De La Soul on NWA Inspiration, Breaking Boundaries with Bob Dylan & New Generation of Artists

- De La Soul has stood the test of time simply because they were different and weren’t afraid to be themselves. When you look back at their musical contribution it still pays dividends in the form of touring which they still do to this day. But, even trendsetters get inspiration from those around them and for the legendary group it was watching NWA in 1989 that had the biggest impact on them. The goosebumps…the high of just seeing how fans responded to their music singing word for word even down to the transitions sparked something that will inevitably take the group into more than 20 years of killing shows.
Of course when you do something new or different you will be faced with opposition and they faced it head on. Hitting the stage with Bob Dylan at times or making similar moves just to break barriers of what was deemed “the usual”. Fast forward to today, Kaytranada opened up for Madonna which is incredible! Without artists like De La Soul, that wouldn’t be possible. It says something when these guys are still able to tour and are now on their 9th studio album. Longevity at its finest.

De La is one of the greatest, yet one of the most overlooked groups of alltime. They're one of the reasons i love hiphop! #salute
FACTS
I can dig it!
dope
I was 15 when I first heard De La and i'm still a fan i'm 42 now
Larry Green Word!
De La do not get the respect they deserve, they have one of the most innovative and creative discography's in Hip-Hop history, true pioneers of alternative Hip-Hop, from Prince Paul's production on the first 3 albums and the unorthodox sampling and song structures, to the fun and creative song concepts and flows. They don't have a single weak entry in their entire discography, 3 Feet High and Rising, De La Soul Is Dead, Buhloone Mindstate, Stakes Is High...so many classics. The whole Native Tongue collective was incredible.
Native Tongues is more comparable to Beastcoast(Pro Era, A$ap Mob, Flatbush Zombies, Bodega Bamz, Smoke DZA ++). It was more a term/representation of groups and artists with a similar mindset and outlook on music. You can just imagine how hard it is to gather so many groups and artists around one project.
Alex da Costa word!!! I think the first art official intelligence album is underrated too
I'd love to see a De La Soul documentary like the Tribe Called Quest documentary. Its great that they are able to stay together as a group when so many groups have broken up over time and even newer groups havent been able to stick together.
There is one now about 30 min no commericals pretty good
I agree 100%, we need a de la doco
"Can't forget the De La, Due to originality" -Phife Dawg, "Clap Your Hands"
And if I went solo my favorite MC would be me...
+Nigmatics that's from a tribe called quest still dope.
+paul mayes I know. I'm responding to the guy above me. He's quoting the de la shoutout from Phife's verse on ATCQ- Clap Your Hands
May he Rest In Peace.
De La Soul are legends. Prince Paul's immaculate and innovative production on those first 3 albums is remarkable. Their verses of truth, fun, and honesty to themselves really made De La Soul stand out. I cannot wait for their new album!
akat9700 Stakes Is High is so good. Wish there were more J Dilla beats on it though.
eye absolutely love these brothers. they've always remained humble & one of the most innovative & greatest groups in hip-hop.
"Nowadays you wanna sell out. You wanna sell out in every format you can. It's call branding now". So true...
I was in Wellington, New Zealand and cut high school class to see them at my local music store back in the 90s.
de la soul on a roll black medallions no gold! much love to these brothers
Thanks Sway's Universe Team!!! Finally!
I used to think David was so fine. Anyway, I think _Breakadawn_ is my favorite from them overall. I just have a really good feeling about that song and time. Great interview.
They live show is one of the best I have seen and I love their music for simply being fresh in every way
Their being different is the reason I loved them. I am an 80's/90's kid, so I grew up with parents born in the 50's. I think we & they understood real music more. It was a time when there was great stuff to sample. So, because I heard different music, I like De La because they were unique in their flows and samples. Wow! Tito Puente opened for them? Wow. Loved when I was born. Anyway, I grew up listening to Gospel as well, and now that's about all I listen to because I LOVE JESUS! It's the BEST thing anyone can do, is accept Him. It's still fun to reminisce sometimes, but Jesus gets ALL THE GLORY!! If you don't know Him as Savior, please do it.
Holy shit, and they have Kaytranada in the background! Daaamn, interview is stacked with Hip hop legacy.
Listening to these people's say they old heads in 2023 when im 60 this year.
The "Trainwreck" joint is 🔥🔥🔥🔥 that bass line is stupendous! Salute to these game changers👑👑👑✊🏾
spun my Buhloone Mindstate CD until the green paint came off
Maaaaaan, De La Soul man, one of my favorite group, can't wait for their new album to drop!!!!!!
Me myself and I still slaps s/o de la soul
Glory glory hallelu... Wake Forest is the home team, much respect to TD and his fans
WOW! DE LA SOUL!! ICONS!!!
Living legends in the flesh
Nothing but respect
Unsung!! Caught them around the late 90's at the House of Blues in LA Fife and Tip came out as well, unexpected. Such a great crowd of young and older and races. Thank you Sway, HB, and De La Soul
Such an incredible group.
I'm in my 40's and still cool with Hip Hop because unlike many people I never limited Hip Hop to just rap. There are other elements to this than just rap. Street dancers of various styles, graffiti artist and Dj's are still out there. They can be found on youtube.
great interview
I can listen to De La forever. That's how I know they stand the test of time.
Love love love De La man...De La Soul is Dead is the FIRST ever hip hop album(and my favorite) i played for my son, and from there i would hand him classic hip hop albums to listen to and he throw's me new artist now that he feels has bars, to check out. Much props to the Native Tongues movement for helping shape diversity in hip hop! Much props!
Much respect, always true to themselves. Bought 3ft high in middle school and been a fan since.
Timeless Creativity!!! Originality and VALUE!!!
one of the greatest groups of all time new style of speak flows rhyme patterns very creative musically
De La creators of the album skits, having multiple remixes, the fade with dreads on top,the ill fashion and using their own lingo. #Salute #Realhiphop
legends
@ around 13:30 he mentions the artist with the song "War", and I'm pretty sure he's thinking of King Los.
I got to see'm rock out in Charlotte, NC.. they're definitely living legends.
Legends never go away respect
"..bitin' has become cool." ~BabyHuey #DelaSoul , that's a doggone shame! Per our school of thought? No autonomy will never be cool! It's clone robotic lame drone sh*t!
Will cop your new music! Thankhs for being different! In a sane dope way!
My favorite group
Hokay which misery guts put a thumbs down? Philistine :) Thanks 4 posting, De La still my very best favourites xxx
luv the album.
Legends
Roc Marciano. Little Dragoon. I'm in. I was already in, but I'm definitely in now!
Hats off to DeLa
DE LAAAA!
Heather B is a national treasure.
Sway I'm 17 and this the most pumped I've been for an interview. I know my history
+Leoven damn you fuckin fast lmao Nah , I just like music cmon guy
+Leoven I bet he is
i'm 17 too g & i'm not one of those guys. i love 90's hip-hop & i love hip-hop today (well, not all of it). i own Big L's first album, Nas' It Was Written album, Mobb Deep's The Infamous, ATCQ's Midnight Marauders, Big Pun's Captial Punishment & a lot more. you can tell from my name & picture that i love TDE & Pro Era. my point is, i love a lot of 90's hip hop but i love a lot of cats that are out now. people like Joey Bada$$ (my personal favorite), Jay Rock, Ab-Soul, Royce Da 5'9, , these are the guys i look up to. i don't really fuck with that turn up, i'm rich as fuck, drill, or party music.
***** exactly man
RIP to the legend Dave Trugoy Plug 2… ✌🏽🕊 ☮️ 🙏🏽
Sway and Posth just put me on Tunji Ige...He's dope!
Top Five GOAT hip hop duo any day🙌💯
Trio
De
La
Soul
Seeing Kaytranada together with De La makes me think of how sick a collabo would be! Kaytra Soul or something!
Really hope to see a De La Soul x Kaytranada collaboration soon
As a white man De La was my Hip Hop gateway drug. especially being raised northern cali.
BRING THE HIERO-MOVEMENT BACK. HIP HOP NEEDS THIS!
Top 5 group in history, bar none!!
A De La Dylan show sounds cool to me
Caller #2 yes
👍🏾
Sway wouldn't even give a chance Kaytranada to even say a word on the mic! You could see Posdnuos face at the end of the video!
yo roc marciano is the man!
Maseo hella sounds like Cam'ron
Nah Ja Rule
I'm an "old head" (42yrs) from New York so I was around when hip hop was born and loved it from day one but it makes me cringe when I hear people my age hate on the younger generations. When we were young, adults hated on what we were doing and all it proved was that they were corny and out of touch. Let these kids live man
I'm 38 & completely disagree with you because what your speaking of is not what's going on here. I HATE it because 99% of what you hear on the radio & see on tv is garbage. You know good & well we had lyrical, conscious, & party rap. Hell we had people who incorporated all 3 in one song. I can't & will not change my opinion cuz u, dude from De La Soul, or any other "old head" says too. I can't get with 99% of mainstream "hip hop" & saying I should appreciate what I consider a mockery is BS. I want variety in Hip Hop not force fed garbage
+iveywebb nobody asked you to change your opinion, I was just stating mine. We're all entitled to our own. Live your life
"Hate" is such a strong word, whether applied in an opine or actually felt, in displaced dissonance.
We didn't feel any "Hate" with #DelaSoul herein.
We'll be so glad when the fragile egos and super sensitive cease aligning mere "disinterest" with #hate. Sigh..
long as they keep the poetry not mumble garbage. you coming from the true school era should know that and not every old head whennwe listened. to could a least hear the lyrics the just thought we should play an instrument cuz back then so when we were scratching records. it was like that aint music if you not playing it but words and poetry was respected
Gotta love it when the old heads show love to the new school
it's funny cuz I always say the opposite
Don't like a way pos shook the guy's hand @3.38, man he didn't even look him in his eye..
De La Soul and Rick Ross are both on their 9th albums. I find that interesting.
Not asking the important questions: what was it like...doing that one song for PaRappa the Rapper 2?
me myself and i .....🤣👏👏👏
Anyone think they’re underrated because a good chunk of there music isn’t streamable?
in the rap pantheon
them, gorillaz and flatbush zombies on a collab album would be incredible
DE LA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Prince Paul needs a haircut!!!!
Hmm... Am I the only who see's a possible older resemblance of "ILOVEMAKONNEN" in this interview?
it's his pops lol
Why is De La's music so hard to find on streaming sites (Itunes,Spotify,Tidal etc.) 3FT High & Rising, DeLaSoul is Dead etc. most of the content i see is newer stuff which is great also, but Tommy Boy what gives??
Tommy Boy records died and took their masters to the grave with them. De La has their own website (sorry, forgot the name of it) where they released all of their old albums themselves but since it's not official the quality is kinda low...but that's the only place to get it digitally
part of it is because of " sampling rights"
+fleshnbone187 it's a shame this sample issue can't be resolved. There's a whole generation missing out on some unbelievable music
Pot holes in my lawn was the joint
So mythical the Native Tongues.
Once one of these guys dies, everyone will be like, De la Soul were the greatest!! Right now, no one cares. Sad you have to die to be celebrated
:'( rip Dave February the 12th 2023 .....
No Dislikes. Fuck Yea
Look how awkward Kaytra is in the corner hahaha
Sway should step in the front, and address the Afrikan bambaataa issue ..
whats to address ?
Its great but no need for sweating as it spoils....
HOLD UP... Who is that dude sitting to Sway's left? Help out an old, out-of-touch nigga
I don't think it's a hater thing as to why people don't like hip hop anymore. It mostly lacks creativity and unique stuff. Of course some people have good stuff, some people are creative, but it's not as good.
SWAY's Cohost is so irratating. She has to comment on everything Geesh!!
Jeez alright Sway, make it all about yourself - 3 1/2 minutes to get to De La Soul? And that woman 'uh-huh', 'yeah' in the background, please give it a rest. And then another minute to get to an actual question.
Start here people:
