This video is so helpful! Never worked with egg tempera before and had no idea how to gesso a board!! Thank you so much! This video really helped a lot!
Hi Hector, thanks for this. I’ve heard that you should dampen the surface with a sponge every time before you put a new gesso layer down. Did you do this?
I haven’t tried this but that sounds like it would help each layer bond. I also have heard that it’s best to seal the wood first before applying the gesso. Thanks for your comment and question!
Thanks Hector , I seem to remember some artists saying that prior to gesso, a sizing had to be applied. I need to go back and read my Robert Vickery book on egg tempera painting “ New Techniques In Egg Tempera”. Have you seen that book? Really good.
Hi Herve! Thanks for the comment and for watching the video. I’ve read similar things too about starting with RSG. At some point I’ll add it to my process I’m sure. So far the gesso seems to adhere well enough without it since there’s RSG in the gesso already. If I change the process I’ll be sure to share any updates online.
Hi~ have you ever had an issue with it not congealing within the 2 hour time frame? I'm wondering if my issue is because I made a giant batch, but I was just curious.
Hi I haven’t had any issues with that part of the process. This product has worked for me each time I’ve had to use it which is probably 20 or so times at this point. I would make sure that the powder is evenly mixed with the water before letting it congeal. Hope that helps!
Thanks for the question that’s an area of traditional gesso that I don’t have experience with. I’ve only used Rublev’s Easy Gesso as a ground for small scale Egg Tempera paintings. Best of luck with your projects and experiments. Thankfully we have people who might be able to answer your questions here on UA-cam 👍🏽
Hi in my experience each layer varies between 10 minutes to 30 minutes to dry depending on climate and temperature. I believe you should be adding the next layer once the prior one is dry to the touch. I feel like waiting overnight before adding a layer doesn’t create as stable of a bond but I can’t guarantee that’s true. Good luck if you decide to work with it!

would this be the same process for preparing gesso panels for carving into them?
If you want to like carve a relief design into the panel, it would, but you'd need like 4 mm of gesse which would take a very long time.

@@williamhuber9639 i am a pretty good wood carver and want to explore this craft...but can not find much info ...
@@leepetersen4082 You can actually gesso carved wood if you want to gild or paint it. Ruth tapin, gilder is a good channel for that kind of stuff.

Can i ask how long each layer takes to dry?

Thanks so much Hector. My son decided to use egg tempera for his year 12 paintings. Your video was incredibly useful as a reference.
