Okay I never make comments but this (and the 'How to transport a mattress safely on top of any car or suv') video deserves it! Saved me a bunch of $$$ as I was about to rent a cargo van. I bought the same straps from Harbor Freight, strapped down my queen Casper mattress onto my Honda Fit, and successfully drove it from the Bay Area to Orange County. I used 4 ratchet straps just to be extra secure and put all 4 through the car doors rather than the window. I did not use any cardboard to make it rigid and it did just fine - though, it did seem to create a 'hump' at the front due to the sides being more tense/squished down than the middle while driving against the pressure of the wind. The mattress felt very secure, and at some points I had forgotten I had a mattress on my roof and was pushing 80mph, though on average going about 70-75mph the whole way. Excellent video!
I just drove from Dallas to Phoenix going average 65-75 mph with a full size mattress. I had no issues driving other than the tear resistant mattress bag I got from amazon got destroyed. The cardboard under the straps got chewed up as well by the wind but it helped having it under the wratcheting handle. Overall just like he said, I was able to safely transport my mattress thanks to this video! Thank you Sleepy Sal!!!!
Thank you! I had never even heard of a rachet trap before watching this video. I never considered myself handy at all. I watched this video in preparation for bringing home a mattress on top of my honda accord. I followed the instructions given and the set up and ride were smooth and perfect!
This was super helpful - thank you! Just bought ratchet straps now. based on your advice! Also, in case anyone's wondering where to get mattress bags - I checked at my local hardware/automotive store and they didn't really have anything suitable. Their tarps weren't wonderful and they were really expensive. So I went to a furniture store where they sell mattresses and asked their customer service desk if they would sell me a plain plastic mattress bag - they were happy to do so, for $10! for a Queen size one (Not bad considering the tarps I was looking at were way more expensive than that.)
I want to give away my mattress before moving next month (it's too soft for me) but as backup plan I wondered how I could strap a mattress on the roof without breaking the plastic wind diverters coming down over the windows on my vehicle. Duh, just open the door and put the straps inside the door frame instead of through the windows! Perfect, thanks for explicitly mentioning this. God the most obvious solutions can evade us when it's not something we've done before.
Thanks Sal, was able to safely transport my new matress a couple o miles on the trusty Volvo. The video was clear, descriptive, as alway Sal. Cheers, Edo
Its is interesting, I had purchased those same racheting straps at Harbor Freight today before watching the video...so I was on the right track but watching this video gave me confidence. Thank you.
Just commented on your other video about how helpful it was, this one is even more helpful! I’ve gotta move a squidgy mattress that came in a box and there will be no space in my car! Cardboard on top is a good tip cheer Sal :)
that's a pretty good look. one of the sickest mods ive seen. i think i'll just strap a mattress on top of my car permanently. i heard it increases your car's... comfort.
The cardboard at the leading edge of the mattress is to help keep the mattress pressed down and flat. With straps alone, the wind pressure can get under the mattress and bend it back over the straps and flippingin the wind. If that happens, you will get pulled over by police and ticketed for having an unsecured load.
I for one was not blessed with a pickup truck and only use my daily yaris sedan. Loaded a twin size bulky folding bed with 3 inch foam to cover the roof and 2 ratchet straps worked as it shoud.
Yes but I feel like the ratchet straps are more secure. The strapping is wound around and is more secure than just a spring loaded cam with a friction grip on one thickness of straping just doesn't give me as much comfort at the ratchet straps.
Card board helps keep even pressure. It helps to hold down a floppy mattress. It also protects the mattress from the straps, bitting into the mattress. You can do without the cardboard, .but make sure the straps are tight
My SUV (a Toyota RAV4) has a top rack :/ i just want to strap the spring mattress last time i tried moving a mattress it kept lifting off when driving over 35 mph plus the straps kept making lots of noise, what could i have done wrong? I strapped the mattress just around the rack, would it be better through the window? Use a wood/cardboard piece to go both over and under the mattress? Any video on how to do so on a SUV with roof rack? Also... this is to move a mattress going on Highway for about 250 miles... thanks for the instructional video :D
@@EvanGlobe Bad idea to strap to top racks. I did that and lost a mattress on the freeway. Those racks aren't made for sustaining the loads generated by a mattress at freeway speeds. In my case, it ripped the racks off the car. This was way back in the 90's but racks haven't changed.
Hey Sleep Sal I am thinking about transporting my queen size mattress on the roof of my Chrysler Pacifica. I will be driving from South Florida to Colorado. I have a roof rack on it. If I tie down with ratchet straps do you think it will be fine for the entire trip?
I have a bobopedic mattress so it’s quite more bendy and soft. Any tips regarding this type of mattress since it’s less firm? It will be going 847miles
Put a large stiff cardboard over the entire mattress before strapping it down. The cardboard will keep the mattress from lifting in the wind. If your mattress is a memory foam mattress, you can simply fold it in half, tape, or tie it up, then put it inside your vehicle.
Hi Sal. I can get some still boxed 28-foot heavy duty ratchet straps cheap to move a bed this Sunday, 1/1/20. Since you said only 15-foot long straps are needed to go around a queen mattress & box spring, would I just be able to double wrap the 28-foot ones around my full mattress? I won’t have a box spring with it. Tks
Garbage Freight racket straps are only good for wrapping Christmas gift boxes . Christmas ribbon is is just as thick their webb . I would not secure a marshmallow in place with these straps .
I have tried 100s of different ratchet straps through the years. I have found straps that are much worse and many that are much better. These straps used in this video are in fact decent straps for the money. If kept from rusting and used properly they can last for many repeated uses and will not fail. I have used these particular straps at least 1000 times without having a single failure.

When you drove around and demonstrated, that sold me right there!!! It's nice to see you put it together, and after test it.

Good timing!
This is the best video out there explaining how to strap a mattress to a car rooftop.
Okay seriously that was a top notch how-to. Thank you immensely

seems legit.
Thank you so much! I’m going to try to move a full size on thanksgiving :)
@John Becker no I wasn’t able to lift up the whole full size mattress on top of my car by myself , I just paid for movers.
Very helpful, save me 2 cross bar that never works on my SEDAN when you transport mattress or few plywood on rooftop
Glad it helped
This worked for me, thanks!
You're welcome!
Thank you sir
I gotta move a mattress to another state. Would this be safe on the highway?
Thanks I was thinking about renting a U-Haul but I’m on a budget so I think I can this alone
Thanks Sal, Freight harbour is now closed so will grab a pack at home depot. Will try to grab a mattress tonight and do a freeway!
is it all the same on a roof rack? rather than directly on car?
Yes
Could someone explain again what the cardboard was for?
The cardboard at the leading edge of the mattress is to help keep the mattress pressed down and flat. With straps alone, the wind pressure can get under the mattress and bend it back over the straps and flippingin the wind. will this work with a twin memory foam?
What if I don't have cardboard ? Also which side should I put down ? I have a pillowtop
Put the softest side down.
Have you ever used a cam buckle strap?
Yes but I feel like the ratchet straps are more secure. The strapping is wound around and is more secure than just a spring loaded cam with a friction grip on one thickness of straping just doesn't give me as much comfort at the ratchet straps.
Hey Sleepy sal. I need to travel from Florida to Boston. Do you think it's legal to do this ??
Yes, all the laws I am familiar with require the load to be secure.

Anyone know what the top speed recommended would be?
Drive the legal speed limit and you should be fine.
What is the brand of the straps? I want to buy one

Can you travel 600 miles on highway like this ?? Planning to do Canada this weekend
Distance doesn't matter. Be cautious for inclement weather. Getting caught in the rain would not be good.

Can I do this for moving a couch??
Moving couches on the roof of your vehicle has not been tested. It is not recommended. Could be dangerous.
Awesome. Gotta pick up a full on top of suv. Kinda nervous. Wish me luck.
Gotta do this soon too. Did it work?
I have a sun roof is it still safe ?
Hi, you can lay a mattress on top of a sunroof.
Would this work for a king mattress?
This it’s so helpful!!
Does this work with a king size?
Not recommend for king size mattress
I have to transport a twin mattress on my camry but i have ill be driving on the freeway for about two and half hours, is it safe?
Just drive slow! It’ll take a long time, I drove 50 miles on the highway with my mattress, tie it down really good. You should be fine.
Thank you!
Can you go on the highway?
Sure, follow all speed limits.
Is this safe for cross country though? Over 1k miles
Follow the instructions and you can go the legal speed limits on any road. Check the load periodically to make sure it is secure.
I have a purple mattress so I'm kinda scared cuz its kinda different from other mattresses
