  • The second-generation Chevrolet #Camaro was produced by #Chevrolet from 1970 through the 1981 model years. It was introduced in the spring of 1970 Build information for model 123-12487 was released to the assembly plants in February of that same year. It was longer, lower, and wider than the first generation Camaro. A convertible body-type was no longer available. GM engineers have said the second generation is much more of "A Driver's Car" than its predecessor.
Dubbed "Super Hugger",the second-generation Camaro was developed without the rush of the first generation and benefited from a greater budget justified by the success of the first generation.Although it was an all-new car, the basic mechanical layout of the new Camaro was familiar, engineered much like its predecessor with a unibody structure utilizing a front subframe, A-arm and coil spring front suspension, and rear leaf springs.
The chassis and suspension of the second generation were greatly refined in both performance and comfort; base models offered significant advances in sound-proofing, ride isolation, and road-holding. Extensive experience #Chevrolet engineers had gained racing the first-generation led directly to advances in second-generation #Camaro steering, braking, and balance.Although it began its run with a number of high-performance configurations, as the 1970s progressed, the Camaro grew less powerful, succumbing, like many production cars of the era, to the pressures of tightening emissions regulations and a fuel crisis. Major styling changes were made in 1974 and 1978; 1981 was the final model year for the second-generation Camaro. #musclecars

I absolutely loved those wheels on the 80 and 81 Z28. I had a yellow 80 Z28 pictured here, and its wheels matched the striping and was three-tone brown. That hood scoop was great, as it wowed a lot of passengers to see that scoop open up as the car started getting angry. The scoop door was actually a metal of some sort, and it would make something of a metal clang sound when it would open up.

Thanks for sharing this. I bought my wife a 1979 Berlinetta back in 1990. The thing had been parked under a pine tree for about 5 years when I found it, and the guy just wanted it off his property. I gave him $500 and had it towed to my house where I spent the next year getting it running. I didn't spend a whole lot of money (We didn't have money to spend). But I rounded up a good running 305 to replace the worn out original. Cleaned all the pine needles, there must have been a million pine needles in every nook and cranny of the car. Traded the owner of Magnacolor some work on his car in exchange for repainting our Camaro. Then spent months searching wrecking yards for interior parts to replace those that cracked after years of setting in the heat.
When finished, it was a nice little car. I kept it all original except for the rims and tires. I was never able to find the original replacements, so we bought a nice set of Centerline rims. The car certainly wasn't a show car. We didn't have that kind of money. But my wife sure loved HER Camaro. It was hers after all. Our daughter learned to drive in that car too.
Finally in 2002, after owning it for 12 years, we sold it. It was hard to say good bye to the only car I ever put that much work into. My wife insisted we sell it to someone out of town because she couldn't bear to see another person driving HER Camaro. We would have never sold it, but we had grandchildren and needed a bigger car. We will never forget the ol' Berlinetta

The Fox body stang had em covered until 86. Then Ford just amped the 5 liter, and kept out selling Camaro because of price. The Camaro was always a little better car, but a lot more money. And the 5 liter hot rods a lot better than the 305 chevy did. So by the 90s the stang had won the war. Camaro hung on until 02 or so, and a few were bad to the bone. These 78-81 Camaro's have been increasing in value big-time lately. The average selling price on a 78-81 (in good condition) has crept up to around $15-$20K and they'll go nowhere but up as good examples become more and more rare. I'd hold onto it for another few years for a bigger payday if you haven't already sold it.

i always found it interesting how the trans am looked so good but the z28 looked so terrible even though they are basically the same car. its amazing how small details can make such a big difference.
