The system used to count was invented i.e arabic numerals, roman numerals etc. Next (not necessarily in chronological order, as they may have been other counting systems by ancient civilications) these numbers were used as a language to describe observations and make predictions. Nah Hijab’s first qualification was in philosophy as far as I have researched. What he is talking about is something any undergrad philosopher would know. And most laymen intuitively understand this. Mathematics, language, science etc are just inferences we make *on top of the already existing world.* They are just the “sunglasses,” we view the world from. They are just paradigms and mappings. This is a little bit out of the scope of Mathematics and more in line with the philosophy behind math. Proving that 2+2 is 4 is indeed Mathematics though.

I studied a BSc in Mathematics (specialisation in Computer Science) and we were taught the proof for 2+2=4 using Peano's Axioms for the natural numbers. Many other proofs are also just a Google search away. A better example of Godel's théorème in use is the Cogito, ergo sum. Godel's théorème is for Axiomatic and Intuitive truisms, which are *the basis* of Math and Reason. However, the theorem does not justify the Inductive and Mathematical proofs themselves. Another good example is the assumption that you are a human, and I'm not typing this out to a Robot. After making this inference, NOW we can start using Mathematical reasoning depending on the topic. That would be Godel's théorème at play because I can't Inductively prove that you are real. *But I can (and must) prove 2+2=4 via induction.*

A means the same thing as 2 plus 2. They are the same thing expressed differently. It's well known in math.

If the number 2 was called the number 4, it wouldn't matter as it's still the same value with a different name. Humans didn't create maths. We just discovered it and named it. The name is completely irrelevant in all these scenarios. 2+2 will always be 4 even if we gave 4 a different name.

You can't do *deductive reasoning* (a specific type of logic). *Inductive reasoning* (another specific type of logic) does not necessarily require objective "truth". Syllogisms within deductive reasoning act as a "truth function", but arguments made within deductive reasoning do not act as truth functions. They act as probability calculators. Deductive reasoning says if something is true, false, or if you require more data.... Whereas inductive reasoning calculates a high probability or a lower probability for a thing.

It's a convention that we have chosen to describe maths. 2 means that there are 'two' things like | |. Symbol 4 means that there are 'four' things | | | |. + means addition - add things to each other. Humans could have chosen to use other symbols for numbers, addition etc. Actually they did. Roman numerals ii and iv, binary 10 and 100 and so on and so on. Math and arabic numerals just describe the process. But we could have decided that || . || ~~ ||||

Not really. Discrete math is just formal logic which wasn’t originally a part of math until Aristotle formalized it. So he turned everything into logic which happens to be what discrete maths is based on. 2+2=4 is a tautology but incidentally it is also simply an observation, the greeks counted ‘things’ and made their mathematical relations in accordance with the ideation of those things.

But we see derivatives and geometry and pi all over the place in physics. In fact discrete math is super rare in nature. Most things are continuous in physics, chemistry, and biology.

The system used to count was invented i.e arabic numerals, roman numerals etc. Next (not necessarily in chronological order, as they may have been other counting systems by ancient civilications) these numbers were used as a language to describe observations and make predictions. Nah Hijab’s first qualification was in philosophy as far as I have researched. What he is talking about is something any undergrad philosopher would know. And most laymen intuitively understand this. Mathematics, language, science etc are just inferences we make *on top of the already existing world.* They are just the “sunglasses,” we view the world from. They are just paradigms and mappings. This is a little bit out of the scope of Mathematics and more in line with the philosophy behind math. Proving that 2+2 is 4 is indeed Mathematics though.

@@musashi542 That's not true at all from a Mathematics perspective. I studied a BSc in Mathematics (specialisation in Computer Science) and we were taught the proof for 2+2=4 using Peano's Axioms for the natural numbers. Many other proofs are also just a Google search away.
A better example of Godel's théorème in use is the Cogito, ergo sum. Godel's théorème is for Axiomatic and Intuitive truisms, which are *the basis* of Math and Reason. However, the theorem does not justify the Inductive and Mathematical proofs themselves.
Another good example is the assumption that you are a human, and I'm not typing this out to a Robot. After making this inference, NOW we can start using Mathematical reasoning depending on the topic. That would be Godel's théorème at play because I can't Inductively prove that you are real. *But I can (and must) prove 2+2=4 via induction.*

Saying A -> B => A -> B is just true, always, meaning if you ask anyone who actually deals with logical predicates they would say it's a tautology.
Language is a form of communication. A way to communicate a thought. Mathematics is a language created to convey a part of how our universe functions to people. While the universe will go on with these naturals forces and and phenomena, the language had to be made as a way for us to understand. Someone had to decipher it first.
2+2 is like when you say 2 people added to 2 people which equals something and that something we named it 4, no one decided the outcome of 2+2 humans just decided the name of that something that always was there.
So instead of calling the outcome "something" we refer to it as 4

It's a convention that we have chosen to describe maths. 2 means that there are 'two' things like | |. Symbol 4 means that there are 'four' things | | | |. + means addition - add things to each other. Humans could have chosen to use other symbols for numbers, addition etc. Actually they did. Roman numerals ii and iv, binary 10 and 100 and so on and so on. Math and arabic numerals just describe the process. But we could have decided that || . || ~~ ||||
It’s honestly true you can look at a problem in 2+2= 8 and we can extrapolate that for us to get that same value to equal 8 with two equal numbers equaling 8 would be 4+4=8 but 2+2= 8 we just know how to solve the problem so it makes sense to us. Not really. Discrete math is just formal logic which wasn’t originally a part of math until Aristotle formalized it. So he turned everything into logic which happens to be what discrete maths is based on. 2+2=4 is a tautology but incidentally it is also simply an observation, the greeks counted ‘things’ and made their mathematical relations in accordance with the ideation of those things.

But we see derivatives and geometry and pi all over the place in physics. In fact discrete math is super rare in nature. Most things are continuous in physics, chemistry, and biology.

Even when we use pi or whatever irrational number, we ultimately need to do calculation with discrete numbers it's just the way we are.

It was a good question though. Basics of maths should be explained to kids once they have an ability to understand it. Usually, when we were kids we tend to simply understand that it should be, instead of how and why. This was a smart inquiry, and a far smarter answer.
