Jane Fonda has been telling lily to get a hearing aid for years, to be fair
😂she has
👌
"Are you talking to me?" lmao! I love Lily!
Kevin is using what we Glaswegians call a "proper accent" which is essentially trying to pronounce words in a clear, understandable manner, for people outside of Scotland to understand, which is probably why most Americans watching this can understand him. Now, if he was to speak the way he normally would on a daily basis, you wouldn't have a clue, haha! But it doesn't help that we use a lot of slang etc. I don't get why she can't understand him here. I know our accent is hard to understand but fuck sake, he's trying his best to speak clearly. I've struggled talking to Americans too, though. I've just grown to accept we talk weird, hahaha.
I know this comment is old, but I'm thinking about going to Glasgow. I'm Brazilian and live in Europe and I've always loved the "pure" Glaswegian accent. Are people receptive to foreigners there?
Dux Nihilo ur not American so u will be fine
@@duxnihilo Scotland is generally receptive to foreigners. Glaswegians are some of the friendliest people you'll ever meet.
I have friends in Glasgow so it’s a little easier for me as an American, but if they get on a real tear I have to just nod my head til they take a breath and ask for a translation.
I hate to admit, but it’s partly age and partly not being exposed to the accent that makes it difficult for me as an American woman to understand all of the comments on this video. I can understand a lot of non-native English speakers tho haha.
Lily Tomlin is a treasure. I love this.
Did ye? Aye?
@@ServiceNowTeacher brilliant 😂😂😂
Lily's question to Kevin, was absolutely innocent and hilarious!!🤣🤣🤣
Are you talking to me? so good!!
but that was real
She is 76 years old. Hearing goes as you get older. I'm 54 and if I'm in a bar with loud music playing I can't follow anything anyone says.
+Kyle Sfhandyman
Yes, but I assume you aren't too vain to simply acknowledge that you're the one with the hearing problem, if you don't understand something.
It was amazing to watch my father as his hearing deteriorated and everyone else was at fault, but not his hearing "you're mumbling", "you're not facing me, when you're talking", ...
He finally conceded and got a hearing aid, and suddenly things were so much easier, not only for him, but everyone around him.
Lily is cracking a joke....
@@jackwhite3820 shes not vain. She’s a sweetheart. Chill out.🐾
Aye, me at 33 😂😂
Kevin is easy to understand, I spent 8 hours a day working closely with a Glaswegian over on a skills exchange program and in that entire 3 month period I did not understand a single solitary thing he said to me.
you all must have no concept of who Lily Tomlin is...
Ikr
Huh?
Yeah - they dont know. Otherwise they'd show a little but more respect!
I do, and she was brilliant
Ughh. Can people please stop patting themselves on the back for knowing who an entertainer is??
Thanks for posting.
Until he spoke up, I didn't even realize Chris Hemsworth was sitting there. 😁😁😁
I am not even a native English speaker, but I still understand like 90% of what he is saying...how can she be worse at it?
Same
I think it's because of the rhythm that different accents have.
I thought she was the epitomy of rudeness in her treatment of Kevin. Don Johnson tried that shit with Brendan O'Carroll a few months back and Brendan went through him for a shortcut. I think Kevin was far too restrained in his response to her. Even Graham was getting bored of her manner after a while.
I think as a none native speaker myself I'm used to hearing all kind of accents. so we might have better developed sense for it. where as if you grew up in America listening to only slight variations in accents its harder.
+Des Sullivan yea she was kinda rude and full of herself
I'm in love with the Scottish accent😱😍
Hello from Glasgow
I love how Ron Howard is sitting amidst them and seems to really enjoy being there.
glasgow! lol answered my question from the other clip... i love his accent so much....
I'm American and I can understand him just fine.
My Uncle who is Welsh but has been living in the US for nearly 30 years now was in a shop one day and the woman behind the counter said 'Oh my God are you Scottish?'. He explained that he is Welsh and the woman refused to believe him as according to her there 'is no such place as Wales, you mean England and you're not English.' He ended up leaving the store without buying anything because all the woman wanted to do was argue about where he was from!
Norfolk Enchants LOL, yeah right, there's actually a country named Wales!! Now pull the other leg.
And one of the Australian states is called New South Wales (NSW). 😂
I understood 99% of what Kevin was saying and I'm born and bred American. Maybe it's just all the BBC shows I watch that helps me understand people with different accents.
+seeleyboothfan2 Same here.
It is!!!
Lily Tomlin is a sweet lady, always funny
erm why is no one talking about how kevin bridges' american accent is rather good lolx
+Tiffany Vuong You're right, it's excellent.
Library Heather km.
MapñzsiÑqu
Until he said "English" without the hard g sound. Very unamerican. Americans say ing-glish, not ing-lish.
Methinks Lily was having a wee bit of fun with Kevin.
yeah
I found this so frustrating that she could not understand Kevin, he really isnt that hard to understand.
I find him really easy to understand. I'm not Scottish. I'm welsh.
+Christopher Griffiths I'm Swedish and i have no problem understanding him.
+Christopher Griffiths im brazilian and i can understand him perfectly well.
+loveyouandthem ....I'm from Brooklyn, and I can't understand him at all. lol
+Christopher Griffiths I'm from planet Mars but I have no problem understading him.
I looooove Lily 💜❤️💜❤️💜❤️
I love lily
“Are you Talking to Me” 🤣🤣
Well now I feel better , because I have a problem to understand Kevin and the worst is i love him 🤣🤣🤣
Looooooove Lily😽😽
This is a classic.
Said it before and I'll say it again - this is essentially John Bishop whenever he's on the show
Michael McGrath try telling that to the American guests who have sat next to him
Michael McGrath still it's hilarious every time, especially the one when he was on with Billy Crystal and Hugh Jackman
I just find it hilarious!
I swear this is the freaking funny!
I love it when Thor sits next to ms frizzle :)
I also love that ppl r getting offended by ms frizzle lol
I think I may be watching a little too much BBC type videos because I have to listen close, but I understood almost all of what Kevin said ....
Love Lily. She's a treasure for certain!!!
I laughed harder at this than any GN bit ever!
hilarious!
"Are you talking to me?"
Gotta love Scottish accent
whenever someone cant understand my accent I try not to get frustrated and instead just do their accent haha
I have never laughed so hard.
Same 😂😂
Poor Ron just tried to keep up with everyone
BBC didn't censor!
Great
Are you talking to me? lol
My friend lived in Scotland for a year and worked in a coffee shop. She said that every so often there'd be a customer she couldn't understand.
Americans tend to be rather insular, not many actually ever leave the country, many never leave the state they were born in so they don't seem to have the ability to adapt to other English accents
jrgboy Many don’t leave the state they were born in? LOL. What kind of surveys have you done to talk out of your ass? Almost 100% of Americans travel, go on road trips within the country. And America is huge with alpine forests, snowy mountains, white sand beaches, rolling hills, high desert, Pacific and Atlantic islands and the Arctic Tundra all in one country. Don’t need to leave it for vacation for a lot of people. Get that?
@@cereal-killer4455 it's not just about weather. It's an amazing experience to see other cultures and things you couldn't possibly see in your own country. Even if you've been all across your country, your experience of the world is still beyond insular
Lauren I agree about experiencing cultures and I’ve travelled a bit myself. I was mainly dismissing the idea that most Americans are insular and don’t travel. That is simply not true. Americans are some of the most travelled people in the world by pure numbers, but as a percentage maybe we’re not. The reason why as a percentage Americans don’t feature in the list of most travelled countries is because of the isolation of the North American continent and the size of the country. It’s easy to say you’ve traveled when you’re country is tiny and most people live within a short distance from an international border.
@@cereal-killer4455 well in the rest of the world "most travelled" would imply experiencing something outside your own country/culture... but thanks for proving the point...
i'm American I can understand him just fine
I'm Australian I understand Scottish accents fine
What is it with Americans and us Scots? We understand you fine!
+Johnny Mac And we understand you. Shes 76. Hearing sort of goes as you get older.
Alex Conway True. But she had no problems with Graham
Tbh, his English is very crisp and clears. Chris has an accent, but is not as strong as some Australians, it kind comes and goes. Bridges' accent is very thick. I could understand him mostly, but some parts were hard to comprehend. Add the thick accent to Lily's poor hearing and its a cocktail for disaster (Im being dramatic, but you know what I mean, hehe).
it's just his accent is really, really, really, really think. It's even thicker than when us Americans make fun of the accent. Compare it to our deep south accent. Not the southern classy antebellum accent you see on TV. the real one. it's almost unrecognizable.
Johnny Mac
it's because we grew up watching shitty Hollywood movies. the only Scottish accent she's probably ever heard is from braveheart
next week - America vs Limmy in Dee Dee or Jacqueline character mode
Wouldn't be surprised if Ms. Tomlin has hearing issues. As my mother aged and her hearing deteriorated she had noticeably more difficulty understanding people who had strong accents than those with accents closer to her own. Graham Norton brought the subject up, as he has done in the past when one of his guests has a strong regional accent, but unfortunately, in this case, it didn't engender a response that was funny.
He loves asking that question. He should let it go.
Kevin Bridges might have to put on that American accent of his for the whole interview just so that Lilly Tomlin can understand him!
Please, I understand him very well and I am not a native english speaker
I think it´s funny, that it always seems to be the Americans who have problems with other English accents. While we non native speaker just shrug and wonder what´s the problem.
Kevin's not that hard to understand, I caught about 95% of what he said, but I think he is slowing his speech down a little.
I'm aussie, Chris is also speaking very clearly and a bit slower, if he spoke like your typical aussie, it would be a lot harder for her to understand haha.
Americans struggle with most foreign accents because they so often think that the world IS America!!
Mark Rogers and Europe is a country.
Our accent really isn't that hard to understand I don't get how some Americans don't understand us
They rarely watch or read anything that isn't in American "English" spoken by an American.
solatiumz that’s just naive and stubborn. It’s the same language we’re speaking? there shouldn’t be that much confusion. I can understand the odd word or two but it’s literally an accent.
I am Asian and I can understand Kevin.
Turn on the close captioning. You'll see that the British close-captioning person can't understand him, either.
She was joking guys
Don't think so... It's hard if you were never exposed before
If she can understand Craig fergusonshe can understand any scottish accent
😃
Internet People brought me here
아니 무슨 단어를 말하는건지 모르겠어ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
Ron Howard really needs to let others speak
1:00
akšuwə traidə show
What?
"I actually tried a show"
Lolz. Thank you. It seems obvious now that you say it, but I just could not figure it out.
You're very welcome 😉
That woman looks like the austin powers woman, frau fabisina
Lily understood him fine. She was being the typical American diva, probably for laughs. She's done this king of arrogant thing before.
I can barely understand what he is saying and I’m pretty good at understanding people with accents so I don’t blame lily for barely catching a few words here and there
no you are not good with accents then...lol
Damn and I thought David Tennant accent was strong...
+Michael McGrath oh my god. Dude, we have different accents in this country. A lot of people can't understand New York or Appalachian accents. It's just a thing.
+Michael McGrath No need to be rude. I'm not a native english speaker and I don't know every accent of the UK, that's why I thought David's accent was as strong as it could get.
+Michael McGrath Dude, I meant people OUTSIDE the U.S. Can't understand thick New York accents or heavy Appalachian accents sometimes. You need to calm down. To say you have no chill is an understatement.
@@MichaelM28 jesus lol. Don't be a dick.
Why do so many Americans not understand accents.
I love Lily. But I see an ever growing amount of Americans in particular who struggle to understand foreign accents. I can’t speak for everyone but I can say I see it a lot. Especially on talk shows. No offence meant in this comment (for the snowflakes)
I noticed that, too. I remember when they interviewed Susan Boyle for an American show and they used subtitles. And I was like Huh?!? I´m not even a native speaker and I could understand every word she was saying.
As a Frenchman, I think that the Scottish are the only people on Earth who sound like foreigners struggling to speak a language which is actually their native language. I don't get why they don't try to speak standard English when they're outside of Scotland.
She's American so no more.
wasn't difficult to understand and English is not my first language
She's right, I cannot understand those two boys at all.
she was really pushing her luck
Old people have always hearing problems, sorry for the woman...
As a foreigner, it doesn't sound like an accent, it sound like a speaking disorder.
Someone needs to teach that woman some manners!
Strange how she doesn't understand someone who speaks proper English.
I’m so glad I don’t sound like him
not a friggin clue what the dude on the far right is saying..... can't understand him at all....just like liverpool people accents..
She's sooo rude! I'm not a native speaker and I can understand him! How can she not? She's an actress after all! Has she ever not read or heard another accent?
Because she's not even trying...
Why are Americans so snobby, that look on her face when hes talking just pisses me off.
Lily is fun, but sometimes the lesbian comes out a little too thick.
She was terrible on this show. Her 'if I won an Oscar' story was boring and just nothing. She came across as rude too - the "I'm not talking to you" comment. She missed the spirit of the show completely.
She doesn't understand much and thats why shes hardly in any decent films.
