Can't hear this song or watch the movie Basketball Diaries without thinking about my childhood and wondering how the hell I'm still alive let alone a single parent with custody of my son and daughter,There was 11 close friends in my circle growing up and now there is only 3 of us left that's not dead,in prison,or strung out on dope. I don't know what made me so lucky, but I really miss the ones who weren't...

  • @JetPackDino
    @JetPackDino 2 роки тому +31

No radio station ever played this, not where I grew up. It wasn't that kind of song. But one night in 1983 when I was 13 I heard it on The Dr. Demento Show and it made a huge impact in my mind. But I never heard it again. The years went by and I began to think I'd actually imagined the song, maybe I was the only one who'd heard it, maybe it never really existed.
Thank God for movie that revived this song, and thank everyone for internet and UA-cam. This is an amazing, true punk song.

Had an English professor friend who lived downstairs from me in a row house in the middle of the city. Our mutual friend and fellow row house neighbor was a student of his. The professor gave him back a paper and had wrote on the top, regarding what he had wrote; " That's an ugly slice of life." When I listen to this song, that's what I think of; That's an ugly slice of life! I had eight friends or acquaintances die by the time I was 25 or so, but it wasn't this ugly. Holy crap. I used to love this song though.

I remember hearing this song on the radio shortly after its release. It was incredibly shocking, this upbeat tune with a hook that won't let go, and then you realized what the lyrics were, because you had only your ears and your friends, no lyrics or movie or video. Yes, people talked about it. We were simply stunned. And we knew it wasn't the Ramones. We didn't know who Jim Carroll was yet, but we did know he'd written a brutal song, and wondered what life must be like for him.

Ya know what's weird about "copyright"? Music companies spend thousands if not hundreds of thousands making music videos so they will be shown on MTV etc so that people will find out about said music and maybe go buy it. But when someone posts the same video on youtube they have to worry about it being taken down. l
Isn't people seeing the music video exactly what the music company wanted when they made that video???

I was sad, he was my favorite skater
His little brother Nate got sent to Iraq
And now Nate a'int ever comin' back
Cogsy Cogs blew out his own brain
and my life hasn't ever been the same
Frick's a guy who took his own life too
And man I thought that really blew
Brian caught cancer of the bones
Now the cemetery is his home
Those are people who died, died
They were all friends of mine

A mixture of fear, sadness and grief listening to this song, when it comes to death, even after my father died in 2009 I still don't understand it, I don't know what happens after you die, even though I mostly follow the whole Christianity thing, I still don't know how much of it is true and how much is BS.. No one who has died has ever come back and if they did there is no 100% proof of what happened, where they went, or what they saw.

MRXBOX n VAN BC well we could make it easier by doing just what you said there. Just try to find anything that can make us happy and try to focus on those things, just try to stay away from negativity best we can and kind of take the attitude when something bad happens.. "Aww well you know at least I am alive, have a roof over my head, food in my belly, and.. bleh bleh etc etc.." it's hard to stay on your cloud, but I think if we kind of intentionally direct ourselves to try to find any little bit of happiness we can and good that we can in any situation, we might just make it you know?.. Maybe..

I liked the Diaries film. Good performances by the actors and a realistic reflection of the mean streets but while I was impressed by the dark entertainment value I would have liked a glimpse into the structures of the heart that grips us so hard we become addicted, unaware we are designing our own destruction. I'm grateful that Jim Carroll left us this powerful message before going on to his next gig.

I'm from the same time and place as Jim Carroll. I identify a lot with his music and his story.

@robojony91 In the movie "Basketball Diaries", Leonardo Dicaprio plays the role of Jim Carroll, a young teenager who gets addicted to drugs and his life crumbles around him, but in the end he finds a way out through his writing. Jim Carroll wrote "the Basketball Diaries" as an autobiography, but in addition to being an author/poet, he was also a musician. The man singing in this video is the real Jim Carroll. It's pretty cool that the man lived to see his autobiography made into a movie. RIP

This guy knows an awful lot of people who died. I'd steer clear of him.

Except he escaped the life and wrote this song. He was able to live and speak to others through his art. He didn't die. That is an inspiration to many.

Lots of army vets are like that too and the older you get the more dead people you probably knew it's not as if he killed them himself he is just expressing some of the loss and trauma he has experienced and honouring his friends.

I remember the very FIRST time I saw the music video when I first watched the Basketball Diaries at like probably 11 years old… listening now at almost 26 years old and now I have my own names to fill in the lyrics… “they were all my friends”.. pretty sobering. ❤️‍🩹

Great vid, great movie. I listened to Jim Carrol way before Basketball Diaries came out and I was glad the movie showed the misery of heroin addiction. Thankfully Jim kicked the dragon!

In there early to mid70s punk erupted in NY city in a club called CBGB's. Bands like The Ramones with their heavy guitar driven sound would later on influence British Punk super stars like the Sex Pistols turning the focus of the movement over seas. But there was a lighter side to early punk in Bands like Blondie and Richard Hell & the Voidoids. New wave is a term that was used by the press later on to describe the lighter side of this movement in music. this is sits some where in between. Imho
