Nelson X, I agree that Aretha's rendition of Niki Hoeky is one you listen too over and over again. But the lyrics are anything but "nonsensical"! They are a "deep south" dialect that some call geechee and others call patwa. The lyrics to this song are extremely "out there" sexual conveyance! The song speaks of sexual attraction and wild desire and taboos being broken. The line in the song, " You old booga boo you, hey baby! Get hip to the consultation of the (b) oolawee"!! Oh Nelson X! There is nothing nonsensical about this very forward proclamation by the messenger and her sexual desire for her person of interest! Bobbi Gentry who had the hit song "Ode To BillyJoe" has a stunning live performance rendition of Niki Hoeky that shows a physical interpretation of understanding this song!
I got back home from Vietnam in 1970. I guess I was brain dead. Brain to the world. I had heard this tune before I got drafted, and I just thought that it was crazy crazy fantastic.I had ordered-- through the overseas military PX, a stereo with big bass speakers. It was there, waiting for me when I got home. After I got it all assembelled,, the first thing I wanted to hear was this song... Niiki hokey. I don't know why really, but I think I was after something that would bring me back to life.Aretha Franklin had one of those truly powerful and majestic voices ever to have lived. Back then, I had no idea about what the lyrics were, but that driving rhythm section and Aretha's vocals kicked me on the way back to life.
Aretha was the First Lady of music!!! I just wonder if jhud, Celine and the QUEEN!! Was in the same age group and Aretha didn’t smoke. But the funny thing is she did smoke and she smoked at out singing everything The First Lady of QUEENs
I can’t get enough of this song. The vocals, the nonsensical lyrics, the bass, the guitar and the horns all give me life!
