Just a quick note on the quality of the ninja fight video clips. This is from a New York Times video that is surprisingly low quality, so sadly this is the best I had to work with. In general you will see a lot of repeating footage due to the lack of promo materials to work with.
I will be doing a more in-depth video on John Wick: Chapter 3 when it releases on blu-ray.

I know that I’m months late to this, and that I should rewatch the previous films. I watched the third film just yesterday, and I’d like to share my thoughts. I don’t want to come off as an armchair director, I’m confident that I couldn’t make something as large as these films but hindsight is 20/20. As someone who has grown up in the shaky cam era, I’m amazed with these films for the most part. It’s just that I believe that the John Wick franchise has proven something. Has established a president that makes more realistic action films viable. That movies that receive a lot of effort can, and will be worth it. It’s a combination of the more devoted martial arts films that are normally straight to video, or from the east, can mesh with high budget and set pieces. That they work on a scale that I haven’t seen before. I have few complaints about John Wick 3, and most of the reasoning behind them tells a story. Most of them are rather petty, but they stand out so much because the movie does realism so well. First the horse kills, is John Wick some sort of Doctor Doolittle? My second complaint comes from the Casablanca fight scenes. While it’s incredible on a technical level, it consisted of nameless and faceless mobs of goons getting gunned down for a long amount of time. It just reminded me of the mindless action of the 80’s, even if it was done in an impressive fashion. Third, John Wick’s inhuman stamina. At the end of the third film, John has been fighting intensely for about a week straight. Yet at the end he never seems to run out of breath or even sweat all that much. My last complaint is about the showdown in the Continental NY branch. The armor those troops wear is unreal. They take tens of shorts and never even seem to stagger or get pushed around. Only the rifle and shotgun had any real effect.
Most of these complaints only exist because of how devoted the film is to being realistic. I was honestly ecstatic at the underwater scene. I don’t believe that I’ve ever seen that particular misconception addressed before, and it was glorious.
All this being said, I’m worried about the direction of the franchise. Parabellum was more of a 2.5 than a proper sequel, and the directors seem to have fallen into the escalation trap of Hollywood films. The same trap the caught the Transformers films, and the Fast and Furious franchise.
I thought I recognized that guy from The Raid. The first knife fight scene gave off the same vibes as that film. I also recognized that John Wick wasn’t as good as an unarmed fighter, or when facing unarmed opponents. Of course it’s probably due to Keanu’s own abilities, but it would be cool if that was made a canon part of his fighting styles.
I’ll finish up by saying that I agree with your worry about the films. Parabellum really pushed the suspension of disbelief with a lot of things, and the set up for a sequel seems like a red flag for me. An optimistic take on it would say that the sequel could be an opportunity to have John Wick be more emotional. More angry and passionate, and less the cold precision of a professional only doing business.

I do have a valid response for 4:12 - if you remember, Zero's students are made to hold back because Zero wants to be the one to kill John Wick. His students, much like Zero, idolise John and see their fight as a sparring session. They're not trying to kill John. That's why John spares them at the end of their fight ("Be seeing you"), because they have a mutual, professional respect for each other. It's incredibly strange, but it's really, really interesting. It's not necessarily that they have to use mental gymnastics to convince the audience that Keanu Reeves to win, it's that they know how best to create more dynamic action scenes where characters don't always have an innate advantage.
Take the motorcycle fight. John can't park the bike and fight them hand-to-hand, he has to outsmart them. The giant guy at the start is too strong for John, which is why he has to use a heavy book. Hell, Zero almost kills him by the end of the second act.

I agree. I feel like the 2 vs 1 fight between Wick and Zero's students was very cleverly written. The lines addressing that Wick is now slower due to being five years retired, and their shared reverence for him nonetheless were not only comical, but helped me to instantly raise my suspension of disbelief and therefore made it easier to sell the choreography and make me believe that Keanu Reeves could hold his own against Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif Rahman (who are obviously much more physically adept).
Honestly, I felt like this fight scene and the Tony Jaa + Iko Uwais vs Scott Adkins fight in Triple Threat have effectively raised the bar for 2 vs 1 fights for the first time since the first Raid movie in 2011!

Personally by fully fledging themselves to this almost comic-book/Graphic Novel type of world in my opinion allows for the more violently absurd action set pieces to be right at home with this world they've constructed. Whereas the original made a lot of these crime syndicates seem like the underbelly of a believable and grounded reality, the action actually compliments it, as it too isn't to wildly out of porportion with being similarly grounded. When this franchise decided to be more ambitious with its set peices it equally expands the lore, and skillset of its hero to the point of being to much for your suspension of disbelief to handle, but by making it more fantastical and maybe a little bit sillier still makes for everything to have a consistent tone. I adore these films, and we finally have a consistently reliable franchise to bring up when it comes to action cinema here in the U.S.

John Wick uses a combination of BJJ and JKD techniques, which in real life is highly effective. He goes for his opponents ''weak spots'' like groin, throat, eardrums, eyes. He uses grappling and chocking techniques, taking advantange of his superior size and strenght. He uses an improvised weapon, his belt to counter their knifes.
All this flashy kicking, spinning and shit, you see in The Raid or other martial arts movies,is great to watch but in a real fight, completely useless and even puts you in danger.
And that's what makes the John Wick series so unique, despite beeing an action movie and supension of disbelief and all, they keep a degree of realism.
You see it in the shooting,he has to reload,he goes for headshots etc. he doesn't just go John Woo/unlimited ammo style or Chuck Norris-style, firing from the hip on his enemies.

Love ya, Rossatron, but I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. I agree that the acting left something to be desired, and yes, Reeves had to work a lot harder to keep up when he was fighting zero and his ninjas, but to me, leaning more into the fantastical side of the world really worked for the action. And I also respectfully disagree with you viewing Wick ending where he started as a criticism. All three Wick's have a unique feel, unique symbolism, and somewhat unique color scheme. But without getting into all that, I can say that the first was about Vengeance, the second Decisions/Actions, and the third about Punishment. In the logic of the world, Wick was justified for his actions in the first film, and when he finished in the end he was able to walk away again. This was a win. In the second, we learn he chose to make a deal with Santino, despite knowing the consequences. He chose to kill Santino in the hotel. He had made a deal with the devil, he doesn't get to break the rules of heaven (killing on the continental grounds) because he's paying what he agreed to. He loses in the second film, and it's all his fault. The third film, he's being punished for his actions: he loses the continental, he's against every assassin in the organization, he loses morpheus, he loses his home (the place that trained him), he gets branded, he has to cut off his own finger to make amends, and he probably gets hurt more in this film in combat than the last two. Even after the last fight scene, when you think he's finally done, Winston shoots him off of the roof. Him ending where he started is kind of the point, he's received his punishment and can now resume handing people their's. So again, I love your videos, they taught me a lot about action cinema over the years, but I have to disagree on this one.

Absolution crossed my mind, as he seems like he and the Bowery king look like they mean to bring an end to the high table, truly ending the past that John had spent 5 years trying to escape. But then again, he seems to have stopped fighting for the memory of his wife and John, the widower. He seems like he's fighting because he feels betrayal/angry for what they did to him, not what they did to his normal life. So again, I'm unsure. But I believe the next one will at least touch on rise/fall, both of John and the high table that has it's grip on everything. Winston himself said that not even the high table could defeat their own assassins in New York, and the Bowery King always believed himself above the high table. He even seemed to be preparing for a war in the second film.

I think these are all fair points, though I think people are taking my criticisms a little too much toward me not liking the film (which isnt at all the case). In terms of the film being about punishment, that's fair, though I think the first was also about that. This felt more to me a film about whether he even deserves redemption, with all he has done.
And I still stand by he doesn't particularly develop even by getting his brand and not being allowed to return "home" and losing his finger to the elder. These things were based on "mythology" introduced in the third film and lost in the third film, so since the second film he hasn't particularly changed as a character.
I have no issue with where they are taking the character, but I certainly ended it seeing that John is still being hunted, still ex-communicado (in effect), and relying on the help of a NY-based figure to support his fight for survival/vengeance.
Does it need any more depth than has been given? Perhaps not, but if they want to keep it going for another film, personally I would need more than just set pieces to keep me fully hooked. That said, i still say here and in the video, that I loved the film. It's the weakest for me, but it's still better than almost all recent American action films. But where the other two for me were five star films, this was a very respectable four stars.

I totally agree that the two guys from The Raid films were having to pull their punches somewhat. There was one particular bit where Keanu was grappling with Yayan and I just thought back to him as Mad Dog in The Raid and how he'd have punched and kicked Keanu half a dozen times in a similar grapple if Keanu were able to fight with the same level of skill as Iko Uwais. Those fight scenes had to be lowered to Reeves' level of skill in a choreographed fight scene (which is still way higher than any other Hollywood actor I can think of) but frankly it's only really noticeable to people who have seen those same actors going up against people with their own level of skill.
This isn't a criticism of the movie though because it is a fantastic action film. Personally I liked it a lot more than 2. Maybe I'll have to have a rewatch.

I don't necessarily agree with your opinion regarding the fight with the raid actors. He does win the fight, but he's on the defensive almost the entire time. Also, I got the sense that the guys he was fighting were going out of their way to not kill him, whether out of respect or because their boss ordered them not to.
I think wick's in-universe superpower is endurance. how many times has he been run over by a car and been almost no worse for wear? and after the two on one fight, it's only wick who still has the energy to get to his feet. It's not that he's the most skilled, or even the deadliest fighter. He just outlasts everyone else. And the final scene really just takes it to another level. Wick is not the god of war in this universe- he's the god of vengeance, and nothing can stop him until he's satisfied.
Also, if I were a betting man, I'd say the casablanca fight scene was a screen-test for a halle berry focused spin-off.

I can't get over the lengths they went, action-wise, to make this movie. I think everyone going to see this film knows what they want from a John Wick film, and the filmmakers themselves know what the audience wants. And boy, do they deliver with this one. It is an outlandish world they live in yes, but I love how they've expanded the world John and the assassins live in the past 3 movies. I never once felt like John Wick was weaker in hand-to-hand combat in any of the films. I always got the sense that he tried to use the advantages he had available to him. When he fought with Cassian, it felt like they were equal in strength and speed, and John was trying to just out-skill him, against Ares, he leveraged his greater physical strength. In the 3rd film, the first fight is against someone much bigger and stronger than him, so he swaps to using his speed and his surroundings. Likewise, against the Shinobi and Zero, it felt like he knew he was outmatched with speed, so he slows the pace of the fight down by leveraging his strength.

I think Keanu and Chad are aware of his limitations in physicality so they employ their fantastical worldbuilding right into Wicks characterization : A man who just does not stop.
John's endurance is beyond superhuman. The film-makers cleverly manipulate our limits of believability through narrative choices.
*Minor spoilers for chapter 3 below*
Starting where the sequel had left off, John is already battered, on the run for several hours, has not had time to heal the recent gunshot wounds and nowhere safe to rest as every other man is out for his head.
From this point on, the only rest he gets is on the way to Casablanca and passing out after walking for presumably a fucklot of hours in a desert.
Even after all of that, he has the verve to face off against a small army of lethal ninjas.

I actually agree with many of the points you've made here. Keanu shines during the gunfight scenes, but I agree that in this movie especially in the final hand to hand fights, he is being carried heavily throughout. However I still consider those fights very good and well choreographed. It's clear that Keanu is giving everything he's got within these scenes as well and at times is able to demonstrate a burst of speed and quickness he showed with ease during the Matrix films.. but that was 20 years ago. Multiple injuries over the years and just the fact that he's in his 50's could only be hidden to a certain extent. He doesn't run like he used to, he can't move like he did before, however Keanu can still pull off an effective fight without the use of ridiculous quick cuts and trickery which I appreciate. I actually liked the fact that this is even addressed in the movie during the 2nd to last fight (the 2 on 1) .. they kick the crap out of Wick at first, then one of the assassins says "He's gotten slower" .. then the other responds "yeah but he's still, John Wick"

The third movie ends with something of a cliffhanger, which at once I want to see, and want to not see, because I don't feel like they can go much further in terms of character. Which, btw, I think is what holds it together throughout all the fight scenes. If we didn't care about Winston, we wouldn't have rooted for Wick to take a stand at the Continental. Now all that's left is wrap things up between John, Winston, the Bowery King, and the Adjudicator. Notably, he didn't kill the Raid guys, so they can still come back.

  • @gojira387
    @gojira387 5 років тому +18

Chapter 3 has great action set pieces but yes it is noticeably lacking when it comes to "story."
Did anyone else catch the homage to The Good, The Bad and The Ugly?
While it was a welcome nod to the legacy that the filmmakers are trying to live up to, it also highlights their short comings.
The Man With No Name practically invented the concept of the absurdly over-capable hero in cinema, seemingly invincible in combat, infallible in aim & three steps ahead of every opponent. Yet, Fistful of Dollars has him beaten within an inch of his life because of one mistake, For a Few Dollars More shows his skills & wits matched by Col. Mortimer, TGTB&TU has him almost die in the desert at the hands Tuco.
While John Wick has his vulnerable moments, they have more to do with what has to be his physical exhaustion at this point. While Rossatron and others have pointed out in the previous entries how Wick often starts a fight as the excellence of execution, the longer the fight goes on the more vulnerable Wick becomes as fatigue and unexpected turns grow more dire. This time, Wick never seemed particularly vulnerable, it seemed more like Wick simply had to outlast his opponents and let them exhaust themselves trying to chip away at his infinite health bar. Whether that is a flaw of the film or just a perception from the audience that's now in on the magic act, is too early to say.
Sadly also as the films have become more fantastic, they have also lost touch with a humanity to ground them. They may never be able to repeat the emotional hook of the first film but now they don't even seem to be trying, so John Wick becomes more OP and with less & less of a relate-able humanity to connect with the audience.
    Or maybe that's just me.
If you read this far, Thank You for Reading.

Like Rosatron said, the movie really did need a Feriosa type character.

@@ericellsworth9852 I don't know about "The most important thing" but in this case as they pile on so much eccentricity & fantastical worldbuilding, that empathy that invests the audience into the main character no matter how absurd the situation around him is being lost and that leads to boredom with the franchise and then failure.

Now here me out guys. John Wick Time Travels back in time to Civil War, fighting time traveling nazi morlocks, then astral projects to Barsoom, fighting Tharks and Therns. Then after becoming Warlord of Mars, comes back in the 2000's to orchestrate his younger self's escape from organized crime and meeting Helen.
    Boom.

Chad has stated that most people are under the table but not just as assassins. He said in an interview that 2/3rds of New York know about the high table and the underground but not all of them are assassins they do other things like the girls who simply do paperwork.

I never found the plot or character development to be all that interesting in this series so all I really cared for was just enough to justify the wildly entertaining action. Chapter 3 might very well be the best in terms of pure action. Both in originality and as a tribute to preceding actions films (e.g. The Villainess). This is also the first John Wick film I've seen in theaters and based on box office return, I'm not the only one. It's already somehow surpassing Endgame....

I agree with your review wholeheartedly. At the end of the film, I was left feeling that plot-wise the film hadn't accomplished much, like you said, John is right back where he was, but that doesn't mean I didn't get my money's worth. It was like watching a ballet of gun-fu. I do hope they end the series on a high note, rather than milk it until they make a bad end and stop there. Not many series, if any, made more than three films and had them all be as great as each other.

Amazing movie. One little thing... one of the great things about John wick is that every move matters and is a groundbreaking addition to the overall plot. There are NO plot device, just components. Like in the previous films, even one bit of dialogue could potentially be vital to the whole plot later. What John wick 3 lacks is that it had an entire fight scene and set piece in casablanca over shooting a dog in a bulletproof vest. This had no later consequences was not mentioned again was just merely... there. And of course, it’s always great to get John wick action wherever we can get it, but I just feel like this amazing scene would have been even better with a little more substance to it. I still hold out faith that this was all a setup for Sofia to join Operation “I’m pissed” against the high table in John wick 4 and kick ass with a purpose. Feel free to debate or discuss in the replies⬇️

Excellent analysis as always. I agree that it's probably the weakest in terms of narrative, plot and characters, but it sure was a hell of a lot of fun on the big screen. I'll still go see a 4th one if they make it. I'm glad you brought up the point about the fight scene with the guys from The Raid films. That was probably the weakest of all the fight scenes, just because you could tell they were holding back.

Loved the pure unrestrained pace and tempo of the action in chapter 3 but did find some of the set pieces a little too long and could have been shortened a bit. Yep I do agree the on the second film being the best of the trilogy - the action still felt grounded and nicely paced.

As for the shinobi ninja characters, they are holding back even in-context of the film. There was like 3 times where they had Wick at knifepoint and backed off. Wick only won because they didn't want to kill Wick.
