Airfix Hurricane Mk.1 - Build With Me! Part 1 - Model Kit Basics & Cockpit Construction

  • The Hawker Hurricane was a fighter aircraft that saw service with the RAF during the Second World War. In this video I complete a long-format build of the Hawker Hurricane Mk.1 Plastic model kit in 1/72 scale.
The version I have here is from the Starter Set (or "gift set" as they are sometimes called) which comes with some small pots of paint, a brush and some cement. The perfect start for a beginner!
The aim of this series is to give you the chance to quite literally "build with me" - so if you have this kit and want to give it a go, this is the perfect video for you!
Alternatively, if you are a beginner, there are lots of helpful, simple and easy techniques that can be found in this series - so definitely worth a watch!
In this first part of the series I take a look at the contents of the kit, explore the various beginner techniques, tools and skills you might need, as well as construct the interior cockpit area and paint the pilot figure!
Make sure you subscribe so that you don't miss the next episode in the series where I complete the general construction of the model . . Stay tuned for that!
Get your Airfix Starter Set Hurricane Mk.1 here: amzn.to/3n6jq8O
Another (non starter set) Hurricane: amzn.to/3yO1rWP
Apologies if there are any editing errors in the video - I recorded this series as I build the model so there were very long takes and lots of footage to edit. The activity in this video took about 2 hours which was then edited to less than an hour - still quite a sizeable amount of work (and the perfect chance for errors to slip in)!
The audio quality in this series is known to be slightly lower than my normal videos due to the use of the in-built microphone in my camera - the use of my "good" mic would be very difficult to do as it isn't compatible with the camera. This is an area I'm looking at improving and overcoming in the future

@@ModelMinutes may I suggest a similar video on tools Matt? Basically so a beginner can make the most of their first model. I know you talk about tools in this video but people might skip it if they don't want a Hurricane. A starter set with just a brush and paints doesn't cover things like snips, tweezers, glue etc so it's good to see you did. I know you /were/ happy with your first model made many years ago but what if you're /not/ as happy with it? That might put you off modelling when really you want the reverse to happen. In short a 'Tools Starter Set'. Also you mentioned tools being available in hobby shops but what if the model is an impulse purchase in another outlet like a museum? They may not sell tools.

I tend to paint my pilots mostly the same, except I use 62 (leather) on the boots, gloves, lifejacket and flying helmet and I use 80 (chocolate) to paint the jacket area, it does tend to give a bit of contrast against the RAF blue.

This is going to be very useful to me since I have this very same kit. It is a bit unusual Airfix is suggesting putting the pilot into the cockpit at the end of the build these days; many years ago when I was building Airfix aircraft kits he went in before you buttoned up the fuselage altogether; I'm sure there is a good reason for it. Using vinegar in the water when washing the parts before assembly is a new one to me, and I've been in this hobby for over 40 years now!

I use Revell contactor pro. on wargaming minis. That long needle applicator, gets in where ever you need it to go. But Tamiya extra thin on models. as that brush gives you pinpoint coverage and it s so much easier to control the quantity of glue.

This model is totally different to anyof the Airfix models I built in the early 60's ,a lot easier in fact, I was told in the instructions to paint detail parts and figures on the sprue rather than to wait until I'd part built it, to be honest , it was simpler in the long run, re: the pilot figure the pilot would often wear a sheeps leather jacket with a lambs wool collar which was white/cream, also the "flotation device# or Mae West"as it was also known(after the american actress of ample proportions...) was'nt always yellow as its colour was changed during the war due inbelevably to several aircrew and seamen being pulled underwater by a humingous Squid photgraphs have been published of sucker marks strtching fromone side of the body to t'other which means(assuming the unfortunate in question was a 6 footer )that according to the photograph that the sucker was (complete with central swivel hook from side to side ) ALEAST) a yard wide, apparently according to the Boffins of the day the large(!!) deep sea squid came to the surface to investigate all the racket of gunfire and have been recorded as having hoiked surviviors out of life boats who where wearing yellow Mae WestsI beieve the ch ange of colour was quite early in the war, might be worth a bit of reading ro check it out (wikipedia!)my original sources where from my dad and and some of his pals, all of whom joined up BEFORE the war started in September 39from places as diverse as Britain South Africa and Rhodesia, he was what was known then as a rigger, nowadays as an "airframe technician" he served from 39 to 69 an from 69 tothe early 70's as an instructor at R.A.F. Halton and finally at R.A.F. Those toy acrylic paint pots look truly horrible. Like the paints that come with those cheap "paint by numbers" sets. I can remember when Airfix had their own enamel paint range. It came in little glass bottles with a metal screw top. Using them made the whole place stink like an oil refinery. In those days all you could get were the Airfix bottles, Humbrol "tinlets" or artist's oil paints in tubes from the posh art shops.
