- In August of 2002, former Santa Fe steam locomotive 3751 returned to the rails for a thrilling excursion from Los Angeles to Williams, Arizona and return in honor of the NRHS 2002 National Convention. Leaving Los Angeles, the mighty 4-8-4 battled the grades of Cajon Pass before setting out across the desert to Needles, thrilling spectators with her awesome displays of steam power. The following day, the 3751 completed the trip to Williams where she prepared to head up the Grand Canyon Limited excursion. This highlight of the Convention featured the 3751 running on the Grand Canyon Railway, doubleheading and tripleheading with GCRy's own steam power! The scenic splendor of South Rim vistas framing nostalgic images of doubleheaded and tripleheaded steam on the rails - it's an incredible sight that can't be beat!
On the return trip from Williams to Los Angeles, 3751 made a rare-mileage trip over "the Peavine" and the Arizona & California Railroad via Parker. An exciting finale over Cajon and into the Los Angeles Basin winds up a magnificent steam event!
I remember I watched this video in 2016.
3751 and 4960 have some of the best looks and whistles, a locomotive could ever have!
A steamer going up Cajon pass is a by gone era that is for sure. What an event that must have been to witness in person on both ground and passing trains!
HyperActive7 Yeah it was the bees Knees!
I’m coming here in the second week of 2023 just to say the OP’s comment aged like milk given we’ve seen a Big Boy conquer Cajon on an excursion.
My father and I where there at the NRHS Grand Canyon trip. One of the best steam hunting trips we ever where on. We had seats in the first dome car. Awsome!
I have this DVD im really enjoying it Thank you Pentrex for making this movie about 3751. :)
I have this video...Its great!
I love the tripleheader at the end
this is when you say "they make like they used to" and it a shame that there so few running anymore.
2:18 who knew that months after this happened 18 would make her last run on GCR before going out of service until being put up for sale and then sent to Oregon then colorado where she's been since but fortunately has been bought by a new owner in PA where she'll be heading to sometime in 2021 for her new future.
Nice Video.
I agree with you 100%
It would be awesome to see another 3751/4960 doubleheader or photo op on the GCRY. I wonder if that could be possible now that 3751 is slated to receive PTC equipment
The "Let's Roll" auxiliary tender has traveled behind 4449, 3751, 4960, 18 and 700, but never 765
1:09 "A BNSF diesel, still wearing Santa Fe Warbonnet paint, ..."
This statement is incorrect, in my opinion, because the locomotive is in BNSF Warbonnet paint for 2 reasons:
1. ATSF Warbonnet locomotives have different lettering on them compared to their BNSF Warbonnet counterparts. (i.e. ATSF Warbonnet locomotives have smaller lettering and "Santa Fe" lettering on the carbody sides; BNSF Warbonnet locomotives have larger lettering and "BNSF" lettering on the carbody sides
2. ATSF Warbonnet C44-9Ws are numbered in the 600s while BNSF Warbonnet C44-9Ws are numbered in the 700s/4700s.
still, its hard 2 wait til dey open it agin
@Stefan Delp But at least one piece of this excursion is participating in the new NS steam program, and that's the N&W Powhatan Arrow private car.
10 years later.

I think I might buy myself a copy of this maybe this year also does anyone know why number 18 seen in this video left the grand canyon in 2008?
3751's Trip to The Grand Canyon took place about almost a year after 9/11.
TommyPickles Fan1992 Better Put on your tin foil hat for safety now!!!
Please put it back on sale!
Bruce Tharpe NO!
@@jonmacdonald5345 YES! (Wow I’m 2 years late lol)
@@brucetharpe762 it was Sold 2 years ago!
@@jonmacdonald5345 Well, it’s back on sale now. I’ll probably take down this comment now that it’s back.
18 was bought by the Colebrookdale Railroad in Pennsylvania where she'll be heading to in a matter of weeks.
@DanielVolker there going back to steam
is that the whistle for 2472 on 3751?
I’m very late to the party, but no. The whistle on the 3751 is an AT&SF 6 chime that just so happens to sound similar to the 6 chimes of rival Southern Pacific.
2:52: Alco`s???

Y did they drop the steam program?
Xanterra says it isn't "environmentally friendly". I'm sure that isn't it. It's probably too much money and xanterra thinks it's a waste of money.
I rode the GCRY in May 2009 and it sucked! They have 2 perfectly good steamers (29 and 4960) and they don't use them! Get rid of xanterra!
