Teen Boards and Beads Montessori Mathematic Lesson ~ AMI version

Prerequisite:
Beads 11-19
Teen Boards
Direct Purpose:
To associate the quantity and the symbols of the numbers 11 to 19
Age: 4
Material:
2 boards numbered with 9 tens
A set of wood cards which will slide into the boards covering the zero. These wood cards are printed with the numbers 1 to 9
1 large mat
A set of colored bead bars from 1 to 9
9 ten bead bars
A box
Presentation:
Invite a child
Introduce the activity and the material
Have the child set up the floor mat
Have the child bring the boxes one at the time and sit down
Place the bead’s box below the teen boards’ box.
Set up the teen board in usual manner (as in the previous presentation)
Open the beads’ box, open in usual manner. Take out all the color beads and the ten beads. Organize the ten beads below the box vertically together and the color beads as inverted triangle below the ten beads.
Close the box (for the order and no distraction)
Create 11 with the ten bead bar and the red bead at the left side of the first slot. Say: eleven.
Take the card number 1 and create 11 on the board . Say: eleven
Repeat the same process until you get to 19. First the beads and the cards.
You may involve the child as much as you see he can.
After introduce the numbers and the child still interested, you may invite the child to be creating the numbers randomly. You place a card and the child places the beads.
Later you can invert the process. You place the beads, the child places the cards.
When finish, have the child put the material away
