  • JB Straubel, Founder and CEO of Redwood Materials, gave the Conradin von Gugelberg Memorial keynote at Stanford GSB's Climate, Business & Innovation Summit on March 8, 2023.
At Redwood, JB is transforming the lithium-ion battery supply chain by offering large-scale sources of domestic anode and cathode materials produced from recycled batteries, creating a fully closed loop that will drive down the costs and environmental footprint of electric vehicles. Prior to founding Redwood, JB Co-founded Tesla and spent 15 years as Chief Technology Officer. At Tesla, JB built one of the best engineering teams in the world, and among many topics, led cell design, supply chain and led the first Gigafactory concept through the production ramp of the Model 3. JB had a direct role in both R&D, team building and operational expansion from prototype cars through to mass production and GWh-scale. JB holds a Bachelor of Science in Energy Systems Engineering and a Master of Science in Energy Engineering from Stanford University.
The annual Conradin von Gugelberg Memorial honors a member of the MBA Class of ’87, and was founded by his peers to foster environmental responsibility among business students. The annual Climate, Business and Innovation Summit brings GSB students, alumni, and the wider Stanford community together to explore the challenges and opportunities presented by climate change.

JB's point about public awareness for battery is so important. In our household, we've long had a dedicated container for dead batteries. Once full, it's taken to the nearest large supermarket when we go to do the grocery shopping and emptied into the appropriate receptacle. Here in the UK, many DIY & discount stores, supermarkets, and even garden centres, among others, will have a battery recycling point within the store. They seem quite popular, but I'd imagine that they only capture a tiny fraction of the available materials for recycling.
There simply isn't enough of a public awareness engagement programme to encourage recycling across the board of a whole range of items.

Only thing is, why do we still use Cobalt? LiFePO4 battery tech is much cheaper, although less energy-dense. But the advantage is LiFePO4 is discharge rate and 0-100 cycling (vs 20-80 for Li-ion). Thus, despite being less energy-dense, you get equivalent usable energy from LiFePO4 in same form factor/weight as Li-ion (ie, entire battery is usable vs ~60% for Li-ion). Right there, you lower battery costs around 15-20% (and why Tesla now uses them).

As someone who likes to cook, I am always wont to liken the addition of greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere to that of a recipe. For any given recipe, when requiring a good outcome, the list of ingredients must be included in the right proportions. Failure to do so results in a less than optimal result, often that of a complete failure.
Earth's atmosphere is a recipe, muck around with it like humanity unfathomably insists on doing, despite knowing better, then don't expect a yummy workable result.

    • @andrewvicendese9008
      @andrewvicendese9008 Рік тому +3

Sodium ion can compliment lithium ion batteries by being used in smaller lower range and cheaper cars and helping with energy storage. With LFP doing medium range cars and doing energy storage with sodium ion.
High nickel cathode batteries will still be used for high range cars/trucks, performance cars and hopefully eventually short range aircraft.
I don't think it will be a winner take all, we need a large toolbox to solve renewables and it's great we're getting more and more technologies to help with the transition.

      Sodium Ion.....
Probably not for "Smaller" or "cheap" due to the lower physical volume available in the vehicle to accommodate the pack.
Sodium Ion cells are (at the moment) larger and heavier due to their volumetric/ gravimetric density.
As such, the "Space vs Range" compromise would be "difficult".
      .
      Applications? (imo)
      .
      Storage (Container sized)
      .
Public transport (larger vehicles with a known daily range, no critical weight restriction and overnight charging)
      .
We also have the "newer" chemistry CATL cell emerging which is allegedly 15 per cent more energy dense than LiFePo4 cells, and costs less than Nickel and Cobalt-based alternatives.
      .
It's an improved version of the LiFePo4 chemistry with a mix of magnesium, Zinc, and Aluminium replacing some or all of the Iron. So the MP3 is still a Lithium Phosphate battery, but with a gravimetric density of ±210 Wh/kg.
      .
This may be a "sweet spot" for "normal performance" vehicles?

Tesla has a highly capable leadership team that runs almost on autopilot, as shown at the last investor day. JB wouldn't stand in their way and would avoid Elon's mistakes like S/X steering wheel, removing radar, AI-based wiper sensor, overestimating FSD, overestimating deadlines, and so on.
He would bring an apolitical stance, credibility and stability back to the Tesla brand to raise investor confidence. IMO due to his past at Tesla, I believe he would bring the best of Elon, but not the worst.

And that's assuming batteries only last 10 years on average, which seems unrealistic. Batteries going into EVs and BESS today might still be in primary use 20 years or more from now, and even at EOL they may enter into secondary use as repurposed batteries.
