But, when it comes to e.g. buying a car, electronic devices, clothes, cosmetics, etc., or when it comes to going abroad for whatever reason, in general the more you earn, the better situation is going to be for you, because the prices of such things will not vary as much in different countries.
If you're looking for hard data, 4242 zł is the national minimum full-time gross wage (40h weekly), it will be 4300 zł starting from July this year. Biedronka, the largest supermarket chain offers cashiers 4700 zł gross for a start, but I suspect it's more in Warsaw. MZA, the Warsaw bus service, offers drivers 7300 zł gross (although 800-1100 zł of that are forms of a monthly bonus). The security guard who talked about "working more" meant working overtime, and overtime might be payed at a standard hourly rate, depending on the type of contract he had.
the amount of earnings also depends on experience and, for example, knowledge of languages. there are well-paid professions because there is a shortage of specialists, so such people can earn more.
4:26 yeah, in Warsaw [or any big city in Poland ,really] with 5-6k PLN net per month you will struggle too, especially if you live alone. These people highlighted that was a MINIMUM to barely survive, not to live a decent lfe.
Please note that in the West, people with low incomes, including those with average earnings if they do not have a family/children (i.e. sharing costs or benefits), mostly live in shared houses. Something that in Poland, apart from students and employees from other cities who then return to their home country, is practically non-existent. When I lived in the UK, I shared a house more than once with locals, and those with really good jobs, maybe not white collars, but middle-class specialists. The South West, with minimum wages then +/- 1,200 pounds, the cheapest flat with taxes and fees cost the same, so it was completely beyond the reach of a person earning that much, and in Exeter the prices were definitely not like in the capital.
So ive been living in UK for past 9 years and just returned to my hometown Kraków. And have to say Poland cached up a lot in recent years to UK, living standards are way higher than 9 years ago while in UK i could see decline in standards, i felt like Pounds dropped in value a lot and prices went crazy, nevertheless i feel like still UK is a lit ahead (all depends on job u doing)
Biggest downside of UK for me is NHS, i love free healthcare its a best thing to have but i could never use it, even for standard GP appointment i had to wait 3 weeks and one they said "please come back in3 months when we open new achedule or be everyday 8am and MAYBE doctor will see you.
So yeah i love the UK and maybe someday ill return 😜
Maybe I'll speak from my own experience. we lived for several years in another large city in Poland. My husband and I earned a minimum wage and were able to rent an apartment and live freely. now it's not possible, so we returned to the countryside, to my husband's family home. bills and food increased several times. When it comes to Warsaw or large cities, opinions are divided when it comes to the level of earnings. take into account, Rob, that this standard of living depends largely on whether someone has to rent an apartment or has a municipal apartment or inherited it from their grandparents.
I wrote it in a comment to some comment, but I'll write it here too to make it louder. All amounts are given assuming that someone lives alone and rents the entire flat themselves. In Poland, apart from students, shared houses are practically non-existent, as can be seen in this material, no one mentioned renting a room, everyone talked about an apartment. From what I know, you live in Scotland, I don't know what the prices are there, but I doubt that anyone earning close to the minimum wage or slightly more could afford to rent a house on their own. And the costs of housing in the given estimates amounted to 40-60% of the total (income 5-6k apartment costs 2-3k)
I am an accountant by profession. works remotely in an accounting office. I earn the national minimum salary of PLN 3,200. but I work remotely so I don't have to pay for rent or commuting to work. the company is located in Krakow. but I had a 5-year break because I was on maternity leave, and then I was looking for a job for a long time. that's why I start from a lower level. in my profession, if you have experience, you can earn really huge money. this is where the differences in earnings come from. and as I wrote in an earlier entry, the level and satisfaction with life also depend on whether you have to rent an apartment or have your own house.
Life in the capital is sometimes... you earn more, you pay more for housing. You pay just as much more for a restaurant staffed by higher-earning employees who serve you the same product as elsewhere, only at a higher price. I lived in the south east of England as a factory worker, in a small town in Poland as a middle-class specialist and now in the capital I have a really good job, yet my standard of living has not changed much. A little more posh and that's it. I'm slowly being drawn to the countryside, a small house, some land, a few chickens, a pond or a river with fish nearby. Minimize the need to slow down and tune in to nature... and I'm not old yet :-/
In my opiniom 4-6k net + cost of accommodation is fine for Warsaw. IT gives good salaries - 20-30k gross is achievable for seniors. White collar jobs 10-15k gross and more. Tutors 100-200zł per hour. Fitter, plumber, tiler earn often much more than that.
20-30k gross in IT, seriously, tell me where? White collar 10-15?? seeing that the average in Warsaw (AVERAGE!!) is 11k? Tutors for h cost 200?? when on OLX you have a lot of offers in the range of 60-80zł/h and you can find them cheaper and not at a low level, you just have to look a little. In March, I paid 900zł for a plumber called for an emergency, i.e. the most expensive option possible, for 7 hours of work, which included travel, two trips to the store (nearby), parts (+/- 100zł) and ok, I didn't take a receipt, but he still has to pay some taxes, ZUS, etc. + other costs and here you mention that such a specialist earns much more than 200/h...
In your reality, a Żabka employee probably has 8k net, if the prices are ther are still the same as in mine reality, tell me what pills I need to take to move there, I'll go into it like Alice into the rabbit hole...
20-30k brutto w IT serio powiedz gdzie... umysłowa 10-15?? patrząc że średnia w warszawie (ŚREDNIA!!) to 11k? Korki liczone za 200zł kiedy na olx masz masę ofert w przedziale 60-80zł a da się znaleźć taniej i wcale nie na niskim poziomie wystarczy trochę poszukać. Za hydraulika wzywanego na awarię czyli w najdroższej opcji jaka może być zapłaciłem jakoś w marcu 900zł za 7h pracy w co wliczony był dojazd, dwa kursy do sklepu (niedaleko), części (+/-100zł) i co prawda paragonu nie brałem ale jakieś podatki i ZUS też chłop musiał zapłacić czy auto opłacić, stronę int. irp. itd. a tu wymieniasz że taki specjalista dużo dużo więcej niż 200zł/h...
W twojej rzeczywistości pracownik żabki prawdopodobnie ma z 8k na łapę, jeśli ceny są dalej takie jak w mojej powiedz jakie tabletki trzeba wsiąść żeby się tam przenieść wbiję w nią jak Alicja w króliczą norę...

Well...I'm earning 5 digits and not live in Warsaw or any other big city ;-) Also not working in IT.
Uk salary +- 25% thing are more expensive 20% I dont think people in uk this days live much better but def not better environment

Poland is cheap for other nations... for polish people its not cheap... dont compare prize for example bread cost 4 zł its 1£. No!! Its wrong... realize u have 3000 no Matter zł or euro or £. U have 3000 pe month, bread cost 4, 1 l gas 6,5, chicken breast 12, watch how much cost everything in poland. This i reality for polish people.

2035, but these are just predictions, and they meant GDP per capita PPP.
It's pretty simple to calculate really - according to the IMF 2024 estimates, the UK GDP per capita PPP is 20% higher than in Poland. So if on average each year Poland grows 1.8% faster than the UK, we'll catch up in 10 years time. This seems very realistic, but it's not guaranteed.
And by the way, 20% ahead is not that much at all. For comparison, Germany is 37% ahead, and the Netherlands - 50%.
