? Why is the tool selection made if the right mouse button does the same thing?
I really appreciate all your videos, they been so helpful.. in this video you do a quick select on tracks to demonstrate scroll zooming and ramp the wav.. which I have done too. Then ctrl z outta there
Joe I have a Studio 24C interface. I just purchased an outboard preamp. Where should I set the input gain on the 24C using the quarter inch input on the mic/instrument/line input. Thank you Joe for all you do.
I'd like to see this feature too. There used to be an extension for Studio One called Studio One X and it was very handy - it included middle mouse button navigation. Unfortunately it is no longer being developed.
Hey Joe!! May I point you towards a mouse pen...!!! Holding a pen turns your whole wrist/arm 90 degrees different from holding a mouse, and takes you away from having your wrist against the table, where the uncomfortable pressure gets applied. Just my 2 cents! Maybe it will work for you...
Some of us have a linear editing background and we are used to scrubbing the play head. Not being able to drag the play head makes navigating difficult in studio one. I hope you guys can add this feature.
Please add the export queue function. The amount of time wasted exporting different versions when it would be so simple to fix with a simple modification.
Hi Joe, you mentioned using the track pad. You also mentioned a laptop. Is the track pad only for an Apple Laptop or can I use it with my desktop? I'm noticing when I hold down control on my Windows keyboard (I have a windows keyboard with an apple computer), and drag my mouse, the tracks do not zoom in or out. Am I missing something?
Question Joe Appreciate you content. Q. Why does presonus studio one 6.5 not allow you to show all the key notes on the piano roll.??? seems like a simple ask but has yet to be implemented. Even on the Presonus Forums users voted for it but still …and i want to say i recall i was able to in previous version. any assistance appreciated.
When I press cmd to zoom vertically on my trackpad, the sensitivity for zoom is super high. When I move my finger a just little, it zooms in/out like I moved my whole arm. İs there a way to adjust the sensitivity for that?
@flanger001 I wanna learn how to do this timing thing by ear!!! It's frustrating...I even tried it with the click track but my ears not in tune...I only can tell when stuff are way off
ahoi dudes - when i jump bars with keys - is there any option how to "mark next event on selected channel" function? do i could navigate with barjump, select a channel with the arrow keys and mark the next following event to edit it with F2 ... would be dope. cant find that option.
Why leave Return to Start on Stop on when you can simply hit Num 0 if you want to go back (answer: you don't have 10-key) Why map a Go Back/Forward One Bar when you can just hit Shift Numpad Minus/Plus (same reason - and is why I always get laptops with 10-key)
I hope this is helpful for me. Think my default keybinds must've been off, might have imported fl studio keybinds once, but the bar rewind and forward is on same key and it just moves the play bar to the begining.
I knew someone that uses FL studio so I figured I could learn with his workflow but we don't talk much nowadays, I guess I should introduce my own workflow and new keybindings.
*in Jimmy Hendrix voice* HEY JOE! (sorry) I have wanted a keyboard shortcut for a while now to no avail... I'd love to close my inserts window with the Esc key! Who does one need to email for this? I can't find an action to assign a keyboard shortcut to. Love you man -KB.
This was great. But I remapped my entire keyboard to my own liking. So my question is… How do I save my settings for future imports if I should ever need to reinstall SO on another computer?
Если честно, то ты говоришь какую то чушь... Я например работаю очень и очень быстро но ни одной из сказанных тобой функций не пользуюсь. Обычно твои видео познавательны а это какой то булщит. Сорри
This is one of the reason I switched to studio one, it's so easy to navigate compared to other DAWs
That's what we like to hear!!
Studio One does so much. It makes me wish my crappy memory wasn't the weakest link. Love it.
If the bracket "leans back" its backslash, if it "leans forward" its forward slash :) hope that helps

Great overview of useful shortcuts. I appreciate you showing the "why" in addition to the "how".
yeah that "what would joe gilder do" merch gotta become a thing. i had so many mindblown moments im gonna watch this back and write them down.
also mental note for myself: memorize keyboard shortcuts.
Sounds like we need to spin up some merch 😉

You have everything ❤, except piano roll like FL studio it's a beast

Another nice one Joe.
You can also access Loop Follows Selection by right clicking on the time bar at the top as well. 👍

Vertical zoom scroll is too fast on track pad. Joe you gotta get on them about that!!!! best wishes, always enjoy your videos. thanks
YEEEESS oh man thats why I am on this video right now :(
Thank you so much for this! As a new Studio One user this really help kickstart me!
You're welcome! Happy creating!

thanks very much for the kit God bless you bro
I LOVE STUDIO ONE
Hey, so how is the idea to add the middle button dragging function? To be as fast as all other DAWs 😅
I'd like to see this feature too. There used to be an extension for Studio One called Studio One X and it was very handy - it included middle mouse button navigation. Unfortunately it is no longer being developed.
Or maybe speed up that slower-than-sin scrolling speed while they're at it

your best video so far brother. very helpfull
Thank you so much!
I have a trackpad on Windows but it scrolls vertically instead :'( Really hope this gets fixed, it would help me tremendously
Please add the export queue function. The amount of time wasted exporting different versions when it would be so simple to fix with a simple modification.
Joe, what are the best PC specs for studio one for live performance?
Love this! ❤️

is there a way to keep auto scroll on all the time? Anytime I'm doing something it turns off, when I need it to be on. Thanks
When I press cmd to zoom vertically on my trackpad, the sensitivity for zoom is super high. When I move my finger a just little, it zooms in/out like I moved my whole arm. İs there a way to adjust the sensitivity for that?
Any way to just scroll/drag the play head?
Joe I wanna see you use bend markers on lead vocals to fix the timing issues
Honestly you're going to be better off using Melodyne for this. Audio Bend suuuuuuucks and Melodyne does everything it does better.
@flanger001 I wanna learn how to do this timing thing by ear!!! It's frustrating...I even tried it with the click track but my ears not in tune...I only can tell when stuff are way off
Hey, check out this video to learn how to get super fast with Bend Markers: ua-cam.com/video/SEZxGEV4Hsw/v-deo.html
32 seconds in and you have my undivided attention haha
ahoi dudes - when i jump bars with keys - is there any option how to "mark next event on selected channel" function? do i could navigate with barjump, select a channel with the arrow keys and mark the next following event to edit it with F2 ... would be dope. cant find that option.
Why is there no XY zoom to the mouse pointer by mousewheel? That is how it works everywhere (e.g. google maps).
Forward Slash is on the same key as the ?'' Think of the 'F" hole on a guitar for forward.
Why leave Return to Start on Stop on when you can simply hit Num 0 if you want to go back (answer: you don't have 10-key)
Why map a Go Back/Forward One Bar when you can just hit Shift Numpad Minus/Plus (same reason - and is why I always get laptops with 10-key)

HEY JOE!
(sorry)
I have wanted a keyboard shortcut for a while now to no avail...
I'd love to close my inserts window with the Esc key!
Who does one need to email for this?
I can't find an action to assign a keyboard shortcut to.
Love you man
-KB.
Does anyone know if there’s a windows version of that pad thing?
Can I get studio one 6? Pls help me, from Philippines here, help me guys
dope video bro
Thanks! 😏 👊
Back slash.,... Forward slash is the ? key.
This was great. But I remapped my entire keyboard to my own liking. So my question is… How do I save my settings for future imports if I should ever need to reinstall SO on another computer?
when you drag down keyboard shortcut mapping scheme, there is a option to export your shortcut settings
Hi Joe!
Better music not always how fast u can do it...its also how much time you put into it...classic albums took a minute according to what they artist say
How do you mic your air hockey table?
And yes, track balls are terrible.
Navigate in mac very sensitif
Not you picking up your entire keyboard to show us🤣🤣🤣
numpad 0 returns to start
BACKSLASH
😂😅
