The leaves are a pretty slick idea. Ive had luck with straw/hay compared to regular mulch, but Ive frankly had just about as much luck using none at all so long as I get a canopy over the exposed ground. Getting it to settle with the soil exposed early is the tricky part there.
Most of my attention goes into the soil and long term fertilizers; as well as making sure I get the original root base somewhere between 10-20" deep so itll basically taproot.
At that point I can usually let them buck the wind and elements themselves. I have had occasional issues with blight/bacterial spot but those were usually on nursery plants that I got early on from a Big Box store hoping to get an early worm.

3 of them are Sweet 100's and one is midnight snack. Any indeterminate tomato plant will grow this big if they have the nutrients they need to reach their full potential. Thanks for the encouragement.

My SS100 and Rapunzel are approaching 4ft from the top of their pots. I think the maters have slowed down due to fruit load v limited pot space but the cherries seem to be ok. The bigger tomatoes I think are having a super hard time now due to lack more pot space and nutrition. I think like last year but by a bit less, I'm missing the extra P and K as well as maybe some extra nutrients. Improvement, but still not Perfecto.
Rapunzel btw...I have it in a 5 gal. Loaded, 4ft tall now and still going strong...plz try it some time. I promise nobody will regret anything lol

Hi Matthew, Glad to hear your plants are doing well. Sometimes they will slow down as they produce fruit. Make sure they have plenty of water and put some leaves around the top of your pots to help keep moisture in. Leaves are natures mulch.
