      If I could attach my pics I'd show you all the shells and sponges collected. And after having followed you for a bit, finding out some things we've found on our vacations have been great finds!!!
      I have been buying lidded glass jars for the past year and half so I can display them. Our daughter fusses that she thinks we have collected plenty.
      Finding a seahorse was the absolute best though sad. At least he is loved in this afterlife by being put in a display cabinet.

    I have had a really rough week dealing with Fibromyalgia pain that's making moving and walking hard to do and I sooooo needed this stroll with you...hearing the water, birds etc... and just breathing in the briny beach from my recliner. Thanks so much for the mini retreat! The sights, sounds and scents of the SWF beaches always calms me. 🥰🐚🐬🌴🦀🏖❤

    I have learned so much from you. Our daughter and family have been at Cocoa Beach for 3 days. They are absolutely loving finding shells. We have chatted and she has sent pictures. I have told her what some of the shells are. Today she did a video chat of her and our granddaughter at the beach. She said Mom I just called to take you to the Beach with us. It was so much fun. I was so excited ! The found angel wings, scallops,slipper snails, and many more. She was amazed that I could tell her what most of them were. She also found a dead sea star with 8 legs. It was huge. Thank you for all of the work you do to make these videos. They are the highlight of my week. ❤

    Holy cow that Sanibel Turrid is spectacular! Even if not a keeper that is awesome to see what they are supposed to look like before the waves destroy them. I've only ever found the worn individuals, never knew what they look like alive. What a fabulous find! Can't wait for the next beach walk!

      Wasn't that specimen spectacular? Most the ones I have are also pretty worn - even the examples in books aren't that great. Hopefully one of these days I'll find one in that good condition 😃 I still haven't found a giant eastern murex myself so there are lots and lots of shells I'll still hunting for.

    If you have to ask this question then you won't understand the answer. 1967 my grandmother took me to the beach and we collected seashells. We picked up slipper shells, whelks, clams, scallops, periwinkles and moon snails. That was on Cape Cod. Today I live within walking distance of a world class beach in Florida and go out collecting a hundred times a year. Almost every time I go shelling I find something I have never seen before or a better version of one I already have. Just last week I found buried in the mud a horse conch that measures a whopping 25.25 inches which is bigger than my book on shells claims they get up to. No animal inside. It was a bit worn and decayed, lots of holes and chips and a big break in the lip but given the size it's now a major addition to my collection. Last year the big shell I found was a 5.875 inch crown conch and I didn't think they got that big. My book says three inches. This one also a bit worn, no coloration as it was completely white but unmistakably Melongina corona with six rows of spines. It might actually be a fossil given the color and condition. I could not tell if it's ten years old or ten thousand years old honestly. I found it when I lifted off a piece of dead coral/Tampa agate to get at what I thought was something else. Both found in the Tampa Bay area.

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  4 дні тому

      That crown conch you have sounds like a fossil - but still so impressive the size they used to get!

    Thanks a lot or this beautiful video ! My favorite animals are snails and slugs. I love the way, you treat the living animals you find, with respect and love.
    I saw, you picked up a Cona shell. Are you not afraid, that if there is a living snail inside, it can prick you with its harpoon and inject venom, that can cause serious illness and sometimes even worse? I know this has happened before to unknowing shell pickers. I hope, that it does not happen to you or any other shell picker.

      Our living cones down here aren't as deadly as some of the other ones in the world. If I were to be stung, it would be more like a bee sting and likely wouldn't do much damage. I'm still quite careful with them though. I haven't been injured yet and I'd like to keep it that way!

    Late again, but I have an excuse! I was writing a message to an angel and getting items together to make someone's life better and feed their kids. Forgiven?
    Ft. Myers Beach! So much fun! Speaking of rebuilding the beach, did you know when the beach at Panama City was "renourished" after a hurricane a few years back, the Corps of Engineers took the sand from that mythical place called "the trough", where the good shells are dropped by the waves.
    People were going through the piles of sand and shells so wildly, searching for the good shells, that guards were reportedly stationed to protect the piles of sand and shells meant to rebuild the beach! I know people who went out late at night, though, and poked around after the guards left! There were many trophy shells found and, if I remember correctly, several really great Junonias!
    So ... just keep those thoughts in mind if COE does the same at FMB!
    The brittle star is going "Move my little stumpy arm...move my other arms...move my little ...Oy!"
    Poor little lettered olives! They're probably getting stepped on all day!
    Such a fun day! Glad I dropped in to come along! Good haul, too!
    Love to hear the happy in your voice. You must be feeling lots better!
    Much love until next weekend! R

      Your time is yours, not mine, so you watch whenever you dang well please! I've heard stories of people sneaking past guards to hunt shell piles! Our beaches will be dredged sand, so there likely won't be piles but maybe there will be some special specimens that wash up! 🙏🏼

With a container to go in it for delicates. I'm going to make a video about the "equipment" one would need in different weather!

    Hi! I just want to say love you videos, and they have motivated me to book a vacation on Sanibel! I've been seeing a lot about a red tide though and how it is really bad, which is scaring me for my 2/22 vacation. Do you have any experience with that?

      I have experienced red tide and it does make me cough. Since I'm recovering from the Flu and still coughing already, I haven't been over there but I have seen the reports that red tide is over there. Unfortunately it looks like it's present on the entire island. Will it be gone by 2/22? I really don't know. I use this website to check before I go out to make sure I can avoid it: myfwc.com/research/redtide/statewide/
      Personally I would try to vacation with little to no red tide.

    So, hopefully, you see my comment. I feel like my comments get filtered out because never do I get a response to any comment that I make like only 1 time has it happened and I was very surprised, but I'm gonna leave a comment here. I wanted to tell you that I think the lettered Olive is my favorite, and the reason why I believe that the Olive is shiny is because they burrow through the sand and they travel along the sand and the sand. Shine, zit up, smooths it out that the sand allows it to get that. Shine on the outside of the Olive. That's what my opinion is, but I don't think anybody really knows a 100% what causes that.

    • @birdsflowers2289
      @birdsflowers2289 6 днів тому

      Hi there ! Actually yes, they know what causes them to shine. I was learning that it is their living mantle that causes them to be shiny. It is at it 24/7, same reason Cowries shine.. Consider that the cowries do not do the travels through the sand like the olives, yet they are very shiny. This is stuff I am learning. I got in touch with the Bailey-- Matthews National shell museum today. They are so helpful.

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  5 днів тому +1

      The animals body protects the outside when it's digs in the sand, keeping the shells nice and shiny!

    I must say I don’t like that they call some of the moon snail shells ‘false’ shark eyes. Just because there’s a different indentation on the shell is no reason to question the creature’s integrity. You’d think it was a politician or something.
