I was a Christian in my teens early twenties and I now consider religion as a "mind virus". I nearly went insane with all of the battle of faith and actual evidence. I finally let go of Christianity and my mind has never felt so free. I now can't believe I ever tried to convince myself that any of it was true and I am now happy with life and a very proud atheist.

I got to meet Seth when he came to my town. A TOTAL delight. Charming, beautiful, and above all, kind. His wife was SO COOL! I love her! I got to meet his stepdaughter, her boyfriend, Seth's poochies. It was a very, very good day. It's a treat to meet someone whom you admire, and crush on, and find that someone to be human. I will continue to harbor inappropriate thoughts about Seth, but mostly, I'll just be glad to have met him.

"You need to get out more. Have a little fun.
Oh, wait...."fun" is not logical and reasonable. Scratch that, lol!"
Again, you show your extreme ignorance. Have you ever met an actual scientist? Do you have any idea what they consider fun? Intellectuals tend to have fun by exercising their brains. Do you have any idea how many cool things can be done in a lab just for fun? Where do you get this idea that intellectuals are all work and no play? We are not brainless robots like religious sheep-drone god-slaves are. Unlike religious fanatics like you, intellectuals actually understand why the concept of fun is instinctual and an important part of any society regardless of the species. The more intelligent a species is, the more they play. We scientists have studied the concept of fun and understand it far better than people like you. Please get an education before posting again.

I've read (or listened) to all the books by Hitchens, Dawkins, Harris, and others, but to me Foundational Falsehoods of Creationism is the best. I've listened to Aron Ra narrate it 4 or 5 times and I'm always blown away by his knowledge of scripture (and how absurd it is) and of the genetics of evolution. Incredible work by an extremely learned man!

"And talk about what? The same ten things that atheists ALWAYS talk about?
      Expand your mind, imho...."
If you had any education at all or knew any intelligent people, then you would find out that atheists can talk about all kinds of things. In reality, it is religious fanatics like you who have very little to talk about due to your extreme ignorance of reality and science.

    • @sheepuff5999

***** And what do you think he should do, Mr. Intellectual? Rant and rave about Tumblr sludge like The Amazing Atheist does now? Do you want the evolutionary equivalent of Noam Chomsky (although that may be an overstatement) to give up all of his intellectual interests and devolve into another dime-a-dozen anti-SJW UA-camr?
He could do that. Easily. He could have famous UA-camr's like Sargon and Thunderf00t promote the shit out of him and have his name up with theirs in about a month. But it just so happens that he cares more about substantive videos and intellectual discussion than he does about selling out and getting as many of the large 15-34 year old male UA-cam demographic as he can with a bunch of anti-SJW bullshit.

12:45 min. I live in CA and one of the younger family members who lives in between San Jose (aka silicon valley) and San Francisco told me that their public school teacher said "Evolution is Just a Theory". I was just about bowled over. So, be aware that the creationists still exist and might be teaching your child.

I have been listening/watching to the Thinking Atheist for several years now. I left religion (christianity/catholicism in 1981), I live in Europe. After all this time: there is a world of difference between Europe (freethinkers - atheism etc) and the USA (freethinkers - atheism). The struggle of the freetinkers/atheists in the USA is so different from Europe. But still nice to listen to you.

Aron Ra makes me less Angry with my former self, for having been a pious believer.
I have went through confirmation for belief reasons and then made a 180 at some point where i have been confronted with methodoligical thinking and adopted doubt as a method.
I am still angry with religious people not being able to budge, to go away from those false presumptions. I wish i had the patientce of him discussing it over and over while staing calm and reasonable. It is really special to have someone so reasonable with the side of reason ^^

I believe... that some people NEED god. By this, I mean: those that cannot face an ending existence... fearing the oblivion that comes to the extent that their choice is religion or depression. There is also the fact that others need a 'holy' father: someone who gives them a sense of morals because their own compass is too far off.

    • @ThatGuy-fb1wy
      @ThatGuy-fb1wy 7 років тому +6

      +Dr Abraxis
I can understand people, including and especially children, with terminal illnesses needing to believe in god in order to keep up hopes, but anyone else who only needs god to keep them from committing crimes or getting depressed simply needs to be kept far away from people. I have never once been depressed as a result of the fact that the supernatural doesn't exist. I've been depressed because of legitimate reasons that impacted my life. Not believing in a god shouldn't have an impact on you when the god that never existed never had any affect on your life to begin with. Since god can't possibly have any actual affect on you, then the only left to blame for the depression is you. Thus, you are the only one capable of curing the depression.
That being said, coming to the realization that religion is complete bullshit and announcing it can have real effects on you if you're family is too blind, ignorant, brainwashed, indoctrinated, and uneducated to be humans and accept and love you. This is a known issue that plagues our society as it makes many young atheists live in fear and humiliation or face being abandoned by their family and community. Though there are organizations that help these young atheists, it costs money and manpower to help these young people. On top of that, too many young atheists are too afraid to come out of hiding because they are too afraid of the consequences. That is why schools should be able to intervene when children are abused by religion and educate them about recognizing the signs of religious abuse and how to get help and/or report such abuse. Any child that goes to a public school should be aware that they can get help when they are abused by religion. All schools should have to teach evolution and other basic science concepts regardless of school's location, affiliation, or style. No school should be allowed to teach the bible as anything more than fictional literature. Any school that does not conform will be boycotted so that no secular employer, organization, business, or school will recognize or accept any diploma or degree from them. Schools and colleges that do conform will continue to receive federal aid. This may seem radical, but it is just one way to begin repairing and preventing the damage to the educational system religion has inflicted upon us.
Lastly, the argument that some people need god is irrelevant to the debate between atheists and theists. The illusion of needing a god is created when someone makes the error of believing that there is a god without having any evidence to support their belief. The religious will tell you that you are programmed to need god, which goes against having free will. In reality, if you believe in a god, then you are essentially creating the need for a god. However, since both god and the need for god are illusions that have no real substance. They only give you the illusion that you are being helped by god. Though the events and experiences are real, their misunderstanding of reality leads them to erroneously confirm their illusion is real. What they fail to realize is that atheists can also be very successful in life, and we do it without the illusion of a divine being taking enough interest in our pathetic lives to help us when we are in need. Since both atheists and theists can be successful, then the illusion of needing god is proven as an illusion, and therefore shouldn't be entertained as a valid argument. Thus, the argument is irrelevant. So with that, I bid you farewell and have a nice day!

if someone only is moral because a they think the skyghost will punish them if they aren't they are mentally unstable and dangerous and belong in an asylum or prison and not into civilized society.
if all it takes for that person to chop up people is to realize there is no god they are a danger to others around them.

Seth and Aron are arguably my two favorite people (Matt Dillahunty belongs in this company too) as faces/voices for atheism/skepticism ... they are down to earth and honest and fair. I know there are more people worthy as well ... but I've learned SO much form "regular" folks (the heavy hitters like Hitch, Dawkins, Harris et. al. not withstanding) like this than in the many years of public education ... I very much look forward to Aron's book release
Thanks to all skeptics, freethinkers and scientists etc. who sacrifice and take huge risks to coherently and comprehensively lay out a thoughtful and logical case for truth and factual reality.

Kudos to Aron for opting out of the 'pure-bred' dog fad.. Purebred dogs (popular dogs of the cutest kind) are born with a number of genetic issues and are often mated with members of their family to maintain the appearance of the breed. Golden retrievers are a good example given that around 60% of them die of CANCER because of the lack of genetic diversity .... And I don't EVEN want to discuss Bulldogs.

One argument against creationism that I have not heard enough is this. If you believe that the earth is only 6 to 10 thousand years old, then you have to explain how all the animals, including all prehistoric animals and dinosaur species that we know of from the fossil record, lived, bred, died, deposited enough bones that some fossilized, spread over the world, and micro evolved from their base "kinds" to all variations we see in the fossil record in that short amount of time. What kind of ecology would that have been like? Can you imagine that many species sharing this earth in the numbers they would need to survive for several thousand years? Would there have been enough plants to sustain herbivores (especially if they were all herbivores before the mythical fall)? If micro evolution happened that quickly we would be able to see it within a human lifetime and we see little change over the thousands of years of written human history. Your assertion that the majority of fossils were deposited by the mythical flood in absurd ways only means that the variation of species, even within their own "kinds" had to happen in an even smaller span of time, either before or after the flood. It is absurd, and you're stuck, with "god did it with his magic" again. Or science and painstakingly collected human knowledge is right, your god doesn't exist, and your ancient myths are just myths. Which is more likely?

It doesn't make more sense with the "old Earth creationism". That requires more faith while "young earth" requires more conspiracy theories.

What about the facts of Co2 pollution? Do those facts not warrant a change in lifestyle consumption? Or do we pick and choose which facts we want to believe and why?
Not to mention the fact that religion and religiosity are evolutionary facts! Get it? Religion and religiosity are here because evolution saw fit to bestow them upon us!
But sure, I don't really have a problem with the idea that we are 'frisky dirt' and that some of us no longer need religion or religiosity .

I guess we could ignore Co2 pollution and necessary lifestyle changes if we thought scientists were lying..........

okay, a bit of a double standard seems to be at work here. To go after Christians when the dictionary definition of it is "one who professes belief in the teachings of Jesus Christ", while excusing feminist citing the dictionary definition doesn't quite fit. It is hard to accept that Aron is not capable of seeing this. In his own paraphrase of his words, it seems like "a deliberate distortion." The reason this comes up each time he speaks is, it brings into question his reasoning skills, which is critical to this series of discussions. Makes me question how honest, faithfully relating, and clear he is being in all these discussions with Creationist. Trust is easily lost, and difficult to reestablish.

We do not know the truth about the real world, we only have approximate models for how it behaves.
Further, many in thee comments are operating under the mistraken pre-scientific impression that there actually is such a thing as Platonically idealized truth.
If there’s one thing we can be absolutely certain of, it’s that we can’t be absolutely certain of anything.
Even if CERN tomorrow announces confirmation of supersymmetry and the day after somebody takes their data and comes up with a slam-dunk Grand Unified Theory of Everything that harmoniously reconciles Quantum and Relativistic Mechanics and all the rest…
…we still won’t have any way of ruling out the possibility that we’re just a subroutine of a Matrix-style simulation operating in a “real” universe with physics radically different from the one we superficially find ourselves in.
And, of course, even if we did somehow, incomprehensibly, discover that to be a fact…well, how do we know that the Matrix super-universe isn’t itself but a passing dream of Alice’s Red King?
Truth can be an useful shorthand in many situations. I wouldn’t hesitate to say that it’s true that the Sun rises in the East, or that that blasted motherfucking orange-haired idiot is the current Resident of the White House.
But, ultimately, what we can be certain we don’t have is truth - and, instead, what we have are models / maps that are more or less useful. Even, of course, as some of those models are so useful that they are practically indistinguishable to us from Platonic idealized Truth.

It means that someone's in a snit because 1) many good people want their rejection of superstition to inform human rights causes in a woo-free world and 2) the critics of those people can't seem to help but knee-jerk about the caricatures and extremists on the front lines of social causes.
SJW is designed as a pejorative, a conversation-killer, a piece of trash tossed from the cheap seats. It's also clumsily dragged into unrelated conversations because the rabid anti-SJW horde can't seem to think about anything else.
This video is about creationism and evolution. And Aron, while far from perfect, has done more to advance the cause of rationalism than the majority of his (armchair) critics in sum.

It's the old Hammer-Problem all over again (If all you have got is a hammer every problem looks like a nail).
They are so obsessed with "SJWs" that whatever they see and do not like is labelled as that.
Five years ago it would have been Progressive, ten years ago "Liberal", 15-20 years ago Socialist, forty years ago "Commie"... The ones using it the most often do not even care about what it REALLY means and do not understand anything about the things their hated enemies really want to talk about or try to change...
