@@helenpinchen4712 When I was around 10 or 11 years old I became very sick with Hepatitis. I was bedridden and delirious with a high fever. Floating in and out of strange dreams. Then I had a vivid dream of a girl appearing and stroking my forehead and somehow communicating with me and assuring me that I would be alright, probably my mum in reality. I think that was the moment when my fever broke and I woke up feeling better. So the feeling that stayed with me all these years was one of being saved by someone. I was trying to describe that feeling in the song. A soldier lies wounded on the battlefield. He thinks that one of his mates has come to carry him home. Not exactly a party song!!
@@philbuckle Thankyou so much for sharing this. The song does convey that sense of being lost and on the point of giving up then beyond hope being helped back to love and life and the world. Not a party song but a beautiful, poignant and for me, an important one. The ability of love and friendship to carry us through the dark nights of the soul as well as our physical pain. I deeply appreciate you taking the time to respond.🌼
Discovered you through the greatest singer of all time JF. I wish you guys could've kept it together...Irwin is an incredible singer/artist, you had incredible songs and one of the greatest drummers of all time! Thank you for 3 brilliant records that are on constant rotation in my house! 👍😀🎤🎸🎼
More than 30yrs ago when the Southern Sons came to the Philippines...I saw them performed in a famous tv show, sang "You Were There" and since then I couldn't forget Jack Jones (Irwin Thomas), his looks and his beautiful voice. I'm glad there's UA-cam where I can play their songs again and again.
I can't believe this is finally on here.....such an outstanding song and performance....I never forgot it and searched for it so many times......thankyou so much,,,,,what a great shame it never got recorded......so amazing especially with Jack......thankyou so much .
It's quite daunting to find the right words to describe what happened here, both in the video and to the listener who has stumbled upon this extraordinary work... Suffice to say the lyric and its intent are perfectly nested in a harmonic cadence that is inseparable... It is sooo rare to find this pedigree of penmanship and harmonic craft, let alone united in a single song... This song, leaves a wake behind it... that ripples through the soul and memory like lightning both illuminating and humbling as there is absolutely zero doubt in the conviction of faith this writer has, the power of the truth in these words carries into the melody with such sympathy that it is as if the Creator himself has reached out and touched us personally... Mr. Buckle, this truly is a masterpiece of songwriting, on such a level one rarely gets to experience.. You have indeed been blessed, and have delivered from these blessings some divine fruit.. God Speed, sir.
WOW!!! This is my favourite memory from all of the Carols performances. I watched it live, recorded it on a video tape and played it so many times the tape broke! It is amazing to see and hear it performed again, I have searched for it so many times. This absolutely should be released on an album. You guys are brilliant together, the song makes me cry every time I hear it. Such extraordinary talent...thanks for sharing on UA-cam!!!!
I recently found a box of old vhs tapes. I used to record Carols by Candlelight. I borrowed a video player and have been going through them. I was searching for only one song. THIS ONE! It is, for me, the single most beautiful, original, powerful song ever performed on any carols. The song, Irwin's (Jack's) voice - it is stunning on any platform. I used my phone to record it but see you've put it on youtube. This was 1995 (written on the tape). All those years ago I sat there, my jaw on the ground. A friend rang me immediately after the song finished just to check I had just experienced this. Their reaction was the same. Just thought you should know the impact it had. And still does hearing it now. Resurrect it, please.
So nice to read these comments! I'm sure Jack feels the same. At the time I wanted to side step the whole pop thing and explore and expand as a writer. I remember being very pleased with the performance and totally blown away with Jack's delivery. But then nothing really happened with this song and Iife carried on. I thought at the time that perhaps it was a little too sophisticated for a "pop" act and that was that. But I personally love songs that make me feel the way that this song makes me feel and it's so wonderful to know that other people also feel the same way. This is one of those times when I appreciate the sharing aspect of You Tube.
@@philbuckle Makes me cross that those in the powers to be underestimate the public like they're all a pack of dumb dumbs. Bohemian Rhapsody example - It'll never work, too high brow. 'I am Found' is magnificent in its beauty. I just showed it to my brother - same response 'Wow!!'. Resurrect it, please. I just sent a message to Irwin saying same.
Phil Buckle.. Greetings from New Zealand! I've loved your music for years.. And it had inspired my songwriting and own music for many years. Jack Jones (Irwin Thomas) whom I kinda knew years ago through the music industry had this immensely wonderful voice singing songs I believe you wrote. I hope you never give up writing awesome songs, southern sons was one of my favourite band.. How awesome to come across this video like a blast form the past :) . Peace and love from Auckland!
I have literally been waiting over 20 years to hear this. I only re-discovered it today. I recorded it when it was originally on the telly, and then accidentally recorded over it. Over the years I have searched UA-cam in the hope of finding it, but never did....until today. I still remembered how the song went in my head, and it's awesome to hear it again properly....thanks heaps!
Holy crap! What a chord progression and tonal center to smash those vocals over. Great work Phil! How I wish this made it onto one of the albums. Only recently discovered you guys a few months ago(even though I had heard Hearts In Danger before when I was younger) and Irwin is now by far one of my favorite vocalists. Your song writing skills are also amazing Phil :) Thanks so much for sharing this!
Brilliant song Phil... wow! An absolutely phenomenal performance by Irwin Thomas (Jack Jones)... wow! Wish you guys (Southern Sons) had released this song on an album. Very powerful lyrics, vocally delivered by Irwin (Jack), in the way we all know he can. Flawless! Thanks Phil for uploading this and Trevor for supplying it.
This should be re released. I would buy this if you recorded as performed here. Do it Phil! You won't regret it. I would help raise funds if needed to have you guys record this and put it on iTunes and promote it.
I do have a demo of it around here somewhere but the video above is a far better rendition. It's just one of those things I guess. This video is the best version of a song that was only sung twice in its life apart from the rehearsals for those 2 versions. This is the only time the song was sung in front of an audience. But how fortunate that this version actually exists.
So hauntingly beautiful...like others, I remember first hearing this song at Carols and have long since searched for it. Jones has such a powerful voice and the lyrics are sublime. Why is this not on iTunes already ?
Here again 24 Dec 2018. Still the best carols performance to this day. I’ll buy a copy of demo you made if you still have it! Honestly you’d have many people wanting a copy of it if you made it available.
I went to the Richard Marx concert a few years ago in Melbourne and Irwin sang a few tunes absolutely incredible. I wish he gets a chance to sing a whole song this time..
And maybe a cheeky guitar track too? 😉 Honestly, your work has been an inspiration to me, as has Irwin's, along with so many awesome Aussie artists. How lucky we are to have grown up here?!?
Hey Phil, another any chance you've got this song recorded in studio? Would love to be able to purchase it as the quality of the videos audio ain't great. Cheers
I wish! We never recorded it actually. We did a rough demo at my place and that was it. Jack sang it on the demo then once at rehearsal and then once that show. One of the most naturally gifted and talented musicians I've ever known.
Phil Buckle Thanks for the reply Phil. Yeah, wow he's surely gifted! I've always kept Southern Sons music on my phone and in car. Some of Australia's best rock music and rock bands ever! You guys were all phenomenal musicians in your own right but together you brought an amazing sound. JJ, Irwin Thomas is one of my all time inspirations, musically and vocally. God Bless ya Phil and the rest of the guys including Irwin. I hope you're all doing well in life...your music echoes on still even after all these years.
Hi Phil, I was just wondering why you weren't involved with the recent Southern Sons reunion tour? It didn't seem right that you weren't there - you were the architect of the Sons and your songwriting prowess was all over it. It looked especially strange to see the promo poster with original album cover with you edited out of it! Just wondering. Also, what are you up to these days?
Ha ha....that poster with me omitted was a laugh! In regard to why I did not perform.....well...it sounds a bit trite to say "I was busy" but there you have it. I have been working on my own album since September 2018. So when I got the call to do the tour I was deep into a whole other world and completely obsessed with writing and recording. I am now preparing the songs for mixing and mastering so it won't be long before I release. So you will soon find out what I have been up to!
Just unreal please come back and make every one happy again U are truly blessed 💝
For those who requested the lyrics, they are now in the info section under the video.
Thank you so much! It's such a beautiful song, I can't believe it wasn't ever recorded or performed further.
Had a crack at it Phil, sound quality is crap as just recorded it on my phone, but I thought I'd link it.

What a voice and what a song. Sure beats the drivel we’re being fed today.
What a stunningly beautiful song! Love how you and Jack bounce off each other in this performance and he is so effortless with his vocal range.
