The BEST Method Of Tying Tomatoes: String Trellis Tomatoes

  • String trellising tomatoes is the best way I've found to support indeterminate tomatoes because it corrects the problems of other methods. It allows you to grow as many main stems as you'd like and support them to an unlimited height, so with this method, you will never have to top your indeterminate tomatoes again! I have tried every method of supporting tomatoes from tomato stakes, tomato cages, wire trellising tomatoes (similar to the cattle panel tomatoes method) and Florida weave, and this method is the best trellis for vine type plants by far.
    This method also works great as a cucumber trellis, so if you're looking for a way to trellis cucumbers, look no further. This method is versatile as a garden trellis for any plant that loves growing vertically, and it is the best tomato trellis I have found.
    The material I use in this video is linked in my Amazon Storefront* below. If you have any questions about how to trellis tomatoes, tying up tomatoes, or any questions about growing tomatoes in general, ask them in the Comments and I will answer them as best as I can.

      I'm really happy to hear you're enjoying the videos. One correction: I am not a garden guru. Not by a long shot. I'm an electrical and civil engineer, so I just like experimenting and building projects to keep my mind busy, and I'm also an Italian from NJ, so I love playing in the dirt and growing plants. I still have a lot to learn, but I love sharing my experiments, successes and failures with everyone to inspire them!

      @@TheMillennialGardener Nah, I'm going with garden guru. You and I are a lot alike. We research everything to death to know every possible way of doing something until there's basically not much left to learn besides experimentation. Hence the engineer. That then qualifies you as a guru after a while. Just FYI. lol

    WOW. One of the best teaching/explanation videos I have seen. You are an amazing teacher. You speak slowly and clearly, your camera work is excellent leaving the shot long enough to understand what you are describing. Sometimes a 3 minute video can take 10 minutes to understand as you rewind, rewind, rewind and comment, "How did they get from this point to this point. Did I miss it? Did you see it?" You progress through a process in a clear deliberate manner. Again excellent job. You have a new subscriber.

      @@TheMillennialGardener It was a great season last year. Unfortunately, we live in an apartment complex and it got out of control but they had great mercy on me and let it all grow seeing as it was producing food. This year I had to limit to determinate tomatoes but we are house shopping. One of my first crops for our new house I will do it again and on a much larger scale! For now I just need to turn my waiting room into a class room. Doing a lot more peppers this year as they don't generally grow very big, perfect for an apartment patio.

    Dear Millennial Gardner, I'm working in AK but live in TX. We purchased land a few years back and we should start developing our garden plot this fall. It has to get high fenced because of the deer issue.
    One very appealing quality of this string trellis is that for many gardners, their backs aren't what they use to be. This is a great method to assist the aged in continuing the art of gardening.
    Thank you

      This will make things far easier than pounding stakes into the ground, bending down to tie them and managing the suckers all year as the stakes become overwhelmed by the vines. I will never use staking again for indeterminates as long as I have room on my extensive trellis system. Setting up these trellises was worth every amount of effort! Thanks for watching!

    I live in Carteret County NC and do a very similar method. It works great! You can get a little more slack out of the turnbuckle by fully opening them (the sides have opposing threads) and then tighten the main body of the turnbuckle. You get twice the pull since both sides are pulling in.

    I've recently seen the string trellis concept and love the idea. I've been growing tomatoes for decades and use various good support/cages. Lately I've been using tree poles to support my supports because my plants get so big and heavy. I've been trying to figure out how to use my tree poles to create the frame for the string trellis. This video is fabulous and I'm thinking I can modify your system a bit by using the tree poles (drill a small hole in the top center for the airplane wire) and mostly use the rest of your system. Thanks so much for this great video.

    I'm in Georgia, and this is my first year growing a garden. I'm gonna set up this method for my tomatoes right out of the gate. However, I'm using 8 foot T posts with conduit along the top. I also see how some folks use those little J hooks to support larger tomatoes, so I'm gonna get some just in case I need em'.
    Thanks for the video!
    P.S.
    I also saw your video on the beit alpha cucumbers and ordered some. After sowing indoors, they came up fast and are growing like crazy in my solo cups! Can't wait to get em' outside!

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  3 роки тому +1

      That is going to be a great system for a first year garden. It will work so much better than staking. These string trellises are amazing and revolutionize growing indeterminate tomatoes. Cucumbers germinate in 2-3 days on a heat mat. So do squash and watermelon. I haven't even started my seeds yet because I won't plant them out until mid-April because they hate any nights cooler than 50. They can be started last minute because they grow so fast. It's very different than tomatoes and peppers, which should be started 6-8 weeks in advance.

    I would have appreciated links to your videos on other staking/trellising methods for tomatoes. You're the first person to explain to me the differences and how that changes your pruning practices. Very helpful.
    I'm sending this off to a couple of friends.
    Thanks again,

Watch the very first minute of the video and you'll see them flash above (I specifically say "I'll link to them above."). Glad you found it interesting. I've tried 5 different methods over the years and so far, this one rules for indeterminates.

      Giankees I grew up with my dad using concrete mesh for tomato cages. They work great, but you are limited to height. The string method let’s your tomatoes get much taller and produce so much more.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  4 роки тому +1

      Give it a shot on just a couple plants. See what method you like better. I can't do cages where I live because the disease pressure is so high they get diseases too quickly. This method helped keep my plants healthier and setting fruit longer than normal.

  • @LockRocker

    Thank you for a craftsman approach. One important feature to add would be to run a copper wire which has been integrated into the overhead cable system into ground. Perhaps at this point another crimp connector from the original on the short slack piece from the loop and down your post to an underground metal stake. Don't want lightning strikes to smoke the posts and make fried green tomatoes! Nice work!

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  4 роки тому +1

      I get a tremendous amount of lighting where I live, but I have to say I'm not all that concerned about this. I'm surrounded by woods, so I don't see the 4x4's as big lightning magnets. If anything, they'll hit my weather station. That would be horrible!

    What is your plant spacing for the tomatoes and cucumbers? Both are usually 3' spacing from any other plant or surface. I assume perhaps a 2' spacing could be possible if growing vertically?
    Also, what is the spacing from the outside edge of the garden, looks like about a foot?

  • @jdollar5852

    I use corner posts with tposts in between and tie string to 9 Guage wire. This gives me about a 6 foot high trellis. I basically adapted electric fencing and grape trellis ideas because I already had those items on hand. I plan to get in some of the tomato hooks and plant clips to give them a try.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  3 роки тому

      I think you're going to like the results. If you've never string trellised before, it's a revelation. It's going to surprise you how wind-resistant they are, too, since they bend with the wind.

  • @gabiglaezer8685
    @gabiglaezer8685 4 роки тому

    I also use this system but I wind the string around the stem. I have not used the wire at the top yet but will change that soon. The winding means I don’t need that many clips. Thanks for sharing your setup!

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  4 роки тому +1

      I tried doing that, but I found when the wind blew, it rubbed the strings against the stems and it was cutting into the stems and damaging them. Using the clips, I'm not having this problem. Cutting the stems creates an entry point for disease, so I want to try and keep them healthy.

      If you skip to 2:58, you can copy that setup with some 7 or 8 ft t-posts and a piece of airplane cable or wire. That should give you plenty of height when paired with the double tomato hooks. You don't need to have something as complicated as my setup. You can certainly keep it simple. Anything you can run above to stick the tomato hooks onto will work as long as it gives you enough height.

    Brilliant! I'm going to adapt this to use in my tiny patio area outside my apartment. Management has offered to install hooks to support my plants (!) from the ceiling above (bottom of upper neighbor's balcony).
