AronRa (www.aronra.com) has spoken on behalf of skepticism and freethought for many years, and his Magic Sandwich podcast has been heard by thousands across the globe.
Aron talks about his own journey, his studies on the "theory" of Evolution, his battles against the teaching of Creationism in public schools and more. Plus your questions and comments
2011 "I cant remember a time where politics was SO OVERTLY evangelical..."
-2020 hold my holy water
-2083 "Man who would have thought all this far-right religious fanaticism would eventually culminate in a literal fascist takeover."
We observe evolution daily, as theists evolve into rational people who no longer believe in ancient fairy tales.
Great statement. Love it. It couldn't happen fast enough.
Mike Public
That's not evolution. You're using the colloquial definition instead of the scientific definition.
+Paul T Sjordal I hope you got that it was a joke. please tell me you got that it was a joke. You didn't get that it was a joke did you?
@@tofu_golem that is evolution, are people's children carbon copies of them? No they're not. That's evolution. You see it every generation.
@@brethager3265 he wasn't talking about about people having children. He said that people changing their minds about theism and the individual shifting from theism to atheism is evolution. That's why Paul said that wasn't evolution, while it fits with the colloquial definition of just being something changing it doesnt fit with the scientific definition because the scientific definition doesnt deal with individual organisms over a short period of time, it deals with the species as a whole over large periods of time.
Seth & Aron are a dream to listen to.
Yes--they are both prizefighters for truth. 🥊
its the 21st century and people are still arguing about evolution. Ive never been religious but its amazing at the power religion has on some peoples minds.
The Scopes Trial was nearly 100 years ago, and the American public school system is _still_ fighting the same fight. In that time, the evidence _for_ Evolution by Natural Selection has _grown_ astronomically, but somehow the "powers that be" have still found success in claiming it's "controversial"...because the school board members in charge of curriculum (A) don't understand the Science, (B) don't understand the Constitution, and (C) don't _want_ to!
I'm not really shocked, I'm mean, we still have people trying to argue that the world is flat.
People don't suddenly quit doing drugs when it becomes clear they are bad .
People think that evolution is true because they're stupid. There is no evidence for evolution. The evidence for evolution hasn't grown astronomically. The opposite has occurred. The evidence for intelligent design has grown and we now know that evolution is impossible.
@@vesuvandoppelganger situation effing needed!
I just read what could quite possibly be the most hilarious creationist argument of all time. The entire fossil record is invalid because we can't prove that the fossils produced offspring. Oh god, I laughed so hard I cried. These threads can be so educational & AMUSING! Great show! I just love Aron!
+Cookie Nibz I had someone legitimately argue the following: on youtube "If dinosaurs are EXTINCT, then how did they evolve!? Evolutionists fail to understand that dead species CANNOT give birth!!" At long last, the achilles heel of evolution, laid bare...
+wolfumz lol! That's good stuff! Thanks so much sharing that story. We need more humor in today's world :)
I have a small fossil trilobite on my necklace and I've been told twice that it is fake because there is no such thing as prehistoric animals. Both arguments were, "if you have never seen it alive you cant be sure it existed." I asked both of them whether I could be sure that my great great great great great grandfather existed since neither me nor anybody in my recent family had ever seen him, not even a picture. One of them actually said no, that I cant be sure he existed, the other had to think then just said that it didnt matter because we know humans are real, but we've never seen a dinosaur.
"not young" "not flat" Earth Karenationist are petulant children. Just like the regular version...
Sounds like Kunt. He likes to use that one. "Awl yoo can prove is that it daayed!" I'm not sure he's an idiot, but he certainly thinks his followers are and he knows what motivates them. No fact exists in total isolation. If it died, then it once lived. It existed. If it was organic then it had to take in energy and likely excrete waste of some kind, as most (or possibly no) living organism is perfect. And so on and so forth. And that's only based on the fact that it's a fossilised something. Didn't even touch on morphology. Or the fact that for there to have been one fossil, there had to have been at least two of that species to create it.. Well, unless it is of a species that reproduces asexually by splitting down the middle. Which is fine for bacteria, but it's a real hassle for giraffes.
I found Aron Ra when I was about to take the last step out of my faith, I thought he was a meanie at first, but then I realized he was just being honest and Frank with the conclusions he came to.
Im interested in science, and I've even had athiests who are into philosophy claim science is a religion of mine. I obviously disagree, because I trust science to be valid only because I have no other valid option, I don't accept that its valid just because I want it to be.
While science is technically a field of philosophy it's definitely not a religion. Though I will say if a religion was ever to be founded that is completely backed by science and not cherry-picked but actual science let me know what the damn thing indicates a properly working Theory of Everything that incorporates time
@ Just some Guy… Exactly. Unfortunately… Science is a lot of Math. I love Math in that it Makes You Think… I Hate Math… in that I JUST CAN’T DO IT. I even understand some Physics. I know… it DOESN’T MAKE SENSE. Evolution is just Adaptation of your RNA. That’s where the Mutations Happen. It makes you either Survive…or Go Extinct. That’s all Evolution is. Science COMES FIRST. Science is based on Logic. It is based on Math… unfortunately when you just CAN’T DO IT. Science is based on Physics. Yes… there are Theories… like the Parallel Universe… but a lot of Scientific Theory is Eventually PROVEN. There is Schrodinger’s Cat. Schrodinger’s Cat is both being ALIVE… and DEAD at the SAME TIME. A lot of people think it’s a Breed. They ask me How and or if they can Get One. They ask me is it Domestic… or is it one like the Serval… one of the Honorary Big Cats or one of the Big Cats. It’s the Perfect Example… or Science. I HAVE… SEEN A GHOST… along with TWO OTHER PEOPLE at the SAME TIME. One of the Theories of the Parallel Universe is that when you die… you go to one of them. So goes Reincarnation. Why NOT? Science is Science… is Physics… is unfortunately.. Math… is Logic. It can all be Proven. And… this is the House that Jack Built.
Aron is the most badass Texas looking guy .
"God's invisible qualities have been clearly seen..."
Seems legit.
God is as make-believe as Papa Smurf.
The story AronRa told about the 13 year old kid who was shot dead for being a 'witch' broke my heart.
Out of all the pod casts I have watched (or rather heard) this has been the most interesting. Aron was an amazing guest to have and he certainly knows his stuff.
25:25 "They have no idea what evolution actually means."
The entire problem with most apologist arguments.
evolution as a word has little of no explanatory meaning, The Theory of Evolution..thats the best explanation according to the availablee evidence for the immense diversity of all lifeforms on earth......now i write it here i get why a religious person who is taught to NOT question religiously based stories and fables, does question ToE, it is in opposition of their fables.. And because they lack the tools to : think critically, research the validity of claims using several , objective sources and question what cant be shown to be until its shown to be.....Religiousbased "scientificresearch"and that sort of institutions are very good in appearing scientific, but lie, misrepresent, misquote or quote only the for their narrative relevant parts, explain and teach falsehoods to keep their followers ignorant of facts.
Pokephira They deliberately muddy the waters in favor of their beliefs.
They mostly do not want to know . Some have a living to lose and others a lifestyle they have commited everything too .
I knew what Chick tracts were as a christian, but I was a janitor for a long time and found them in stalls almost every week sometimes...
they felt stupid in context of my catholic beliefs, too.
I was a janitor at Oregon state department buildings.
Evolution is a fact and thats the official science answer.
The unofficial answer is santa did it. However the boogeyman could also be a prime suspect in some peoples minds.
I vote the boogie man
Damn straight, man. Santa has given us far more than Jesus ever did, and he doesn't threaten us with torture.
@@jamesallred1612 he only threatens to give us coal which I always wanted as a kid for part of my rock collection. My parents told me later that it sucked not being able to use Santa to get me to behave.

@@walkergarya oh, never mind then. I am also sorry for my jumping to conclusions. that was wrong of me.
Both of you fixed my mind, Seth and Aron, and Christopher, so I am looking forward to this interview.
AronRa-- I guess I've also been atheist for decades without ever realizing it.
I stopped going to church after graduating from college in 1962, & pretty much just stopped thinking much about religion. I did, however, get married in a lutheran church for asthetic purposes, mostly.
Now, 50 years later, I've started to realize I've been an atheist all along, thanks to my boyfriend,Matt Dillahunty, Seth & you. Keep up the good work.
Favorite part of the podcast 12:12 "...drugs helped although that was never my way... *loling*"
I just want to say one thing:
ATHEISM HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE EVOLUTION THEORY!
@Wirrling Thats probably because the theory itself implies a world where original sin just never existed.
it is by being open minded that we no longer believe in things that are completely ridiculous today but were considered true in the past. and i think what is meant by "Thinking" Atheist is that you should question your beliefs and think about them.
this is pure gold to my ears thanks. i'll be sticking around
Aron is a contradiction in many ways, what a brilliant mind.
You're all wrong. The flying spaghetti monster created the universe as we perceive it at 2.15PM last Tuesday. This is divine revelation, I have a special tea pot through which the FSM communicates with me.
Hail Bishop Ussher!
do you actually believe in a flying spaghetti monster? i think not and you could not find ten people on this planet whom do, therefore this analogy is a poor comparison to whether there is a creator or not. i know of no one whom would argue i favor of the spaghetti guy though i know many whom would argue in favor of a Creator. lets at least be rational in our statements.
+Bruce Paj The point is that both are (in general) on equally solid ground. There is a dissimilarity however, in that FSMID offers an explanation for why we see nothing supernatural.
If I tell you I believe in a blue god with infinite heads and arms (rather spaghetti-like) you would probably have a similar reaction. However I can show you a billion Hindus that accept it as obvious.
Bruce Paj Oh, i see... the truth is determined by a popularity contest?... then perhaps dog shit tastes great, I mean ten billion flies can't all be wrong, can they?
Absolutely funny. Funny thing is the flying spaghetti monster would be more believable than the bible.
Gotta love your two's conversations you should have him back on soon
I just heard a caller, whom I assume was Latino, speaking broken English with a North Carolinian accent!!
I love America!! Where else can you hear that?!
The Lightning Count The UK. I could give many examples, but I’ll just mention the boxer Henry Cooper, who was married to a woman from Italy, who had a strange Italian/Cockney accent.
"Every person knows God is real"
Except for those who don't, of course.
Here in Oz we are lucky in most ways but we still have to put up with the odd nut-job who trys to force us into not thinking
This was amazing to listen to. Just amazing.
Wow!! Thank You!! Thats Good Work Guys!! Cheers!!
Religious nuts who don't believe in Evolution should have a word with their Pope. He believes in Evolution.
Sort it out in your own church before taking it out here.
A lot of the worst think that The Catholic Church is Satan's Church, and that the Pope is his prophet. They would sooner listen to Pat Robertson.
It is foretold that the church would depart from truth at the end . So look we are at the end . evolution is an atheist lie there is no proof only atheist faith .
☛† (【✞ REPENT THE BEGINNING IS NEAR ✟】 )
THE CROSS OF JESUS IS THE SIMPLE TRUTH You're the ones believing unproven stories on faith. Darwin was Christian when he first gathered the _evidence_ that led him to formulate the hypothesis of Evolution, which only became a theory(the highest level of knowledge in science) after all efforts to disprove it failed and all new relevant evidence was in favor of it for decades. Thanks to people like you, Evolution is the most well established theory in science, with more evidence favoring it than any other theory, including the theory of Gravity. Are you floating toward the ceiling yet? No, of course not, but because your standard of truth is the bible, you will reject all evidence that conflicts with it because you hold the bible to be true _by default_. News flash, reality doesn't work that way, and evidence does not conform to your outdated myths.
zemorph42 look we know what gravity can do. But notes we don't know why or even where gravity comes from another dimension maybe well i tell you gravity fluctuates from time to time well i have an answer for that God well this reality is only projected by God and sometimes like in a video game a small glitch thats why we can see that light itself is not a true constant i think if they correlate the fluctuation in gravity and light speed they will see just what i see we are only pawns in a video game look at the quantum eraser experiment we ain't really here .branes in a jar maybe well kinda only we are just energy like spirits.
rose white The evidence for evolution.
There are a number of different kinds of evidence for evolution, all of which on its own is enough in order to confirm evolution as a fact.
1. Fossil evidence. Dead remains of animals that don't exist today, but share similarities between those that exist, for eg, the mammoth and elephant.
2. DNA/genetic evidence. The similarities of DNA between species, all sharing a lot of common DNA code, and very limited differences, evidence that they all originated from the same ancestor. Eg, human and ape DNA are only 2% different.
3. Embryology. Almost all embryos look the same and slowly change in the fetus. Human embryos have shapes for fins that grow into ears. Dolphin embryos have legs that grow into gills, and so on. Even chicken and human embryos look very similar in the early stages. Means, they all at one time were the same species, but evolved into different ones.
4. Vestigial organs. Whales have leg bones. Many flightless birds have wings. Many blind fishes like cave fish have eyes. Some apes have tail bones but done have tails. And so on.
5. Laboratory evidence. You can replicate evolution in a lab. You can create different species of insects, plants, bacteria, animals and so on, using either artificial selection or genetic engineering. Man is able to create new species of life.
6. Geology. Many species exist only at a certain place in the world. But share common traits or ancestry with species nearby. Meaning that evolved from common ancestors but thought out time they changed due to differences in their particular environment.
And so on.
My change happened in a few seconds. I was reading about Cain & Abel & just screamed, "THIS IS BAT SHIT CRAZY!!!! And I must read the rest in order to torture the nuns." The thing that broke the camels back for me was Cain's wife. Where'd she come from?
Marilyn Exactly! And they moved to a city. Where the hell did the city come from? The Bible is so full of crap.... Page after page of crap....
You must believe Cains wife was one of his sisters from Adam and Eve. Incest again. No evidence of 900 year old people. None. People from the Czech republic where I'm from up to 26 thousand years fully modern well before Adam and Eve with the supposed fall of man. Accurate dates. The bible is wrong from the start but many churches will deny the dates because they know their theology and doctrines have to be false. Gross errors in the word of God. No God bless from atheist/agnostic Lee.
@@tommonk7651 Hell was remodified from a garbage dump...gehena. Simply meant destruction not a place of eternal torment the churches kindly made up back then. May no God bless! We can love, inspire and bless one another. Good enough for me. Apparently Jesus ascended and deserted mankind in hiding. Take care from atheist/agnostic Lee.
AronRa is the rock star of atheism. I love his style.
Within the first fifteen to twenty minutes, "Aron Ra" points out that many people have become influenced into believing _extraordinary_ claims that can never be observed, measured, or tested. Mr Ra implies that these extraordinary claims have never been observed, measured, or tested because they are false.
Of course, if a claim is indeed false, then it cannot be observed, measured, or tested. For example, "alchemy", "necromancy", and "perpetual motion machines" are all extraordinary claims/phenomena that have never been properly observed, measured, or tested.
Whether or not an extraordinary claim is indeed false (and the three I just mentioned most widely considered false), just pause and think about _how much easier it must be_ to influence others into believing an extraordinary claim that's false if that false claim is presented to us by an *authoritative-sounding speaker* whom we find trustworthy, seems scientifically knowledgeable, and provides us with the _appearances_ of evidence and proof (but is not actual evidence or actual proof because the claim is false).
It is self-evident that a _false_ claim presented _as true_ to us by someone we *trust* and respect as *authoritative* and *scientifically knowledgeable,* with an _abundance_ of what we are willing to accept as *"good evidence",* is going to seem considerably more believable than a false claim presented as true to us by someone we already *reject* as a dishonest and whom we _do not_ consider to be authoritative or knowledgeable, and whom is unable to provide us with any evidence that we are actually willing to accept.
It is worthwhile to belabour the point; it does not require an IQ above 100 to realise that when it comes to engineering people to believe a false claim - _a false claim that appears to be backed by scientific evidence, and is understood to be the current "scientific consensus"_ - that false claim is going to have vastly more potential to be believed than a false claim that isn't backed by any evidence we are willing to accept, is rejected by the current scientific consensus, and is coming from someone we don't think is trustworthy or scientifically knowledgeable.
Just think how much more vulnerable we are to the influence of those we trust, consider to be scientifically knowledgeable, and who seem to be providing us with "good evidence" for their claim! Clearly we are _profoundly_ more vulnerable to those people, but how often do we suspect we are being misled by them into believing a false claim? This rarely, if ever, happens.
To bring all of these points back to Aron Ra: Like some other atheist influencers (e.g., "Penn Jillette", "Derren Brown", and "Matt Dillahunty" to name a few), Mr Ra is a "street magician" who performs unsophisticated psychological magic tricks on his audience.
The reason I say that is because Ra's claims about "fish-to-fishermen evolution" simply _does not stand up to proper scrutiny._ The reason his claims about "evolution" seems so persuasive to his audience is because his claim is backed up with _token_ evidence and the _appearances_ of proof.
With just a modicum of superficial reasoning by the casual thinker, it becomes completely understandable as to why so many genuinely believe they have a direct unbroken genetic lineage to a great great long-ago unobserved fish-like grandma. But upon proper scrutiny, when the "magic trick" has been revealed, this extraordinary claim lays bare for all to see as ridiculous, hilarious, and patently absurd.
If you trust that Mr Ra is an honest and scientifically knowledgeable person, and if you accept the "evidence" he presents as "good evidence for his claims about fish-to-fishermen evolution", then you are not going to properly scrutinise his extraordinary claims. Not unless you make a serious and conscious and effort.
The extraordinary claims that Mr Ra makes which have never been observed are as follows:
1) That lifeless molecules swished about on Earth until they accidentally came to life. I.e., wholly naturalistic and unguided "abiogenesis". (Abiogenesis remains a wholly _speculated_ phenomenon. There is no good reason to think that life can emerge from non life on Earth.)
2) That a long-ago unobserved fish-like ocean-dwelling creature "accidentally mutated" into your great great long-ago grandma. I.e., fish-to-fishermen evolution. (While no one disputes "genetic variation", there are also _"hard limits"_ which put limits on the extent of change that is actually possible. Fish-to-fishermen evolution requires a suspension of these "hard limits".)
Can anyone - not just you - who considers Mr Ra to be some kind of "rockstar of atheism" really say they have properly scrutinised the fundamental claims Mr Ra makes in an unbiased and intellectually honest manner? I doubt it, and there is no need to get angry at having this pointed out. After all, we should all strive to know as many true things - and as few false things - as possible. And the way to go about this is to *seek true things for true reasons.*
Just wish the phone call quality was a little bit better, love AronRa!!
Allow me to save one hour of your time.

Some people are the most secure knowing as much as they can , others must either know everything or pretend that someone who does is looking out for them . It really has a lot to do with how independent a person is from the beginning .

So sorry AronRa........sorry for your loss....peace
i think i remember him from my best friend growing up haveing sleep overs at her house and listening to the radio! i was usually too polite to ask her to change the station.
Aron Ra and Richard Dawkins are the catalyst for my deconversion.
All Hail Aron Ra!
Evolution is an observable, measurable natural phenomenon - changes in allele distribution in populations through successive generations. The theory of evolution is our way of describing, understanding and explaining that natural phenomenon.
I grew up believing, because I was told, that I had prophetic gifts. When I was tested, I proved that I was just good at analytical thinking. I could also speak at adult levels, because everyone was older than me and so I had to learn, just to be taken seriously. Sad that it had to be rooted in a delusion that was impressed upon me at such a young age.
like that reply you cleared up the meanings of those terms thanks
Awesome radio show...subscribed :)
AronRa was exactly right. Having to teach all of the Creation myths and Evolution in class will absolutely KILL Creationism.
Yeah especially when you try to compare them I've actually thought about going on to the AIG site and going Page by Page and correcting every single page of inane stupidity
Every time I see the "Is evolution a fact?" topic pop up I expect something like the following.
Seth does nice intro, takes a couple of minutes. Poses the question. "Is evolution a fact?"
Aron: "Yes. That was easy. So are we done?"
Seth: "Uh, I was hoping for a longer answer."
Aron: "Yeeeeeeeeeees."
I'm glad AronRa is an advocate for atheism and science as well as helping Seth become what he has now (in 2019), but Aron has always bored me....and I'm an atheist who shares his thoughts. I've tried watching Ra's content on UA-cam, but just cant get through without wanting to fall asleep.
The ad that showed up before this video was for a Christian university where God's word is at the core of the teaching focus.

Good luck thinking for yourself...
When I woke up, it was quicker than over night. The pastor was giving his sunday sermon and made a statement that I knew to be false. I wish I could remember what he said. Immediately thare was a cascade realization that nearly everything that I had been taught by the Catholic Church was false and could not be supported by any reality. One of the few times that I really amazed myself.
If the knowledge/information of the books comprehends over the logic and wisdom of our brain and also if there is any empirical data, which is verifiable, unless our measurement tools has NOT reached to level where it can be sure about the conclusion.
Finally this book has to pass the test of time.
This thing about the mechanism I had about it before. Can anyone give me the name of some scientist who has popularized or used this term when talking about theories and stuff?
Distinct from our ability to predict events?
Researchers took a gap in the evolutionary history between lungfish and primitive tetrapods, and reasoned that there must be a transitional form in between.
They got the approximate dates for lungfish (older) and tetrapods (younger), and worked out the best place between these two dates to go looking for transitional forms.
They worked out what kind of rocks that muddy coastal regions would have turned into...
Aron ra a real good egg,my heart goes out to him.[atheists feel empathy too].
One thing I want to point out about evolution not being a law is that evolution does not necessarily always happen. Gravity does, thermodynamics does, but evolution occurs sometimes, under certain circumstances.
My father in law died and the family went to Orocovis. There is a latin belief that when people die they come to visit you and pull you from your feet. I did not believe in that but when I went asleep in bed, covered by a bedsheet, I felt that something just pulled from my feet very fast. I woke up immediately but then I noticed that my feet were stil covered. In the rushed way that my feet felt the bedsheet was ripped, it was supposed that my feet would be nake. Of course, that was an illusion. The bed was still covered and my feet.
I'd like to get that PM too, but only because I need good sources of information and maybe this will help :)
Cool story bro!

One guy says we have enough information, and I'm just saying we don't have enough because I don't know anything about the subject.
And then you come along and say the exact opposite.
When I say that we don't have "all the facts", I was saying that there is still information out there to find.
I mean, its really not so hard to understand what I'm saying. The fun of science is that we are discovering new things, not staying by all beliefs.
It is a fact that evolution has taken place and is taking place. No one is arguing that our current understanding of HOW it takes place or has taken place (which is the Theory of Evolution) is infallible and 100% accurate. Evolution simply means change over time, and only the craziest of creationists will argue that no change at all has taken place.
it is hard for me to get back there, so i just let myself loose once every week or two, but meditation does help internally, it helps a person move away from anger, and it helps ignore irrational fear. i am not buddhist, but i get the idea of nirvana to a large extent because i have been there many times, no drugs. it isn't a special place. a better statement is balance. meditation helps, but many things can be meditation. (no jerking off isn't meditation, that isn't relaxing, nor is sex)
At 58:00 mins AronRa quotes the bible: Do not be easily provoked in spirit, for anger resides in the lap of fools.

When I was a little kid I wasn't allowed to watch the Smurf because it was "Satanic" with all of the magic in it. And my mother somewhere got the miss information that there was a character named "Beelzebub" in it. Which years later I google searched and found no evidence anywhere of a Beelzebub character or mention of it. I remember as a kid watching it in secret sometimes, and still to this day I get a feeling of something be "not right" about the show, no matter how harmless it is.
The audio gets better in later podcasts.
When starting to teach all the creation myths don't forget the Jatravartid people of Viltvodle VI that believe that the
entire Universe was in fact sneezed out of the nose of a being called the Great Green Arkleseizure.
They also have a matching Apokalypse lined up.
Teach the controversy!
Correct. The theory of evolution is tentative, but that applies to every thing we know.
@ninja909 when was this?

there are buddhists who truly do not think an ultimate creator or an afterlife, or even reincarnation exists, but instead regardless of the lack of production or helping others where they can would prefer to spend time meditating on nirvana. i just wish i could tell those that nirvana is something you can achieve internally, but the time it takes to get there destroys your ability to help the rest of the world unless you have cash. and your morals and what you view as good or bad does'nt change.
What Untamed said. I've always wanted to go hang out a drink with Aron but now I want a tattoo as well lol
Should be the shortest episode ever. One word. YES!
