This whole performance just instantly makes me weep tears of joy. Every aspect of this is simply magical. I deeply love this. Why can't I live in a world where this is what tops the charts?
It's our secret. It's best that way. It'll never be over exposed. It's an escape from the crap we have foisted upon us. It belongs to us, not them. By the way, check out Amelia Coburn's album `Between The Moon And The Milk Man'.
Folk music at its best, it has an ethereal quality that somehow resonates with a half forgotten history. It has depth and honesty that transcends time.
People today seem so one dimensional in their tastes, guess growing up in the 60s gave us eclectic tastes and a vast canvas of music to listen to, folk to funk, rock to blues. Open your ears kids there are wonderful horizons out there you should bend an ear to.
Saw them perform this live and it was unforgettable, loved this and the Testimony of Patience Kershaw but the whole performance was just the best show ever, never forget that night in a beautiful old Victorian music hall.
It's more dislikes now. Many many people only like stuff (I won't call it music) where you can sing along with oh so repetitive, boring strap line and wave your arms in the air at the same time. Art is out!
to think people would take the time to hit a thumbs down...like their opinion is going to make any difference in declaring this art. They are igeets...
Live bands I have seen, Jimmy Hendrix, Fairport, Cream, Jefferson Airplane, I give up seen lots in the 60's I'm not claiming anything. Just this has an emotional content that maybe its just me. I'm not a grumpy old man unless you object to W Sunset by the Kinks, I walked over that bridge in the 60's with my now wife nearly 50 years ago, like I say I'm not trying to make a point
I have seen Fairport, Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchell, Pink Floyd, Yes, Eric Clapton, Genesis, Led Zeppelin, Ralph McTell and many more. Yesterday I saw the Unthanks perform this at Shrewsbury Folk Festival and it was magical - up there with the best performances I've seen by anyone. People have different tastes.
David I completely agree, I was at Shrewsbury 2017 as well and they were utterly stunning, I had never been aware of them before but I was in tears at their performance of this piece that weekend, indeed it the whole festival was very moving, I had a fantastic time.
I always get very emotional when I listen to the Unthanks. Saw them at The Royal Festival Hall before Christmas and it was one of the best concerts I have ever seen.
love the way Rachel looks across to Becky, and smiles @ 4.47, an absolutely stunning piece of music, Mount the Air, wasnt just the best folk album of the year, it WAS the best album by any group, regardless of genre
There many, many superlatives that I could use, but I will resist that temptation by saying, majestic. This is another one of my accidental finds. I too was brought to tears of pure joy with shivers running up and down my back
this is a fairly new genre to me, and added this after watching rerun of the awards on BBC red button. loved the mix and sound of instruments and the voiced of course.....I may be a convert
my dad's family, Goodwin, are from Cambo traced back as far as 1600's, estate gardeners and workers at LittleHarle and environs, landed in Caton Lancs, before hitting the fertile valley of Santa Clara CA. Cheers Unthanks
Thank you for uploading The Unthanks! Utterly mesmerising music and sounds. The Folk A\wards were outstanding telly :-) Heard lots of new and different sounds. Stunning!
Im guessing this will pass a lot of people by, people who are not into folk, Im from the 60s so I guess my tuning is different, post this to your friends. Why well its just awesome and to me as relevant as grime (Im not trying to be obtuse, I just connect to lots of influences}
There's a whole lot for good folk bands and solo artist . I used to be very eclectic with my music until i started looking into who controls and owns the music industry . I stick to mainly folk and classical now, Folk music is very important to our culture . It is a social history of this great country , songs like , The rigs of the times , The testimony of Patience Kershaw and Four loom weaver . These three songs are all connected to the hardships bought about after the Rothschilds had robbed the stock exchange and basically bankrupted the country . Bellowhead do a good version of Rigs of the times , alas after 10 years they have parted company .
they have given me goose bumps since I came across them. They are powerful women who for all the influences that I share are connected to a bit of me I don't want to loose. There are people out there who disagree. Meet me by my allotment shed and we can fight it out with hoes or at my place with Telecasters, Love and hugs to the ladies who do art
Victoria Rules in white, currently playing with George Ezra previously with Guy Garvey and classical soloist, brilliant player, musician and singer. ua-cam.com/video/xMpqw5BdnrA/v-deo.html

It tops my charts. That and Kate Rusby singing Who Will Sing Me Lullabies.

I can't get enough of this performance, it's absolutely glorious.

Definitely, you can like many different types of music.
I wasn't even born in the 60's, good taste across many genres carries across the generations. My kids even now can appreciate great music like this
I simply love The Unthanks. Their voices burn bright in the night and the dark of winter
They are an utter treasure. They will be my alternative Glastonbury.
Trumpets, folk, angellic voices, drum n bass....whats not to like, Amazing amazing track! ......goosebumps.
+Simon R Only one trumpet. The one on the right is a flugelhorn.
What's not to like ? Well the words would have been handy. I didn't get sentence.
The Unthanks create music that is a feeling, an emotion, not just a sound
Saw them perform this live and it was unforgettable, loved this and the Testimony of Patience Kershaw but the whole performance was just the best show ever, never forget that night in a beautiful old Victorian music hall.
7 people who gave thumbs down have no soul... Mount the air - what a beautiful, enchanting song this is !

Totally outside my normal sphere of listening - weird, wonderful and fascinating all at once. I want more!
The Unthanks are sublime! So thrilling and subversive. I love them!

Wonderful Performance, loved the clog dancing at the end.
Watched it again! Marvelled at the sheer beauty again.... Perfect on so many levels!!
Staggeringly beautiful.
whats not to love about the unthanks, one of the best live bands about
+peter roberts You clearly haven't seen many live bands, the unthanks are dull and completely unoriginal...

Whenever I hear this tune I am transported back to my youth in 1960's Yorkshire!! (Yes, I know they are Geordies!!) p.s. Victoria rules!!
Musical perfection
Stunning, Still makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck....
Beautiful. Folk meets Jazz!
Folk meets jazz meets prog....I hear King Crimson's 'Islands' influence all through this utterly fabulous track!
I also love The Unthanks . Such a breath of fresh air .
Oh my good. This is wonderful.
I always get very emotional when I listen to the Unthanks. Saw them at The Royal Festival Hall before Christmas and it was one of the best concerts I have ever seen.
Transporting and enchanting.
i was there it was a great night
It's all about the brass and musicians so wonderfully accompanying singing.
Unthanks King of Rome version made me become first aware of this precious folk group.
Beyond words, so just listen.
Beyond beautiful

When singers have to sing harmony or in unison it's best to watch the others mouth, that is what they are doing.
There many, many superlatives that I could use, but I will resist that temptation by saying, majestic. This is another one of my accidental finds. I too was brought to tears of pure joy with shivers running up and down my back
Imagine the thrill of being a part of this ensemble and hearing this.
Magical, I was lucky to see them at Camberley Theatre on the 22nd June, wonderful beyond my expectations.
Wondrous music with enchanting brass - trumpet and flugelhorn! Magnificent!
We was there , and this was and awesome performance....Thanks for posting
I came to these via the Worzel Gummidge television show. Funny old world ain't it ? I'm taking it that McKenzie Crook is a big fan
Great ballad: the 2016 Folk award was fully deserved.
just a hunch. but Elgar would have peddled his bike for miles to support this performance

I found them when I was looking up an old king crimson tune(starless). l love this music.

Having just watched Worzel Gummidge, I thought I recognised the Unthanks, and I was right!
Je adore.
Who is playing trumpet and flugelhorn? They're amazing...
Victoria Rules in white, currently playing with George Ezra previously with Guy Garvey and classical soloist, brilliant player, musician and singer. ua-cam.com/video/xMpqw5BdnrA/v-deo.html
Just a hunch, but if you want to push a boundary or two this is a good starting point, I'm being ironic, because this blows me away
Unthanks hear the tender coming
@bbcradio2 please add the artists credits. That’s a pretty basic requirement surely? Who were these wonderful musicians on stage with the headliners?
Wonderful. Can I recommend Forest ‘Full Circle’?
There used to be a lovely animated video for this song on youtube... Anyone know where it's gone?
I love the Jimmy Crowley version before these girls were born
Adrian McNally/Becky Unthank based on "Maid in Bedlam"
The opening sounds like something from Sketches of Spain?
അടിപൊളി,
So moving I accidentally inhaled a tissue!
Nothing like a bit of clogging
Whoo not sure if they are a brexit post, I expect not, just love my bit of space (not political) if that's ok
...and I thought I didn't like folk music....
Rachel.
Strapping lasses, way eye..
Chumbuwmba
Braw.
nothanks
Bless..toddle off..
@@sixfootbear be fair - it took him ages to think of that witty comment
What is even remotely "folk" about this?
Folk are performing it.
It’s fusion, artists are allowed to experiment, it’s good
Gets boring after a few plays
Really? Not for me. But Lizzie Jones on the trumpet blows me away. Pure class.
Naw it disnae!!
