    I think 2S is the way to go. I built one for my brother. Added a magnet to the front of the canopy and some tape to the bottom areas that would come in contact with the ground. A great little flyer with long flight times on a 2S 1600 Nanotech. Thank for sharing your videos.

      +55Wings Well thanks for watching. The canopy does need a more secure connection. Just back from recorded speed runs on 2S and 3S. 104kph on 2S and the canopy flew off during the 3S run spraying the contents far and wide.

    Hi Andrew,
    Love your posts and these wings.
    We put a small amount of tape on the nose to hold the canopy down (create a pocket for the canopy to fit in).
    Fast or slow, they are a great flyer although they do get bumped around in the wind.
    Re-gluing the motor mount is needed anytime because it will let go over time.
    For fast, we replace the spar with carbon fibre for wing stiffness, epoxy about an inch square around the horns to spread the load onto controls and re-use the lid of a tin can on the inside with the motor bolts through it (drill air holes too)
    The motor mount isnt meant for for what the frame can cope with (ditto with the phantom).
    cheers and thanks for sharing.

      It's an awesome fast little wing, nicely designed and made. Have fun, and tape down the front of the canopy if you're going to go flat out! Here's another build video by a flying buddy ua-cam.com/video/loR3xXkyOC0/v-deo.html

    I just ordered an ARF right now because of your videos. It is half off now so I only paid $62 shipped to the US. This is my first wing, so I hope I like it.

      +Mark Spohrleder Excellent Mark, you'll love it. Things to look out for - Canopy flies off at full throttle on 3S (tape it on), add more glue around the motor mount foam.

      Andrew Newton did your z84 come with a 3s lipo? I noticed in the description on gearbest that it includes a 25c 3s lipo. I figured that would complicate shipping to the US. I still haven't received my plane yet, just wondering if you got one.

    I built one last week. I still cannot believe how fast it is! I mean at half throttle, you're cruising at 60mph. I'm using the same power system that I've put on many other planes, but this one is twice as fast! This plane has virtually no drag.

      @@AndrewNewton looking forward to flying it however I've discovered that the motor I had planned to use out of my many spares won't allow the prop to clear the back end.
      The only motor I have that will is a 1400kv and that's not going to produce the trust needed on such a small prop so I'm gonna have to order a motor and have to wait grrr

    Just did some GPS telemetry speed runs. 104kph on 2S (65mph) and 146kph on 3S (91mph) We had flutter and motor cutouts on some runs but it survived.

    Andrew, been watching your videos and I appreciate your overall flying experience. I'm a newbie just learning to fly on this little gem. In fact, it's the first thing I've managed to keep airborne for more than 10 seconds - I crashed both an AXN and a walrus glider beyond repair. But I have some questions, if you don't mind...
    1. what do you mean by "dial down the throws"? how exactly do you accomplish it?
    2. what mixes and parameters do you program into your radio with this little guy?
    3. why does my motor sometimes sputter at high throttles? I bought the same ARF version from the same store.
    4. Is there a trainer you'd recommend over the AXN I tried and destroyed? Bixler?
    Thanks in advance for any advice you might offer.

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  8 років тому

      Hi Manuel. That interesting that you're having better success with this than the motor gliders. Although the Z-84 is fast it might be simpler to fly and more crash proof?
      1. I mean make the elevons move less for the same transmitter stick movement. Move the pushrod to an inner hole on the servo arm or further out on the elevon control horn to reduce elevon movement (also called throws). Can also do this via a programmable transmitter. Google Dual Rates and Expo for further research.
      2. Dual rates and Expo
      3. Motor sputtering might be due to a substandard ESC
      4. Definitely recommend any of the Bixlers. I learned on a Bixler 2 and it's still my favourite plane, a genuine all rounder. But most important for learning is wait for a clam day, stay away from trees, take it slowly.

    • @mannynunez1481
      @mannynunez1481 8 років тому

      I think I got ahead of myself as I purchased lots of really good planes and FPV equipment ... before I truly learned to fly. Now I'm scared to fly anything in my hangar. Gotta stop and regroup and try another trainer. Bixler does sound good. I'll give it a try. Thanks for the advice Andrew. :-)

    Great channel, really useful video, thanks Andrew. However, maybe you can help me please? Tried to maiden this wing but can't get it away as it always hits the ground. Motor mount points motor downwards so wonder if this is the issue, should I correct this or can I apply a lot of reflex to get this to fly?

    • @AndrewNewton

      Motor mount works for me as it is. About 5mm of reflex is required

    Ive been doing all the stuff i can to my Z-84 so its ready when my motor arrives, ive noticed that the elevons are up swept in shape (particually at the fuse end), does this plane need reflex on the elevons or does the shape of them handle it?

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  5 років тому

      From memory it still needs about 3mm of UP.

    I have a similar wing (Skyray) from hobbyking and for the life of me I cant work out why it keeps nose diving into the ground after I launch it... I have other wings (and planes) but this one has me stumped.... the CG is correct, it even comes with little CG markers on the underside of the wing... I have not done anything with the throw, expo or duel rates so hopefully you may have some tips.... thanks in advance.

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  8 років тому

      Greetings. It can only be elevon trim (if it dives with no power) or motor angle (if it dives under power). Michael Downie has just built and maidened one successfully, he might be able to help.

    I have one of these wings and I am having awful trouble keeping it airborne...
    I have paid close attention to the linkage throws and COG, and straight and level flight is achievable but when I turn it always ends up in a spiral of death that I cannot recover from and end up nose diving into the ground every time...
    Any tips??

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  7 років тому

      Ailerons reversed? Try more nose weight, reduce throws. Do you have video of the problem?

    • @brightstarboi
      @brightstarboi 7 років тому

      Sorry no video. I am sure the ailerons are correct as per the instruction book.. left and the plane turns left, right is right etc.
      I will add a bit more nose weight and reduce the amount of throw and see what happens. Thanks

    • @AndrewNewton

      Dont know exactly, mine is no longer flying. I would guess max of 10mm up and 10mm down. It requires about 4mm of reflex to fly level.
