When Edgar picks up the guitar it’s suddenly 1968 again and the height of psychedelia. He carried the tone of late sixties Hendrix and Clapton all his performances well into the 21st century. The only other musician caught in a similar time warp is Carlos Santana. I once met Edgar after one of his inferno shows in Aachen. Wonderful man...
I remember seeing them in Cleveland in '86. People were fairly quiet and respectful during this song until Ed stepped out from behind his keyboards and strapped on his Les Paul. The crowd roared!
Why is this guitar solo the best ever? Because you can put the tune on constant replay and still hang out for that EF guitar to kick in and when it does it's perfect, restrained, economical, carries you along floating and drops you down gently at the end but still leaves you begging for more. So you have to play it over and over. I like Santana's Song Of The Wind in a similar vein but if you listen to them back to back you'll see the difference between "great" and "genius". Genius has an indefinable quality.
Holy crap! This song is amazing and the guitar solo is also superb! I remember I used to listen to Tangerine Dream songs and I wasn't even born in the 70's, the group seems to be very nice that still kept going on. I just love instrumental electronic music! Thanks for posting this!
Don't wanna hate against this solo or this track. it's all great... but best solo you have heard in 60 years? Im sorry, but there are a couple of guitar players out there who are just way more versatile than this and are just overall better in general, I think you can say. Just take Steve Vai's Tender Surrender for example.
@@larrysinnott7379 Well, opinions are like buttholes. Everybody has one. ;) I'm sorry, but I don't see how this solo could possibly qualify as the best solo, by any standards of a guitar solo, I really don't. I know that not the guy who plays the fastest is automatically the best guitar player. But there are some quite objective criteria to a guitar solo imo: complexity would be one of course, and some sort of explosive expressivity, among emotion. And you would need a slam dunk in all categories to be the best imo. And this just doesn't check all the boxes for me, in all honesty... it checks some, but definitely not all. But it really wasn't my intention to hate here, I'm just for putting things into perspective here and there. But how anyone could consider this to be better than Stairway to heaven for ex. is just beyond me... It's just my honest butthole opinion :)
Alvin, if this is the best solo you've heard in sixty years then you have not listened to Cloudburst Flight, nor have you listened to Pergammon, both by Tangerine Dream.
I agree.... why.... name one other tune where you can put it on constant replay and just hang out waiting for the guitar to kick in, like an orgasm that goes on forever.
It would be totally awesome if Pink Floyd's David Gilmour could do a collaboration with Tangerine Dream. Just imagine Gilmour's epic guitar licks layered over TD's atmospheric music!
louis stevens Gilmour's done stuff (stylistically) that would fit nicely on Force Majeure or Cyclone. Those are their most guitarish albums though imo so maybe that's why.
Floyd's Nick Mason actually produced one of Tangerine Dream's early albums (Stratosfear, in 1976), at the Hansa studios in Berlin, before the group decided that they weren't entirely satisfied with the results and re-recorded the album at their own studio, producing it themselves (they more or less had to purchase the space and fit it out themselves from scratch, which cost an arm and a leg and the new equipment was full of glitches, but they persevered and completed the album). The original Mason-produced version has surfaced in recent years, and it's not bad, but quite different in feel from the officially-released album.
At the time that you wrote this, Edgar Froese was still alive (in this world ..) and he was a great guitar player himself. His guitar play can be heard on much of TD's work, like here starting at 6:12
AHH! I can't believe I found this song again! I've really been getting back into tangerine Dream again. Need to get of that Ozric Tentacles craze I've been going through, but they're just so damn amazing! But so is Tangerine Dream. =)
In the original version on "Underwater Sunlight" the sublime guitar comes in at 2:15, on this version it comes in at about 6:15.... everything else is just foreplay.
@elisaysantana You can find it on Amazon...search for Pergamon Sphere and it comes back as Pergamon; its the same album as Pergamon Sphere (recorded live)
Very good... start video from 2:06, the dancers on the floor? :) Outstanding guitar solo.. and nice effects on this video... space, fireworks,, yeah rich in atmosphere
Low spec PC! it was top of the range 6 years ago. Yes it was Camtasia Studio screen capture recorder plus the open player that was using all my resources thus slowing it all down. I admit it's time for a new PC but not till Vista is sorted out 100%
Először azt hittem, hogy Electric Universe Meteor /kötelező GOA himnusz/ száma az első ilyen kísérlet. Szintetikus+gitár. Talán ez a GOA trance egyig gyökere? When i heard Electric Universe Meteor /compulsory GOA anthem/ tune thought this was the first. Maybe is this a root of GOA trance? Syntetic electronic song forewer!!!!
It needs all the right elements to come together at the same time... i don't think even edgar froese could do it today... but why try when you have already achieved perfection.
What? You didn't listen to Tangram, Force Majeure, White Eagle (for me their last best albums). I'll think you wanted to say you don't like T.D changes from analogue to digital synths and you're right. Vintage moogs, prophets and so on, is not recommended today because they have practically no maintenances (their electronic components are obsolete/out of order).
My favourite all time band - can anybody tell me where this recording actually came from - was it officially released anywhere or is this a bootleg? Thanks for the clip btw.
@billybongle chimp spanner and animals as leaders are VERY good, give heavy music a chance, it's still groovy, AND it's instrumental so don't worry about it being some annoying dude screaming(but i love the screaming, lol) i like this music, but it's just way too repetitive rhythmic wise, PLEASE LOOK UP THOSE BANDS!!! CLARITY IN CHAOS IS CHIMP SPANNER'S BEST SONG, HE FUSED TOGETHER 2 DIFFERENT PATHS OF MUSIC THAT SEEMED TO NEVER GO TOGETHER(ADVANCED TIME SIGNATURE CHANGES YET VERY MELODIC!)
billybongle ?? you write the same shit over and over again as bellow "Why does no one write stuff like this nowadays? The nearest I've come to...bands like this have been around for decades writing material for film scores etc as do kraftwerk as you commented on there with the same comments... get a life //
Think TD made a massive mistake using ultra repetative drum technology in their stuff in the eighties, ruined everything and made their music sound lazy. Interesting video not..state of the art at the time no doubt.

Epic story, thanks for sharing!
The same thing happened in Toronto at Massey Hall in 86. The crowd went crazy!!!! A very fond memory 😊❤
A guitar solo with incredible synths is my idea of heaven
Utterly majestic, ridiculously wonderful! I could listen to this for hours.
That guitar solo is sick, so powerful.
Need to listen to this every now and again.
Ed Shearan has something you might like
I love this song. Long live Tangerine Dream!!
that guitar is amazing
En Berlin 1987...enlazaron smiler con ryder on the raid...No me cansare jamas de escucharla....esta y todas de esa maravillosa banda
I feel like a nutty space age cosmonaut awaiting the first rays of the new rising sun shining over the rings of Saturn. Love, Billy

On which album do I get this long version with that fantastic guitar solo? At 86 "Underwater Sunlight" "Ride On The Ray" is only 5:15 long..
I have a problem with the videos, they couldn't play... :(

Hi,in what original cd or vynil of tangerine dream is included this song?
This is a commercial electro!
Tangerine Dream are died whit "Sorcerer"1977!
I met them all at a gig in 78,so that's crap

1987 ? To that time the Reichstag still belonged to the Eastern side of Berlin... DDR and not today Germany.
wrong. The permormance took place on the meadows IN FRONT of the Reichstag, which was part of West Berlin. Ich war da, by the way.
@zig zag, ja, ich war auch da. Man musste allerdings die DDR durchqueren. :-)

Far too long with nothing but repeated sections for the first six minutes.
This was stolen from Kanye West
