@@MichiganRocks Yep, I didn’t think it would be good to sit motionless and didn’t really think I wanted to trust it ruining while I was 225 miles away either so I packed it up and took it along. That way what’s in it will be completed and I can put in a fresh load when I get home. It was 12 degrees when we got up yesterday morning. Probably colder than that where you’re at. HAPPY EASTER !!!!!
When I was young living in Skokie, Ill my family would visit Evanston Beach. I was an avid rock collector even as a child. I had a nice collection. I thought the lake was the ocean. So beautiful!
I got into this about ten years ago. My son liked rocks at the time, so we bought him a rock tumbler for Christmas. He lost interest after a year or two, but I didn't.
I’m in heaven! Can’t stop watching. I’m yelling for you to pick up some that I see that are beautiful colors. Lol. I probably should’ve been a geologists. I have loved rocks since I was a kid and I used to collect them around my home. But I am in Baltimore County, so surely nothing like this. Love your video.
They're not jasper, but they could be several different things. I sent some to a geologist who watches my channel, thinking they were all the same, but there were four different rocks: andesite, skarn, fine and coarse grained metagreywacke.
I would ID more for you if I knew what the other ones were, but there are a lot I'm unsure of or totally clueless about. I'm glad you're learning from the little that I do know.
Cool (cold!) hunt! So many pretty rocks so you can pick & choose! You won't go hungry with all those pudding stones! Winter doesn't want to quit, does it?! I remember that - most folk were well into summer before winter said Goodbye!
It was a mild winter here this year. I'm pretty happy with how spring has started. Almost all of the snow is gone, although we did get a dusting on April 1.
You're right about the mudstone.....it's easy to see them as a beginner tumbler and think that it might tumble nicely and have all of those cool lines in them but you learn quickly just how soft they are and then avoid them. Cool looking rocks with large sizes but like many, the most interesting to tumble tend to be the small ones - more bang for your tumbling $$$. Love the Unakite....I pass on most of the Puddingstones I find (although I see that a lot of people love them) unless they are unusual with lots of Jasper. Your Petoskey's tend to be larger than what we find on the Canadian side of Huron near Kincardine but like what's in the video - the smaller tend to be the better - thanks for letting us walk with you.
Rob, I love the new gloves and waders! You're quite stylish on the Mystery Beach. You are so fortunate to have that permission. Wow, the Puddingstones abounded and your luck changed on the Petoskeys, too. I've trained my ears to hear the "thunk" as you drop the rocks not taken. You show great restraint. As always, fantastic footage with the drone. Glad you took us all along for this trip. I'll bet that water was VERY cold even with your new waders. Thanks for the Spring Adventure. Glad the rock was almost still where you left it last fall -- I was one who chided you and will take it all back now. Love those circles!
The cold water never seems to bother my feet, even when there's ice floating in it. My hands are what gets cold. They got cold a couple times that day, but the gloves worked pretty well. I had to hustle to get to where I wanted to fly the drone before the wind came up. I have a hard time walking down the beach without looking at rocks. I tried to keep my eyes up to walk about a mile to fly the drone. I made it just in time to get a flight in and the wind came up soon after.
At 10:20, the rock you picked is a ferriferous (iron-rich) layered sandstone. Even though, it has been hardened/compacted for billions of years, it is still a sedimentary rock, and this is why it never polishes well in the tumbler since its particles get loose once the matrix is weakened. Thank you
Stumbled upon your video. The sounds of the waves lapping & the views of the lake & area makes me miss home. At first I was calling out "ooh get that one! Oh no, that one! Wait! I want that one!", but like you said: you can't take em all home...
I gave you a lake and I became a new subscriber because you explained all those different types of rocks to us. I am handicapped and can’t get out to walk the beaches so I find your videos tremendously exciting. I love listening to the water waves crash on the beach. I can’t believe how far those beaches reach miles and miles of wilderness beaches. Stay safe God bless. 🇨🇦

This brought back so many memories. I grew up in MI and spent summers collecting awesome rocks from the shore of the Muskegon River up in Hardy Dam. One was so interesting that my Earth Science teacher brought it to Grand Valley U to have it cut but it was so hard it kept breaking the saw blades. Lol It was Green with pink feldspar rectangle blocks attached to it like the feldspar was growing on it.
You may not have found many petosky stones today, but my oh my did you get some beautiful pudding stones. The best I’ve ever seen you find. Thanks for taking us along today, the scenery is so pretty. Glad you found the ‘Indian Blanket’ rock again, she says a bit sheepishly. Yes, I was one of the many. 😧
I was with a friend today who tumbles rocks and he agrees that it doesn't look like a good candidate for the tumbler. I was going to try tumbling it, but with another very experienced tumbler agreeing with me, I am having second thoughts. I don't want to just destroy it.
My grands and I go rock hunting but never able to go to really nice places. I'm at the point that I can't say no if it's pleasing to the eye. I've been finding pudding stones in farmers fields and in my yard. Yup...I'm in Mid Michigan. Love your videos!

Lots of good rocks too. A good variety of colors and rocks on that beach. Did you get new gloves and waders?
The rock was up a ways from the water, so I thought there was a good chance it would still be there. I did get new gloves and waders. I was tired of having wet feet. My old gloves are still pretty good, but these go to my elbows.
Wow! What a great haul you had today. I think your good deed of looking for/finding the fan favorite stone from last year, brought you much good luck today. As always, thank you for sharing.
Have always enjoyed your videos. Would love to see videos where you beach hunt, then go home to tumble your finds that you mention while at the beach. A start to finish video. Thank you for making covid a little less irritating.
That would be nice, but then you would have to wait for months after I go to the beach to see the video. It takes me at least a month to tumble the rocks, and a lot of time it's much longer. I also like to tumble rocks from certain locations together, so I'll do a batch of Lake Superior rocks or a batch of Lake Huron rocks in the same barrel. To do that, I usually have to wait until fall to have enough rocks for a batch. I do eventually show the rocks from my beach hunts, but it's usually the next winter.
It doesn't matter how long it takes. When you record a scene and then go home to continue the process. We don't know how much time has transpired between A and B. But the total would make a great compilation. Just saying.
Just visited you for the first time, from Nantwich Cheshire England. Love your video, the sound of the sea is wonderful. A nice change from going mudlarking, love from Sue.

What about that rock there?" you would maybe cover 10 feet in an hour. :) Thank you for sharing these hunts with us. We vacationed on Lake Michigan every summer when I was a kid. When the first footage of the drone cresting the trees went by, I swear I could smell the air. Just lovely.

@@davidhile5363 I don't let mine sit motionless while I'm away, it keeps rolling.
@@davidhile5363 That's definitely colder than here.
Happy Easter! Alleluia! Thanks for the great video 😀
Well, it's not quite Easter yet, but happy Easter to you in a couple days!
Those Angels on Easter morning rolled the stone away. Now THAT had to be a huge rock!
I had no idea there were pink petosky stones. It’d be cool to see any ones you’ve collected/polished up. 😊
I have never polished a pink one. The two I found had such bad patterns that I left them behind.
Thanks for all the beautiful videos I’ve learned so much about the the hobby I love.
You're welcome, Randall.
What an awesome day... Those two puddings stones were amazing. Can't wait to see what they look like tumbled. Thanks for another great video!
Lots of puddingstones that day, not so many Petoskeys for some reason.
You're not the only one yelling at your screen. I tend to leave a lot behind.
Its a very educational program. I have learned many things about rocks.
Why didn't you mention you liked pudding stones. Who knew? lol!
I thought it was time I mentioned it. I like Petoskey Stones a bit too.
@@MichiganRocks You found some nice Petoskey & great Pudding stones. Those Pudding stones were monsters & quite full of colors. Nice!
Wow sangat bagus batu-batunya dan pemandangannya sangat indah.. Good lock. From INDONESIA... 😍😍😍👍👍👍
Kudos for you for picking up that plastic bag.
I usually come home with some trash. It's my way of paying for the rocks I collect.
I pick up trash, too. Those Mylar bags/balloons never breakdown.😢😡
Love these videos. So peaceful. What are the solid blue-green rocks? Jasper? Thanks 😊
They're not jasper, but they could be several different things. I sent some to a geologist who watches my channel, thinking they were all the same, but there were four different rocks: andesite, skarn, fine and coarse grained metagreywacke.
Rob thank you for showing how to clean up the beach while rock hunting ! Your awesome, dang wish I lived closer to lake Huron nice rocks 👍👍👍👨🚒
I feel bad if I don't pick up some litter. I don't get it all, but I try to get some.
Love it when you ID your finds, I learn so much from all your videos. Thank you.
I would ID more for you if I knew what the other ones were, but there are a lot I'm unsure of or totally clueless about. I'm glad you're learning from the little that I do know.
Brrrrr 🥶! Thanks for braving our Michigan weather. Hope your boots are waterproof. Beautiful puddingstone, wow.
I usually wear waders that time of year. Sometimes they're waterproof and sometimes my boots fill up with water.
Beautiful and gorgeous rocks, this a paradise! Thanks for the video.
I live in a pretty good state.
I have tumbled mudstone, but it's not easy to do, and they don't get super shiny like harder rocks. ua-cam.com/video/7poV_x1POJ8/v-deo.html
WOW! Hounding Heaven!!!! I see thousands of rocks I would take, but I can't even imagine the billions that are in those lakes!!!
Yes, there are a few to choose from. I'm fortunate to live where I do.
Thank you
I wouldn't have guessed sandstone for that one, but it is soft. It didn't appear to be grainy like sandstone is.
Stumbled upon your video. The sounds of the waves lapping & the views of the lake & area makes me miss home. At first I was calling out "ooh get that one! Oh no, that one! Wait! I want that one!", but like you said: you can't take em all home...
I’m glad you liked the video. There are a lot of people yelling at me to pick up rocks, but I have no trouble ignoring them all!
Thanks, Doug. It seems like quite a few people in your situation watch my videos. Either they can't get out due to health problems, or they don't live near the Great Lakes. I love that I can at least give you a taste through my videos. Thanks for your comment.
@@MichiganRocks before my accident my wife and I used to travel in our motorhome between one kid in Ontario and one kid in Alberta I always enjoyed passing the great Lakes at different times of the year spring winter fall summer winter was absolutely amazing with the ice the waves freezing up on the shore etc. But I never walked the beach now I can’t thank you again. 🇨🇦
@@dougsmith548 Have you watched any of my winter beach videos? I prefer rock hunting in nice weather, but the beaches look amazing in the winter too. There's also a lot of variety in the various ice formations. I have seen some cool blow holes, where waves shoot up through a hole in the ice, giant, floating snowballs, and beautiful icicles hanging from logs and branches close to the lake.
@@MichiganRocks yes I have seen some of those blow holes and some Hugh ice formations as we were passing by specially going east coming down the hill on the north end of Lake superior on TransCanada highway One. Large waves crashing on the ice formations. Thank you I will look up your winter videos. Stay safe God bless. 🇨🇦
Yeeeea!...It does have beautiful patterns...it's been waiting there. Great video, great rocks.
That rock is cool. Now we'll have to see if it tumbles. I still have my doubts, but we'll find out.
Wow. Amazing pudding stones. Some of them looked like baked bread with currants and raisins. Very nice banded chert and other delights. Thanks for the virtual trip!
That's kind of why they're called puddingstones. By your description, they would have been named bread stones.
Thank you picking up the Mylar balloon. I pick up trash including balloons on the beach too. Thanks for your rock descriptions too.
I feel like if I’m out there enjoying the beach, I should do my part to keep it clean.
Brilliant, I normally walk our mountain creeks here in South Australia, not as much material as you’ve found there, loved walking along with you and checking out all the beautiful stones.
Do you watch Jesse on the Rookie Rockhounding channel? He finds some great stuff in Australia, but I'm not sure exactly where he is. ua-cam.com/users/CrazyCrazySillyFresh
@@MichiganRocks haven’t watched him before but I will pop on over and have a look, thankyou
Lol
It was Green with pink feldspar rectangle blocks attached to it like the feldspar was growing on it.
Wow, that must have been hard. I jammed a blade in a rock that had copper in it once, but I have never broken a blade.
@@MichiganRocks maybe it will be just a nice rock for the garden.
My grands and I go rock hunting but never able to go to really nice places. I'm at the point that I can't say no if it's pleasing to the eye. I've been finding pudding stones in farmers fields and in my yard.
Yup...I'm in Mid Michigan.
Love your videos!
Lots of farmers around here have puddingstones around their houses.
Puddingstones are really special, think what nature is creating!! Looks like a huge area to look for rocks, lucky you!! You really did find a lot of beutiful stones!!! In England they call those rocks with stripes for Wishstones!! They do collect them.
I missed this comment somehow. People call those rocks wishing stones here too.
Wowza! What a good day! Love that Pudding Stone! I think that was the find of the day! Love the new gloves, Camo Cool! 😎. Thanks for taking me along on another adventure .... 💜
The new gloves allow me to sneak up on the rocks and grab them before they get away.

@@MichiganRocks I can't wait to see the finished product..
Me being in California I am just wanting to grab so many of the colorful rocks to put in my yard. You're making me so JEALOUS
You have some nice rocks there too. Lavic jasper is really cool, for example.
I’m so glad you found it!
I was on the Ontario side of Lake Huron five days after this and it was 24C! I found some interesting rocks but can't name them.... You have given me the bug and I am going to slab them. I hope they are as interesting on the inside! Thanks for all the info you share
We have had some nice days here, but not that nice. My daughter lives near Detroit and said that they have had weather in the 80s lately.
Thank you for sharing all this videos. I enjoy watching them all .
Thanks for watching them, Anita!
Omg I would literally take hundreds of rocks home 😂😂 so beautiful! What an amazing spot! So jealous
Great finds!! So glad the rock with many circles was still there. Beautiful country. Thanks for sharing
Circle that is not cycle🙄😏😅
I thought that would make a few people happy.

Those pudding stone are the best looking ones I've seen! What a find!
It was a good day for puddingstones, that's for sure.
Gosh- here all these years I thought puddinstones were igneous.
I love looking for rocks! They are some beautiful ones out there. But I'm to bad a shape too look for rocks now. Glad you can still look for them.
I hear similar comments from a lot of people. I'm glad I can bring a little of the beach to you.
First time watching……so relaxing watching you hunt!! I’ll be back!!
If you liked this video, there are many more very similar to it.
Wow what a rock pay-dirt day! Cool finds! I remember the cool looking rock you left behind. I’m glad you went back to get it.
I'm glad everyone feels better about that one. A friend with a lot of tumbling experience looked at it in person today and agrees that it probably won't tumble. I'm not sure what to do with it.
@@MichiganRocks I would say just enjoy and display it. You could clear coat it for a polished look. Or I would be glad to pay for shipping and add it to my collection😄🤣
I had to watch this one again! It's one of my favorites. The rock identification, knowledge of the rocks, and just peaceful and beautiful scenery. I love the way you film!
Thanks, Nicolas.
Just up that way over summer 2021. Got photos of the thermometer by cliff mine. Enjoy the videos. Received a tumbler at christmas and currently running my first batch. Could listen to to the waves on those beaches all day.
The U.P. is beautiful, isn't it. The Keweenaw Peninsula is my favorite part.
Wow. I can’t believe that rock was still there. I was one of the people that wanted you to bring it home. It was meant to be for you to have it, since it was still there. What a beautiful day.
I'm still not sure what I am going to do with it. I was planning to try tumbling it, but I still don't think it will tumble. It might be sandstone.
Thanks, Susan. This video was filmed on Lake Huron, which is one of the Great Lakes. It's fresh water. I have a lot of similar videos that you'll like if you enjoyed this one.
Really great video. Glad to see you enjoying the spring. I keep thinking that if you had all of us in your ear while you hunted saying, "Wait! What about that rock there?" you would maybe cover 10 feet in an hour. :) Thank you for sharing these hunts with us. We vacationed on Lake Michigan every summer when I was a kid. When the first footage of the drone cresting the trees went by, I swear I could smell the air. Just lovely.
I have had a lot of people make comments similar to yours who used to live in Michigan or visited grandparents in Michigan and love to relive the good old days on the Great Lakes. I'm glad I can help bring back some good memories.
Excellent video! I love the water. I know I would take home way too many rocks.
It's hard to leave them behind, but I try to only take what I can use. Besides, rocks are heavy!
Amazing beautiful video. I really wants all that beautiful rocks 🥰😍❤️. I want 1 rock of different states.
That would be a fun project to collect a rock from each state. Most states have an official state rock. Michigan's is the Petoskey stone.
I love rocks too. Lately I have been interested in petrified wood. You are lucky to be so close to lakes......😊
I am very thankful for living where I do.
